Day in Pop Report for 07/14/2014
Though the exact details of the meeting are unclear, the rapper and singer are seen by a soundboard, Brown appearing to be animatedly in mid-speech (or -song?) while Drake looks on. Tyga was reportedly also at the studio with Brown and Drake, fresh off his recent bow-out from Wiz Khalifa's Under the Influence of Music tour. The infamous Stalker Sarah was nearby and gave more juice to the rumors of a collaboration, tweeted that the sun was "coming up" and all three - plus Brown's rumored squeeze Karrueche Tran - were still in the studio. She later reported they left about at around 9-10 a.m. ET. more on this story
James ushered in the news with a post on his Instagram page, which found the player in his old Cleveland uniform, walking away from the camera on the basketball court. A caption on the picture was simple: "I'm coming home." But as is customary with silly season news in sports, not all are necessarily happy or impressed with the announcement - among them Snoop Dogg. The rapper posted to his own Instagram shortly after the announcement, mocking James' highly touted return to the team that originally drafted him out of high school. Using a setup nearly identical to James', Snoop's post features Kobe Bryant, also with his back turned to the camera, with the accompanying caption of "I never left." more on this story
"My mom flew with me to the rehab centre," she began. "The first day of treatment was the scariest day of my life." Describing her early days in the clinic, she recalled sitting alone in a bare room clutching a stuffed lion that her mother gave to her. "I worried what people would think. I was battling an eating disorder - but I knew people would assume I was here for other things," the pop star said. "Sure, I've written songs about partying, but my dirty little secret is that I'm actually incredibly responsible." "But what landed me here?" she asked. After a big tour she felt drained: "My body was shutting down, and I knew why. I've always tried to be a crusader for loving yourself, but I'd been finding it harder and harder to do personally. I felt like part of my job was to be as skinny as possible, and to make that happen, I had been abusing my body I had to learn to treat my body with respect. "The music industry has set unrealistic expectations for what a body is supposed to look like and I started becoming overly critical of my own body because of that I felt like a liar, telling people to love themselves as they are, while I was being really hateful to myself and really hurting my body." more on this story
"The funniest moment was having Katy Perry in the studio singing, 'Woke up this morning feeling so blessed' and writing a whole song to the Rootsman Riddim while Jesse did the dub for 'Modern Day Judas,'" Walshy Fire said to Jah Blem Muzik, a roots-reggae blog. "Watching her catch that reggae vibe was the best part of recording." It's hard to tell whether Perry was around to just hang out or, whether it was a collaboration for a release of her's, Major Lazer's or Jesse Royal's. Watch a brief video posted on Royal's YouTube channel here.
Re-dubbed "THC Believe," Juicy's rendition of the track, opened by Drake's hook, sees him delivering real talk over the original song's minimal beat. Given the title, you know there's going to be a marijuana reference but Juicy quickly drops it - "I'm high off kush s***/ Flier than Peter Pan" and moves on. He spends the second half of the song taking down inflated ideas of rappers' so-called glamorous lifestyles. "Everybody rapping about a check / promise if you look closer, n***** really in debt," he raps. "And all these n***** rich on the internet / That's a rented car, and that's a borrowed chain / Worldstar front page, now you got some fame / Juicy J, certified OG / With all this bread I got, who needs beef?" Listen here.
The rapper actually has two albums nearing release, as he told XXL. On top of Turn Up God due in the fall, Flockavelli 2 will be hitting the market this winter, providing a proper sequel for his popular debut. "It's been done but I keep making records," he said on the sequel. "The more we sit, the more good records and s-t we'll be pilling up. We got to put this s-t together." On tap for his traditional rap album is production from 808 Mafia, Lex Luger Jojo [Ryder], and Mike WiLL Made. See the guest list for the EDM album here.
Gathering sentiments from "want to high five myself" to "#burgering" to "it will improve my summer lunch game" the up tempo track explores the rainbow of ways people paid their thanks to Wendy's for bringing the pretzel bun back after a year off their menu. The guys even croon an emoticon, referring to it as "little hand sign that means okay." The group debuted their pretzel love song in New York City's Times Square on July 9 and performed a few other love songs for the crowd. more on this story
No doubt there were men attending this show, but the train from Penn Station to the Meadowlands complex I rode was packed with women, mostly aged 21-35, in cotton dresses or rompers carrying clutches. Their conversations with each other were peppered with lyrics - references to Yonce and citations from "***Flawless" among the most popular. It may be Jay Z's home, but it was about to be Beyonce's night. As the show began, it became clear: A Bey & Jay show is exactly the theatrical event you'd expect. It takes the minimalist design of Watch the Throne (and Jay's following Magna Carta tour) and splices it with sensory overload of Beyonce's 2013 live events, including using her signature short films between songs to keep things moving between costume and set changes. The setlist is also a Girl Talk inspired affair, with snippets of Jay and Bey hits circling around each other. It's also of the variety show tradition - no songs were played in full, but a few choruses and a verse would be trotted out before morphing into a new song. There were a few B-sides, but mostly hit after hit after hit. Rumors have swirled since the tour's launch in Miami that the duo may be headed for divorce when Beyonce changed the lyrics of her song "Resentment," (widely considered to be a song about infidelity) to reflect the number of years she has been with her husband. Beyonce's performance of the same song at the Philadelphia show on July 5 closed with a video in which her voice over told the audience, "Love is an act of endless forgiveness." But none of that angst was on display at this show. In fact, the pair seemed to be at their best when they shared the stage. During their solo material Beyonce stayed in character and Jay Z depended heavily on vocalizations from the audience. But when they shared a performance, every single time, Bey would let her guard down at a flirty or jokey something Jay did to bait her. They were the perfect image of a couple genuinely enjoying each other's company. more including photos.
That doesn't mean Sia wouldn't like to reach new listeners, and if the artists that have been remixing "Chandelier" have their say, Sia will be known in a variety of music circles when all is said and done. Hot on the heels of a Four Tet remix, Blood Orange mastermind Dev Hynes has offered up his take on the Aussie songwriter's lead single. And guess what? It sounds like a Blood Orange song. Check out the remix here.
In the music video for the song, which was released Friday (July 11), McCreery and friends bring the song to life on the open road, in the sand and on the beach. "Kick back, relax, just chillin'/ I'm feelin', I'm feelin' it," he sings on the chorus. In the clip, which was directed by Roman White, McCreery heads for a drive where the blacktop ends and finds himself visiting lighthouses and hitting up the Dune Burger before his beach party begins. After a day of kayaking, jumping the waves with friends and seeing what's rockin' on the iPod, he takes out his guitar for a campfire sing along. And who doesn't like one of those? Watch it here.
That's probably because he's since parted ways with the label who released it, Gucci Mane's 1017 Brick Squad. This material was most likely the last he recorded with them. Thug should be proud, though. The first noticeable difference is that the production quality has vastly improved since his last tape. Additionally, where 1017 Thug was guest-heavy, with spots from Gucci Mane, Young Scooter, PeeWee Longway, OG Boo Dirty Heavy, Wicced and Maceo, its followup only features two rappers, Quavo and MPA Wicced. One familiar track on the release is "Lifestyle," Thug's celebration of his success, which we heard last week. Grab the whole thing here.
Either way, the album is now being billed as by Tweedy, covering all the bases. Counting the track shared last week, we have now heard three songs from this family band/family man, and the album is still more than two months from release. Our latest taste is the sweet lullaby "Wait for Love," in which we get some Tweedy whistling during the middle section, allowing it to join "The Ruling Class," "Dawned On Me," and "Red-Eyed and Blue" in the Jeff Tweedy whistling hall of fame. Check out the cozy blanket of a song here.
The MeKanics-produced track sees the trio finding as many ways as they can to play off the names of a veritable smorgasbord of singers then and now. Among them: Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J Blige, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Erykah Badu, Ashanti, Brandy, Kelly Rowland, Lauryn Hill and even Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Yeah, it's extensive. While the song might have been intended as a tribute, in the minds of Montana, Wale, and Fabolous, it comes off instead as a grocery list of their sexual fantasies. Listen here.
"Where's trap music without UGK?" boasts MiMOSA's Soundcloud page for the tune. "A nod to the Port Arthur, TX sound that gave rise to the trap music movement, this straight-ahead banger reinvigorates the old rap roots that have rusted into disrepair." The song is set to be the lead single from MiMOSA's upcoming album, Future Trill Vol. 2, which is scheduled for release August 12 and is currently available for pre-order via iTunes. more on this story
