Day in Pop Report for 01/28/2013
Sources connected with the Brown camp spoke with TMZ and gave their side of the story which places the blame on Ocean. Frank Ocean tells a different story. The sources told the site that when Brown went to leave Westlake Studio Frank Ocean and his entourage blocked Brown from leaving and Ocean reportedly told him, "This is my studio, this is my parking spot." Then Brown reportedly reached out to shake Ocean's hand and a member of Ocean's entourage attacked Brown which prompted one of Brown's friends to get involved. At this point Ocean reportedly "came at" Brown and they started brawling. The report did not include any perspective from Ocean's camp. TMZ reported that Brown was not there when police arrived but officers spoke with Frank Ocean. No one pressed charges, so police left without making any arrests. Ocean so far has only commented about the brawl with a couple posts on his Twitter account. He wrote Sunday night "got jumped by chris and a couple guys. lol. i only wish everest was there." He followed that up with "cut my finger now I can't play w two hands at the grammys."

Entertainer Justin Bieber is the subject of an assault investigation after a woman that claims to have been hit by a Nerf dart filed a police report for assault, reports TMZ. Sources told the gossip site that the woman was a female employee of the venue where Bieber was performing and Bieber and his 3-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister were reportedly playing with Nerf guns and one of the sponge-like projectiles hit the woman. The sources also told the site that the woman then reportedly told Bieber's people she was a security guard for the venue and was very angry. She then was said to have filed a police report, telling the Canadian police that she was hit by something. TMZ reports that the police are taking the complaint seriously and have already interviewed some people at the venue.
Authorities said on Friday that the 30-year-old singer was charged with making a false statement in a loan application, according to Billboard. They report that the alleged fraud began in August 2009 and lasted for almost two years with Mawhinney obtained almost $6.2 million via four loans from Comerica Inc., according to court documents. He reportedly provided statements to obtain the loans which claimed that he had almost $8 million in assets; however his account had only about $10,000 in it, according to authorities. His representative Erik Kritzer said that the actor is "feeling better" and predicted that he would be released from the hospital today (Monday), according to CNN. Read their report here.
The racism claims came from an attorney seeking permission to sue the show on the behalf of nine former contestants who were publicly disqualified, reports TMZ. Now, three former finalists and one American Idol winner have given their opinions to the site about the allegations of racism. Season 6 finalist Melinda Doolittle told TMZ, "It is shocking to see such allegations. In my experience on the show, the 'Idol' team strives to champion everyone, regardless of race. However, each contestant is explicitly told that the withholding of information that may compromise the show or artist, can and will result in immediate disqualification." Season 4 finalist Vonzell Solomon said, "I didn't experience any of that [racial discrimination] ... all of our contracts were clear about how the background checks worked and that we could be disqualified if we lied about our past." Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks said, "American Idol is for everyone. All walks of life go through the show. Not once did I see the show discriminate towards anyone. It's all about the votes." Season 10 finalist Casey Abrams adds, "I don't know why they are biting the hand that fed them. Those guys beat thousands of people who wanted to be on TV. Idol is picky, but I'm not sure about racist." "American Idol" Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe called the allegations "ridiculous," according to The Daily News. "We treat everybody the same ... no matter the race, religion or sex," he told TMZ. "I think we've always had a fantastic share of talent from contestants both black and white ... I don't think I've ever seen racism at the show." American Idol has had three black winners: Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Jordin Sparks. Read more about the racism allegations here.
Abrams, who will also be directing the upcoming 'Star Trek Into Darkness' film, was named director the Star Wars film last week. "It's very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture." Star Wars creator George Lucas also endorsed the selection of Abrams. "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller," he said in a statement. "He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands." "To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor," J.J. Abrams said. "I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid."
The incident was initiated by a conversation about a contestant's musical preferences, as Minaj disagreed with fellow judges Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey's guidance to the singer. Nicki was asked about the situation by Jimmy Kimmel, telling the host, "I wouldn't say I don't like her. I definitely don't think she likes me." "I looked up to her for a long time," said Minaj. "I don't want to be like hating this lady." Nicki says the two have had an issue from onset but they're currently "having fun." Following the Kimmel interview, Minaj performed "Va Va Voom" and "Freedom". Watch it here.
It's a fair question, as despite high-profile sets from the likes of Radiohead and Swedish House Mafia, Coachella 2012 will forever be remembered for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg highlighting their star-studded closing set (Eminem, 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and more all made onstage cameos) with a widely-publicized hologram of the much-revered Tupac Shakur, killed back in 1996 amidst a hail of bullets while riding in a car in Las Vegas. Ol' Dirty Bastard was one of the most visible members of the Wu-Tang Clan with his outrageous behavior (he notoriously allowed MTV to ride along with him in a limousine to pick up a welfare check) and inimitable flow on the microphone. An ongoing barrage of legal difficulties from assault charges to drug convictions found the rapper spending more time behind bars than on concert stages. Sadly, Ol' Dirty Bastard died of a drug overdose in late 2004, just two days before his 36th birthday. more on this story

As he powers up the car after a long day, the video cuts to Justin hammering out a glass display that reads "The 20/20 Experience Coming Soon!" Just as he hits the glass, the date March 19 is shown, announcing Justin's release to the world. more on this story
Williams was arrested for felony child endangerment after police found numerous guns and marijuana at his Woodland Hills home, but now TMZ reports that authorities will not be pursuing charges against him. Authorities told the site that Williams said that the weapons were secured so that the children could not access them and that due to the amount of people living in the house there was no way to prove who possessed the marijuana. The Los Angeles District Attorney office decided not to file felony charges. The case was referred to the L.A. City Attorney for possible misdemeanor charges, but they apparently decided not to pursue the case. Williams will reportedly still be required to appear at an informal hearing at the City Attorney's office, where he'll be counseled and warned, according to the report.

And this is from an artist whose 2006 video for "Before He Cheats" showed her brandishing a Louisville Slugger to destroy the cheater's "souped up four-wheel drive." Fast forward seven years. In her new music video for "Two Black Cadillacs," Underwood's character has resorted to murder. "The women in the two black veils didn't bother to cry," she sings, "bye-bye, bye-bye." Sitting down for an interview last fall with Steve Grunwald of Detroit's WYCD, Carrie admitted the song was rather dark. But she also said the album on which the song lives, Blown Away, is on the whole very much unafraid of the dark. "When we were writing ["Two Black Cadillacs"], the story was just so juicy," she said (Carrie cowrote the song with Josh Kear and Hillary Lindsey). "It's such a visual song, you can see it all playing out in your head when you're listening." Watch the video here.
On the much anticipated scene in which she removes her clothes to be checked for a wire, Mario commenting, "You look absolutely amazing." JLo, "Yeah, in my underwear. She's being checked for a wire." Mario, "You're in fantastic shape. What was the preparation for that?" JLo, "You know, you're always in shape. You have to eat rightI mean, I didn't want it to look where I was so cut up where it was unrealistic for a girl who was playing a real estate broker in Palm Beach who's down on her luck but yet she's in the gym every day."
"You're The Type of Guy" was written about two years ago while I was living in LA recording my (FIRST?) album. I had been in the studio all night, every night so I really didn't have much time for a social life. My schedule was basically to work all night and sleep all day; I started feeling pretty lonely. One night I was taking a break from recording and randomly signed onto iChat. I hadn't iChatted in forever so it was weird when an old friend from back home in NYC messaging me from out of the blue to talk. We started to video-chat and I realized I actually had a mini-crush on this guy. I definitely used to like him, secretly, while I was living on the East Coastbut basically I ignored it because he was known as a "bad boy". Everyone in the studio saw me video chatting with this boy and the teasing began. No one had really seen me actually like a guy before. My manager even asked me, "Is that the kind of boy you like to hang with?" joking around. It was that exact night when I heard a new beat that I really loved and thought it would be cool to write a song about liking this boy to that music. I remember what my manager said and that's how the hook developed. I changed up the music a bit to put my own touch on it. But I thought to myself, this is definitely the kind of guy I like to hang out with. When I was writing the song, I had to include something about like stereotypical "bad boy"; I thought the concept was something most girls could relate to. Unfortunately, we all learn that the bad boys can be so intriguing. So it happened "You're The Type of Guy (That I Like to Hang With)" was created. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about Brittany right here!
