Crimes Against Music: Closed Doors
01/13/06
.
(Day in Rock) We received a lot of emails in response to the kick off of this series last week. Some people asked "who cares," others readily agreed that this is a crime against music. Now to answer the "who cares" crowd we could have a long lament on how this is just one more nail in the coffin of rock and roll and how if this doesn't bother you may be part of the larger problem with rock today. E.g. the target audience that doesn't really believe in musical integrity, you buy up what's hot today and discard it for what's hot tomorrow. But at the end of the day it is supposed to be art, sure mostly silly and insipid art, but art nonetheless and as bands have proven in the past you can make credible music and make lots of money. But the focus should be on the music, not making the cash as becomes more and more of the case each year. That's the 2 cents on that but to get the core of the problem with the practice of using classic songs in music; John Densmore of The Doors summed it up perfectly. Below is an excerpt of an article from Adtunes.

There's a reason you never hear music by the group The Doors used in TV ads. Much to the dismay of his former band mates, Doors drummer John Densmore hasn't allowed any of the band's music to be used in television commercials. Whether it's $15 million offered by Cadillac to use the song "Break On Through (to the Other Side)" in an SUV ad or the $4 million offer from Apple Computer, Densmore hasn't given in. The reason, in his own words:

"People lost their virginity to this music, got high for the first time to this music," Densmore said. "I've had people say kids died in Vietnam listening to this music, other people say they know someone who didn't commit suicide because of this music…. On stage, when we played these songs, they felt mysterious and magic. That's not for rent."

And now that I have actually read all the way down before I ranted (you all know I rant much on here), Densmore is a damn hero. Dude is comfortable enough with his own life to turn down possible freakin million$. OK, he ain't poor, I'd be like "where do I line the millions up?", but come on, if you can't respect this guy, you are a tard. Meanwhile, our goverment is getting paid billions every week while people are still homeless from the hurricanes. Densmore is one cool dude.

One gripe I have is that the author of this series didn't use his name anywhere. How do I know who to give the props to?
It's up to the musicians obviously. Let's face it, no one makes music to remain obscure. We all want our music heard, whether it's just liitle old me hoping 50 people will buy a CD online, or people like Cobain and Vedder who talked the talk, but went to bed with every media outlet to further their careers. The deciding line is how do you want the music used. If you care about your music, if it comes from your heart - you don't want it on TV shilling for products. If you just wrote the song for money and fame, then hell, why not get more cash by selling it. It depends on how you feel about msic. The companies look at it as a way to make profit. some bands look at it as a way to get famous and big. But there are so many bands most of us haven't even heard of - bands who pile themselves into a stinking van and tour the country just to play their music. If I was one of them, I'd want to strangle the guy who spent 7 seconds to write "i'm lovin it" and get paid by McHurlburger's. It's one way or another: Either you respect music for the art that it is, or you look at it as just another way to sell ish, like all TV shows are, even sports, every commercial is "Watch Our Lame Show!" or "BUY BUD! Snake Piss AMerican Beer!". There are many bands out there that are out there for the music, and this arsshole country will never hear of them.
That's why people are pissed about idiots saying "who cares if your music is in commercials, you get paid". True music isn't for ads,it's for friggin music! If you have a problem with that, I have to take a dump tomorrow. Be my toilet paper.
