Day in Pop Report for 11/19/2014
This wouldn't be the first, second or even third time she's gone topless in the name of fashion-just look to her shoots for W, Vogue, V and Terry Richardson. Plus, she went topless for her Rolling Stone cover. Her Golden Lady tights commercial was an especially high-fashion affair as it was styled by the legend Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele, the woman responsible for Anna Wintour's iconic first Vogue cover, which put model Michaela Bercu in jeans and Christian LaCroix couture tops, famously mixing high and low fashion-a concept that was then new. The album will be titled The King And I. In an interview with HipHollywood, which you can watch online, Evans is asked if the material will feature unreleased music from Biggie. "It is definitely unheard music, yes," she said. "The tone will be like Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole," she added Evans, who in 2005 featured on an album of posthumous Biggie duets released by Diddy called Duets: The Final Chapter, said that she's finally gotten "all her ducks in a row" in regards to recording the material. "I'm just getting in to actually working on it," she explained. "I would say probably in the next year." Watch the interview here.
The no-show was simply shrugged off by fellow 1D-er Liam Payne, who said "[Zayn's] got a tummy bug so he's not very well at the moment. We only found out this morning, so we're really sad, he is as well, that he can't be here for our album release." Today Show host Matt Lauer though decided to push things a little by asking if his absence had anything to do with a substance abuse problem. Some may remember Zayn was allegedly smoking pot in a video earlier this year. Zayn's bandmates brushed off any allegations and now the singer has released his own statement to The Sun (via New York Daily News) explaining, "I'm really angry and upset by what was said. I was really ill at the weekend, that's why I couldn't fly to America." Read more here.
If a father's first dance with the bride, for example, or a student video soundtracked by someone else's music was uploaded to YouTube, that would be in violation of intellectual property rights, Albini explained. "If your little daughter does a kooky dance to a Prince song don't bother putting it on YouTube for her grandparents to see," he said, according to The Guardian, "or a purple dwarf in a**less chaps will put an injunction on you. Did I offend the little guy? F**k it. His music is poison." Read more here.
One poor Grizzlies fan tried it with a celebrity, and his Twitter mentions have never been the same. Justin Timberlake does not take this stuff lightly. After tweeting the word "Grizzlies," a fan reposted his tweet with "bandwagon" attached. Timberlake took the opportunity to smash down his almighty hammer of swift and merciless justice. Let this be a warning to all who would test a celebrity on social media: within 10 minutes of the guy's tweet, Justin responded: "Uh I'm from Memphis and I'm an owner. Anyone else? #WigSnatch." Geldof confirmed that Adele did not snub Band Aid, but that he in fact did not call her to participate at all because she is taking time off to be a mother. "There is no snub, there is no nothing," he said. "It's complete nonsense Adele simply isn't doing anything." Despite tweets from Adele to the contrary and previously released confirmation from Band Aid 30 that she would be part of the single, Geldof asserted that she is not "writing, recording, not doing interviews, not doing gigs-she's not doing [publicity]. She's doing something else in her own lifeWho cares? Who cares who doesn't do it, or doesn't want to?" He was then asked to address divided opinion on Twitter, including those who feel celebrities should donate money to these causes rather than their time to record a charity single-and stop taking tax breaks from their own governments. When asked what he's say to these critics, Geldof responds, "I think they're total bollocks." Find out what happened next here.
Brooks felt this was just the first wave. "When music starts standing up for itself it's going to get a lot better," he said during the on-air interview. "And guys, there are some big friends of ours in music we need to stand up to, too," he said smiling, putting his hand on host Billy Bush's shoulder. "If iTunes is going to tell you how to sell your stuff and it's only going to go this way, don't forget who's creating the music and who should be doing this stuff." Brooks chose not to sell his music via iTunes or other existing digital retailers; instead, he launched his own digital download service, GhostTunes, which he claims offers artists a better financial deal as well as options for packaging and selling music however they please. Brooks may not have much affection for iTunes, but during the interview, he saves his strongest words for the world's biggest video streaming service. "And I'm telling you, the devil nice people? YouTube, oh my gosh" he says. "They claim they pay people. They're not paying anything either and people are getting millions and millions and millions of views and they don't get squat." This year, the group includes Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Fitz of Fitz & the Tantrums, Nick Hexum of 311, Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra, Smallpools, the Mowgli's, 3OH!3, Sinclair and the Honeymoons (via Billboard). The group has recorded a single and filmed a video for "Must Be Christmas," which sees the band dress up like a mob of Santas and take to the streets to spread holiday cheer, including iconic spots on the streets of Nashville and in Los Angeles, both on Hollywood Boulevard and under the Hollywood sign. They also hit up a bar. Because, at the core, Band of Merrymakers are just like us, and know a little inner warmth makes the holidays all the more festive. Watch the video here.
One of the tracks, "Fire," has surfaced online. It's a quick-spat, Christian Rich-produced joint that lives up to its title, where Smith shoots off his verses reminding us that despite his otherworldly beliefs on time and mysticism, he's just a teen talking up his game. "Man I'm trappin' like a hot boy/ all my failures crush your successes/ got me success has got me flippin' like a skateboard/ get on me, I'm on that next ish," he raps, after reminding us " I don't even have my license" and calling out Jazzy Jeff, his dad Will Smith's former production partner and co-star on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Listen to the song here.
The latest act to add Sesame Street to its resume: One Direction. Though they are heavily promoting new album, Four, their PBS contribution comes courtesy of an old song, "What Makes You Beautiful," changed for the kiddies to teach them about the use of the letter "U." The result: "What Makes U Useful." It's gold all the way through, both in terms of seeing all five members together again (though, to be fair, this was probably recorded well in advance of Zayn Malik's recent M.I.A. status from the group) and in terms of causing endless smiles while the UK pop quintet wax on udon, unicorns, and ukuleles. Now, if only we could get them to dance around Snuffy's cabbage patch, we might have internet-breaking cuteness. Check out the clip here.
EDC will return to its familiar stomping grounds of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway over the weekend of June 19-21, with tickets for the party going on sale at noon PT on Dec. 1. Pasquale Rotella, the CEO of Insomniac, the company that puts on EDC, made the announcement on his Facebook page, with the news burning through the EDM community so quickly that the event site momentarily crashed from the wave of traffic from fans looking for more information. That question also serves as the song's chorus, sung back and forth between Meek and Michelle. "Anybody anybody anybody wanna buy a heart?/ anybody anybody anybody anybody wanna buy time?" raps Meek, to which Michelle responds: "Anybody wanna buy a heart of a girl who just can't cry?" Michelle goes on to elaborate on the romantic entanglements that have put her heart up for sale: "S**t got realer, then s**t got worse/ So many wounds, but that s**t don't hurt." Listen to the new track here.
At the video's start, Hoge jumps in a 1961 Chevrolet Impala red convertible and drives through the town before he heads to a party and then local establishment, the Pizza Machine. Patrons at the pizzeria soon join in during the song's hand-clapped rhythms before Hoge and his band take the stage. "Ain't afraid to get loud when the sun goes down around here," he sings. Hoge cowrote the song with Jessi Alexander and Tommy Lee James, and he was planning on shopping the song to other country artists before his producer Marshall Altman convinced him otherwise. "I wasn't expecting to write a song for me," Hoge told Rolling Stone Country. "We were just trying to write a great song, and as it went on, I started getting more and more attached to it. There's always that moment of, 'Do I want to keep this song for myself because I think it's really great, or do I want to send it to Blake Shelton and make a whole bunch of money off of it? Maybe he'll want it.' It's a strange place to be, but I'm pragmatic enough to know that sometimes that's the right play." Watch the video here.
The visual punch line comes early, when you see the kid-version of Bubl begin lip synching to his particularly low vocals on the song. It is equally adorable that kid Menzel is the taller of the dancing duo. The setting (an Art Deco hotel lobby) and costuming of 11 year olds dressed like Frank Sinatra is a power-punch of can't-look-away cute. Cleverly, Menzel changes some of her lyrics to avoid that troublesome "Hey, what's in this drink?" line that is the subject of debate when adults sing it-a line that would clearly go over like a lead balloon if a child were to lip sync it. Watch the video here.
The Turkey Day parody-created by the the Holderness Family, who earned internet fame in 2013 with their other holiday parody of "#XMAS JAMMIES"-proves it's not easy being a dad on Thanksgiving. He can't make a casserole. He can't handle the pies. He can't even find the right forks. All he can do is baste. And bastin' he does. "I'm all about that baste/ More butter," the family's patriarch sings. We have to imagine Paula Deen really loves this pro-butter anthem. Watch it here.
"It is always humbling and inspiring to learn of the great work that Country Artists do behind the scenes to share the many blessings and gifts that come with fame and stardom," CRS President Charlie Morgan said in a press release. "I would argue no format has a more generous group of artists than we do and at CRS 2015 we will pay special tribute to one of the best, Lady Antebellum with our Artist Humanitarian Award." The track is a simple love song, seemingly concerned with that time when love begins and a relationship is uncertain. Hozier, who directed the video himself, takes us on a divergent visual path. He casts himself as the father figure in a small family of three who appear to be on a road trip-until it becomes apparent that their gas stop is actually a stick-up and he runs out to the car with his approximately 5-year-old child and his significant other, with a paper bag full of money.
Watch it here.
The fashion show, airing Dec. 9 on CBS, will also feature performances from first time performers Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Hozier, which as we learned rhymes with "cozier." Will Swift give the model walk another go on the runway and become an honorary Angel? You'll have to wait and see. Victoria's Secret tweeted, "The moment you've been waiting forhere are your 2014 #VSFashionShow musical guests! http://t.co/3dpA3VMjWk" Read more here.
