Chris Slade Looks Back On Leaving AC/DC
(TeamRock Radio) Drummer Chris Slade has revealed he quit AC/DC in 1994 as a result of "stupid pride" - and he'd react differently if the situation rose again. The Welshman was with the Aussie giants for five years, appearing on 1990 album The Razor's Edge and playing their headline set at Monsters Of Rock the following year.

But he resigned just as the band were gearing up to record Ballbreaker in 1995 after an argument with mainman Malcolm Young, which led to Phil Rudd's second stint behind the kit.

Slade tells Music Radar: "I'd been doing demos with the guys in London for two months, when Malcolm called and said they wanted to give Phil a try. I said, 'That's me out then - I'm gone.' Mal said, 'No, we want to keep you on. We don't even know if Phil can play.' I told him that was his problem now."

He recalls his attitude at the time was "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and adds: "They wanted to keep me on for months and months, and that didn't feel right. I resigned the next day." more.

Gene Simmons Discovered Cinderella Not Jon Bon Jovi
(Classic Rock) Cinderella frontman Tom Keifer says it was Gene Simmons, not Jon Bon Jovi, who first took an interest in the band. For years, Bon Jovi was credited with discovering the Philadelphia group.

In a recent interview with BigMusicGeek, the singer set the record straight. Keifer says: "Jon is credited with discovering the band - or his interest actually led to a record deal.

"But if you went back a couple of years, Gene Simmons was actually the guy who took an interest in the band, although it didn't lead to a deal for one reason or another.

"I guess in terms of discovery, you really could credit Gene, even though both Gene and Jon showed an interest." more.

Fans Change Mind About Blaze Era Iron Maiden?
(Classic Rock) Blaze Bayley believes Iron Maiden fans have come round to thinking well of his 1990s stint as the band's singer. The Wolfsbane frontman joined in 1994 and appeared on two albums, 1995's The X Factor and 1998's Virtual XI - before being ousted when classic era vocalist Bruce Dickinson returned to the fold in 1999.

Bayley's tenure with the band saw many fans turning away, especially in the UK. But two decades on, he believes they think better of his time with the NWOBHM giants.

He tells Get Your Rock Out: "People seem a lot more interested and view my period with Iron Maiden in a much different way. I think people take a fresh look at it now and go, 'Well, the albums were the start of a different era of Iron Maiden. And outside the UK people are a lot more fond of those albums."

He reflects: "It's 20 years ago that I joined Maiden and it's 30 years since I started singing - all those kind of anniversary dates have come together." More including a stream of the interview here.

Yes Plot New Chapter With Heaven and Earth
(Prog) Yes veteran Chris Squire has described 20th studio album Heaven & Earth as a "new chapter" in the band's history. Speaking in a promotional video, where each member has their say, the bassist points to the addition of frontman Jon Davison as a key element in their continuing creative development.

Squire says: "Working with Jon for the first time as a writer makes it another chapter in Yes' history of various people being in the band, leaving and new ones coming in. It makes it exciting."

Guitarist Steve Howe adds: "Every album's different - different time, different sensibility, and maybe a different mood too, which comes through in the music. Jon's a very fine musician."

Davison comments: "Ever since I joined the band I've been preparing for this album. It's so neat to hear the band take on what I've offered, interpret it differently and add their own flavours."

Jonathan Jackson from TV's Nashville Performs At NAMM
(Gibson) Gear is the star attraction of the annual Summer NAMM show, but on the event's final day, this past Saturday, one of the biggest crowds gathered to hear the debut NAMM show performance of Jonathan Jackson.

Jackson plays struggling musician Avery Barkley on ABC TV's Nashville, and Avery's rise, fall and return from the ashes is one of the series' most compelling storylines. Jackson is a five-time Emmy Award winning actor who won those statues and heaps of accolades for his role as Lucky Spencer on the long running daytime soap opera General Hospital. He's also made People's list of the "50 Most Beautiful People." But what he proved at the NAMM show were his abilities as an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist.

On Nashville - where Gibson guitars play plenty of cameo roles - Avery often appears onscreen with a variety of Gibsons, including Les Pauls, ES-335s and a Jeff Tweedy SG. At the NAMM acoustic stage, the spotlight was squarely on Jonathan's angelic tenor voice and his Gibson L-00 guitar, accompanied by his brother Richard Lee Jackson's cajn percussion.

Although both are professional actors with numerous TV and film credits, they also share a serious rock band, Jonathan Jackson and Enation, which includes bassist Daniel Sweatt and will release a fourth full-length album, the sonically sweeping Radio Cinematic, on October 14.

A sneak preview of the album is available on Jackson's web site via "Everything Is Possible," a new single that features stacked crescendos of Jackson's vocals and his chiming guitar chords and riffs, and benefits from the hit-making co-production of Greg Archilla (Matchbox 20, Collective Soul) and Patrick Dillett (David Byrne, the National). The album was recorded in Enation's current hometown, at Nashville's the Tracking Room and Blue Grotto Sound studios.

After the Jacksons' NAMM performance, we met in the Gibson tour bus, which was parked behind Nashville's Music City Center convention hall, for a conversation. Read the full interview here.

Charli XCX Discusses Her Style
(Radio.com) Charli XCX is the woman singing the chorus on Iggy Azalea's "Fancy," this year's song of the summer. She's the woman who wrote last year's song of the summer, Icona Pop's "I Love It." And she's absolutely obsessed with slip dresses, but not because of some '90s retro fashion inspiration.

"This is kind of just a comfort thing," she says, laughing. "And a new found love for my breasts. I really want to embrace my breasts. I think every woman should because boobs are awesome."

That sort of frank thinking and talk encapsulates Charli's approach to fashion (and perhaps interviews). She says that although she is aware she's wearing a sheer Dolce & Gabbana slip dress, the point of it is not to tease or attract the male gaze. Her selection is entirely of her own design.

Quoting the opening of a Bikini Kill song, she tells us that she finds the idea of dressing for oneself to be cool and punk. "Men are only 50% of the population. Women can do what the f- they want," Charli says, flipping the bird.

SNL's Jay Pharoah Parodies Usher's 'Good Kisser'
(Radio.com) There's usually a lot of flossing in big budget music videos - fancy cars, custom bling, luxe sets - but Saturday Night Live cast member Jay Pharoah takes the concept of flossing to a whole new level in his parody video of Usher's "Good Kisser."

Re-titled "Bad Kisser," you can guess how the flossing comes into play. In the video, Pharoah deals with a woman who needs a little help in the dental hygiene department.

It starts out real enough - waking up next to a girl and dealing with morning after-breath - and then gets progressively more absurd to the point where Pharoah uses floss in a dark way.

Riffing off Usher's lyrics, he sings: "At 5 in the morning she ain't brush so her breath it smell like s-t / She looked into my eye / I think she wanna take me for a ride / She opened up, it smelled like something died / It made me wanna commit suicide."

Watch it here.

Knifeworld Streaming New Song 'Send Him Seaworthy'
(Prog) Knifeworld have released a stream of their track Send Him Seaworthy, which comes from their second album The Unravelling, launched this week via InsideOut.

Described by Prog as "the perfect 'pop' record," mainman Kavus Torabi recently labelled it the most difficult recording project he's ever been involved with.

Marking the release, Knifeworld say: "The wrong planets aligned, eight collective chakras began spinning in reverse and He Who Walks Backwards stumbled forward again. Our second album, The Unravelling, has birthed itself and that which was left has become right. Too right.

"We will be performing selections from both this album and older troubles in the UK this September. We hope you might join us. Somehow." Stream the song here.
