Day in Pop Report for 08/22/2012
Sources connected with "Idol" tell TMZ ... Mariah was led to believe she would be the only woman on the judge's panel. Choosing Nicki would not only crush that expectation, it would add insult to injury because Nicki (29) is a lot younger than Mariah (42). As for the composition of the judge's panel, we're told by no means is it a done deal. There are 2 scenarios being played out. First, it's unclear if Randy Jackson will come back as a judge or a mentor. If he leaves the judge's panel, there will be another spot to fill. The second scenario ... we're told some of the honchos believe it's a mistake to have 2 women and a man on the panel, and a 4th male judge would be necessary. As for who's still in the running, we're told Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Enrique Iglesias are leading the pack. more on this story

"Yes, Idol has expressed a lot of interest but no final word on either side yet." On the verge of confirmation as a new judge is New York City rapper Nicki Minaj, who some sources are reporting has already singed a deal with FOX. But, due to new rumors that "Idol" might be adding a fourth judge to its 13th season, even if Nicki is an official choice, it doesn't mean that she is the only choice. more on this story

"Phyllis has been a dear friend for many years. She was a pioneer for women stand-up comedians. I was with her a few weeks ago, and she had me on the floor with a few choice jokes. Funny, charming and loving... I'll miss her." -- Carol Burnett "Phyllis Diller came through a mine field of male comedians when she arrived on the comedy scene and she defused them all. She won her place in the Hall of Comedy as the First Lady. I will miss her." Tim Conway "95 years old. Pretty damned incredible! She was one of the original pioneers in a truly male dominated industry. And yet, she was one of the nicest, kindest, funniest, sincerest women I have ever known. She is, and forever will be, a genuine, pivotal piece of comedy history. She had such a gentle, hysterical way of laughing at herself without ever making us feel uncomfortable about laughing with her. Study up youngsters! She was one of a kind!" Vicki Lawrence

The dentist Craig Gordon -- who obtained a judgment against Kim and her ex-husband Damon Thomas back in 2002 ... for procedures totaling $1,675.73. According to Gordon, the bill went unpaid ever since -- swelling to $3,320.48 -- and now, he's filed a lien on anything Kim recovers from her divorce from Kris Humphries in order to satisfy the debt. It's a pretty weird move -- considering Kim makes way more than Kris, and is extremely unlikely to make a cent off the divorce ... so the guy's probably wasting his time. What's more -- sources close to Kim tell us, she has nothing to do with the bill ... and has never even used Gordon's services. It was all her ex-husband's doing. We're told Kim has no intention of paying Gordon a dime. Calls to Kim's ex were not returned. more on this story
A Virginia judge signed the divorce decree Monday, making Michaele and Tareq's split official in the eyes of the law. According to the decree, there is a pre-nup and a post-nup, which takes care of dividing all their assets. You'll recall, it was a nasty split -- Michaele ran off with Journey guitarist Neal Schon last year and Tareq subsequently sued the guy for $50 million, claiming Neal bogarted his wife ... and ruined his life. The lawsuit was settled just last week. It's all smooth sailing now. Tareq tells TMZ, "I do wish Michaele the best and now I can focus on my race for governor of Virginia." Yeah, he's serious. more on this story
As we reported, Halle and Gabriel are embroiled in a court battle over whether Halle should be allowed to move to France with the ex-couple's daughter Nahla. Halle believes the kid will be better protected from aggressive paparazzi in France ... thanks to the country's strict anti-pap laws. But Gabriel's attorney argued Halle and Nahla would be walking right into the lion's den -- because France is the same country where Princess Diana was killed in a wild paparazzi car chase back in 1997. Halle's lawyer called several French lawyers -- who testified that French judges will nail any photog who goes after a celeb. Under French laws, paparazzi can't photograph celebrities who don't want their pictures taken -- even if they're out in public. Photogs who violate the law can be sued for big bucks, and if they harass the celeb they can be criminally prosecuted. The trial should last for several weeks. more on this story

They had a son named Kassius together in 2002. more on this story
Sources tell TMZ ... Evelyn had several gigs lined up -- including the second half of her book tour for "The Wives Association: Inner Circle," as well as various club gigs and a book expo in September where she was supposed to appear alongside "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star Teresa Giudice. But we're told Evelyn is not ready to deal with the questions the public will ask regarding the domestic violence incident and divorce ... so she pulled the plug on all the engagements. As TMZ first reported, Evelyn filed for divorce just days after Chad was arrested for allegedly head-butting her during a argument. more on this story
According to documents filed in Minnesota, Kris' mom Debra filed for divorce from husband William earlier this month. The couple has three adult children -- Kris and his two older sisters, Krystal and Kaela. There will be some serious burger money up for grabs in the split -- William owns several Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurants throughout Minnesota. It's pretty ironice ... Kris is fighting a divorce from Kim because he says it goes against his religious beliefs. Perhaps it's time to take a cue from mom? It's unclear how long the couple was married ... but it was definitely longer than 72 days. more on this story
