Day in Pop Report for 09/10/2014
Without naming names, Swift went on to explain that she and this person had been longtime frenemies - "For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, 'Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'" - until this person acted against her, apparently trying to hire all of Swift's staff from under her and sabotage her arena tour. "She did something so horrible," Swift says. "I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I'm surprisingly non-confrontational - you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It's awkward, and I don't like it." Of course, once the story broke, Swift's obsessive fans did some digging and found that a few of her dancers did go over to Perry's team a few years back. There's also the fact that the two have shared boyfriend John Mayer, which would imaginably add fuel to fire. Read more details here.
Minaj's announcement came after a performance at Fashion Rocks in New York, where she presented viewers with The Pinkprint's current single, "Anaconda." "Anaconda" was preceded by "Pills N Potions," which was less of a success than the current single, which has peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 - particularly on the strength of its music video, which has scored millions of hits and multiple parodies. Donald also revealing Joan's role on the upcoming season of "The Celebrity Apprentice." He explained, "We just finished shooting Season 14, and Joan is a big part of two of the episodes. I mean a big part, and she was fantastic. "Joan worked so hard, she studied, she wanted to know all about the contestants that were remaining, what were their good points, their bad points. Joan was a hard worker I think people are going to get a big kick, she was terrific." As for Joan's funeral, Donald said, "The service was beautiful, it was big, it was funny, you never see funerals that are funny, but she would have wanted that way. Howard Stern was fantastic." "The Big Revival" is the newest glimpse we've gotten into Chesney's forthcoming album, also titled The Big Revival and due out on September 23rd. It follows the single "American Kids" and "Flora-Bama." In his Cover Story interview with Radio.com, Chesney spoke at length about his new album, making it clear that while it would be right up the alley of the No Shoes Nation, they can also expect some mind-expanding. "This album ain't about a party," Chesney says. "It's about living with passion, about confidence, about walking into a room full of people and smiling and meaning it. Having the courage to hear this voice in your head and follow it, maybe for the first time in your life. It's about taking your life and living it to the fullest." Listen to the new track here.
But the Hollywood Reporter reports that at a press conference that took place shortly after Gaga landed Monday night (Sept. 8), she was asked if she'd be wearing any revealing outfits onstage. "No, I will not be," she said. "I respect the culture here, and this show will be appropriate for all the fans here in Dubai." She continued: "I know there are some artists that are very strict about their policies of adhering to their art and not compromising, but I actually think it's important to respect other cultures and not force them to adhere to the beliefs of your own country. In fact, I think it's a better way to connect with the people and to connect a message." Gaga's concert at Dubai's Meydan Racecourse on Wednesday is her first performance in the United Arab Emirates. And while she's a huge draw here in the U.S., the local media have been reporting that only half of the possible tickets have been bought. Read more details here.
Well, Pizza Hut did not think this would be enough, and sought the help of country superstar and The Voice host Blake Shelton for their B&CSCP media blitz. The concept is simple: get the six-foot-five Shelton pretend to be a regular Pizza Hut employee named "Stephen," have a manager (obviously out of his depth when it comes to acting) vouch for him, watch customers not buy it for second and all laugh together while stuffing our face with a delicious treat. God bless America! Bacon & Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza is likely available at Pizza Hut now. Blake Shelton is probably not. Watch the ad here.
Already, there are promos online for the iPhone 6 - and the company recruited some big names to help sell them. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake star in the ads for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus - well, sort of. You won't see their faces in the new ad, but you'll hear their voices coming out of your TV over the next few months. The singer and the late night host sing along to George Strauss' "Also Sprauch Zarathustra," brought to light in a big way in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, as they rise and lower the iPhones with their hands in the camera view. Along the way, many of the phones' new features are showcased. Watch the ad here.
The singer released an official remix today (Sept. 9) of new single "I'm Not the Only One" featuring A$AP Rocky on his Soundcloud account. Rocky pops up at the beginning of the tune, shooting a subdued line over the song's piano-driven, mid-tempo beat before Smith jumps in for the first verse. But the few seconds of Rocky to start the track isn't all you'll get of him - he appears a little after the two-minute mark to contribute a full verse of his own. "We're all guilty of the same crime / If you ask me, I might have had a couple women at the same time," he raps, contributing to the song's references to a cheating beau. "I'm Not the Only One" is the second U.S. single off Smith's In the Lonely Hour. Check out the remix here.
The pair breaks into an evocative dance within the house, moving like they are trying to conjure mysterious forces to bring rain or something, like something you'd see on HBO's True Blood. This dark magic is underscored by the introduction of a wardrobe change of black leather and some rather large snakes. The clip serves to highlight Womack's lyrics, which proclaim "if I ever get to heaven it's a doggone shame." "Getting people to talk about things, issues and what they believe is the best thing music can do," Womack told Rolling Stone about the Roger Pistole-directed clip. Seemingly, the video and song accomplish just this goal. "The Way I'm Livin'" is the title track from Womack's upcoming album, her first in seven years, scheduled for release due on September 23. Watch the video here.
The soft ballad recalls previous Lady Antebellum hits like "Just a Kiss" and "Dancin' Away with My Heart," showcasing Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley's alternating verses and spot-on harmonies. "I've never known another love timeless and true / But I did with you," they sing on the chorus. The song is from the upcoming Nicolas Sparks film The Best of Me, staring James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan. The romantic movie is based off Sparks' novel, which follows two high school sweethearts who later reunite after years of losing touch. "I Did With You" was written by Lady Antebellum's Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott and Monty Powell. Listen to the new song here.
"It's another journey I'm about to take to finish another album, no telling when I'll finish it, but my plans is for it to drop it next year," he said. "I'm not promoting it right now, I'm still on my Oxymoron wave, but I'm definitely working on my second album." But in the wavy world of the TDE rapper, nothing is set in stone. "I just started yesterday, so I really don't know," he said. "I mean, I know what I wanna do, but things change. I knew what I wanted to do with Oxymoron in 2012 but I didn't drop it til 2014." Read more details here.
"Five years ago we met here so I wanted to come full circle and ask you if you will marry me," Schroeder said to a very surprised Lloyd. While she wasn't sure if this was real life or TV, once her puppy and family came out to congratulate the newly engaged pair, things started to sink in. "This is for real," she said. "This is the house that brought us together. We met and became best friends. Jeff completely caught me off guard." After the many congratulations, country artist Brett Eldredge came out as the final surprise to sing his new single, the very appropriate "Mean to Me." In an interview with Radio.com, Eldredge shared the story behind the song. "'Mean To Me' is very much a one-on-one love, romantic song that's telling somebody else how much they mean to you," he told Radio.com last year during his album release week. "I wanted to write a song telling someone, 'If I could mean half as much as these things, half as much as you mean to me, then that would be amazing.'" Watch the performance here.
She'll team up with her Capitol Records label mates, Sam Smith and Emeli Sande, and with the DJ duo Disclosure. Blige has collaborated previously with Smith on his track "Stay With Me" and made a guest appearance on Disclosure's "F For You" remix and video. As reported before, Blige will work with producer Naughty Boy, with songwriters Sam Romans (Naughty Boy's "Home"), Jimmy Napes (Sam Smith's "Stay With Me") and Eg White (Adele, Florence & the Machine) joining in the fun. "It's all about the London music scene and I'm so excited to have been part of it, to record my album," says Blige in a press release. "The songs are fun, therapeutic and soulful. This is a beautiful change for me and I'm proud of what we have done here." Read more details here.
London's new track, "Can't Stop," off his upcoming album Vibes (out Oct. 28) isn't just produced by Yeezy, but features a verse from 'Ye that has him returning to his College Dropout roots. On the stuttering verse, Kanye keeps things conversational letting us know that he's "hotter than Arizone, fresher than aerosol," and unless "your money talking keep your mouth closed." Ending it all by saying, "if this party ain't got hoes, my intro my outro." Hear a snippet of the track featuring Kanye's verse here.
Over a clattering, tick-tocking beat from DirtyVans Keef waxes poetic about his favorite number: "Just bought a Bimmer / I'mma set it on some 24s / Swish, Kobe Bryant, 24 / For a verse, I didn't want 20 / I want 24." ManeMane features, but it's Keef time all the way. He's as ebullient and lowbrow as ever, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Bang 3, which is set to feature Lil B and A$AP Rocky, is slated for release in October. Listen to the new song here.
The song is an ode to the enigmatic "shawty", the subject of so many songs over the years. This time around she's a captivating, knowing temptress: "She loves the attention that she get when she move / Showin' out with her homegirls / Hypnotizing all the dudes," he sings, flanked by Juicy J. Ne-Yo is gearing up for the release of his album Non-Fiction early in 2015. He will kick off support for it with his 11-city Live in Concert tour, starting on Oct. 12 in San Francisco. Listen to the new song here.
The MCs know what to do with it, though. Danny shrieks like a banshee, Riff Raff squawks about "trapping in the forest/hansel and gretel" and tank-sized Houston MC Beatking demolishes everything in his path. From Beatking's low registers to Danny's piercing high notes, they cover just about the entire spectrum of the human voice. You may not quite yet be familiar with Beatking, but rest assured you will be soon; he's had the South on lock for years, with regional hits like "Throw Dat Ahh" and "5 Years." On Sept. 30, he's dropping Underground Cassette Tape Music with the legendary Gangsta Boo of Three Six Mafia. Check out the track here.
Nick & Knight stopped by Radio.com during record release week to discuss their new album, the difficulties being a celebrity can bring and why they prefer to be called a "man band." During the interview, Knight explained that he and Carter floated the idea of joining forces during their NKOTBSB joint tour in the summer of 2011. "We both figured it would be cool if we teamed up and did a tour," Knight told Radio.com, explaining how their fan base melded together when they did the NKOTBSB tour. "We figured to do something new and do a new twist for the fans, it would be cool if we did an album together. We had the same musical taste and styles and it made a lot of sense." For their debut duo album, Nick & Knight, both agreed they didn't want to make a big, pop-produced album. Instead, they regard the record as more of an indie release. "We just let ourselves be free. It's more of a broken down, rhythmic sexy vibe," Knight said. The album blends multiple genres, which showcases both Carter and Knight exchanging verses. While the pop songs are there, so are the ballads. Surprisingly, some songs even evoke a hint of R&B, which can be heard on tracks like "Paper." The song, which details finding a real true love and not someone who cares about celebrity, hits home all too well for Carter and Knight. "He just got married and it personifies his relationship," Knight explained. "Even his reality show [I Heart Nick Carter which airs Sept. 10 on VH1] shows what him and his wife go through with him being a celebrity. 'Paper' is, that's what we need. Someone who will love us for us." Nick & Knight also opened up about the term "boy band" and how they never grew fond of the description, but now accept it. "When I came out with a solo album in 1999 I would always get asked, 'How does it feel to be from a boy band?' I would always get defensive and upset," Knight said. "Boy band, the term wasn't used until around that time. I was a little defensive back then. Now, it's just like whatever. That's who we are, that's what we are it's all good. Yes we are now in man bands, which is a little better. We're men." Read the rest here.
Well, you are in luck, because that is exactly what happened on today's Ellen, which all served as a promo for Minaj's scheduled appearance on today's (Sept. 10) show. Clearly Ellen can't wait to hang with the rap superstar and now likely you will be setting your DVRs to see what other kind of hilarious antics will ensue. For now, check out the video here.
This is one of Pablo's first interviews since being released this summer from a prison stint on illegal weapons charges. He expects to have an album out next year. "Raise Up" is pure love for North Carolina. Do you ever have to buy your own drinks when you're in your home state? No, I don't. But it's a respect thing. People give me drinks all day long but at the end of the day, I have a job to do. A lot of times society has it where people with money don't have to pay for things. And people that don't have money, they don't get nothing. I like to keep it humble. Your drinks will always be. What did it take to write the perfect North Carolina anthem? It's like aggressive but positive. It takeshumble yourself and to think about what you're great for. And to not forget where you came from. Try to make sure that people know no matter where you come from, you tried to make something of yourself. You take all that, mix it up and that's what you got. Did you have the idea for that song already or did you write it entirely to Timbaland's beat? Tim gave me the beat, and it took me almost two weeks to write that record. For one, I'm a perfectionist. I second-guess myself; I'm my worst critic. That's one of the first tracks that Timbaland had ever gave me, and I wanted to prove myself worthy. I studied and studied. I think that's where a lot of artists go wrong, that they can take a track and just do something to it. When you marry a beat, it's just like having a wife, you have to be very attentive to get something out of it. You're attentive to your wife, she'll be the best wife ever. If you're attentive to the track, you know, the track will be your best work ever. Check out the full interview here.
