Day in Pop Report for 09/03/2014
According to Digital Spy UK (via Billboard), the songs are from a 2010 session for 21 with producer Fraser T Smith, who wrote Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain." The first track "Never Gonna Leave You" is a ballad that has her sweetly singing "you're the only one I want," while "You'll Never See Me Again" has her spitting that venom as she did so well on 21 swearing she's learned to live without him. Listen to both tracks here.
"Investigation revealed that after colliding, the driver of the ATV and an occupant of the minivan engaged in a physical altercation," Kees Wijnands, Ontario Provincial Police spokesman, told CNN. The Ontario Provincial Police spokesman added that Bieber was released after promising to appear at a hearing on September 29th in Stratford, Ontario. More details here.
The incident took place during his August 30 performance of the song "Pursuit of Happyness," where video shows the rapper in the pit, shaking hands and signing autographs. Then, without warning, the musician loses consciousness, falling backwards (fortunately) into the arms of a security guard, who then hoists him up and carries him out of view, to presumably safety. Watch the dramatic scene unfold in the above video. Kid Cudi's fainting spell occurs around the 0:55 mark. Cudi later unleashed a series of Tweets expressing his gratitude for the well wishes and his general status as being "ok," blaming a lack of food for the incident. In days that followed, he continued to tweet heartfelt messages about how loved he is and that he's an "idiot" for not always realizing it. Watch it here.
In the first tweet, Grande manages to combine her reaction with also apparent outrage about her tour pricing, because might as well turn a negative situation into an advertisement. "[To] every1 going on about my 'nudes' & my 'm&g prices' neither are real!" she says. "[My] lil a** is a lot cuter than that lmao & tour details r comin soon." She then followed up with a second tweet, read it here.
Yesterday morning the 25-year-old singer pled guilty to a misdemeanor assault for attacking a man outside of a Washington hotel after the man photobombed one of Chris Brown's pictures. The incident, which happened last year, was in violation of his parole from assaulting his former girlfriend Rihanna. Brown's bodyguard Christopher Hollosy, who was also allegedly involved in the attack, is still awaiting his sentencing. While in court, Brown's attorney Danny Onorato argued that his client had already been punished enough. Read what he had to say here.
The song was written by busbee, Lee Thomas Miller and Chris Wallin, and it will hit radio beginning today (Sept. 3). It's Brooks' first radio single since 2007's "More Than a Memory." Easily among the most anticipated country songs of the year, "People Loving People" is the first single from Brooks' new studio album, which he announced during a press conference earlier this summer. That album is expected around Thanksgiving. "I want to thank God and everyone who is giving me a second chance to look at a second career," Brooks said during that July 10 press conference. "I don't know too many artists who get this chance." He acknowledged that things have changed since the 1990s, when as one of the top-selling artists of all time he helped bring mainstream appeal to country music. But he also said that that's OK. "My job is to create, have fun, and find new songs." More here.
"With The UR Experience, I want to give my fans an ever-changing live show full of surprises and special guests," Usher said in the announcement. "I am really excited to be with my fans and give them an Usher experience like they've never seen or heard before." The tour is scheduled to kick off on November 1st in Montreal, QC at the Bell Centre and will conclude on December 14th in Tampa, FL at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Check out the tour dates here.
"With this new album, it's definitely the same old me," Aldean said in a press statement. "But, I like to mix things up and try new sounds and go into territory I've never explored before, so I do a little bit of that too. That's why I named the album Old Boots, New DirtI'm almost 10 years into this crazy ride, but in a lot of ways, I feel like I'm just gettin' started." Last month Aldean revealed the album's first single "Burnin' It Down," a slow-jam love song that shows him playing around with, as he said above, "new sounds" and sonic "territory" that shows him exploring new song styles and arrangements. Aldean released a video for the single last week. The 15-song album was again helmed by Aldean's longtime producer Michael Knox and recorded with members of his touring band. "We've worked together long enough [that] he knows what I'm into and things I'm not," Aldean told Radio.com about his partnership with Knox. "We are not always on the same page, but more times than not. I think that's why it's always worked so well. It's cool to find somebody like that who shares the same vision-somebody you can trust." More details here.
According to Billboard, Green wrote on Twitter (though later deleted the tweets) that "People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!" He later added, "If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent," alluding to his own case. Green's accuser said she woke up next to Green in bed, but was unsure of how she got there. Green's lawyers argued that the two had "consensual relations" and since there was a lack of evidence he was not charged with rape. He was however sentenced to three years probation and 45 days of community service. After deleting the tweets, Green wrote, "I will not allow that negative energy to loiter on my time line u still got it so keep it! I'm deleting this too." Later, Green once again took to Twitter, this time to apologize. Read that here.
According to Billboard, the sexy "U Know" will be featured on Art Official Age which marks Prince's first solo album in four years. The track features Prince's sultry side as he tries to woo a lover. The second new track, "Whitecaps," will be on Plectrumelectrum which is the album by Prince's band 3rdEyeGirl. On this song, Prince takes the vocal backseat to let his band shine. Several songs Prince released in recent months will appear on the new albums: Plectrumelectrum will feature "FIXURLIFEUP" and "FUNKNROLL," while Art Official Age will also contain "FUNKNROLL" (no word yet on whether they are different versions) and "Breakfast Can Wait." Check the songs out here.
With plenty of banjo, foot stomping rhythms and his familiar voice, "Overrated" is an ode to the most important thing in life: love. "Baby if you're asking me, love is really all we need/Everything else is overratedWe're all running after something/But if it ain't love it's nothing," he sings. "Overrated" is one of 13 tracks on the release and was written by Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne and Rivers Rutherford. McGraw said when selecting songs for his album he listens as a fan first. "First and foremost, above anything else, I'm a fan and I'm a music fan," he said. "When I hear a demo of a song, or when I hear a song on the radio, I listen to it as a fan. As a kid listenin' to albums, when I grew up it was vinyl, you're listenin' to vinyl and you knew every crease in that album cover, down to the trademark symbol, you knew everything on it. You would listen to that music over and over and over again and you would try to pick what the next singles were gonna be. It's the same thing that I do with my records, or anybody else's records." "This decision has been made to reinforce and promote the safety of all Ultra Music Festival fans and to ensure the overall enjoyment of all future attendees. We are extremely grateful for all the support we have received from our younger fan base to date, and we encourage them to attend the festival once they reach the appropriate age. "Until then, our free YouTube stream, 'ULTRA LIVE' is available worldwide for everyone of all ages to enjoy and share in the Ultra experience." Former Miami police chief and Ultra's current festival security director Ray Martinez, voiced his support of the age limit. Read that here.
According to Pulse Radio, stage organizers were able to fill the vacated time slot with a surprise appearance from Diplo and Skrillex (AKA Jack U), who were already in the area with a show the next night at Camp Question Mark. While Skrillex fired up some tunes that placated the discriminating crowd, Diplo didn't fare so well when he cued up DJ Snake and Lil Jon's ubiquitous party hit, "Turn Down for What." The audience responded to the track with a chorus of boos, hastily sending the superstar DJs offstage to be replaced by German techno duo, Tale of Us. Diplo has given his own account of the events at Burning Man over the last week and claims that he and Skrillex were not booed off stage; rather, it was an "inside joke" that was in "good fun," rather than reports that the duo was kicked out due to playing DJ Snake's "Turn Down for What." In the video, titled The Music. Made in Tennessee, Jack White and Keith Urban are among the many musicians that lend video footage of themselves performing for the thirty second spot. Interestingly enough, neither White (Detroit) or Urban (Australia) actually hail from Tennessee, but maybe that's why they were chosen; each artist demonstrates the draw of the state for musicians, with cultural cornerstones Memphis and Nashville both hotbeds for musical activity. Also featured in the video is the late Johnny Cash, with country songwriter Rivers Rutherford providing voice-over for the spot. The song that plays throughout the ad is "Mission Bells" by Nashville indie rock band, The Apache Relay. Watch it here.
"I wanted to have control over every drumbeat, every lick," Brice previously said in a release. "It was a lot of really sitting down and thinking about every little piece that goes into a song." The result is a hybrid of fresh country sounds with a touch of digital flair - beats underlying banjos, pulses over top of piano." I Don't Dance, due out via Curb Records, showcases the emotional ballads Brice is known for like "I Don't Dance," "That Don't Sound Like You" and "No Better Than This," as well as plenty of drinking songs including "Drinking Class" and "Somebody's Been Drinking." More details and a link to the album stream here.
The video footage features, naturally, Kim Kardashian talking over some of the songs, but they're clear enough to hear. "Baby, you're awesome / Don't let nobody bring you down / You're so awesome," West sings through Auto-Tune on "Awesome," which he originally premiered live last year. The song is accompanied by piano. Meanwhile, the "Paris" remix appears to have been given a shot of grandiosity, the tempo slowed down slightly with strings and horns, plus a choir-like vocal. It's unknown if either will receive official releases - particularly "Awesome," since West is currently working on his next studio album, the followup to Yeezus. Listen here.
Directed by Donald Glover/Childish Gambino, the clip details just a few of the pressures Aiko faces in her complex life as a pop star. Cue angst shots of the singer alone, lit by flaring paparazzi bulbs. Next shot: Jhene in her living room, trying to write more syrupy, slinky ballads while her daughter (a cameo from her real daughter, Namiko) tugs on her blonde dreads. She briefly finds serenity before a panorama of full moons before we're back in the thick of it: dating. Oy. Jhene sits on a leather couch next to her beau, whose lost in the depths of his iPad - playing Candy Crush, presumably. Aiko is understandably salty; she shifts uncomfortably in her seat, a woman scorned. Watch it here.
As previously reported, Travis Barker makes a guest appearance on the pair's new album - and they'll be in good company. Also joining them are Beyonc producer BOOTS, Akinyele Back and Diane Coffee. As for the album artwork, it's a near-sketch-for-sketch continuation of their first album's cover. Only this time around, they opted for a red background and mummified hands. The pair will be on the road by the time their Oct. 28 release date rolls around. Check out a list of their upcoming shows here.
On Monday (Sept. 1), Chance posted a photo of him and his fellow Chicagoan backstage at Made in America Los Angeles. In the photo, both stare straight ahead, Chance squinting a little more than 'Ye, as if they practiced their pose. A hip-hop version of Blue Steel, one might say. In the caption on Instagram, Chance writes, "Anyone who knows me knows how big of a moment this was for me. I've been his biggest fan since 04 and I'm pretty sure I'm still his #1 fan." While Chance gives props to Jay Z for "hookin' up" the Made In America festival, he also gives a special shout out to another guy in his life. And no, it isn't God. "Thanks to Gizmo for all the good luck yesterday," he wrote about the Gremlins plush he's holding in the pic, adding the hashtag, #IMetKanye. See it here.
"Want Your Feeling" turns out to be the most upbeat single that Jessie Ware has revealed so far from her new album, which is due out in the U.S. on October 21st. The track is produced by James Ford, a former member of the dance group Simian who previously worked with Hynes on a short-lived project the latter joined, Test Icicles. Ford also produced all output from the Arctic Monkeys post 2007 and often tours with the group, playing keyboards. Check out the song here.
Partnering with IBM, Murphy will be creating an algorithm that translates between music and the information contained in the variety of potential match situations. Serves, points and faults become notes - Murphy plays the role of interface. Soon you will be able to hear this music stream alongside the matches in real time; for now, go on the US Open website and listen to music Murphy created from old matches. Watch a video in which Murphy explains just how he came up with the algorithm, and how he learned to work with code here.
"Midnight" came to life a few years ago in late fall, while I was staying at the Ace Hotel in NYC. I'd just checked into my room (room 1011 to be exact). I put my bags down and made a call to a good friend who lived in NYC. I remember for no reason that I could pinpoint, the conversation was tense at 'Hello.' I kept trying to clear the air but, my friend wouldn't bite. It was out of character for them. It was confusing for me. I'd driven into the city from Philly. It was late. I was exhausted and feeling impatient about the direction our talk was taking. The conversation was not going well. We ended the call with them saying words that really stung. I'd been pacing around the room while talking on the phone, but I had not been conscious of doing so. When the call ended I'd landed in the entrance of the doorway to the bathroom directly across from the mirror. My eyes fell onto a decal. It read, "Love is meant to make us glad." This decal by the way is on every bathroom mirror at The Ace. It was a miserable moment. I thought I'd lost one of my best friends. Then, as it mostly always happens, I heard lyrics and melody in my head at the same time. I stared at the decal, and sang the opening chorus and first and second verses of "Midnight". It was my way of processing that experience. The irony of moments like this is never lost on me. When something vivid and light rises out of ashes unexpectedly, I am always stunned. The visual was, me in a dark room except for the bathroom light, then me in the bathroom doorway as the words and melody to "Midnight" bounced off tile and tub. It was raw, but it had a lot of musicality. The chorus and verses were colorful, intentional, soulful, and whimsical. In juxtaposition, I was entirely gray. I was still holding my phone. I dialed my number, recorded the song into my voicemail and put it to sleep. Back in Philly several months later, I would sit and produce the song with MIDI keyboard, starting with the string arrangement, preliminary keys, lead and back up vocals. Singer-songwriter Naeemah Z. Maddox was also added into the back up vocal mix. My tracking engineer set a place holder with a basic electronic drum track and electronic bass track that would later be removed for live instruments and lush offerings, courtesy of a handful of elite Philly musicians including guitarist/producer Jake Morelli. Together, Jake and I flipped the song on it's side a couple few times, stripping it down, building it back up over the course of a year and hammering out what would become the final production. Oh, there's a happy ending. My good friend and I resolved our difference of opinion. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about Donn T right here!
