B Sides for 07/29/2014
"This record brought me back to a place of what I love so much about music, back to the feelings I had when I was in high school," explains Lenny. "It's a real rock & roll record - it's raw, it's got soul and it came together really quickly." Kravitz is scheduled to launch a world tour in support of "Strut" on October 22 in Moscow. "Sex" follows the release of project's lead single, "The Chamber". Watch the new video here.
"Watch people play records? That's stupid. You couldn't pay me to go. I'm not oversimplifying it," he seethed. "That's what's going on. I don't think it would be any fun without the drugs. It's a drug party." The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee went on to single out Las Vegas' annual Electric Daisy Carnival, which this year saw two attendees lose their lives from drug-related causes. "You take that many kids to Vegas in the summer, what could go wrong?" Petty quipped. "I knew it as soon as I saw the ad. I went, 'Ooh, dead people.' Do you need the money so bad that you'll put some kid's life at risk?"

But he didn't just wait side stage to watch Beck's show. White took the stage with Beck to perform "Loser," "Where It's At" and "Pay No Mind" for the encore. And the former White Stripe wasn't the only one who joined in on the fun. Sean Lennon was there, too, contributing tambourine. Dexter Holland and co helped promote the tour by recording versions of Bad Religion's No Control from the 1989 album of the same name and Do What You Want from the 1988 album Suffer. They have also recorded a version of No Reason Why, from Pennywise' self-titled 1991 debut album. It hints at a potential live collaboration by the three bands on the upcoming tour. Videos for each of the tracks feature concert photos of The Offspring in action. Watch them here.
Nugent joined host Bob Coburn on July 17 to discuss the project and to take calls from fans across the continent. Check out the Rockline Replay with Ted Nugent here. The show featuring the Nugent interview will be streamed for free on the Rockline website beginning the evening after the day of broadcast and available for a 2-week period.
"Rapt" comes from Karen O's forthcoming album, 'Crush Songs,' which is scheduled to be released in North America on September 9th by Cult Records. The new music video was directed by Karen's husband, director Barney Clay (TV On the Radio, Gnarls Barkley, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and features production design from K.K. Barrett, who worked with Karen on 'Stop the Virgens'. Check out the video here.
The three acts released a companion CD of the same name to support the run; the package includes a newly-recorded version of The Eagles' "Hotel California" (which Felder co-wrote) featuring all three artists. Foreigner will continue playing shows this summer as the current schedule is a mix of casinos and county fairs; the band's next live date is this Friday in Redmond, Washington. Watch the video here.
Crafted by Brooklyn artist Danielle Mastrion, the mural is on the site of the former Lee's Sportswear, the storefront that made the album art for the group's landmark work, Paul's Boutique. The unveiling on Sunday coincided with the anniversary of the album turning 25 on July 25, 1989. See the mural on Bowery Boogie or view it in person at 99 Rivington Street on the side of Wolfnights, a local sandwich shop. Mastrion previously painted a Beasties' mural at Centre-Fuge, a public arts project.
But the fate of the studio and the building does not stop with this sale. Tim Reynolds, who is the owner of Bravo Development, told the Tennessean he is already in negotiations with interested out-of-state developers. On the surface a nondescript office structure located along Nashville's Music Row, the building gained national attention after musician and producer Ben Folds posted an open letter about the impending sale and making a case to preserve the studio, which among the tenants housed inside. RCA Studio A was founded in 1964 by Chet Atkins, an early architect of the Nashville Sound, and onetime Nashville A-team guitarist Harold Bradley. "I've recorded all over the world and I can say emphatically that there's no recording space like it anywhere on the planet," wrote Folds. He rents the studio and has produced numerous acts in the space, which is large enough to contain a full orchestra. The long list of artists who have recorded in the space over the past half-century includes Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Monkees, Waylon Jennings and Tony Bennett. Bradley, in a subsequent statement of his own, discounted the historic value of the building and the studio. "What makes a place historic?" he wrote. "The architecture of the Nashville sound was never brick and mortar. Certainly, there are old studio spaces that, in our imaginations, ring with sonic magic; but in truth, it's not the room; it's the music."
Written by original guitarist Ace Frehley, the song appeared on the band's 1974 self-titled debut album. According to legend, Frehley lacked confidence in his singing ability at the time, so bassist Gene Simmons handled lead vocals, despite his dislike of alcohol. "Cold Gin" is featured as one of 9 tunes from the band's classic 1970s era in their standard 15-song set as part of their summer tour with Def Leppard. The KISS/Def Leppard run wraps up August 31 in Houston, Texas. Watch the video here.
The Los Angeles Times reports the rocker and new wife, model Courtney Bingham, have put the property on the market after buying an expansive mansion in Westlake Village for $4.125 million. Set on a third-acre corner lot and designed for entertaining, the stone-clad Calabasas house features wood floors, an office with built-ins, a loft, a music room/home theater, four bedrooms and five bathrooms. A waterfall sits in the garden courtyard.
