Day in Pop Report for 11/18/2014
As for who's behind this attack, Chief Keef and Fat Trel have both made themselves appear as suspects. After the incident went down, Keef reportedly posted a picture of the chain on Instagram before quickly deleting it. Fat Trel, meanwhile, sent out a cryptic warning on Twitter about when rappers come to his home turf. The tweet read, "WEN YU CUM 2 ANUVA NIGGA CITY..... CHECK IN". Read more here.
One Direction kick off the remake of Band Aid's 1984 single, which was originally created by Bob Geldof and Midge Ureto to raise money for 1983 to 1985 famine in Ethiopia. Soon Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, Seal, Ellie Goulding, Chris Martin, Sinead O'Connor, Emeli Sande, Jessie Ware, Bastille, Robert Plant, Marcus Mumford and Sam Smith join in. Even Bono re-appears-the only one from the original to do so-to recreate his signature line. Unfortunately, Adele did not take part in the song, though she was previously reported to be a part of the recording. The re-recorded charity single will raise funds for the prevention and treatment of Ebola in West Africa. Watch the video here.
In a recent interview with The Daily Mail, the '90s icon went in on Bono and co., saying they've "invading people's lives." "There was something almost terrorist about it," she said. "I'm really not a U2 fan but it wasn't at all kosher invading people's lives like that. It was bad management." Bono has since apologized for the move -"We might have gotten carried away," he admitted. But that hasn't stopped musicians from weighing in on their release. Read more here.
The 16-song collection features a host of special guest collaborators and producers, including Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, R Kelly, Big K.R.I.T., and Timbaland. Three singles have already been shared from the collection, including "Elvis Presley Blvd.," which the video premiere doubled as the album announcement. Read more here.
All that said, the basic plot of this clip is as follows: a fairy lady casts a spell and creates a girl group of chicken people. It is hard to say whether they are supposed to be humans dressed as chickens or literal half chicken/half human hybrids. Maybe that ambiguity is where the genius lies. Maybe. From there, we get a whole lot of chicken dancing, a fair share of clucking, and some four-on-the-floor dance beats. But when the drop comes, the playful clucking becomes more of a crowing. It's abrasive, and, frankly, a little scary. And if you thought chickens were the only farm animal featured in this video, you are in for a mid-song surprise. It needs to be seen, and heard, to be believed. Check it out here.
The slow jam is reminiscent of old school Usher, with his sensual vocals, slick beats and danceable rhythms. "I'm so down on this love/ It's the only thing I'm sure of," he sings. "Don't hold out on your love/ It's the only thing I'm sure of." Usher is so certain about his love, but for everything else he's "clueless, stupid, foolish." Usher's next album, possibly titled UR, is due out next year. The album will include features from Nicki Minaj, Drake, Pharrell Williams, Diplo, Ed Sheeran and Skrillex. Listen to the track here.
Following the announcement in September that her album release date would be pushed from October to Dec. 16, the demand for new music from XCX has been high. She assuaged it somewhat by dropping a appearing on the Mockingjay soundtrack with the song "Kingdom," out Monday (Nov. 17), but fans coveting more can get another early listen to Sucker via this new single. Alongside electric guitar, Charli is found singing about "gold coins everywhere" and "dollars up in the air," the jingle of loose chance accompanying her. Check out the song here.
Ghostface rides in on a guitar-sampling instrumental with a soulful hook from Tre Williams. The song provides an explanation for the album's title: the length of Ghost's leave of absence. "'Ey yo, I'm back after nine years, that's 36 seasons/ s**t is changed up for all types of reasons," he raps, almost wistful. "Staten Island ain't the same, s**t is lame, no familiar faces, son/ I'm dodging the game." Listen here.
"Everybody raise a glass with me right now/ To all of those up in the snow/ From all of us down South/ 'Tis the season for believing and faith and family," he sings on the song. "My family really loves Christmas-and I was in the mood, especially with the time I've been spending in Barbados with my rum, to try and distill how slow and sweet the holidays in the islands are when we can get there," Chesney tells Home Sweet Country. "It seems like there are few times of the year when you can really unplug, really just be in the moment with your family and your friends - and celebrate how great life is." Read more here.
2014 Forest Hills Drive will be Cole's first album since 2013 and is due out Dec. 9. A tracklist is currently unavailable, but for the record's rollout, the rapper's being a bit unconventional: no singles will be released prior to the album's release. "What up? My New Album is finished," Cole announced in a release. "It's called 2014 Forest Hills Drive and it's very special to me. It's available everywhere on 12/9. This time I'm releasing no singles, just the album. See you in 3 weeks. Thank you for the love and support." Read more here.
In very few words, the producer made it clear he took umbrage with the casting of the film, the story and that it was done without his participation. He took sharp aim at talk show host Wendy Williams, who was an executive producer of the film. He also posted a series of short videos of himself commenting on the film, starting with one with him denying he was watching it, although that didn't seem to stop him from weighing in with strong disapproval. "People, thanks for the comments tonight on that bulls**t Aaliyah movie," Timbaland said in a video he posted addressing fans. "They have felt Timbo's wrath tonight, baby." Read more here.
All you have to do is provide the ticket, which the woman will purchase from you, and provide the kid. The poster provides a laundry list of reason why parents should take her up on her offer. The reasons include knowing all the words to Taylor's songs to sing along with your kid, saving money, saving the child the embarrassment of going to a concert with their parent, and willingness to "take photos of them so they don't have to wear out their arms with #SELFIES!" Mars is the main focus here, going out with his posse to holler at some ladies, dance in sync and parade down the street around a stretch limo rather than getting inside said limo. For his part, Ronson, the producer of the track, mostly appears bobbing his head to the beat, taking a seat on the limo's hood, at the shoeshine or in a hair salon. Eventually, the group ends up in a foggy club, flanked by a horn section as they perform the disco funk track. There's even a keytar. THERE'S EVEN A KEYTAR. "Uptown Funk" is the first single from Ronson's Uptown Special, his fourth album, which is due for release next year. Not much is known yet about the record, though Ronson apparently also worked with Kevin Parker of Tame Impala for the album. Watch the video here.
Dubbed the Rascal Flatts Vegas Riot!, the run of nine shows will take place Feb. 25-March 14 at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. Flatts bandmember Jay DeMarcus said in a press statement that he and his bandmates are "thrilled" about the upcoming experience. "We're so excited to do something so different for us," DeMarcus said. "You will experience Rascal Flatts in a way you've never seen us before-up close, intimate and personal, and we promise you one thing, it's going to rock!" Read more here.
"Can't Trust the Weatherman" is country at its best. The upbeat song kicks off with plenty of banjo and fiddle alongside some aggressive electric guitar and Yearwood's familiar vocals. The song follows a couple who are expecting and plan a shotgun wedding. Of course, as the title suggests, you can't always trust the weatherman to predict the best weather for a special occasion. "The man on the evening news/ Promised sun and 72/ But can't trust the weatherman," Yearwood sings. "Whole crowd was soaking wet/ Mud all over mama's dress." No doubt a sign of things to come for the couple, six months later they were tight on cash and struggling to get by when they decided to rob a bank. "If you wonder how the story ends/ remember when you're making plans you can't trust the weatherman," Yearwood continues. Read more and listen to the track here.
"The haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate," he sang a cappella with a straight face. "And the players gonna play, play, play, play, play. I'm a gonna shake, shake, shake, shake." Ending it with a look to the camera for the big finale and that included some high-pitched "wah-hoo-hoos." "I love it. I actually love Taylor Swift," Carell, who's currently starring in Foxcatcher, out in limited release now, confessed. "I think she's great." Carell even seemed to pop a button while he performed the track. That's how much he loves it. Watch it here.
The song centers on the theme of manhood-"I was taught to be a man, stand on my two feet just like a man," sings Quan. Boosie, who just celebrated his 32nd birthday, illustrates the struggles he faced in prison. "System tried to convict me off testimony and lyrics, but I'm a G/ Came home with my chest out and it's easy to see," he raps. "Bossed up, every time me and my girl got a case-your honor, that's mine" adds Boosie, a reference to his trial and sentencing. The beat features delicate twinkling synths, their prettiness underscored by the contrasting weight of the percussion. Listen here.
Starting in Silver Spring, Md., on Jan. 1, Wale will hit multiple major cities on the tour, including Atlanta, Boston, Houston, L.A., New York, and Philadelphia. Expect songs off The Album About Nothing like "The Body" featuring Jeremih, as well as a survey of past hits. The Album About Nothing does not currently have a release date but is set to feature, of all people, Jerry Seinfeld. Check out the full list of tour dates here.
