Cancer Fight Helped Beastie Boys Deliver Better Album
(Gibson) The Beastie Boys are speaking out about the recording of their new full-length, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and those two years the band waited to release the album following Adam "MCA" Yauch's diagnosis with cancer of the salivary gland.

"That sent us all reeling," Mike Diamond (a.k.a. Mike D) told Rolling Stone, "both in terms of having your good friend and your bandmate diagnosed with cancer, and then also, oh, so our record isn't coming out. We'll just put this on hold and see where we're at in six months. And then 12 months."

At least one good thing came from the delay: Taking a break from the album made the Beasties realize they weren't satisfied with the sound. They remixed the whole release with MC Solaar producer Philippe Zdar, and ultimately, Diamond said, "We got to make a much better-sounding record." more on this story

Tim Easton Sets Two New Releases
(PR) Tim Easton will release not one, but two new recordings in the near future. Beat The Band, fully-produced with full instrumentation, will come out on Easton's own Campfire Propaganda label on June 21, 2011, and the acoustic-based recording Since 1966: Vol. 1 that will be digitally distributed via Dualtone Records on July 5, 2011. All in all, there are 21 new songs on the two albums.

From his Ohio roots through stretches in Paris, Prague, NYC, L.A. and Athens, GA, Easton has earned his credentials with a string of highly acclaimed releases and incessant touring, leading to his latest encampment in the high desert country outside of Joshua Tree, CA. With six solo releases under his belthis most recent being Porcupine on New West Records--he has shared stages in North America, Europe, and Japan with artists/influences Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, M. Ward and more.

His continuous adventures are evident in the songs on BEAT THE BAND. The recording marks his first entirely independent release since his '98 debut, Special 20, and is also his first effort recorded (and produced) with a traveling band comprising Easton, Aaron Lee Tasjan (guitar & piano, Madison Square Gardeners), Mark Stepro (drums, Ben Kweller), and Alex Livingston (bass, Grand Champeen)--collectively known as The Freelan Barons--during a five day session at Nashville's Club Roar. It was mixed by Grammy winner Steve Christensen (Steve Earle, Joe Sample) in Houston. Easton's direction and depth of craftsmanship shine on Beat The Band one foot standing firmly in the history of American folk music, while the other strides deftly into lush pop harmonies and song constructions. more on this story

Big Deal Sign Big Deal with Mute
(Mute) East London boy/girl duo Big Deal have signed a big deal with Mute and their first full length LP is due to be released this fall.

Intrigue has been swirling around Big Dealsince the band's first track "Homework" was released late 2010 on a limited edition hand-painted seven-inch. Uncut magazine in the UK describes the sound on the track as, "coming across like The XX after gorging on John Hughes movies." Check out the video for Big Deal's "Homework" on the band's YouTube page or stream the track via Soundcloud.

The combination of sparse interweaving lo-fi guitars, emotive lyrics, and lack of percussion create a sound that is sweet, seductive, and alarming. Understated and discreet, it feels like a love note passed between classes. You can expect more of the same on their debut album. more on this story

The Kills Beyonce
(Gibson) Alison Mosshart, who splits her time singing with The Kills and with Jack White in The Dead Weather, recently expressed her admiration for superstar Beyonce Knowles. Beyonce also is a big fan of The Kills, so the love runs both ways.

"Her music's awesome!" Mosshart told Spinner.com. "If you listen to 'Single Ladies,' there's definitely a similarity to playground songs, and that was my big inspiration all those playground songs for [The Kills' 2008 record] Midnight Boom. So when I heard "Single Ladies," afterward it was like, 'Oh, she's doing the Midnight Boom! It's similar!"

Mosshart's bandmate in The Kills, Jamie Hince, said that he thinks a Beyonce performance beats most rock shows, these days. "You see all these rock bands and you think they're really it and really happening but they barely move onstage, with their nonchalance and not caring," Hince said. "Go and see Beyonce and Jay-Z and every single second has been taken care of where there's something going on; they put rock bands to shame." more on this story
