Day in Pop Report for 07/18/2014
Mike Veeck, son of late baseball team owner and promotion whiz Bill Veeck, has announced "Disco Demolition Night 2: You Better Belieb It" at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park, the home stadium of New York Yankees farm team the Charleston RiverDogs. The event will take place this Saturday, July 19. Mike Veeck was the Chicago White Sox's promotions director in 1979 (when his father was the team's owner), and helped to organize the original "Disco Demolition Night." This weekend's event will allow any fan who shows up donating a Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus album (or merchandise associated with either act) $1 admission; the Bieber and Cyrus swag will be demolished after the game. "Like so many, we have taken special exception to Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus's music along with his numerous run-ins with the law and her controversial performances," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "'Disco Demolition 2′ is dedicated to the eradication of their dread musical disease, like the original 'Disco Demolition' attempted to do. We are going to take Bieber and Cyrus's merchandise and memorabilia, put it in a giant box, and blow it to smithereens. It is all in good fun, and we guarantee there won't be a forfeit of a game." The original "Disco Demolition Night" did lead to a forfeit: that event invited fans to show up with disco records, which would allow them to be admitted to the game for 98 cents. Then, between the two games of a White Sox/Tigers double-header, local shock jock Steve Dahl would destroy the records by blowing them up. Fans stormed the field and the second game was eventually called due to unplayable conditions on the field. The White Sox forfeited the second game to Detroit. more on this story
Entitled "Carbon Copy Cookie Cutter," Deadmau5 teased the new tune with a series of tweets sent out to his almost 3 million Twitter followers. Stating that he was "making some incredibly cheesy s-t for lols" and that "this should be illegal," he went on to announce that after a mere 30 minutes of working on it, the track was available for free, adding "of course, I don't have the balls to sell this to you." Some fans seem conflicted with the trolling aspect of the track, with one of Deadmau5′s Twitter followers who goes by "Rebound" lamenting, "it's so weird. I get that it's kind of a troll. But like, it's still got your spin on it so I can't help but like it." Listen to "Carbon Copy Cookie Cutter" here.
According to CBS Boston, police investigated the home, which was once owned by the late president, at around 9:30 pm after receiving a call from Ted Kennedy, Jr about a possible intruder. Kennedy, Jr said he had called the home to check in on his teenage son who was staying there, but instead the phone was answered by a man named James Lacroix. Investigators say they found a black Corvette parked outside and Lacroix inside, sitting on a couch reading a book. He told the cops he had arrived at the home at around 6:30 pm and was able to walk in through an unlocked door. "Earlier in the evening, when the teen first got home, the intruder was already there. They had a conversation. The teen thought it was a family friend," the Police Chief told reporters. "This is the Kennedy family, so they're used to having a lot of visitors, a lot of friends down there. He thought, perhaps, it was an associate of his father or other family member. When investigators asked Lacroix why he came to the home, Lacroix calmly told them he was looking for Perry and JFK. more on this story
"I've been holed up making a record for the last year and anyone who knows me knows how much I miss playing, miss the fans, but especially miss the culture the people who love this music bring with them," Chesney said in a press release. "Obviously, this isn't going to be one of those huge shows we do, but it's gonna be a long day, a whole lotta music and even more fun." The concert will take place where Orange Beach and the Gulf Shores meet Perdido Key and Chesney said the idea came to him with the release of his new single "American Kids." more on this story
Pharrell is up for Video of the Year and Best Pop Video for "Happy" and has two nominations in Best Male Video for "Happy" and "Sing," Ed Sheeran's song on which he's featured. Meanwhile, Beyonc scored a monster eight nominations, including Video of the Year for "Drunk in Love," Best Choreography and Female Video for "Partition" and Best Video With a Social Message for "Pretty Hurts." The other video of the year nominees include Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX's "Fancy," Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" and "Chandelier" by Sia. Iggy Azalea also earned two noms in the Best Pop Video category for "Fancy" and Ariana Grande's "Problem." Though odds are in her favor she'll still have to beat out Pharrell, Avicii and Jason Derulo. Lorde gets the honor of being the only female who earned a nomination for Best Rock Video this year, going up against the Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys, Imagine Dragons and Linkin Park. More including the full nomination list here.
This time, he's tackling "Fancy," Iggy Azalea's undisputed song of the summer, and turning it into a song about how he's a boss at home improvement. "Handy," from Al's Mandatory Fun, finds the comedy artist decked out in his work clothes as he hits your home to do some serious home repair, from busted front windows to creepy crawlers in your walls. "I'm so handy / You already know," he sings on the chorus. "I'll fix your plumbing / When your toilets overflow." "Handy" finds Weird Al back in the rap game, which is certainly welcome; his first top 10 hit, "White & Nerdy," was a parody of Chamillionaire's "Ridin'" and helped vault him back into major relevancy in 2006. "Let me glue that, glue that / Screw that, screw that," Yankovic sings as he redoes your patio, rocks his screwdriver and much, much more. Check it out here.
Wednesday night (July 16), the Views From the 6 rapper pulled out all the stops for the sports awards show. He read love poems about his basketball crush Skylar Duggins, who came out and rebuffed his advances by asking him to stop his craziness. "Crazy might be a little judgmental on your part," Drake said without missing a beat. Drake did a parody of his own song "Worst Behaviour" aimed at Donald Sterling and sang a song called "Honorable Mentions" that was for all the losers out there explaining, "real talent doesn't always win championships, like real music doesn't always win GRAMMYs" with a photo of Macklemore popping up on the screen behind him. We all know how Drizzy feels about Macklemore's Best Rap Album win. He later brought out Brian McKnight to croon alongside him on a track called "Side Pieces," about well, you guessed it, side pieces. He even promised to be that for Skylar Duggins as he used a lot of sports metaphors to talk about those girls who will just always be second best. Drake also did a performance of Frozen juggernaut "Let It Go" as boxer Manny Pacquiao. In a wig and fake goatee, Drake belts out the song in his best Filipino accent. He also manages to make a few pee jokes and a pretty good Floyd Mayweather joke. "Well, to me, it's warmer in July so I'm not really worried about the May weather." Watch it here.
PEOPLE reports that Eldredge celebrated his No. 1 song this past Wednesday (July 16) by going on a shark expedition with some friends. The experience was arranged through nonprofit group Rock the Ocean. And guess what? There was no cage! "Getting past the fear of breathing underwater was the first step," he told PEOPLE Country after the dive. "But when you get to the bottom it's so peaceful and quiet. Our second dive was to this beautiful old shipwreck, and sharks were everywhere. The people who ran it told us the sharks are curious and would be swimming all around, but respect them and be smart and we'd be fine. I decided right away to be smart!" Eldredge swam into the depths holding his No. 1 plaque and gold single plaque in hand for a photo opp. "I love going to No. 1 parties, everybody gets their plaques and gets their pictures taken," he said. "I had this idea to get the No. 1 plaque and gold single plaque and take them down with us. I swam over to the shipwreck with the plaques and the sharks, and we snapped some photos. It was such a surreal feeling. I am definitely hooked on sharks!" more on this story
The fest will be held from Oct. 3-5 and takes its name from Las Vegas Boulevard. Additional artists will include Tyler Farr, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Houser, Dustin Lynch, Neal McCoy, Charles Esten and Clare Bowen from Nashville, Dan + Shay, Josh Thompson, Sam Hunt, Ashley Monroe, Lindsay Ell and Dee Jay Silver. "Las Vegas and country music are synonymous with over the top events, and we know that Route 91 Harvest will deliver the latest, greatest experience for fans from all over the world," said Brian O'Connell, Live Nation president of country touring. "After launching Watershed and Faster Horses, this festival is the next step in the evolution of Live Nation's fan and artist friendly festival family. We're thrilled to have it land in MGM Resorts International's newest venue, The Lot." Check out the full lineup here.
In case Drake never makes a full on dance album, DJ Paypal has provided some idea of what that could sound like. His remix collection is stamped with his signature 160bpm and dabbles in footwork, jersey club, and reggaeton - which is appropriate considering Drake worked on his debut album Thank Me Later in Jamaica and the album's lead single closes DJ Paypal's project. On the slow-burning closer "Over," he sends Drake's vocals through a high-pitched processor, transforming the song into a glimmering cool down moment. It's only towards the end that you can actually recognize the track, when DJ Paypal reveals a sliver of the song's original hook. You can stream DJ Paypal's edits here.
But his contribution to Jeezy's "Seen It All" found Hova delving into a different part of himself. The nostalgic, the raw, the weepy. Yeah, Jay Z got teary-eyed. The verse, which took the rapper less than an hour to complete, deals with his drug-slangin' past, and as Jeezy tells MTV News, they "got on the phone and [Jay] was like, 'Yo, Jeezy, when I was writing the verse I had tears in my eyes, man,' because it took him so far back to Marcy. Every bar in that song was real - I put my hand on the Bible." more on this story
In "The Pressure," Aiko is struggling to decide between working on the problems of the relationship and just letting it go, a decision that she's finding tough to come to. The issue? While she enjoys her lover's company, maybe it's not worth her while. "The way you feel this is not my problem," she sings. "I don't want to see you go / But I don't have time to solve this." The conflicting lyrics are set over a minimal beat with occasional piano melodies and subdued guitar. Listen here.
And it's very different from the one before. In an interview with Radio.com this week, Owen said his next single will be the powerful ballad "What We Ain't Got." "It's a big, big step for me to put out a song that's a ballad that has a lot of meaning behind it," he told Radio.com. "It's a deep song that deals on a lot of levels with everyone looking at their own life. We all work so hard day to day, and we want more and more and more. This is a world of wanting more. It's a song about looking at where you are and appreciating what you have, 'cause once it's gone we all want what we don't have." Owen said that it's important at this time in his career to put out a song with depth and validity. "That's what country music was based on, great songs," he said. "What We Ain't Got" was written by Travis Meadows and Travis Jerome Goff, and the song's deep meaning is what convinced Owen to cut it for himself. "I am really happy with where I am in my life, with a wife and a little 2-year-old girl and a great career and a headline tour. But I still find every day I wake up I find things that I want more," Owen said. "That's why this song really related to me. The main chorus of this song has the meaning of a guy losing his girl and wanting her back after realizing that everything he wanted previous to her leaving is what drew her away or took her away." Then Mensa's trip down the rabbit hole begins, in theory. In reality the clip doesn't quite live up to the Alice in Wonderland fable, giving us only fuzzy focus edges and occasional effects to create the sense we're seeing some altered state through Mensa's eyes. He does perfectly normal things, like partying with his friends, skateboarding in Hollywood and driving around the city with some girls. This wild ride, as it turns out, is only happening in his imagination. Chance the Rapper stops by to try and snap him out of it, but he's having a very realistic waking dream. The moral of the story, as it often is: don't do drugs, kids. All the things you'll imagine you could do are just things you could really be doing, even if the girls are hotter in your imagination. Watch it here.
The track wastes no time leading up to Raekwon's freestyle. His verse starts as soon as you hit play and trickles out mid-way through the song, which ends with the sample, pristine and lengthy. So far the Wu-Tang Clan member has taken on Teena Marie's "Ooh La La La," the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark," Rose Royce's "Wishing on a Star," and Horace Brown's "Trippin." Listen here.
That said, Ware took to her Instagram to share her new album's title and cover. Yeah, the first single turns out to be the title track, with Tough Love following up Devotion, her acclaimed debut. Sure, the sentiments may be a little vague and all-encompassing, but Ware's music is vivid enough to make these irrelevant. The album will be released on Island/Cherry Tree and is expected to feature guests Ed Sheeran, Drake, Nineteen85, and Miguel. Check out the cover here.
The rapper was approached by TMZ on Thursday (July 17) to get his opinion on the news. "It's a beautiful thing," he said, also referencing Marvel's decision to have the character of Thor be a woman in an upcoming series as well. "It's the way the world is. The diversity in comic books is just showing where we are as people. I think we gotta see superheroes in diversity so we all know we're all together." Common should have something to say on the matter. In 2008, it was reported that he would play Green Lantern in a Justice League project, but all was eventually scrapped. The character eventually got its own feature-length film in 2011, with Ryan Reynolds as the titular star. more on this story
However, according to Mainstreet, Hamm will remain an investor in the company. Very involved in all aspects of the process, in an interview in March, Hamm said Young is full of ideas. "I talk to him like clockwork five times a day," Hamm told TheStreet during the March interview. "The conversation always starts out, 'John? It's Neil. I've been thinking ' And what comes next is something new for the Web site or some new idea for the player." Young launched a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year for his project, which includes an online music store and the PonoPlayer. The campaign raised upwards of $6.2 million. more on this story
