Day in Pop Report for 08/25/2014
After the gunshots, witnesses say Knight walked out of the club on his own accord, unassisted, where he was transported to a hospital. As of Sunday morning, Knight was out of surgery and was in the ICU. TMZ says, according to "family sources," Knight is expected to recover. As of publishing, no suspects have been charged in the incident. Chris Brown had this to say of the evening: "It's disappointing that we as a society can't have fun or enjoy ourselves without any altercations sometimes. Miss me with the bullsh*t!!!" It had all the makings of a Miley Cyrus moment, and then in rehearsal before the show one of Minaj's dancers was bitten by one of the boa constrictor named Rocky. All the snakes were taken out of the performance and Nicki performed in an homage to Britney Spears' legendary anaconda performance of yesteryear, but updated the costume to be full green sparkles cut out to generously show her buns, hon. More on this story here.
Now, Red Eye Chicago reports that the "zombie" who did the biting during Arctic Monkey's performance at Lollapalooza has been taken into police custody. The suspect, named Sergio Vicenteno, was charged with two counts of aggravated battery at a public venue and arraigned at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Thursday (Aug. 21), with a $60,000 bail. Flanked by a swarm of suit-clad male backup dancers, Swift, wearing a short, sequined two-piece, jumped around the stage for the fourth performance of the evening (second full song, following "Bang Bang"). She was lifted into the air by her dancers before shooting over to a different part of the set to be joined by some female backup singers, some of which carried large saxophones to blare the song's horn-infused chorus. Perhaps the best moment? Swift found her way to an overhang above where the rest of the dancers were twirling and leaping, and they beckoned her to leap off said overhang into their arms. Big surprise, she got cold feet. "I don't care if it's the VMAs, I'm not jumping," she said, huffing and puffing as she ran back down the stairs to pick up the peppy tune where it left off, an emblazoned '1980' behind her. Watch the performance here.
In a statement, the commission said they cancelled the show because Cyrus "undertakes acts that go against morals and customs, which are punishable by Dominican law." We'll assume this has something to do with her penchant for weed emblazoned bodysuits and inflatable hot dog riding. Cyrus has yet to comment on the ban based on moral grounds. She is set to play four additional shows in South America this September making stops in Brazil and Chile, all of which are still set to happen. More on this story here.

But the duo - plus Jessie J - reconvened for their big-name collaboration "Bang Bang," featuring all three on their own verses. After Jessie threw it down with the first verse and a shortened chorus, Grande jumped in to a large round of applause - any doubt who might have the more rabid fanbase of the two? - before both traded off on the chorus, occasionally showing off some powerhouse vocals by deviating from the melody only slightly. Then there was Minaj, who came in with a microphone headpiece - possibly a good thing, because with the way she had her arms wrapped around her torso, there might have been a wardrobe malfunction imminent. "Bang Bang" is the first single off Jessie J's upcoming album Sweet Talker, out Oct. 14. The song is also included on Grande's My Everything, which hits stores next week. Watch it here.
Coproduced by Paisley and Luke Wooten, Moonshine in the Trunk is Paisley's tenth studio album. Paisley also wrote or cowrote 13 of the 14 songs on the collection, including "River Bank," a good-natured summertime jam that became the new album's lead single. It's "kind of a back-to-basics song," Paisley told the Nashville Tennessean about "River Bank." "I've called myself, for years, a river rat," he continued, saying that "my best memories with my grandfather are on that body of water, and my dad and learning to ski." After debuting "River Bank" live during the ACM Awards in Las Vegas this past April, Paisley released a video for the song as well. And not just any video: this one featured Paisley and his band playing while half-submerged in river water (using, by the way, instruments that had been damaged in the 2010 Nashville flood) while good-looking young folks frolicked all around them. Even more impressive, though, were the antics of the video's real star, Twiggy, the Water-Skiing Squirrel. "River Bank" and its accompanying video clearly set the tone for the album, showing that Paisley appears to have deliberately veered away from some of the serious (and controversial) topics he broached on his last album, 2013's Wheelhouse. Instead, Moonshine in the Trunk is imbued with a spirit of fun. More on this story here.

Lucas plays an aspiring ballet dancer whose huge balloon body exclude her from realizing her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Martin is a janitor, sweeping up a theater housing the ballet. The pair, individually, face hardships like not fitting through doors and taking the constant disdain of almost everyone they come into contact with. Their meet cute is after a ballet, in which Lucas finds her butt so stuck to the seat that she is unable to stand. As the theater clears, Martin takes to the stage to perform his own interpretative ballet. And then, they dance. Together, with the knowledge that if no one else loves them they can love each other. "X" begins as a quiet, subdued number, with a slower tempo and minimal instrumentation. But soon, a drum machine picks up the pace, Brown making a sudden, impassioned declaration, his voice on edge: "I swear to god I'm moving on." "I can see from this high up / You ain't got a heart, girl," he sings about the lady that's wronged him, who apparently likes to "heart shop" and put him "on layaway." More on this story here.
In the video, the trio throw the best-looking party you've likely seen in a parking lot. There's table-top dancing, ridiculous cars in candy colors, ATVs and a gigantic speaker system that only be used outdoors.Minaj emerges from pink smoke (of course) to deliver her hard-hitting verse while Lil Bibby spits his surrounded by ladies and ATVs zooming by. Even though the track belongs to Juicy and, on it, Minaj throws praise his way - "I ain't talkin' bowlin' but I'm with the kingpin" - she steals the spotlight in the video. With all of her songs in the air - "Bang Bang" and, yeah, "Anaconda," which has just broke Vevo's 24-hour record with 19.6 million views - her verse feels more prescient than before: "Me, Nicki M, I got too many wins / Pull up with them v twins in my engine." Watch it here.
Georgia native Hubbard took to Instagram to reveal the official photo. "Georgia corn field I can't even believe this is real," he wrote. In the photo, both Brian and Tyler's faces are shown alongside a guitar and their band logo. The maze was designed by Corn Dawgs, in collaboration with the third Corn Dawgs Rodeo. "Drum roll please," Corn Dawgs wrote on their Facebook page. "The 2014 Corn Dawgs Corn Maze design is paying tribute to Florida Georgia Line. After all Tyler Hubbard calls Walton County home." More on this story here.
The animated program will follow what is being described as a "Rasta superhero" and is set to feature original music that includes collaborations with Riff Raff and Cat Power. The cartoon will be launched with the third Major Lazer album, a follow-up to 2013's Free the Universe, for which Diplo has already 30 songs in the works. More on this story here.
And now, at 20, she's finally got her own video, a very grown-up pairing with Kendrick Lamar in South Central L.A. The heavy, ominous track and the voice singing it don't always match up with the visuals presented by Villegas. There's a soft, cleanliness to her persona that she only seems able to shake for a moment here and there, but overall is so ingrained that every time she even hints at cracking a smile she looks so much younger than her years and like this approachable person totally at odds with the scenes into which she's inserted. More on this story here.
The song, "200 Press," is weirder than we've seen Blake get in awhile. One part drugged-out house jam, one part campfire song, "200 Press" is an infectious swirl of operatic diva vocals, pitched-down vocals clanging pipe synths and a cowbell. The sparse lyrics are another highlight with Blake demanding in a demonic voice, "Get around the beat like a campfire/ Singing folk songs/ Remember 'Kumbaya My Lord?'" It's a major pivot from Blake's 2013 Mercury Prize-winning Overgrown, which was an emotionally restrained, deconstructed take on pop and R&B. "200 Press" instead feels closer in spirit to Blake's quietly released and massively underrated experimental 2011 EP Love What Happened Here. More on this story here.
As reported a while back, Diplo and Madonna teamed up on a song, possibly titled "B-h, I'm Madonna." While that song in question doesn't get mentioned in the story, Diplo did reveal that he's working on four or five songs for Madonna's next album with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who's become a favorite in the indie-crossover world, working with everyone from Charli XCX to Sky Ferreira and Vampire Weekend. One of the songs Diplo made with Madonna was inspired by a drunk late night in the studio. "I think three are just like amazing, smashes," Diplo said. "One is super weird. Late one night in the studio we got a little bit drunk and she improvised a little hook and we made a song out of it. I think it's going to be a breakthrough if she can manage to get everything together and get it out properly." If you're wondering what Madonna's drink of choice is, the answer is "Ros. It was nice. I don't think she really drinks, either." As for how Diplo and Madonna first linked up? Find out here.
Fiasco replied that he was doing "[t]he same thing that I do with the money from my non-personalized verses," but offered no elaboration on what exactly that was - the obvious assumption being he was keeping the money. Cudi found that objectionable. "To my fans; I dont know about this Lupe $500 verse sh*t. U should support his album but this idea seems a bit sketch. Do what U want tho." Fiasco wasn't taking the bait but did fire back, throwing shade on Cudi's partnership with shoe designer Guiseppe Zanottis and implying that he was ripping off his fans in his own way. Cudi didn't respond to that one and Fiasco pushed it one step further with his final tweet on the matter. Read that here.
Beyonce welcomed MTV and the audience to her world as she built on her VMA legacy with a medley of songs from her visual album "Beyonc." Always the trailblazer, Beyonce celebrated where she is as an artist today and pulled back the curtain on her family life with poignant images from home movies showing her as a wife and mother. After Beyonce broke Justin Timberlake's 2013 record for the longest VMA performance ever, JAY Z and Blue Ivy unexpectedly joined her on stage for a highly emotional moment as her family presented her with the "Michael Jackson Video Vanguard" Award. Humbled and speaking through tears, Beyonc thanked God, her daughter, her "beloved," MTV and her fans. She also won the most awards of the evening, taking home Moonmen in three different categories, including "Best Collaboration" for "Drunk in Love" and "Best Video With a Message" for "Pretty Hurts." To accept "Video of the Year," Miley Cyrus shocked the world. She left her twerking ways to the 2013 VMAs and this year, delivered a heartfelt message. A former homeless youth in Los Angeles named Jesse took the stage in her place to accept her award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the U.S. From the side of the stage, Miley teared up watching him make a call to action, directing fans to her Facebook page to join the fight to end youth homelessness. Jesse ended with an emotional quote, "a dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is a reality." The 2014 "MTV Video Music Awards" opened with the summer's fiercest female threesome. Ariana Grande kicked it all off by starting an intergalactic dance party with her Zedd-produced hit, "Break Free." Grande emerged from a spaceship before being joined by the Queen of Hip-hop, Nicki Minaj, who hit the stage to unleash "Anaconda" on the world with an eye-popping, rump-shaking performance. Finally, British singer-songwriter Jessie J joined the titillating trio to bring the house down with their smash-hit, "Bang Bang." Nicki returned with a wardrobe malfunction that left her clutching her dress. Rocking to the sounds of an all-female brass section, Taylor Swift literally "shook it off" in her fourth VMA appearance with a fun romp around the stage. Leading a group of tuxedo-clad dancers, she performed her new single "Shake it Off," from her soon-to-be released pop album, "1989." Later when Lorde won for "Best Rock" video, Taylor enthusiastically cheered on her new BFF as Lorde headed for the stage to accept her award. Before introducing "Best Hip-Hop Video," Common asked the VMA audience for a moment of silence to mark the events taking place in Ferguson, Missouri, with some members of the in-house audience responding by spontaneously raising their hands overhead. Introduced by super-fan Kim Kardashian West, British singing sensation and first-time VMA performer Sam Smith mesmerized the audience -- and the Kardashian-Jenner sisters -- as he and his band orchestrated a soulful rendition of his powerful hit ballad "Stay with Me." Several times throughout the evening, Saturday Night Live's Jay Pharoah had the audience rolling with laughter as he performed several comedic bits including spot on impersonations of Kanye West and JAY Z. Multi-platinum global R&B star Usher delivered a funk-filled performance of his single "Give it to You," bringing the audience to their feet and surprising everyone when Nicki Minaj once again returned to join him onstage during their rhythmically charged set. With high pitched screams welcoming them to the stage, Australian pop punk band 5 Seconds of Summer made young girls swoon with their "Video Music Award" debut and serenaded the audience with their recently released song "Amnesia." Before the night was over, this summer's pop phenomenon, Iggy Azalea and her troop of ninja ballerinas took over the stage with choreographed precision. Joined by the ever-seductive Rita Ora, the duo unleashed a dark and futuristic performance of their hit, "Black Widow."
"Salsa Tequila" started as an idea about making a comedy song with the saxophone in it, but since a song with just the saxophone would be "just one of the 60 million songs with a saxophone in it" we decided to add more of the classic summer song ingredients like an up tempo dancy beat, the accordion and so on. When the beat was done and lyrics came into play, I went on YouTube to get some vocal references and quickly realized that the artists that made most of the huge summer saxophone/accordion songs were Spanish and had Spanish lyrics. That sparked the idea of having Spanish lyrics on top of what was already a huge pot of summer song gumbo. The first problem with that idea though is that I don't speak any Spanish, and neither do most Norwegians, so even if I spent 2 weeks writing a love song or whatever in Spanish, Norwegians wouldn't get 95% of the song. The "Gasolina" song by Daddy Yankee was a real big hit in Norway when it came out, but literally no one knew any other word in the song except for "Gasolina", so they would mumble the entire song and then scream GASOLIIINA! when that word came in the chorus. So that sparked the idea of doing lyrics that were 100% Spanish words; drinks, foods, artists, actors and so on that people knew, had heard about and could sing along to. Me and one of my buddies have had this inside joke with the voice on the "Guacamole Jalapeno" part (kinda sounds like a guy almost crapping his pants) for years, and that's the first thing that made us laugh until we got tears in our eyes, and made us think "ok, this actually sounds really funny". So then we recorded the vocals for the entire song, made the lyric video in my buddy Galvan's room, and put it out hoping to get like 10,000 views during the summer months. Then it took on a life of it's own on the internet Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and learn more about the Anders here!
