Day in Pop Report for 07/11/2014
Dressed in blue jeans, a blue button down shirt and baseball cap, Brooks took the stage to talk of his excitement to join Sony Music and slip a few hints as to what we can expect from his forthcoming album. "I want to thank God and everyone who is giving me a second chance to look at a second career," he said to journalists. "I don't know too many artists who get this chance." He went on to say that he has never had more fun making music than right now. "The world has changed, we know that. My job is to create, have fun, and find new songs." While he's busy creating, he announced that he will be making his entire catalog available for digital sale on his website. "We've never allowed our stuff to go digital. When you do it right, you can all succeed," he said. "We do digital the best we only know how. Digital will be handled at garthbrooks.com it will be the only place you can get Garth Brooks' music." As far as new Garth Brooks music, it may be available as early as the end of this month. "I'm going to say sometime around the end of this month. They told me to keep it vague," he said. "Sometime in the next two months. The album is going to hopefully be released somewhere around Black Friday. The new record I think is what we traditionally know as a double album. I'm getting my ass kicked by these new songwriters today. We're cutting everything except Garth stuff. The level of songwriting stunned me. [In Nashville] they have great grooves, great messages. I have a great time playing and writing again. I'm not sure that my writing is up to the level of the town right now. I'm hoping it's because I'm rusty and I don't suck." More about the new music here.
The fully produced version of the song comes from Spear's 2013 album, "Britney Jean," and now Orbit, who produced the album, has posted a message online giving his explanation on why her voice sounds the way it does on the leaked version. Orbit posted the following message on Facebook, "Dearest Music Lovers, I have heard that Britney vocal link that everybody's been discussing. It has been impossible not to as there have been many comments directing my attention to it. [I won't re-posting it here]. I'd like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalisations in order to get warmed up. "Warming up is essential if you're a pro, as it is with a runner doing stretches, and it takes a while to do properly. I've heard all manner of sounds emitted during warmups. The point is that it is not supposed to be shared with millions of listeners. "A generous singer will put something down the mic to help the engineer get their systems warmed up and at the right level, maybe whilst having a cup of herb tea and checking through lyrics before the session really kicks off. It's not expected to be a 'take'. "I think that 99% of you reading this will totally understand. Whomever put this on the internet must have done so in a spirit of unkindness, but it can in no way detract from the fact that Britney is and always will be beyond Stellar! She is magnificent! And that's that." You can listen to the clip that sparked the controversy via Daily Motion here.
Among the past partnerships between the super-couple and the super-network have been the 2013 Bey doc Life Is But a Dream, the current 10-part Bey series Beyonc: X10, and Jay's art film Picasso Baby. While appearing on the Fox program Outnumbered, Dash spoke out against West's comments and suggested he even go to prison to learn what rape is, HotNewHipHop reports. "For Kanye to say 'rape,' maybe he needs to spend some time on Rikers Island, you know, go to Rikers for a little while and then he'll know what rape is," she said. "I don't get celebrities not understanding that the paparazzi are doing their job." Dash also had some not-so-subtle advice about how to handle all of the paparazzi better for the rapper. "I've found that if you're nice, if you're polite to them, they leave you alone," she said. "It's when you start to call them names and act crazy and put your hands up and do all this drama that they make it a big deal." more on this story
Per the principal photography released for The Giver, Swift goes brunette for the role. And in one photo, she's seated in front of a piano with Jeff Bridges, who plays the title role. Does this mean we'll see her musical talents worked into the film somehow? "I will tell you, she does not sing," Lowry said. "I don't know if it would be an appropriate thing for her to sing. It would've turned the movie into a musical, which it isn't! So no, no singing." This will force the most vociferous Taylor Swift fans to enjoy the movie on its own cinematic merits and Swift's acting prowess. More including the photo here.
Khalifa broke the news to fans on Thursday via Twitter. He wrote, "Tyga dropped off the tour. Sorry ya'll." Later in the day, Tyga retweeted the message and added, "Sorry to all the fans. The singer-songwriter shows love to all kinds of women in the "You & I (Nobody in the World)" video, in the same way that Pharrell did for his "Marilyn Monroe" video - only there's no dancing and bright sets in Legend's visual clip. Instead, the video, directed by fashion photographer, videographer and Lana Del Rey main squeeze Francesco Carrozzini, is a more realistic depiction of women in intimate everyday moments. There's just one exception to the cast: The video opens and closes with Legend's wife, supermodel Chrissy Teigen. But her appearance is especially appropriate considering the pair first met eight years ago on set for his "Stereo" video. Watch the video here.
Titled Chapter and Verse, the collection will chronicle his life as member of both groups, and knowing the history there, it should make for a compelling collection. New Order are currently touring the U.S. with La Roux as opener, and with reports that they are working on a new album for 2015, even debuting some new music at the concerts, New Order fans shouldn't expect much more from the legendary group. more on this story
"IM ABOUT TO GET OUT OF MY DEAL!" she tweeted Thursday afternoon. "THATS THE BIG SURPRISE!" And the "Free at last," she added later, seemingly marking the moment the release finally occurred. Banks has railed against her label more recently since being signed to Interscope, a Universal imprint, in 2012. Music Times points out that Banks had seen multiple delays of her album Broke with Expensive Taste, which was originally supposed to come out two years ago. In January, she pleaded on Twitter for a release from the label, dissatisfied with the pace at which her music was being released. more on this story
The new single was released on DJ Whoo Kid's Soundcloud page in advance of Flame's upcoming mixtape, I Can't Rap Vol. 1, which is due to debut next week. A music video for the track is expected in the near future. Flame's metaphor-heavy rhymes are loaded with basketball references, name-checking Houston Rockets James Harden and Dwight Howard in his verses about making money and pushing product. Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave, part of XXL's 2014 freshman class, mines similar money-making territory in his signature nasal flow. Listen to the new track here.
Parton will end her tour next week, so Radio.com asked her if she has any plans to extend the tour and when we can expect new music from the country singer. "I'm going to take off a little while," she told Radio.com. "I'm working on some new music. I'm doing my life story as a musical. I'm also doing my life story as a movie, which also has a lot of music in it. I may possibly do some television and some producing. I've got a lot of other business thoughts in mind. I do not plan do any more touring in the near future." She added: "I'm sure as the years go by we'll be doing other things. For now, I'm going to concentrate more on business end of the things and creative stuff like the musical, movie and TV." Find out what she said about taking on another acting role here.
To win the Emmy, Mars will have to beat out Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis, Children's Hospital, Parks And Rec In Europe, and The Soup: True Detective. Mars drew a record breaking audience of 115.3 million viewers for his performance during the halftime show and he was also the youngest solo headline performer in Super Bowl history.
The song runs for seven-and-a-half minutes, featuring both singers on moody, cut-up vocals over a down-tempo, minimal beat courtesy of Om'Mas Keith. SZA is expected to release another EP (her fourth) titled A in the not-too-distant future, after offering up Z in April. The TDE vocalist also was heard on Kitty Cash's recent single, "Moodring." Listen to the new track here.
Even though the songs share a title, there's a world of difference between their sounds. Thug's "Lifestyle" sees the rapper delivering his braggadocious verses with an Auto-Tuned croon that verges on a yelp. The track is a celebration of his success with lines like, "Count so much money with my thumb / Everything turns green." For some reason, bank robber John Dillinger gets a shout out more than once. Listen to the track here.
The Voice goes up against The Amazing Race, Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef and Project Runway in the Outstanding Reality Competition Program category. He was found unresponsive in a parking lot at the festival, which was held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway last month. An enlarged heart condition was apparently also a factor. Authorities had originally reported they had believed Tsang's death was due to a medical condition. Tsang wasn't the only casualty at the festival in 2014. Read about that here.
"It ended up being one of the best things I've ever done in my life," she told Radio.com recently. "That's really where I figured out I wanted to sing for the rest of my life." Mary Sarah would sing 18-20 songs every night as part of the tour and it was here where she fell in love with performing and country music. She credits the stories within country songs as what first drew her in. "Being able to believe what every artist was singing and feeling. Even if I didn't go through it, I felt like I did," she said. Once the Kidz Bop tour ended, she went back to Texas where she would perform at The Texas Opry, diving further into her lessons on country music history and honing her sound. The very first song she sang on the Opry Country Classics stage was Patsy Cline's "Crazy," who she credits as one of her biggest idols. Written by Willie Nelson, Mary Sarah sings the track with him on her new album Bridges which was released July 8. "Luckily, I had Willie to sing with me on the project which was kind of crazy. I wasn't with him in the studio but I was told that he was playing poker all night long and then all of a sudden he was like, 'Alright, let's cut the song.'" Bridges is Mary Sarah's sophomore album and followup to 2010′s Crazy Good, but this time she collaborated with some of country's biggest legends on their classic hits. Nelson isn't the only big-name who sings with Sarah: Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Vince Gill, The Oak Ridge Boys, Tanya Tucker and many more also lent their voices on the tribute to traditional country music. One artist she was in the studio with was Parton, which Mary Sarah is still pinching herself about. "When we got the call that Dolly said yes I was in disbelief. For her to even say yes to this on a handshake was crazy. The night before, I don't even think I slept. I do remember when I went into the studio she was in a separate room. I was freaking out, 'What do I do, say?' I walked in and she goes, 'You must be Mary Sarah' and I said, 'You must be Dolly Parton.' She was just as down to earth as anyone I've met. To be that successful and normal was really cool to see." A lot more with Mary.
The actress explained, "What's happened is my kids have reached the age where I feel comfortable to date. I didn't want to date when they were little who needs a bunch of people running in and out of their lives? Now I feel comfortable dating." As for her passion project Sharity, Stone is auctioning her own clothing to charities she supports. "I went into my closet and gave two thirds of my wardrobe, my really good stuff, best designer pieces, to fund this peace movement in the Middle East. We have amazing people participating in this, and it's just so exciting." more on this story
Having secured high-profile acting gigs on the big-screen (The Girlfriend Experience, Would You Rather) and a recurring role on HBO's Entourage, Grey is now trying her hand as a DJ, releasing a new Soundcloud mix packed with big room bangers from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Krewella, Empire of the Sun and more. DJing is not a new endeavor for Grey, who has been spinning at parties and nightclubs for years. Her new 2014 Progressive Electro Mix, however, is her first publicly released stab at EDM. Opening with a remix of the xx's "Intro," Grey's 2014 Progressive Mix is loaded with high energy tracks and plenty of dramatic drops throughout the 35-minute running time. Grey has also posted two older mixes to her Soundcloud page, both from 2012. "I have such eclectic taste and that doesn't always work with clubs. I play a mix of Top 40, rock, and hip-hop," she told Entertainment Weekly about her DJ style back in 2010. "Then I always try and throw in my own stuff, like some post-punk, or some old school hip-hop. Just things that people don't really expect to hear me play unless they're really my fans." Listen here.
