Day in Pop Report for 09/04/2014
With "My Everything" hitting the top spot on the chart, that gives Grande her second consecutive No. 1 album and she has also now scored two No. 1s in less than a year. Her previous album, "Yours Truly," hit the top of the Billboard chart last September and her new effort did the same after it sold 169,000 copies during its first week of release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Grande joins Susan Boyle and LeAnn Rimes to become the third female artist of the SoundScan era (which began in 1991), to have earned two No. 1 albums in the same year. Ariana shared her excitement with fans via Twitter. She tweeted, "No words!! thank you so much. so much love & appreciation. Kinda unbelievable & really does mean so much...thank you X a billion...love u. so grateful."
"Over the past couple of years," she says, "since Miley Cyrus took the stage 'twerking' at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, our students' dancing behavior has crossed the line of what we can condone as appropriate behavior at a school." "Twerking is dancing to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving a low squatting stance and thrusting movements," she explains. "Students do not face one another or remain with the same person for the length of the song. If you haven't seen twerking, I would encourage you to research this online." More here.

His response: "Someone at the Disney patent office fell asleep on that one." Now it seems that they've woken up. As Deadmau5 tweeted Tuesday (Sept. 2), "landed home to some interesting news: looks like Disney officially just filed in opposition of my trademark lawyer up mickey." TMZ is reporting that Disney filed documents Tuesday claiming that Deadmau5's logo/helmet is too close to its iconic Mickey Mouse ears. The site reports that Deadmau5 applied for a patent on through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last year, and that his lawyer Dina LaPolt told them that he has already trademarked his logo in 30 other countries. here.
Entertainment Weekly reports that the TBS reality show about Green will no longer be a part of the network's schedule. The show was canceled after just one season after premiering in June. A source confirmed to EW that the reason for the cancellation was poor ratings, though some are claiming the timing suggests that Green's Twitter comments also played a role in some capacity. Green came under fire after tweeting his thoughts on consent and sex after pleading no contest to giving a woman Ecstasy in 2012. The woman claimed she woke up in bed next to Green with no memory of how she got there. More details here.
Legendary country music star Dwight Yoakam will be joining Church as a special guest for the entire leg and additional support at various stops on the tour will come from Brothers Osborne, Brandy Clark, and Halestorm. Church will be kicking off the tour on September 11th in Bossier City, LA at CenturyLink Center and wrapping up the 30+ city tour leg on December 13th in Birmingham, AL at the BJCC Arena. Fans will also be able to catch Eric Church on television on October 15th when he will perform as the music guest on that night's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. See the tour dates here.
The 25-date tour of the U.S. and Canada is scheduled to kick off on October 30th in Toronto, ON at Massey Hall and will conclude on December 6th in Los Angeles, CA at the Pantages Theatre. Hynde's solo album, Stockholm, was released in June of this year and was the very first album that she has released under her own name. It included the AAA Top 20 single "Dark Sunglasses." According to Hynde's camp the tour will include the very first live performances of tracks from Stockholm and will also classic songs from The Pretenders' catalog. See the tour dates here.
"I think if it were up to Dan and I, and we didn't have to consider the fact that we need to complete the full tour circuit, we'd probably be back in the studio in January," the drummer told Billboard. Carney added that he and Auerbach, more than anything, love recording. They actually created the Black Keys to make records, not play live. "We started the band because we wanted to make albums," he explained. "We wanted to make one record, and then we found out we had to tour. We didn't play our first show 'til after our first record was recorded, so it's always been about making records, and it's been a process in growing to become good performers." The Black Keys will be on the road again this fall. Details here.
Local hero Win Butler, aka Arcade Fire's frontman, made a surprise appearance in the middle of the band's indie hit song "Seasons (Waiting on You)." Perhaps unsurprisingly, Butler nailed Herring's raspy register in the track. Butler's appearance also gave Herring the chance to better show off his famed Letterman moves before the pair joined in on the chorus. The whole duet makes you wonder how and when the started talking. Presumably the pair became friends before Arcade Fire asked Future Islands to open for them at a show in Hyde Park, London, this past July. It also makes you wonder if their friendship will take the form of a recorded collaboration sometime soon, even though they're on different labels with Arcade Fire on Merge and Future Islands signed to 4AD. Watch the performance here.
Vince Gill, Graham Nash and Emmylou Harris are among the artists taking part in the performance, which will be held Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the State Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. Don Everly will be on hand to accept the Music Masters honor on behalf of the Everly Brothers; his brother, Phil, died earlier this year. Shelby Lynne, Peter Asher and the Secret Sisters are also among the guests scheduled to appear at the ceremony, with more to be announced closer to the actual Music Masters date. Rodney Crowell will act as the musical director for the event, while guitarist Albert Lee, who was the musical director for the duo's 1983 reunion concert, will perform as part of the house band. More details here.
Over Flying Lotus' funky bass-driven beat, Lamar reminisces about his wonder years and no, he's not talking about Fred Savage. "You gonna hate me when I'm gone," he says, before making it clear no one's gonna catch him though. Recently Flying Lotus (aka Steven Ellison) implied that Lamar left him high and dry when it comes to his rap alter-ego, Captain Murphy, saying, "I went on tour and he recorded a bunch of my songs. I don't know if he's gonna use them or not, but he recorded a bunch of stuff, which is why there's no Captain Murphy album out yet. He took all my beats! More here.
In the video about an acute case of agoraphobia, the camera follow a trail of pills and a random assortment of items emblazoned with the songs lyrics - a movie propmaster's nightmare. The camera pans the surfaces of an apartment cluttered with what appears to be months of stuff piled up, left by someone with the inability to leave. "Agora" follows on the Bear Hands' success with "Giants," the first single from the band's sophomore album Distraction. Watch the video here.
Ultimately it didn't working out for "Dancing" this season, but Juan is returning to TV in , VH1's "Couples Therapy" with his girlfriend from "The Bachelor," Nikki Ferrell. Juan saying the decision to join the show was not easy, "I have and issue and she have an issue that if we were dating already why not take the chance and get some therapy and see an expert." The two happy they did, Juan saying if they hadn't they "probably would have killed each other two weeks later." The issues they worked on, communication, how Juan should talk to his daughter about Nikki and living apart Juan is living in Miami, Nikki in Kansas City still where she is a nurse. Other issues coming out as well, one being Juan Pablo not telling Nikki he loves her back which you can see in a promo for the show, "It's part of the processPart of the things I thought we were ok but they were not ok with her." Juan not saying if he does say I love you now, only saying you have to watch the show to see. More here.
The scratchy strummer follows up the album's lead single "Rapt" with an equally stripped down sound. On it, Karen O gives insight into the album's title, singing about unrequited love: "I really need my fix cuz you got me so sick / I know / That I'm burning for you." It's yet another reminder that Karen O's greatest power as a songwriter is in creating pinpricking emotional intensity within a mere few verses - a strength she showed off in "The Moon Song," written for Spike Jonze's Her, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song this year. Listen to the new track here.
Lamar compliments Jeezy's quasi-religious fervor with a bout of typically tricky wordplay. He makes several prescient references to other artist's work - most notably Kanye West and Usher, who he references in one tongue-tying sequence. K.Dot references Mr. Wests "All Falls Down" when he rhymes, "I swear the lord is my shepherd, I'm 'bout to go cop a Lexus / I'm 'bout to go f*** Alexis, take this and flood my Rolexes." Alexis, of course, is Kanye's witty name for the daughter of a shopaholic. Then Kendrick goes R&B: "I protect mine on my mom and 'ems, these are my Usher confessions/Let it burn." Take a listen here.
And guess what? It deserves it. Drake has an unerring ear for beats - "Whatcha Say" slinks and creeps, with a clattering, minor-key production that doesn't leave much room for standing still. Drake's Young Money label mate Tyga also appears, but, of course, it's Drizzy who steals the show: "Look your getting all your friends, and your getting in the car, and your coming to the house, are we clear right now, ha?" Listen to the track here.
Also, we know someone up there wants him to succeed. That someone gave this track to Pusha T, who unloads a blistering (though rather brief) verse over glowing synths. He eulogizes a failed relationship in grandiose terms: "hoping, honest, I resist / oceans, timeless, the abyss." How'd this unlikely collaboration end up happening? Here's what O.W.S. had to say on the subject, via Jay Z's Life + Times blog: "It's not everyday you get the rapper with the number one hip-hop album of last year wanting to feature on your record; but as soon as King Push heard 'Waterline' he wanted to jump on it," he said. More here.
Game absolutely slathers his voice in Auto-Tune, sounding more like an airplane taking off than a human being. He slips in and out of Makonnen's flow, warbling off on tangents about talking to Drake and "music going up on a tuesday." The spare, rosy-hued production leaves more than enough room for dramatic reinterpretations of the original; we can't wait to see who else tries their hand. In the meantime, Game's here to show the world how it's done. This track comes the Los Angeles Leakers Leaks of the Industry '14 tape, which they will release on Sept. 8. Meanwhile, the rapper also released the tracklist for new album Year of the Wolf, out Oct. 14. Check it out here.
