Day in Pop Report for 11/17/2014
The popstar is wanted for questioning for an incident stemming from Nov. 9, 2013, at the Ink nightclub, where photographer Diego Pesoa claims to have been chased and assaulted by Bieber's security after he attempted to take pictures of the pop star. Argentinian magistrate Facundo Cubas has reached out to Interpol to help bring Bieber to the South American country to deliver his testimony in the case within the next 60 days. Official charges gave not yet been filed by prosecution, Rolling Stone reports, but if convicted, Bieber faces a year in Argentinian prison. Read more here.
"It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down," posted the group on Sunday. "Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back! Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding." U2 were set to perform on the NBC late night series this week as they continue to promote their recently-issued album, "Songs Of Innocence." Read more here.
The bus was on its way to the Blue Moose Tap House in Iowa City, where Ty Dolla $ign was set to perform the next leg of his In Too Deep tour along with Lil Bibby, Joe Moses, and TC 4800. Police recovered 42.2 grams of marijuana, 18.2 grams of which were Butane Hash Oil. Seven people were cited for drug possession and given December court dates. Read more here.
Fans took to Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr shortly after they received their gifts from the "Blank Space" singer in tears, excitement and surprise. In some cases, the fans didn't display tears, but instead the very thoughtful gifts that Swift sent them with handwritten personalized letters. The gifts included a tea set (see below), a beautiful Opal necklace, colorful robes and a keepsake box. If that's not enough holiday cheer for you, USA Today reports that Swift has also been hand delivering gifts to a select number of fans as well. On Thursday (Nov. 13), Swift visited a fan's home in North Haven, Conn., with presents for the fan's 2-year-old son. One of the gifts was a toddler-sized Mercedes. Read more here.
The new single describes how quickly life can change, day to night - but "even when the night changes, it will never change me and you," they sing to a lover. The song's verses are flanked by subdued keyboards before being joined by drums and acoustic guitar on the lilting chorus. "Night Changes" was penned by Jamie Scott, an opener on the group's current tour and also a member of Graffiti6. He previously collaborated with the band on songs like "Story of My Life" and "You and I" from their previous album. "Night Changes" is the second single off Four, the British boy band's fourth studio album. The album is due out Monday, Nov. 17, in the United States. Listen here.
This twinkling track, which as Charli told Radio.com was produced by Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and inspired by Miley Cyrus, has Charli sweetly summing up Katniss Everdeen's love woes. It sure gets tough choosing between Peeta and Gale. Especially when the Districts are in peril. Soon enough Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon is joining Charli to make it a sweet, but heart-wrenching duet that has him singing about not being able to change her mind. As Charli told Radio.com recently, it was Lorde-the curator of the Mockingjay soundtrack-who suggested she team up with Le Bon. Unfortunately the two never shared a studio, but they did share something nearly as cool, at least for anyone who grew up in the internet age. "[Le Bon] cut his vocal in New York with Rostam, so we were never in the studio together," she says. "But we had an email chain going, which was awesome. He sounds incredible, it's really cool to work with someone who's such a legend." Listen here.
And while we've already heard the first single, "Beg For It," in both the recorded and live formats, another song from the album is now available-sort of. "Heavy Crown," features Ellie Goulding on the hook, and a teaser of the song released Friday (Nov. 14) offers up the Goulding portion of the song as a first taste, with Azalea's verse coming in like the salt to Goulding's pepper. Reclassified will also offer up a new collaboration with Jennifer Hudson among the new tracks, shuffled in with the massive successes of "Black Widow" and "Fancy." In the end, and if "Heavy Crown" is any indication, Reclassified seems to make a case for a stronger Azalea release on all fronts. Check out the preview here.
Just in case you're wondering what a typical day off for Wayne and Flow consists of, it involves hooking up with plenty of girls, a few threesomes and enough fun that tomorrow they'll be sleeping late. In typical Wayne fashion, he doesn't hold back one bit on describing all the ways he'll entertain himself and the ladies all night. Tha Carter V is the followup to 2013′s sequel I Am Not a Human Being II. Check out the song here.
Case in point: Bright Eyes' "Ladder Song," covered by soundtrack curator Lorde for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. The song, which leaked onto the Internet last week (Nov. 13), finds the singer stripping down the original to render it even more sparse than it already was. Piano is replaced by organ-esque keyboards, though Lorde stays fairly true to Conor Oberst vocally, sliding delicately along the melodies, magnified only toward the end by another vocal track. "Ladder Song" follows previously leaked songs from the album, including Charli XCX and Simon LeBon's "Kingdom," Ariana Grande and Diplo's "All My Love" and a smattering of vocalists on "Meltdown," the album's first song. As of now, the entire album has leaked ahead of its release. Listen here.
Wearing those contacts, while standing under a purple light, made Lamar look rather possessed and had people on Twitter saying he looked like anything from an alien to Ol' Dirty Bastard. Lamar rattled off lines about loving himself before pulling out some of the dance moves he performed in the song's video, ending the track with a little spoken word. But, for his second song, Lamar pulled a fake out and didn't actually perform a new song of his own. Instead he played Jay Rock's track "Pay For It," giving his TDE associate the spotlight. Chantal Kreviazuk-who should be familiar to anyone who listens to Drake-kicked things off before Rock joined in as Lamar sat in the background of the dark stage. Dressed all in white, Lamar did his one verse and spent the rest of the time dancing, barely making eye contact with the camera. The show once again poked a little fun at Taylor Swift. This time it was Woody Harrelson singing about what he remembered about 1989 in his monologue. Turns out he was pretty high so his take on the year is probably not that accurate. At least according to his Hunger Games co-stars Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence, or as Harrelson calls her "the real Taylor Swift," who came out to interrupt his monologue and help him sing his song. A defeated Scherzinger haunts some giant rooms, rolling about on a drop cloth and running down hallways in gossamer gowns while singing at the top of her lungs about her broken heart. It's a pretty, heart-wrenching picture. Scherzinger seems to be trying to distance herself from her Pussycat Dolls days, selecting tracks that allow her to properly show off her vocal prowess more and downplay her preternatural beauty somewhat. The look of the thing is in step with Scherzinger's life as a British lady. She's wearing demure clothes made of expensive material, grieving in a giant estate and has significantly toned down her make-up. This may not be her real life, but it's quite a British fantasy. The track is available on her new album Big Fat Lie, out now in the U.K. No U.S. release has yet been set. Watch the video here.
It's a concept album about "a Staten Island vigilante inspired by a quest for personal retribution and bent on saving his community from the grips of crooked authority and urban decay." He recently released the single "Love Don't Live Here No More," and now that's joined by a short album sampler for the project. The six-minute compilation features Ghostface in fine form, bellowing his way through hard-boiled rhymes over Morricone-esque strings and operatic choir samples. One song sounds like it's sampling Beach House. Check it out here.
In a message posted to his Facebook page, George told fans, "Due to serious issues with my throat I have been forced to cancel both the US and British tour with Culture Club." He said that he's been having problems with his voice for a few months, and at his manager's suggestion, he went to see a "top throat doctor" in Los Angeles. "I have a polyp on one of my vocal chords which has hemorrhaged and one of my vocal chords is unusually enlarged and won't close properly when I sing," he said in an all-caps message to his fans. He said that his doctors have advised him that going on tour might cause irreparable damage: "It's a risk I just cannot take." He seems a bit optimistic though. "This is a decision I just had to make," he said. "I will definitely get better, and see you all soon back on tour." Read more here.

In fact, Lotus recently claimed that Kendrick "took all my beats." At a recent show in Washington, D.C., Lotus showed his audience what one of those beats sounded like. He played a version of "Eyes Above," which features K-Dot breathing fire over a stripped-down instrumental. In a recent interview with Pitchfork, Lotus explains the story behind the song. "There's actually another track that he did on this album that I had to take off for political reasons, but it was a really cool thing," the producer explained, regarding "Eyes Above." "He came to the house and laid it down and killed it. He didn't come with no entourage or nothing. It was real special to me." Watch the video here.
Bey originally lent a stripped down version of "Crazy in Love" for a teaser of the film. But for this longer clip, the Queen is haunting the budding sexual romance between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey none other than her song "Haunted" off her latest album. Fans might have gotten a taste of the new trailer during Scandal last week (Nov. 13), but now the full clip's hit the internet so you can re-watch it over and over and over again. Don't worry, we won't tell. Fifty Shades of Grey, starring Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan and Rita Ora, hits theaters just in time for Valentine's Day: Feb. 13, 2015. Watch the trailer here.
