preach on brother ridah, its exaclty as you say,a way to get more votes,

The problems that me and my friends have are more to do with being broke and trying to get some money together for food as opposed to worrying about our little cousins, nephews and nieces being subjected to such "adult material" and mind corrupting fodder that the entertainment industry allows. My cousins, nephews and nieces all have good parents that restrict what their children watch on television and have access to so why do we need politicians sticking their noses into something that is not their business? They want to pass all of these laws and make all of these rules, then go and enact a law that will enable me to have more money and the ability to afford food a little easier. So sick of politicians making our own personal business apart of their cause and a way to gain more votes.

The days of sheltering your children from the evils of the world are all but over. There's just too much information out there coming from all directions 24 hours a day. You can't stop it. Parents can't. Your local congressman can't. Even fat-headed television hosts can't.

Hehe... then what would you prefer, Loserman? A totalitarian dictatorship? Communism? Maybe a tribal system where one individual or group is sacrificed to the volcano god every week or so after a "mission." I know.. the winner could get to be the leader of the tribe... which, by that time, would be down to just him. Ah, well... the joys of politics.

We have to do this it is just one more step in destroying that great opressor of the people, the Constitution. Once we have the music then we can go after the guns. Our agents already control the media and Hollywood but the People's revolution can not go on if people are allowed to think for themselves. Listen to Rosie, Listen to Babs, Listen to Rob Riener these rich out of touch hollywood types know the truth - Democracy sucks! Viva La Revolutions

First of all, I don't see anything pertaining to violent music and or video games being marketted towards children. Than again I don't think that telling artists to "clean" up their music for children isn't fair for the artist. It is soley the parents responsibilty to monitor and speak what is right for the minor, depending on the age range. It shouldn't be the responsibility of the government. Nor should the government repremand the artists for acts of a few obviously misguided persons. It is time for certain persons to quit their crying and complaining and to do something so that they do not raise future "killers".

For a straight forward gal with a big mouth, I sure do get nervous after I push "add my comments." I can see all sides of this, so please don't think I am being closed minded. I guess I just feel that as an adult it does not affect me. It does affect the wanna-be-bad-ass kids though and thats fine with me. As far as the 'voluntary system that does give parents that take time to monitor', it would also not affect them if you think about it. They are already there to approve or disapprove, correct? I would assume that type of parent, like myself, would hold respect towards those trying to protect their children. But anyway, I went on too long earlier and don't want to do that now. I just feel that if your doing your parental job or your an adult it should not offend you.
Posted by aG:

Lucy the problem is if the Senate passes this stupid "act" guess what, the entertainment industry will decide to opt-out of all rating systems because it opens them up to fines and regulation. So the voluntary system that does give parents that take the time to monitor what their kids do won't be there any longer. Yes it is a problem but it is not something the government should put their noses in to. As to type of mother you mentioned, she has a lot deeper problems as a mother than he children listening to Eminem, she's living the bad influence so they could listen to Donnie and Marie and still turn out messed up. Right now there is a system in place called warning stickers, most stores are not supposed to sell these items to minors although they do and they will under a rating system. Also most "offensive" CD releases are now accompanied by a clean version with out the objectional material. So I do not see how the government sticking their nose in here can help, it can only back fire and when that does the only option these Senators will see is a mandatory rating system and I'm sorry I just don't believe that it is the governments job. They can do a lot of damage when doing things in the name of the children.

You raise a good point by saying the government should help out those kids that are without caring parents...but, do you realy want politians and brainless morons deciding what is good and bad for those children. These people make a living lying and back stabbing. They know only what their "advisors" and yes-men tell them (ex. advisor:"Mr. Senetor, this music thing is getting to be quite the controversy." Senetor:"Will this controversy put me in big spotlight with my own press conference?" Yes Man:"YES SIR"). These people don't give a shyt about the youth of this country. The only reason they get into these little hissy fits is because, like was stated before, to make a name for themselves by jumping on a broken down band wagon. A rating system for music is just plain redundant. Think about it. I garauntee if something like this goes into affect all it will be is 5 elderly people sitting in a room listening for naughty words. Going on swearing alone is no way to rate music. I also bet you that anything with a hint of a power chord will automatically get an "adult" rating...even if the singer is preaching his love of flowers and open meadows (what the hell am I saying?!). I'm just gonna finish by saying that this crap will do nothing. Nothing at all, if that same parent buys his minor ciggaretes...then I'm guessing he's not going to give 2 shyts about buying them an R-rated CD. This whole thing is as useless as it is unconstitutional.

aG, first off, I totally see your point in saying that censorship is an abhoration of OUR rights as an adult to guide and raise our children. Lets get personal here though. I have a 37 year old sister who is totally self absorbed in herself and whatever drug or alcohol is available and could care less what her children listen too. I would assume that Igmo and Spermie could listen to Eminem all day and she could care less. Therefore, Igmo thinks it's okay to be degraded by a man and Spermie thinks its normal because Hey, it's in mainstreem music. Mom doesn't give a crap what I listen to and someone has to enlighten me on how the world works. If 'so and so' (insert any rap star) says 'the Ho's got to give it up to get respect from me' and she's out there saying "I'm okay, your okay...do what feels right,' who's raising that child? It's kinda like cigarettes, be 16, 18 and buy it on your own. Until then...Momma's got to buy it and then its her fault. I really don't know yet. My kids are 10 and 8. They listen to what I listen too and buy Barbies and plastic soldiers with their allowance right now. I guess I will always be the parent who is there to 'censor' it first...not the government. (Gee, by now you guys know me I would think.) But what if I'm not? You know, realistically, it does not effect us as adults. We buy whatever we want because we can. We can and we do. Why would it ever piss someone off, who is our age, that censorship has kept crap out of our childrens hands, heads, eyes, ears? Fighting that is just saying that we want to fight the system for 'whatever' reason because it exist. Just to argue and fight about something. Not all parents are there for their kids. DAMN, IT DOES NOT EFFECT OUR RIGHTS AS ADULTS! It effects children, the people that it should. We hate the government so much for caring about our kids now? How does this hurt you? WE are the first and last amendement to our children until they are old enough to vote and/or work. It's just another way to say get involved in your kids lives or let someone else do it for you. You can still buy those CD's, videos or tapes if you really feel they are age specific for your kids. If you think your child is mature enough to listen to it...buy the damn thing. But if you don't give a crap about your kids and think its not your responsiblility to raise them...by God...just like wellfare, let the government do it. They are used to raising children aren't they? I'm against censorship to a degree. But until parents get involved with their children and CARE and LISTEN to the crap that is being put out...YES put a rating on buying it. Does an eight year old really need access to Puffy Combs or whatever because he has one song that says: "He's my best friend" when the rest of the album says f'n this and f'n that? NO! Sorry aG, we usually agree. I tend to go much deeper as a parent.

Hey lets look at tjis way, they woulkd have to fine every company in the world, they all focus on the youth, and the big R is just a thing that makes kids feel tough. They go see a R rated movie and they think they are the living end, they buy the game with the M rating because it is suppost to be the coolest;normally is. Kids can tell the diffrence between the guys they see shot in the movie or game, and real life. this is also another stab at censorship. So let the freedom of speech
Posted by Obelix:

I agree with asterix. It's all to do with money and sh*t. Censorship doesn't bother me cuz I record my own music in which I can swear and cuss my motherf*ckin' a$$ off and no-one can do anything about it.
Posted by àsterix:

WHAT A GIMP! Your government knows that you cant prove direct marketing to children. Cigarette companies have been doing it for years and governments haven't been able to do anything. A document leaking "Rothmans" (cigarette giant) intention to focus marketing strategies almost entirely on young people to ensure its survival still bought about no civil or government action (apart from a concerned report on 60 minutes)! Its a vote winner that does nothing (a constitutional placebo). Governments love all the ca$h generated from music (of whomb young people are the top consumers). I dont think censorship will come into it until the government makes some monumental stands against one or two bands and conveniently turn a blind eye.

ya know, I suppose that lil ol thing called the Bill Of Rights (specificaly the First Amendment) doesn't apply when Senators and uptight mothers are pissed.
Posted by Lunargoose:

More proof that there really was no difference between the Bush and Gore tickets last election... I still remember back in 99 or 98, when this joker, with the help of C. Delores Tucker and some other like-minded senators, put out this blackball list of dangerous and degrading music artists that they wanted banned, and the list included the usual Wu Tang, Geto Boys and Cannibal Corpse, to be sure, but also the Black Crowes and Blues Traveler. I wish I was making this up, but for some reason Lieberman considers John Popper and company to be "adult-rated" material. Keep this in mind.
Posted by SubXavier:

I see what you mean. At first, I thought, "Oh, ok, it'l be like G, PG, Pg-13 and R... that doesn't sound too horrible..." but then I remembered that movie studios often omit scenes to stay within rating guidelines. The same thing would happen to musicians if labels were put on albums.. record companies would force them to cut part of their music for an untold audience. Or, on the other side of the coin, maybe be forced to -insert- some expletives for a higher rating and more controversy. That is censorship... and all for a few votes.

I'm so sick of this kind of bullshyt. Politians trying to improve their careers behind a mask of morality. It amazes me...these are the very last people on earth that I would expect to fight against the corruption of anything.
