Day in Pop Report for 10/06/2014
CBS Los Angeles reports that the rapper went through a security checkpoint Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 1), where a TSA employee noticed the gun in his carry-on bag. Too $hort reportedly fled the scene after the gun was discovered, leaving through a exit door sans the gun, carry-on bag or any of his other belongings before he could be detained, Burbank police Sgt. Claudio Losacco said. He returned to the airport the next day with his attorney. He was arrested, cited for having a loaded handgun in a public place, and released. Read more here.
However, while some may see the gesture as nothing more than the easiest way to get around a crowd with much less a likelihood of being dropped, others aren't so sure. Daily Mail notes that some are claiming Akon performed in the bubble because he was trying to defend himself from contracting Ebola from any of the attendees. In one sense, the accusations could hold water since the Democratic Republic of Congo has had reported cases of the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection. There have been cases of Ebola documented in the Lokolia, Boende and Watshikengo. However, the website notes that the outbreak was not related to the larger African outbreak making headlines in other parts of the continent; rather, it was a single outbreak stemming from a patient preparing bushmeat that has apparently been contained. Also, it's not the first time Akon has performed in the bubble. Read more here.
The album will be released Nov. 11 on Pearl/RCA Nashville and feature his current radio single "People Loving People." The cover art features the singer, arms crossed and sunglasses on, staring ahead. "Music has always been a reflection of where mankind is at the time," Brooks said in a press release about the album. "For 14 years, I have watched heart and soul, dreams and individualism, fighting for their very existence in a world of increasing technology. This album is a reminder to all those who dream, work, and fight for what they believe; do not give up your vision." Fans can pre-order the album at garthbrooks.com and at Brooks' new digital retail outlet GhostTunes. "In my 14 years on the sideline I didn't find an e-commerce site that to me was selling [digital music] the way they should," Brooks said during a press conference, when he first announced GhostTunes. "I wanted a place that just sold entertainment, that took care of the customer, and the price was flexible so the customer could get a break. And you could sell any way the artist wanted it sold." Director John Landis, who helmed the video, told the Daily News that the project was set in motion following a dispute with Jackson's estate that is no longer an issue. Landis had sued over royalties from the clip. "That lawsuit went on for so many years, (but) we settled and they paid me finally," Landis said. "And so, actually there is something happening with Thriller." The current plan for the 3-D version is not yet nailed down, but Landis said it could involve a big screen release. Read more here.
Everclear teamed with Funny or Die to create a little promotion video of their own: for Windows 10, the new Windows operating system coming soon. The guys perform on a screen with all those great Windows things you remember as side elements: solitare, the brick screen saver and, of course, the blue screen of death. In the end, Windows offers up the new Everclear album on CD-Rom. Watch it here.
Originally, doctors had recommended he have the surgery in March of 2013, but he refused, citing the upcoming obligations to promote 2013 album True. "Since my operation, I'd just been going and going," the man born Tim Bergling said. "I was dropping weight. I needed to take a break." He added that even after the surgery, despite taking a month off from doing much in the public eye, he didn't rest like he probably should have. "I took a month off, but it wasn't really a month off," he said. "I was in the studio 12 hours a day, and then went right back to touring. It's hard to say no in this industry. You want to play everything and be everywhere." Now, he said he's doing much better since deciding to get off the road and recuperate. Additionally, Avicii debuted the lyric video for his new song "The Days" via Billboard. Watch it here.
It's a pool party: Future, along with the song's producer Metro Boomin and a swarm of naked girls invade a mansion, insatiably consuming champagne and enjoying the pool. This clip is decidedly NSFW; several of the girls decorate themselves with glow in the dark body paint and not much else. The song itself lives up to its title. Metro Boomin's synth work towers over the rattling trap drums, as Future roars his way through verses celebrating a lifestyle of excess. "I'm a young gunner ain't worried about karma," he raps, the blond-dreadlocked embodiment of joie de vivre, "and I'm just living my life, trying to get me some money, what's happening." Khalifa's new tour will kick off Oct. 24 at The Observatory in Santa Ana, Calif. It'll stretch all the way through a month later with two dates at Chicago's House of Blues on Nov. 24-25. A Better Tomorrow will hit stores on Dec. 2, Hot New Hip-Hop reports. The nailed-down date comes as part of the rap group's new deal with Warner Bros. "You will find music that relates to the every man struggle, you will find music that relates to just the aggression of hip-hop, you will find music that relates to the idea that we want to inspire, to improve the world," RZA said about the album. A rep for Angie tells us, "Angie Everhart has just been forced to file bankruptcy. Her recent bout with thyroid cancer, from which she has thankfully fully recovered, caused her to incur voluminous medical expenses and prevented her from working for some time. "Now able to work again, she is confident that the restructuring will get her back on her feet financially." Everhart underwent successful surgery in May for her thyroid cancer and was declared cancer-free after the procedure. Read the Extra report
She's no celebrity child flailing for her own career; Willow is poised, calculating and unexpected. Her eclectic taste in samples belies her fascination with rising stars of the UK; she recently uploaded a smoky cover of King Krule's "Easy Easy" to Soundcloud. "Your Love" finds her expressing emotions far beyond the peaks and valleys of teen angst: "my emotions, strange like the weatherand I'm sad. I just wish that I had died for it." Listen here.
Dubbed the Certified Platinum Tour, this next excursion will begin in January 2015 and is scheduled so far to stop in 28 different cities. The first location scheduled is Evansville, Ind., with additional dates planned in Dallas, Tulsa, Knoxville, Atlantic City and New York, among others. On his new song, "Multiply" featuring Juicy J, the Harlem rapper talks about being a trendsetter, calling himself a "fashionable killer" who will definitely steal your girl. "I'm the muthaf-ing LORD of this Fashion s-t," he raps. "Don't I deserve just to brag a bit?" Of course, you do Rocky, of course. In the video for this new track, directed by Rocky and Shomi Patwary, the rapper takes over New York City with the Mob, flipping the bird everywhere they go. Watch the video here.
The 15 tracks include material penned by such notable songwriters as Chris DeStefano, Rhett Akins, Ashley Gorley, Neil Thrasher, Ben Hayslip, Brett Beavers and Chris Stapleton. "With this new album, it's definitely the same old me," Aldean said of the new collection. "But, I like to mix things up and try new sounds and go into territory I've never explored before, so I do a little bit of that, too. That's why I named the album Old Boots, New DirtI'm almost 10 years into this crazy ride, but in a lot of ways, I feel like I'm just gettin' started." Aldean unveiled the album's lead single, "Burnin' It Down," earlier this summer. Penned by Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line, along with Rodney Clawson and Chris Tompkins, it's a slow and sexy song that marks a new direction for the often-hard-rocking country superstar. "Sonically, ['Burnin' It Down'] definitely feels like something different for me and what I have typically put out as the lead single off my previous albums," Aldean said of the song when it was first released. "I've pretty much always gone with a really guitar-driven song that's pretty in your face, and this is more of a laid back thing with a really cool groove." Read more here.
Executives at Ferrari, however, were not amused, serving him with a cease and desist notice for taking such liberties with their trademark. Ever since Ferrari sent that notice, Zimmerman has switched his automotive alliance to British automaker McLaren, picking up the 650S earlier in the year. Now, he's grown his stable of McLarens to include the P1, a limited production plug-in hybrid that's among the most buzzed-about cars of the year. It's hot enough to draw a crowd of gawkers on the streets of L.A. at a "Cars and Coffee" event this week. Read more here.
Makonnen's verse finds him recounting lost loves in states around the country. "Hanging out in Oakland," he raps, "where your friend got shot on the corner." From there we're off to Seattle, to LA to Reno, Arizona. Oops, he meant Nevada. "I been drinking these things from the bottle," he admits. Makonnen's voice doesn't follow any known law of rhythm or pitch. Like his lyrics, it feels natural and improvised, like a hummingbird darting around the register. Listen here here.
AJ Calloway caught up with the former "Girl Next Door" at "Extra's" H&M studios in Times Square, where she revealed that she thinks her marriage can still be saved tabloid stories of Hank allegedly cheating with a transsexual. "I do believe Hank and I will survive this," she said. "I will give him the benefit of the doubt. He's just too amazing... I'd be stupid... I'd be so dumb to divorce him right now and see him with another girl... I mean come on... he treats me like a queen." Read more here.
