Have you ever listened to the instruments in the background of pop music? Ok what do I hear hmmm let's see... drums and a keyboard!! WHere's the guitars and bass ppl? If a drumset, keyboard and a pretty face is all it takes to become loved and accepted for about 5 years then why doesn't everyone do it! It takes REAL artists, real ppl who WRITE theit own songs to make music!

i have never been so touched by an article in my life. totally speechless........

Gabrielle, can you honestly tell me the average Backstreet Boy fan concentrate more on the music than the magazines and pictures she reads while listening to it as background noise. I don't dictate what they get from the music...I call them as I see them. If there are fans out there that feel that kind of music then good for them. They're one of the few and proud (and uninfected~~AntiMtv.com~~). I knew I shouldn't have made that metaphor, my apoligies...most people arent going to think of it as the same way I do. What I'm trying to say is that manufactured pop music is dangerous to the youths of today. Like it or not, the Britany Spears and Christina Aguileras' are a major part of the reasons teenage girls develop eating disorders. The rap stars who portray themsleves as players and treat women as objects aren't helping younger boys develop much respect towards women. Yes a large part can be put on the absence of decent parenting, but, when the T.V. is going to be a generations mom and dad...then maybe people who are in that influential of a position should take a little more responsibility in the way they present themselves (they sure like it when kids take them too seriously). When I say a person with a knife I'm talking about pop icons and their creators posing a dangerous threat to the audience they target. I'm sure I could have worded that another way...but I didn't and I'm sorry you took that the wrong way. If you think I'm that obsessed with whomever's delivering what message then by all means think that. I know what I meant...and I did not mean that pop culture is life threatening...but is sure as hell not very healthy.

Posted byGabrielle:
the music: who are you to dictate what another person takes into themselves? you shouldnt be measuring your own music against just anything thats out there. measure things on their own individual levels. exploitation of music is a byproduct of a capitalist society, and whether you like it or not, thats how our society is and its not going to change anytime soon. (speaking of exploitation, i can think of many other types that disturb me far more than an artless persons greed and insensitivity.) whatever happened to live and let live (let die?)? theres a fine line between fighting for your own cause and rights, real or imagined, and conveniently overlooking another persons choices because they dont coincide with your own. and as for your metaphor, i think theres more than a fine line between a persons life in danger and the musical futures of a few bubble gum teenagers. if you are so devoted to music that you equate it with an innocent persons life, your devotion passes into harmful obsession and you should have that checked out by a professional. pop culture arose because people chose not to choose. and it is a choice, an inherent right, the right to forfeit your rights.

Vanilla Ice to Eminem? Well, I'm not a fan of rap but I definitely think Eminem is better than Vanilla Ice. And rock will live on... thank goodness for that.

Gabrielle...Those pop fans aren't finding anything in that music that is reaching out to them. They see it marketed in commercials and Mtv. As teenagers, they are automatically going to embrace the things that they are told are cool and whatnot. Our (meaning true music fans) problems lie in the fact that these pop figures and their creators see this and exploit it for all the wrong purposes. They are single handedly defacing everything that we true music fans hold dear. It seems now that instead of music being listened to for the sound, rythm, and feeling like it's supposed to be, all we are seeing is puppets being shoved down the throats of kids who don't know any better. We are not pissed off simply because we think the music sucks. If that was the case you would be right. We are reacting just as a person who is standing by watching somone being robbed at knifepoint. Some of us are going to speak out and react and some of us are just going to not do anything and forget the whole thing ever happened.

Posted byGabrielle:
rock n roll is here to stay. pop, by nature, is transitory. and yet...all who surround themselves with music must have something inside them reaching out to that particular form of art. whether singers or players or entertainers or mixers, they may not be creators, but they are bringing sound and rhythm into this world. whether you like to admit it or not, it is music. jazz was called a passing phase and an aberration, and has become the greatest american form of music and gave birth to almost all modern music. i boycott pop music as much as anyone else here, but theres a certain communion within the music world. if you see that, if you bring music into your soul, no matter how pure it is to you, what good does it do to believe that entertainers are cheapening your life? as long as you remain true, nothing and nobody can take that away from you. and the least you can give anyone is respect for putting it out there and allowing music to live on in their watered-down way. the music of a culture becomes what that culture makes it, you cant blame the musicians. its a rare musicican who actually changes something in the world, and then that one needs to find an entire wave to make it lasting. im not condoning pop by any means, and conflict does breed change and invention, but no ones going to change anything by yelling about how youre right and theyre wrong. it comes down to mutual understanding and respect. simply understanding that what music they give is as much as they are able to give, and respect for that amount, no matter how small or great.

Korn is not rap-metal.

Posted byMike:
I think that the comparisons are really well thought out, but there is just one difference. Just as the Hair Bands were dying out in the early 1990s, what music do you predict will "die" out soon? Rap Metal (Limp Biskit, Korn, etc.)

Posted byMasterOfPuppetz:
hey lindsay! pop is not a new genre! are you nuts! pop has been around just as long as rock, its just that nobody remembers most of the pop groups of the old days because they "went out of style", rock bands tend not to "go out of style", because they actually have loyal fans and not trendy a$$holes.

You people that sit and defend your eminem probably prayed to nkotb in 90. they are great to you then as he is now but you will forget them. you cant tell now but you will. the point is that you cant tell greatness untill it has stood the test of time. All this fad music is redicules. i like to refer to eminem as the rapping backstreet boy. he plays to the teenage boys that buy his crap TO SELL RECORDS. And you buy them because he is in. if you truly like what he does. i mean love it, think you will be singing the real slim shady in your olden days your crazy. Teenager rule the music world now and thats kind of sad. Im only a teen myself but im a lot more resoponsible with my money. i buy true rock. the doors, nirvana, the ramones, etc. Rock is a feeling. and it will never die because great things never do. sadly we will have to keep it alive by clutching the past because i dont think we can count much on th furture.

I think this is all very amusing. I'm going to keep my musical opinions to myself because I just *know* that some of you are going to want to reply but I tell you now it would be wasted. I don't plan on coming back here just to see what other people have to say about me and my opinion. So there's that. What I really think is funny is the amount of animosity people put here. And the profanity. Oh, the profanity. For the record, I don't wholly and heartily agree with antiGUY, but he (?) makes some good points. Thanks for the entertainment, guys.

DEAR GOD!!! I can't believe I just said talent and Limp Bizkit in the same sentence!!! excuse me while I go wash my mouth out with soap.

Posted bythe max:
Breath easy SubXavier it's not a Who cover (thank god) it's just a poor excuse for song. Limp totally blew it with this last album. Deep down all their so called fans know it too. They may have broke some sales records or what not but that's only cause they're still relatively the flavor of the month to some retards. Unless they take their time on this next one, and maybe put a little talent behind it, their next album will be a total flop after this shyt.

Posted bySubXavier:
Limp Bizkit did "My Generation?" Oh god, please don't tell me that's a Who cover... Did they actually have the audacity to put a Who song on their album?

Posted byLindsay:
I don't think that pop groups are trying to kill pop, I think pop music is just a new genre of music that is here to stay, just like good ol'rock and roll.

Posted bythe max:
"Shady" your ignorance betrays your juvenille mind...I'm 20 and if that's an Old fart to you...then you have alot of growing up to do son. 10 years from now you will be too embarrased to tell anyone you listened to Limp Bizkit or Eminem...I gaurantee it. The only "music geek" (as you so immaturely put it) here, is you. For all you people who want to know what the definiton of a poser is...check out Shady's ridiculous post. Now, "Shady" turn your Red Yankees' bseball cap backwards over your bleach blonde hair, pull your pants up and walk your pathetic wigger a$$ back home to your mommy. Have her bake you some cookies too. After your done there you can go up to your room put on your headphones and listen to Fred Durst say fukk 46 times in a 3 minute song. Get a fukking clue you stupid little shyt.

Posted byPancake:
You people have very narrow definitions of genre if you can't tell that most rock music is pop and vice versa. Rock and roll is actually a subgenre of pop, which is far more encompassing to include any variety of music that's widely popular. The Beatles and Rolling Stones were rock bands and they were pop bands. Limp Bizkit and Korn are rock bands and are pop bands. Rock will only die if no one performs it any longer, which does not seem to be the case now 50 years after its introduction any more than dixieland jazz is dead, for there are still bands playing that form of music and people enjoying it. Pop existed before rock and will exist after rock, because there will always be some form of music that appeals to any given generation. Musicians will play what people want to hear because they generally want to make a living playing music, if they can.

Posted byShady:
Pft..what a bunch of music geeks. Why does everyone hate Limp Bizkit? And Eminem? If y'all think Eminem and Limp Bizkit will go away you're very mistaken. It's thought that rock WILL die and the only band that's original to emerge is Limp Bizkit. And Eminem is the most popular rapper EVER. His name's a household name. He will never be forgotten like Tupac never will be ( RIP brother) or BIGGIE SMALLS ( RIP) I wish all of you little losers would listen to a whole Limp Bizkit album. Limp has altered their music from rock to rock-rap to a very original sound, and if you've heard the whole Chocolate Starfish album, you'd agree. Rollin' is a good song. My Generation's good also, but their album has far better sounds. Metallica's on its last legs, and Papa Roach all that poo is gonna fade away. You old f@rts are just sad the old days are not back. RATM was same-old same-old rock with a political twist to it. I do agree though that rock will die, and the semi-rock bands who are in it will have to alter their music to adhere to it. And no, rap is not dead. Rap will be here for a long time, it will eventually die though. My prediction is that everything will change in the next ten years, while this huge teenie bop boyband cr@p will subside. I say everyone just listen to whatever they want and forget what everyone thinks.

Pop charts don't mean a thing! A band is not ranked by the amount of awards it gets, but the significance of the music. For example: Rage Against the Machine came back this year with a flash and played the democratic national convention, now that's significance! Limp Bizkit and Korn will most likely fade to black, and the pop groups will go away, letting a new age of musicial understanding into the upcoming decade.

Posted bykyle:
okay... one thing, the real good rock stuff, never was HUGE. it was popular to a point, but for most bands, look in underground websites, gauntlet.com, antimtv.com for good new metal, not limp bizkit, ugh. its like saying oh poison was hard rock. bull$hit. pop exists all the time because there are 11 year olds. but rock exists because there are 13-xx year olds. theres a different between pop and rock/pop. creed = hardER rock pop. britney spears = pop (there goes her implants :o) ). 11 year olds never liked ozzy. they liked $hit. these bands have sugary love songs to please the little kids, who cares, THE ONLY WAY ROCK WILL DIE IS IF WE LET IT DIE.

Posted byOzzy:
Me thinks Scott missed the point entirely.

Posted byScott:
Great, more metal enthusiasts comparing Ozzie to Beethoven. Look, pop has existed for the greater part of this century, pretty much immediately after the record was invented. When swing was big, hipsters called it pop and snapped their fingers to jazz. When rock blossomed, Hendrix fans denounced the Turtles as teenage prattle (which they were in my opinion). If I listened to the radio in the 60's, I'd hear a lot of pop rubbish too. The same thing is happening now. There IS good music being produced now, but the style everyone on this board likes (hard rock/arena rock) isn't being produced like it used to. Why? Because the youth underground (which created Stones, Nirvana, The Clash, etc) has moved to hiphop and techno. Neither Fatboy Slim nor Puff Daddy count as "underground" youth music, you can lump them into the Turtles of Electronica and Hiphop. If anyone on this board would bother to look beyond the top 40s of these genres, they might be pleasantly surprised. Because the current train of thought on this board is: "There isn't much hard rock being produced anymore. And everything I hear on the radio doesn't sound much like hard rock. Ergot, real music is dead." Ridiculous.

Posted bysTuPiDieTTe:
True, rock stays around quite a long time, but these pop groups (ie NSync, B.Spears) don't look like they'll be goin away any time soon.. If only MTV would play some music other than TRL and people weren't so passive...

Pop's dead in my eyes. There's no substance in it to continue on as long as rock has. Guess we'll all see in about 20 or 30 years though. BTW, Limp Bizkit is considered a rap/pop band by most rock fans and by 100% of metal fans. Those statistics seem about right =)

A Perspective Of Today's Music Scene By: John Avino It seems that no longer is music a form of art. It’s more like a form of entertainment. All new acts including and not limited to: Backstreet Boys, ‘Nsync, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and 98degrees all have taken over the music scene with their so-called good looks and minimal talent. Girls (mostly teens) have become infatuated with the image of “the boyband” and obsessed with looking like Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. The record companies have had so much money pouring in from these performers (I refuse to call them artists), that they have been shunning hard working musicians who actually write their own songs and play instruments. Music is supposed to be a form of art. Not a form of entertainment. Music is meant to be created by an artist as a form of expression. Most of the current crop of BSB and Britney copies don’t write their own songs, nor do they play any instruments. But still, they take the spotlight. Not the songwriters. Not the bands. All the people seem to care about are the performers. And the song writers who write the songs are only writing for money. There isn’t any expression in these tailor-made for radio songs. They’re just being paid to write a hit. Frankly, it doesn’t even matter if the song makes sense. It just has to have a catchy hook. There’s no originality. I’m just hoping for a revolution, where REAL music by REAL artists regains control of the music scene. My definition of real music is: A powerful expression of creativity and emotion. Musicians are artists who have a rare gift of insight and can translate their visions into sound. The musician is part and parcel of the music which he or she writes, records, and performs. The message contained in the music can be political or spiritual, personal or universal. Most importantly, it is the musician’s own. Music has the power to affect mood. It can be positive and uplifting, or it can be melancholy and depressing. It can invoke memories or create new ones. Real music is created by the musician, not by a paid writer or by a technician in a studio. It is written by the artist. It is performed by the artist or band. The musicians not only sing their songs, but play their own instruments as well. The instruments are part of the total package of the music. In fact, up until the most recent century, music did not have vocals at all. Think Bach, Beethoven, Motzart. Whether it is in the mastery of a guitar solo or in the beauty of a piano chord, the music is created by the instruments. Not to imply that all music must have instruments. Even acapella uses the voice as an instrument of expression. What music must have is talent, originality, and emotion. Real Music is Not: A group of people chosen for their looks, being handed a pre-written song and pre-recorded backup music, doing their best to sing and dance onstage. At best, that’s entertainment. At worst, it’s a mockery of everything that real music is. So if you’re wondering what my beef is with “packaged” music, there you have it. When the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync and Britney Spears and all their clones start expressing themselves and displaying some talent instead of bare chests or cleavage, then they can start using the term “music”. Real Music is also not someone stealing segments and clips of someone else’s music and “mixing” it together. Sorry Fatboy Slim, but that just won’t cut it. I have nothing against any general form of music, as long as it’s pure. But to the Puff Daddies and the Jay-Zs of the world, originality is not a dirty word. I have nothing against smart marketing, and I will agree that these so-called bands have that going for them. ....... But please, don’t call it music.

Rock 'n Roll Never Forgets

Mr Flibble
I agree but you know there will always be pop and there will always be rock. For every mainstream rock/rap/metal/whatever band there will always be ten better ones all waiting for a record deal or a bit of airplay. Limp Bizkit and Creed might not make the most amazingly innovative music but would you honestly rather listen to Nsync?

WISCOBOY
AntiGuy, I basically agree with your point of view, but with some reservations. I believe that true rock bands have been able to remain intact because of their art, while today you see the evidence that the only reason to be in music is the money, which in the end can not sustain a band through naturally occurring conflicts which arise within them. I also believe that since the early 90's, the overexposure of bands pushed on us listeners by the corporate commercialism causes a "boredom to numbness" towards performers(notice I didn't say artists, since most of what is seen and heard today is nothing more than product, i.e. Leanne Rhymes, all the boy bands, most of the young blondes, etc.). Being a product of the 70's, listening and appreciating ARTISTS such as RUSH, Jethro Tull, Robin Trower, and the like, it's sad to see the road the music genre has travelled since. The real threat to originality are the record executives who only play by the bottom line, unwilling to take chances with new music ideas.

T bone
AntiGuy that was powerful brother! I think you said it all, how can I expand on that? Hats off to you on a job well done!

lol
You made some good points, I applaude you but there are too many nontalented bands out called rock that are crapity crap crap crap. 3 doors down? Who will care about them in 10 years? I could be wrong TSOL still has some mindless followers but they have always sucked.

kwisto
Everything in this is true, but everybody seems to forget a band that really $ucks: Creed. That's what I call posers. Also the whole rap-metal wave is only bull$hit, I hate Limp Bizkit. We need somebody to change things... Kurt come back!

What! Nirvana won't be remembered in 10 years? A trendy operation? Give me a break comrade, that kind of junk you said is pure garbage and the stuff "metal" bigots have been spouting since Nirvana's surprising arrival . Let it Freaking go. Sorry pal, but when I think of "Mainstream" metal I think of Skid Row which equals Limp Bizkit and Def Leppard which equals Korn. Yeah so the newer Rapcore stuff uses a more distorted guitars, Korn's generation wanted to be different from the "cough" Alternative and have, with the leftover's of the "Grunge" revolution. What comes next as the "next big thing" is unknowable, but for sure Nirvana will be part of its ancestry like part of ACDC's became part of the Grunge Revolution. Might want to try to become a little more open. Thrash metal is my favorite kind of metal, was it just a trend?
