Day in Pop Report for 03/23/2012
The L.A. County Coroner has just released the singer's official cause of death -- accidental drowning -- but added ... there was evidence of cocaine in her system when she died. As we previously reported, Whitney was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton hotel last month and several pills were found on the scene -- including Xanax, Ibuprofen, and Midol. Investigators found NO EVIDENCE of cocaine in the hotel room. Law enforcement sources have told us from the beginning they did not suspect foul play -- and believe her death was not a homicide. Her family however had doubts about Whitney's demise -- suggesting there may have been foul play. more on this story

Sources connected with alleged victim Thaer Kamal tell TMZ ... Mark Geragos -- Kamal's lawyer -- has contacted Lindsay's lawyer, Shawn Holley, and made the demand ... and Geragos made it clear that his client has not yet cooperated with cops by sitting down for an interview. We're also told Geragos claims to have a surveillance video showing Lindsay behind the wheel as her Porsche strikes Kamal, then getting out of the car and wobbling into the passenger seat as the passenger takes the wheel and drives off. But our sources say none of the witnesses corroborate what Geragos claims is on video. We're told Geragos gave Holley a deadline of today. That's significant because Lindsay is due in court on Thursday for her final probation progress hearing. If Kamal goes to cops and presents evidence of hit-and-run, Judge Stephanie Sautner could violate Lindsay's probation and she could go directly to jail. On the other hand, if Lindsay pays the money ... Kamal could decide not to press charges and the case would be dropped. By the way, we're told Kamal told people at the scene he was not injured but had a change of heart after learning the driver was Lindsay. more on this story

Directed by Yoann Lemoine, the black and white clip features Lana hooking up with model Bradley Soileau in a swimming pool. The new video is very different from the 2011 version. Last year's clip for "Blue Jeans" was viewed more than 5 million times, helping Del Rey to gain an online following before the release of her "Born to Die" album earlier this year. Check out both versions here.
The meeting was routine -- a status hearing marking the belated 4-year anniversary of the conservatorship. Britney has had these meetings before, and this one was short -- around 5 minutes in the judge's chambers. The judge is getting to know Britney so well .... maybe she'll send a wedding gift. more on this story

According to official D.A. documents, the case was rejected due to insufficient evidence. TMZ broke the story ... DeBarge was arrested on Tuesday for felony possession of narcotics with intent to sell -- the singer's third drug arrest since 2001. According to the docs, police officers noticed DeBarge and another man speaking on the street -- and for some reason, decided to search them ... without giving a reason why. After searching them and coming up with nothing -- cops claim they perused the surrounding area ... and found a baggie of rock cocaine hidden under a nearby car. The other man insisted he was there to buy the rock from DeBarge -- but DeBarge denied the accusation ... and the D.A. decided there wasn't enough evidence to make the charge stick. more on this story
TMZ has spoken with reps for both the Broncos team shop and online store ... who tell us there has been a "huge surge" in Tebow item sales in the past 24 hours. We're told the team shop at the stadium only has a few items remaining ... including a few jerseys and a few shirts ... "only mens stuff ... and it'll probably be gone in a little bit." As for the online store ... the rep tells us, "I've had tons of calls for Tebow gear ... everything we had was online and we don't have any more." Both reps tell us they have no plans to restock the Tebow goods ... 'cause he's no longer with the team. Somewhere ... the head of the NY Jets merchandising department is smiling. more on this story
We're told Lindsay and the alleged victim -- Thaer Kamal -- have both refused to sit down with the detectives for an interview. Important to note ... neither has an obligation to sit for an interview, but it's unlikely cops will even refer the matter to prosecutors if the alleged victim is uncooperative. But it gets way more interesting ... Sources tell us an investigator from an insurance company contacted Lindsay's lawyer and said they were investigating the alleged victim for 6 - 8 cases of insurance fraud -- allegedly staging car accidents and filing phony claims. And the plot thickens ... although the insurance investigator told Lindsay's lawyer he believed the person accusing Lindsay of hit-and-run was the same person they were investigating ... sources at the insurance company tell us the alleged fraudster's first name is Amr -- not Thaer, and the last name is different as well. We do not know if Thaer -- a former soldier in Iraq -- used such an alias. But we do know that Thaer has hired famed lawyer Mark Geragos, who has already made a settlement demand to Lindsay. We contacted Geragos about the allegations and he said his guy was not involved in insurance fraud, but when we called back regarding the alias Geragos did not pick up. And the final twist -- Lindsay is in court next week for her final probation progress hearing. If the hit-and-run case goes haywire on her, it could jeopardize her freedom. We could not reach Lindsay's lawyer, Shawn Holley for comment. more on this story

Sources close to production tell us ... Knight has been cast to star in a show called "The First Family" ... about a fictional President of the United States who's juggling work with his family life. We're told Gladys is playing the President's mother. Sources connected to Gladys tell TMZ ... the Motown legend is working extremely hard to handle both gigs ... and producers on both shows are being very flexible to accommodate the star. We're told the sitcom is already garnering interest from a major network ... which has made it clear they want to rush production to capitalize on Knight's "Dancing" momentum. We spoke with Byron Allen -- the Executive Producer of "First Family" -- who tells us, "Gladys is truly an American treasure and we're excited to work with her." more on this story
The fake site ... which describes itself as an A&F "outlet" ... ignited all sorts of panic on the web yesterday ... because it offers an item described as N-word Brown Pants. When the REAL Abercrombie caught wind of the situation ... they were less than pleased ... and immediately ordered their lawyers to crush the racist bastards before it duped anyone else into thinking it was an official A&F site. A rep for A&F has released a statement to TMZ ...telling us, "We do not condone racist language. This is a counterfeit website and we have initiated legal proceedings to shut it down." more on this story
