Day in Pop Report for 12/09/2014
The incident was called in at 7:30 a.m. PT, a neighbor telling police they heard gunfire and a woman's screams. "The initial radio call was about 10 shots, and when the officers were inside the apartment, they heard one to two more shots," Police Capt. Howard Leslie said. Leslie added, 'When SWAT showed up on scene, there were no more shots." The bodies of Moseley and Hayes were then found in the unit's bedroom. Read more here.
The spat, which occurred at DJ Khaled's birthday party at the club LIV on Sunday night, was confirmed by MTV with a witness who claims they saw the fight. Meanwhile, Rick Ross' DJ Sam Sneaker tweeted about the incident, claiming Drake had to be sent to the hospital because he "dislocated his shoulder" and that "Diddy put hands on that boy." The hospitalization has not yet been confirmed, however. Read more here.
Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees learned that the hard way, as he recently revealed on "Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast." Dolenz recalled being a guest on radio legend Rodney Bingenheimer's show Rodney on the ROQ on Los Angeles station KROQ (a CBS Radio station). "I just made a joke: 'Everybody auditioned for the Monkees, Stephen Stills, Paul Williams and Charlie Manson!'" he said. "And everybody took it as gospel, and now it's an urban myth!" He did confirm that Peter Tork got his gig in the Monkees at Stephen Stills' recommendation. Read more here.
During his set at Vice's 20th anniversary party on Friday, the rapper took a moment to acknowledge the delay for Carter V, which was supposed to come out Dec. 9. 'I was supposed to drop my new album Dec. 9, but due to technical difficulties I'm f**ked up in a bad situation," Weezy told the audience. 'But I will be out of this soon and I do it for y'all. So put the motherf**kin' fives up for Carter V." But his fans are taking action online in hopes of speeding up the release. Read about that here.
But, her most exciting appearance was when she took the stage last week to perform the new non-Bangerz track, "The Twinkle Song." Miley, wearing a shiny silver tinsel wig to go with her barely there silver unitard, told the crowd was inspired by the death of her friend's cat. "I had these crazy dreams the night her cat died, feel like her cat told me what I had to say to her to get her through it," she said of the track she had previously only performed in her living room. Miley took a seat behind a piano for the Flaming Lips-esque track, sweetly singing about dreams of David Bowie "who was shaped like Gumby" and flying planes too high before getting a little morbid. 'And I had a dream that you were dying ' You sang me to sleep, you sang me to sleep / But what does it mean, what does it all mean?" she sang. Read more and watch the performance here.
Gaga did not name her assailant, but Geragos took to Twitter after the interview became public to give his two cents, tweeting, "Guess who the rapists was?" replying "#bingo" when someone tweeted "Lukasz"--Dr. Luke's real name is Lukasz Gottwald--at him. Gaga's reps soon after denied that Dr. Luke had anything to do with her sexual assault telling E! News, "This ridiculous, manufactured link between Lady Gaga and the Kesha-Dr. Luke lawsuit is utterly incomprehensible. This simply isn't true and how dare someone take advantage of such a sensitive matter." Geragos has since deleted his "#bingo" tweet. According to Billboard, Gottwald filed a lawsuit against Geragos--who most notably handled Michael Jackson's molestation case in 2011--for the "horrific, outrageous and maliciously false assertion that [Gottwald] raped the world famous musical artist Lady Gaga." That includes his next scheduled show tonight in Seattle, stretching all the way to a date at the El Ray in Los Angeles on Dec. 20. All of the dates were to be held on the West Coast in Washington, Oregon and California. 'I'm really disappointed to not be able to play the shows," Marr noted in the Facebook post. "The touring has been so enjoyable for me and the band and the audiences have been great everywhere. If it was about just me being unwell I would've found a way to continue as I did when I broke my hand earlier in the year, but to not be there for one of my family is not right. Thank you to everyone for the kind messages. See you soon. Johnny. x" Read more here.
The solitary item on Trey's list this Christmas is none other than you, dear reader. He wants you for his own, almost certainly more than you could ever know. Will you make his wish come true? Songz released his version of 'All I Want for Christmas is You" (simply titled "All I Want for Christmas") just in time for the incoming holiday season. He doesn't mess with a classic, delivering the goods over a cheerful, upbeat rendition of the song. His voice is flexible and clear, hitting the high notes without appearing to stretch. Listen here.
In a Twitter post today (Dec. 8), the singer announced the gift she'd most like to receive from the collective media for her 25th birthday, which is later this week, Dec. 13. No, she doesn't want another hit record--she already has one of those this year, courtesy 1989. All she needs is a respite from having each of her friends who are boys paired with her as though they're in a relationship. "As my 25th birthday present from the media, I'd like for you to stop accusing all my friends of dating me," she wrote, adding the hashtag #thirsty. Read more here.
Just last week Lambert was nominated for three GRAMMYs, including Best Country Solo Performance for "Automatic," Best Country Duo/Group Performance for her song "Somethin' Bad" featuring Carrie Underwood and Best Country Album for Platinum. Lambert will grace the cover of Marie Claire's January 2015 issue and talks to the magazine about life with her husband Blake Shelton, her fashion transformation and what's left to accomplish on her bucket list. "I think the latest thing on my bucket list is probably doing a cartoon voiceover," she told the mag. "I love cartoons. Obviously, I would have to be the country character in whatever I play. I would like to do that at some point." In the interview, Lambert also spoke about her career, explaining that she never had a plan B if music didn't work out. Read about that here.
Brown's weekend started with him posting a long, since-deleted note on Instagram to Tran where he alleged that Drake stole his girl while he was in prison. "I was locked up for damn near 4 months and only got 1 visit from you while u was hosting parties and taking secret trips to Toronto, going on dates with Drake!," he said in the post. "Let's not try to save face for public opinion because I don't need to play victim so people can take my side." That note didn't sit well for many people, among them the rapper Plies, who criticized Brown with the tweet, "If U Tell A Female Business Just When U Get Mad U A F**k N***a." Brown fired back, "If no one listens to your music anymore your career is dead blood," before eventually deleting the tweet and writing, "I ain't given these n***as publicity today." But on Monday, after a few days of fuming and venting frustrations all over the Internet, Brown apologized at the medium where all of the madness began, Instagram. "Being young and dumb is one of my strong suits and emotional at best," Brown wrote, captioning a photo of himself staring downward next to a very sad-looking work of street art. "I love hard and react impulsively when I'm hurt at times. I don't think social media is a place to air out or hash out personal problems and a n***a feel hella WACK for doing it. So I AM APOLOGIZING I live in a glass house and the same s**t that makes me great also is my curse." Read the rest of his apology here.
'Little Toy Guns" is one of two new songs on Underwood's new album Greatest Hits: Decade #1, a 25-track collection covering high points from her 10-year career. The album drops on Tuesday, Dec. 9. Underwood wrote "Little Toy Guns" with Chris DeStefano ('Good Girl") and Hillary Lindsey ('Last Name," 'Two Black Cadillacs," 'Jesus, Take the Wheel"), and it's one of two new songs on Greatest Hits: Decade #1, along with the GRAMMY-nominated "Something in the Water." Underwood admitted that the song's title is provocative, and that it might imply that the song is actually dealing with stories or issues around guns. "It's definitely not what the song is about," Underwood explained to US99.5. "It is an interesting title. You want that, you want people to be like, 'What is this about?'" Instead, Underwood said, "it's about words. It's about a child hearing her parents fighting. Even at a young age she realizes how much they hurt. And she wishes they were plastic and fake, like toys, and they didn't actually cause any damage." Read more here.
That meant Clifford had to stay in the United States--which also isn't his home country (the band's from Australia), so there's that--while his bandmates performed without him. Clifford adds guitar and vocals to the band. They tweeted, "So Mikey lost his passport :( That means he cant fly to the UK & has to stay in the US, so were playing #CapitalJBB as a three piece today..- 5 Seconds of Summer (@5SOS) December 07, 2014". For Ross, the logo in question, a gold display of initials with the "G" centric, is too similar to that of his MMG group, which consists of two "M"s atop the "G." Ross tweeted "WhereMagoo" to Timbaland, while his label was less cryptic, asking "Does Super Producer @Timbaland wanna be us? Lol where Magoo @MissyElliott @ElliottWilson @rickyrozay." The original unit itself has become a collectible, selling for close to $1000 on auction sites. Game play on the Odyssey was considered cutting edge at the time but as these commercials for the unit show, players needed to affix a plastic overlay on their TV for game graphics. But that didn't stop it from becoming a very big hit and launching what is now a multi-billion dollar industry. Baer also worked with Coleco on gaming systems and created the electronics for everyone's favorite party game - Simon. He also wrote about this life in the industry in Videogames: The Beginning. Previous assaults include hitting a man in the head with a wooden stick while he attempted to steal two cases of alcohol as well as punching another man in the face in order to avoid police. The rapper formerly known as Marky Mark admitted he was high on marijuana and narcotics during his arrest and argued that he has since transformed his life and has donated much of his time to philanthropic causes. "I have not engaged in philanthropic efforts in order to make people forget about my past," Wahlberg wrote in the pardon application. "To the contrary, I want people to remember my past so that I can serve as an example of how lives can be turned around and how people can be redeemed." Read more here.
The singer was courtside at the Royal Albert Hall for the Statoil Masters Tennis tournament and rose from his chair to congratulate a player from his Team Elton with a high five. Unfortunately for John, getting back down into his chair proved faulty, and it toppled backward, Rocket Man and all. No worries, though--about five people came to his immediate aid (except the camera operator, thankfully), keeping the sun from going down on his tennis-filled day. The singer laughed it off as the three chairs that he somehow knocked over are set back up.
Over the weekend, Owen gave his first interview since the haircut to KMLE (a CBS Radio station) at their Not-So-Silent Night and discussed his new locks, or lack thereof. In the interview, Owen is told he looks fairly similar to his usual self from the front, but it's his back that's the real change. "I don't even know what the back looks like!" he exclaimed, doing a twirl for the camera to show it off. He added: "I'll tell you what the weirdest thing for me is, is seeing my neck. I've never seen that before, you know?" So why the cut? "I don't know, man," Owen said. "My wife, she wanted a different man." Laughing, he revealed the real reason here.
