Day in Pop Report for 01/29/2013
Rumors have been spinning that the "Hold Me Back" rapper was shot while in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, despite whatever motivation was behind the attack, it appears as though no one was injured in the encounter. "It did occur in Ft. Lauderdale. He was NOT shot. He was shot at," Fort Lauderdale Police tell Hollyscoop. Police have yet to release an official statement, but the police department told HS they will be releasing one this afternoon. "We are not confirming any of the identities just yet," Detective Deanna Garcia tells HS. "I can tell you that there were shots fired but no one was injured." Another detective added: "They were heading eastbound on Las Olas Boulevard around 5 a.m." 911 calls starting coming in around 5 a.m on Sunday relating to the incident. According to local news outlet Local 10, Ross was said to be with a woman at the time. Ross was driving his Rolls Royce at the corner of Las Olas Blvd. and 15th Ave. A vehicle is said to have approached their car and fired multiple times at them. It is unclear who is responsible for the shooting. Several witnesses of the scene have confirmed that it was, indeed, Ross in the car. He had been at LIV nightclub in Miami earlier in the night celebrating his birthday. Fun fact: Today is Rick's real birthday. Happy birthday--you didn't get shot. Story developing
The singer told MTV News, "Just thinking about it gives me a headache. It seems quite impossible because of our own individual schedules." Michelle, who is touring with the Jay-Z produced musical Fela!, said she's been busy rehearsing for the show's premiere on January 29 and hasn't had time to learn anything else. Even though Us Weekly reported that they had a copy of Beyonc's half-time setlist, which included a medley of Destiny's songs like "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Survivor," and their new song, "Nuclear," Michelle is wishy-washy over whether or not their reunion show will take place on February 3. "Who knows?" she said about the trio performing together. "Maybe sometime in the future, five or ten years from now, we'll see." more on this story
The witness told the site that Brown lost his cool in the parking lot of the Westlake Recording Studios in L.A. after Ocean refused to shake his hand. TMZ were told that Ocean simply laughed at the gesture ... and Brown became so angry that he cold-cocked Ocean and that led to the brawl. Then the fight reportedly moved to the lobby of the studio which was destroyed in the brawl, "They managed to break almost everything in the room and scare all of the staff members working" says the witness. They report that the receptionist called 911 and Brown took off, while Ocean stayed at the studio and spoke to police and reportedly complained about how he felt "blindsided" by Chris, according to the TMZ report.
The song, "Everybody Needs A Best Friend," features lyrics by the film's director, Seth MacFarlane, and music by Walter Murphy, and has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. Jones will perform the song during the televised broadcast on Sunday, February 24, on ABC at 7pm ET / 4pm PT. She will also be performing the song on NBC's Tonight Show With Jay Leno on February 8. The EP includes the four by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek ("Good Morning," "She's 22," "Take It Back," and "After The Fall") that were released on a limited edition 10" for the Record Store Day "Back To Black" promotion in November. It also features two new remixes ("Say Goodbye" and "Travelin' On") by Jose Padilla as well as Peter Bjorn and John's new version of "Miriam." more on this story
It turns out, though, that "Downtown" was almost recorded by another country superstar. "It was one of those songs that we heard and fell in love with and then found out that someone else had that song on hold," says Hillary Scott in an interview with the morning show team at Detroit's WYCD. "That someone was actually a girl by the name of Miranda Lambert, who I consider a good friend." But Miranda, it turns out, didn't stand in the group's way. "She very very selflessly said 'let Lady A have it,' so we owe her a huge thank you." "She really went above and beyond, and that's what you find in our amazing genre of country music. That the artists really do love each other and support one another." more on this story
"I was in Manchester, doing BBC Morning. The guy out of the blue said, 'Would you want to play Lance Armstrong in a movie?' I was yea, he is fascinating, what a fascinating character and that was itI had no idea JJ Abrams had the rights." Renee asked, "You would do it if it got offered to you right?" Bradley, "Let's keep it real, I don't want to get excited." Bradley, who was flying solo at the awards, said another thing that is not true are the rumors about Taylor Swift having her sights set on him. Renee, "There were some rumors after the Golden Globes that Taylor Swift was after you." Bradley, "No... crazy... Never met her... not true at all." Renee, "Apparently she wants to meet you though." Bradley, "It's completely made up... somebody decided to tell that story." more on this story
Sitting down for lunch, Jennifer, who's new movie Parker hits theaters today, said it took her a long time to accept herself for everything. "Not just the parts people thought were good," she explained. "I am this person," the 43-year-old star continued. "I am a romantic. I love love. And what's wrong with all that?" Though she wasn't interested in chatting about her sex life ("That's too personal"), Jennifer did talk about her mom's initial opinion of her new boyfriend, Casper Smart, who is 18-years her junior. "When she found out we were seeing each other she said, 'what are you doing?'" Jennifer said. After her mom, Lupe, saw them on tour together Casper is JLo's choreographer she began to understand what the attraction was and okayed the relationship. "She wants me to be happy," Jennifer said. "And here's the thing, if anything goes wrong or right, she'll be there." more on this story
Celebrated the world over, the duo powers fans' excitement by maintaining a shroud of mystery. The less they do, the more their fans writhe in anticipation of their next move. Fans were recently disappointed by the absence of Daft Punk's name on the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival line-up, making news of a new album even more exciting. Having left Virgin, Daft Punk has just signed with Sony-owned Colombia Records, says The Hollywood Reporter, and appears to be preparing to release a new album this Spring. more on this story
"Garden" is one of six songs on my new EP, Destinesia, and it's the first song that I've recorded on piano. I had started messing around on the piano a few months before the song was written. The melody for Garden came about accidently one day as I was sitting at the piano and tinkering around. I realized I was actually playing something that I liked and musically made sense to me. The lyrics for "Garden" followed quickly and naturally. They came when I woke up one morning after having had an amazing day the day before. It was the type of day that everything I could have imagined going right went perfectly and things that I would never have imagined happening had happened. When I woke up that morning I felt like the day before wasn't even real. I felt like I was in this new place and I had forgotten how I had gotten there. "Garden" is about trying to figure out how I arrived in this new and wonderful place and wondering if I can stay there. This really fits with the whole concept of Destinesia. If you've ever gotten to where you were intending to go and then wondered why you wanted to go there in the first place that's Destinesia. Musically, I tried to keep this song as simple as possible. I wanted it to be a song that brings peace because that's the way I felt when I was writing it. This is what I was trying to achieve from the music video as well. The garden we chose for the location was not lavish and fancy full of bright flowers. Instead, it was a simple farmhouse garden, somewhat overgrown, but very peaceful and serene. I'm very happy with how it came out in the end. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you check out the official music video here and learn more about the Scott and the EP right here!
Last week, the entertainment giant released an EDM-style, songified ad for its Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Produced 1,200 miles to the north in Amherst, MA by acclaimed DJ/Producer Steve Porter, the video titled "It's Magical" is an assembly of more than 100 video clips shot of patrons in and around the park. The mashup is reminiscent of the Gregory Brothers' famous songified news clips. In contrast to Disney's expensive prime-time television ads, videos like this may give the company a path toward reaching younger fans at a fraction of the cost. But to succeed, they must go viral. Will Porter's remix get enough people to hit the "share" button? Watch it here.
The video starts out black and white with an announcer introducing the band as if live on a telecast. Mimicking the Beatles first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the video soon transitions into color with shots of crazed female fans screaming while the band plays. After the first chorus, one female fan runs on stage, followed by the rest of the audience who takeover the performance and cause the guys to run off stage to escape. Headed to the rear exit, the guys find themselves trapped outside by more frantic female fans. It's here where Nathan delivers his solo while grasping a ladder and serenades the crowd followed by more shots of the guys performing on stage. more on this story
A tongue-in-cheek track, Skylar said it's just an introduction of what's to come from her upcoming album, which she's working with Em to complete. Though it's not her first time in the studio with the rapper, she recalled their initial meeting. "I was really nervous when I first met him but then I came to realize that he's super cool," she told Radio.com. "He makes fun of me and makes me laugh a lot." Eminem is executive producing Skylar's album which means he's overseeing things like helping her pick the songs. "That can be a tough thing to do when you write a lot of songs. And then making suggestions of where he thinks I can improve bits," she said. "[He's] doing whatever he thinks will add to the project. It's awesome to have somebody there that I can trust to bounce stuff off of and get good feedback." More including a stream.
Mann is no stranger to McKinley High and actually got his first break as a session singer for the show. The classical singer lent his voice to songs on episodes dedicated to Madonna and Lady Gaga before landing a role as an original member of The Warblers singing Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" and "Hey Soul Sister" by Train. "That was my first time being on set, seeing what it's like," Mann told Radio.com. "Besides it being incredible hard it's so much fun, they're really like running around putting on a play. It's a blast." But now Mann, who released his debut album, Roads, last year, along with his holiday EP, Home For Christmas, is thinking it could be fun to return to Glee. "If Ryan Murphy would have me," he said, right after offering to send the show's creator his album so he could take a listen. more on this story
"I probably get more nervous for the smaller shows, but when it's acoustic in front of a group of my supporters, it's not as nerve-wracking," he said. He somehow managed to get passed this fear earlier in the week when his plane was delayed during a snowstorm and he was asked to provide some entertainment. "I was sitting there, and one of my band members was talking to the flight attendant, and he told her I was a singer, so she was like 'Sing in front of everybody!'" Ryan recalled. "It was nerve-wracking because I didn't know any of these people. It was a super small airplane and I didn't know if people were going to be grumpy about it. But they were cool, and it was a lot of fun." In a video of his performance we see the entire scene develop.
In fact, it has become a story Olly says he'll be telling for the rest of his life. "It was Christmas time in 2010 and I just had a car accident. I was alright. I was fine. Don't panic," he assured Radio.com. Though he didn't get badly injured, he did hurt his arm. "I was traveling about 30 miles an hour down an icy road. I hit the central reservation [median], hit another car and a car hit me behind," he recalled. "We moved the car to the side and get off the road as quick as we can so the traffic could come through." A celebrity in his own right, Olly was instantly recognized. "The guy that I hit stopped and we started taking insurance details down. The guy recognized who I was and was like, 'Hi, Olly!' I was like, 'Hi, nice to meet you.'" More from Olly here.
The set is chock full of grooves, but one song stands above others in Fresh's mind. He sees the collaborative effort of "Life Long," which features Rick Ross and Nipsey Hussle, as the song that hits home. "[It's] just coming from a place where so many people are dying young," he told Radio.com, "Even in the music, we are being promoted to die young. When I look at Ross, who is much older, [seeing] the things he achieved, if he stopped he probably wouldn't have seen things he's seen. Same with Nipsey. Even myself, I thought about quitting. If I would have stopped I never would have had a deal." In July, 2012 Rick Ross' Maybach Music announced the signing of Fresh to the MMG family which also includes Meek Mill, Wale, Omarion and Stalley. Despite the Rick Ross love, Fresh's first big co-sign didn't come from the rap world but through his relationship with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, with whom he toured. Joel & Benji Madden of Good Charlotte also took an early interest in his career. Read more and check out the video here.
With the strings recorded and the band's 2009 album, Waking Up, almost done, Tedder put his bandmates to task, asking them to take a month to really listen to what they had recorded and try to make it better. Brent Kutzie came up the song's chord progression and their engineer put some drums on it. Tedder then came up with the catchy chorus that people are still singing nearly three years after its release. "We just hit play and let it repeat and within a minute I had the chorus," Tedder told Radio.com. "The best songs are simple, the ones that last forever, that get ingrained in your head." Though the song seems universal, the lyrics are actually about a trip Tedder took to London. But he knew to have a hit he'd have to make it less specific and more relatable to his audience. For him the chorus was the key to making it universal. But, like all their songs, Tedder needed to relate to the message since he would have to sing it ever night. It's the first song from her upcoming country album, which has yet to be given a title or official release date. "Easy" is all about what the title says. "Sit in the sun and sip tequila all day," Sheryl sings. "We'll play Jack Johnson, he's the new Don Ho." But as she also notes in the song, an exotic location isn't required for all this kicking back. "Who needs Mexico? Baby let's stay home." Sheryl's new album will be her first in two years, and as she said in a press statement, she's "excited" about it and about being on her new label. "I believe a lot of my songs would probably be played on country radio today if they were just being released. The country music community has been incredibly welcoming and I'm excited to work with John Esposito and his team at Warner Music Nashville." Read more and check out a video of the performance here.
The track, similar in its uplifting message to Katy Perry's "Firework" or Rihanna's "Diamonds," is already a favorite among her devoted fans, who have taken to showing up for her concerts wearing gold crowns. "The song is all about knowing your worth," Nicole told Radio.com. "I wrote the song on a day when I was having a bad day. I wasn't feeling confident in who I was. You know those days when you listen to all the negative kind of thoughts about yourselfNot only was I feeling that way, I was getting a lot of messages from fans who were writing letters and coming up to me at the shows saying, 'I'm being bullied in school. My parents are walking through a divorce. I'm struggling with cutting or an eating disorder.' All these different, really big issues that my fans were telling me, 'I'm dealing with these things.'" The video references those problems, unabashedly showing a series of outsiders and teenagers dealing with serious mental health issues and their gold plated accessories. Check out a stream here.
