Day in Pop Report for 08/29/2014
"It was a crazy occurrence," Redfoo told the city's Daily Telegraph. "We were sitting in the back area with my mates, surrounded by some thangs. We are dancing, having a good time, we're taking some pictures, taking the snapchats We were about to round up the party and take it home to the after party, as we normally do." Obviously there was no partying for Redfoo, a man who's made a career out of party anthems, after the incident. "I looked down at my hand and there was blood all over my hand," he recalled. "There's blood on the dance floor and I'm bleeding. That just makes you a little more upset." But the weirdest thing might have happened after the glass hit him."So I go and I try to chase him out but they're holding me back. I wanted to see what the guy looks like, I've got to see his face He starts blowing me kisses and winking at me like, 'yeah, sucker' It was unbelievable, like I had been hit in the head with an axe, unbelievable." More details and some photos here.
Burning Man is the latest to announce a tragedy during their event, as a woman was reportedly killed after being run over by a bus carrying festival goers. Alicia Louise Cipicchio, 29, died when the accident occurred near Center Camp in Black Rock City just after midnight on Thursday morning (August 28). Read more here.
The group works with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to house homeless veterans and so far have succeeded in housing 400 veterans in six states. Perry and the Veterans Matter will help fund housing deposits for 17 homeless veterans in Austin, Texas, and five in Detroit through an auction of a Katy Perry Prizmatic Tour concert package which was won by Scott Vaughn of Oakton, VA who became Perry's VIP guest at her recent show in Cleveland and met the popstar backstage before the concert. "Thank you so much for helping Veterans Matter, it is so important that we help those who fought for our freedom," Perry told Vaughn when she met him at the show. He says of the experience: "It was an incredible night. "When you meet Katy in person you see how nice, caring, and also how funny she truly is. With so many great causes that she supports, we are thankful that she also took the time and the interest, to help our homeless veterans." We were sent these details about the organization: Veterans Matter, a program of 1Matters, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit with roots back to 1990, was started by founder Ken Leslie in 2012, after he learned that the biggest obstacle facing some 60,000 homeless veterans eligible for permanent housing assistance is the lack of a rental deposit, a component that is not covered by the HUD-VASH voucher assistance program. The claim is being made by New York musician Joel McDonald, who says the rappers and featured performer Frank Ocean stole the concept of the song from his own tune of the same name, released in 2009. McDonald, who goes by the stage name Joel Mac, is reportedly seeking $3 million in damages. The lawsuit interestingly comes as Jay Z's annual Made in America festival, which expands to two cities this year, is getting ready to take off this weekend. Philadelphia and Los Angeles will host the festivals, taking place over two days, Aug. 30 and 31. More of this story here.
The Purrari was also famous for being the car Deadmau5 (AKA Joel Zimmerman) used to ferry such celebs as Skrillex and Toronto mayor Rob Ford around town for coffee. Apparently, Ferrari had issues with their famous brand being so gratuitously remixed by the DJ ("It's the online definition of annoying," he explained to Ford about the Nyan Cat theme). Deadmau5 Tweeted, "I wonder if the jackass lawyer at @FerrariUSA who sent us a "cease and desist" letter over the purrari is un-butthurt now that I unwrapped." According to Deadmau5, it was a couple of specific details that ruffled the feathers of Ferrari brass. Find out what here.
The film was shot during the Rhinestone Cowboy's 2012 Goodbye Tour, which took place after he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Filmed over 425 days and 151 shows, Campbell's tour manager Bill Macclay admits that he wasn't sure who would come to Campbell's final shows. "Part of me was afraid that I thought people were going to the show because they were going to see it crash," Maclay said in the film's trailer. The film follows the singer as he learns from his doctor in June of 2011 that he has Alzheimer's disease. When interviewed about it, Campbell asserted, "I ain't done yet, tell them that." Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me includes interviews with the Edge, Bruce Springsteen, Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blake Shelton, Sheryl Crow, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, Vince Gill, Steve Martin, Bill Clinton, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Webb and Jay Leno. More details here.
Sure, getting DJ Mustard to produce and guests Birdman, Blake Kelly, Mike Dean, Soundz, and Tory Lanez are all good gets for the Sacramento native, but Justin Bieber's guest spots on two tracks are certainly going to bring Khalil a little extra attention to his latest collection of music. The two tracks, "Playtime" and "Time for Bed," are both sultry and smooth and see the pair echoing each other's vocals. Despite the titles that would evoke childhood imagery, both tunes are not referring to matters of grade school, but more matters of the heart. The full mixtape is available for stream here.
It's a quick remix, clocking in at under one minute, but it's plenty of time for Kim to fire off a handful of lines about her own fancy lifestyle. The track is also available as a free download. Kim has been famously feuding with Nicki Minaj over recent months, taking shots at the "Anaconda" rapstress on her remix of Beyonc's "Flawless." Her Hardcore Mixtape will be out Sept. 11, with a tour accompanying its release. Check out her take on Fancy here.
It'll join the R&B of Legend, who's managed multiple pop hits in the U.S., and Womack, one of the bigger country artists of her generation. "Having John and Lee Ann join us on CMT Crossroads is going to be an incredible pairing - they are both among the most respected singers in their genres," said John Hamlin, svp of music, events and talent of CMT, in a release. "This has all the makings of another classic Crossroads collaboration." After releasing a new single earlier this year, the rootsy "The Way I'm Living," Womack announced her forthcoming album of the same name, due out Sept. 23. More details here.
This time around, it's with the Neighbourhood, the California five-piece who broke through with last year's "Sweater Weather." The band has a new free album #000000 & #FFFFFF out soon, and the newest taste of it is "Hate Machine" (stylized "H8M4CH1NE" on Soundcloud), featuring a verse from Brown. The atmospheric tune includes decidedly oriental instrumentation cues throughout in addition to a deep, reverberating bass and swirling backing vocals. "I've built this hate machine off broken dreams," frontman Jesse Rutherford sings before Brown comes in about halfway through to finish off the track, joined by a drum machine. Check out the new track here.
The West Point show will take place on September 12th and will be followed by stops in many major markets including Dallas, Nashville, New Orleans, Boston, Washington D.C., Cleveland, Kansas City, Atlantic City, Durham, Houston, Orlando and the tour will conclude on December 7th in Phoenix. Phillips is wrapping up his summer tour season this week with appearances in Waco, TX tonight, Saturday at the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival and Sunday at the New York State Fair. Phillip is continuing to tour in support his sophomore studio album, "Behind The Light," which was released by Interscope Records back in May of this year. See the tour dates here.
Mazda will hold simultaneous reveals in Tokyo, Barcelona and Monterey. Double D fans can tune in starting at 6 p.m. PT to watch the live reveal of the Miata, as well as highlights of Duran Duran's performance. "Duran Duran and the MX-5 Miata both made their world debuts in the 1980s and captured the hearts and imagination of an entire generation," said Mazda's Russell Wager in a release. "In 25 years, both the car and the band have evolved while staying true to their roots. It is this combination of authenticity and endurance that makes the pairing of the MX-5 and Duran Duran so appropriate for this reveal." More here.
Little did we know at the time that the link between them was even greater. Sixteen years ago, Puff Daddy inexplicably took it upon himself to remix the Adore track "Ava Adore." However, it stayed buried for a decade-and-a-half, until Smashing Pumpkins announced the reissue of Adore - and now, ahead of the reissue, the remix is finally seeing the light of day. Listen to it here.
The new release includes 13 tracks, many of which are solely Young Thug features. However, Gucci Mane drops by on three songs, while Young LA and MPA Duke show up for the 12th and 13th tracks, respectively. Additionally, DJ Mustard and Metro Boomin contribute production. The release is the second in a series of eight that Gucci Mane's working on, more recently following his project Gucci vs Guwop. Stream the full album here.
But back in the day, Ice-T used to be a rapper who dabbled in some fairly hard-nosed hip-hop. Fans of that side of Ice-T are lucky, because a new reissue will recast the spotlight on Ice-T's early rap days. Ice-T's greatest hits album, along with his signature West Coast-centric albums Rhyme Pays, Power and Body Count, will all be getting reissued on vinyl this fall, on Oct. 7. The rapper's greatest hits album will also be expanded and released for the first time on vinyl. Some of the new additions includes the title tracks from the film soundtracks of 1988's Colors and 1991's Ricochet, starring Denzel Washington. Check out the tracklisting here.

Today, Magic! themselves decided to up the ante and deliver full-length version of said remix, which deftly combines Zedd's signature hands-in-the-air euphoria with the song's incessant melody. Hardcore dance music fans will notice that Zedd also slides in a sample from "It's Just Another Groove," the classic 1995 track produced by Fatboy Slim around the 2:15 mark. According to Zedd's tease of the song on Instagram, the remix will officially drop on Sept. 2, which just so happens to be the DJ/producer's 25th birthday. Magic! fans hoping to catch the band perform live can see them as part of the massive Fashion Rocks 2014 event scheduled for Sept. 9 at Brooklyn's Barclays Arena alongside such acts as Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, Afrojack, Luke Bryan and many more. Listen here.
"I'm here to meet the challenge of a lot of people for ALS," she tells the camera. "This was not on my bucket list, pardon the expression. A lot of people challenged me. Kenny Rogers dared me. Kenny said you'll never do it with your false hair, your false eyelashes, and your false nails. Kenny, you'd be surprised at what all I do with my falses for a good cause and a good laugh." As she takes off her earrings and her scarf, she's asked if she wants to remove her shoes. "My shoes are plastic but then again so is the rest of me," she jokes. "You're dying to see this hairdo go down the drain, ain't you?" "Although, I didn't challenge anyone, I do challenge everybody to make a generous donation like I did!" Parton said. "Kenny, you gotta pay extra for the wet t-shirt contest!" Check it out here.
