Day in Pop Report for 09/12/2014
But concertgoers didn't go home feeling jilted; West still performed. Australia's Woman's Day reports the rapper was rushed to the hospital with a migraine and was given an MRI. Whatever the issue, it apparently was not too serious, as a Live Nation spokeswoman confirmed to the website that his concert at Rod Laver Arena went on as scheduled. Read more here.
On a radio show in Australia (via Yahoo Australia), Grande addressed claims that at a recent photo shoot Down Under she stormed out after being photographed from the wrong side. She says the photographer is spreading lies and "there's no record to set straight." "It was just a photographer or something who got mad at me because I left to change my outfit mid-photoshoot because I didn't like my top and I was like 'Oh I'll be right back.' And then I came back and he had left and I was like 'Oh s-t,'" she says. "He's now . . . said all these ridiculous untrue things about me and I'm just like, you know what, that's not real, that's nonsense, my fans know who I am, my family knows who I am, my friends know who I am and that's all that matters." Her manager Scooter Braun, who also manages Justin Bieber and is used to having to defend his client, came out in support of Grande, tweeting that the star "is kind, caring, and more than anything she is a great human being. Some people make up rumors for a living . . . so . . . saying things about Ari comes with her now being a big star." He had more to say here.
The offender was a video Apple had put together called "Perspective" that not only uses the same filming method - consisting of one long-shot that hinges on a trompe l'oeil effect - but also used the same exact production company and director. Of course, it could be just a coincidence that Apple used a similar visual trick and the same personnel to produce it, but OK Go claim they met with Apple last April to pitch the idea as a possible collaboration - only Apple declined. So the band decided to put together the video on their own, and have since racked up 10.5 million views. In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, OK Go's manager Andy Gershon said, "The videos speak for themselves, and you can draw your own conclusions," before adding that the band is exploring legal options. Now, Iggy Azalea is the latest star to potentially have her private life non-consensually broadcast for the world to see. According to a press release sent out by Vivid Entertainment - the adult company that released the film that made Kim Kardashian a household name - a video featuring the Australian rapper is currently being shopped around. The company's founder/co-chairman Steven Hirsch claims that he has been shown "teaser" images of the tape and it confirms that "Iggy is definitely the hottest female rapper today." More details here.
According to Deadline, others involved in the project include Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, Cedric The Entertainer, J.B. Smoove, Sherri Shepherd, Anders Holm, Romany Malco, Leslie Jones, Michael Che,and Jay Pharoah - who goofed on West while playing him at this year's MTV VMAs. This news lines up with rumors that West was looking to get back into film, after having a small role in Anchorman 2. It also makes more sense, given that his acting has received less than favorable reviews and reportedly cost him a role in Will Ferrell's 2008 film Semi-Pro. More details here.
The song has leaked online ahead of its release. The two singers have penned an ode to the late night dilemma of trying to formulate an appeal for companionship without expressing blatant thirst: "I'm blowing up your line / I got you on my mind / And the truth is hard to find / so I'll be drunk texting, drunk texting, drunk texting you." More including a link to the leak here.
The legally troubled/aggressive DJ, who recently traded in his Nyan Cat-covered "Purrari," now is driving the McLaren and took to Uber in Toronto to break in his new ride, Consequence of Sound reports. This shouldn't have been a complete surprise, as Deadmau5 tweeted about the Uber plan ahead of time. It is just surprising that he was the least bit serious. Check out the evidence via Twitter that he took this dude named Tucker to Chipotle here.
The concert film, originally released in 1995, was shot over two nights of performances at Sheffield's City Hall and Blackpool's Winter Gardens on the tour supporting his album Vauxhall & I by director James O'Brien and was previously only available on VHS as a limited collector's edition item. This release makes it available on DVD for the first time. Check out the full tracklisting for Introducing Morrissey and an online video preview that features the performance of "Jack The Ripper" from the DVD release here.
Additional artists so far announced for the lineup include Easton Corbin, Joe Diffie and LoCash Cowboys. The festival will run from March 20-22 in Melbourne, just outside Orlando. Festivalgoers can camp onsite or find their own lodging nearby. Both single day tickets or weekend ticket packages are available for purchase. "Last year we hosted visitors from 38 states, 10 countries and just about every county in Florida," festival executive producer Gary McCann states in a press release. "Wickham Park transforms into a festival paradise with several lakes, towering palms, large campsites and a spacious concert bowl area with great sight lines. We are all in for a real treat." More details here.
With the soundtrack to Journey's "Faithfully," each person on tour lip syncs to the camera in a unique way. Whether they're rocking out with mops as pretend guitars, adopting an appropriate hair metal wig or waving their lighter's in the air, they get their point across. Country fans, Urban and crew will be forever yours, faithfully. "From Gilford, NH all the way to Marysville, CAThanks for "Rais'n Em Up" coast to coast!" the video says at its close. Artists including Miranda Lambert and Dustin Lynch have raved about Urban's live show, saying how he has inspired them as artists. Watch the video here.
Madonna is not one of these people - or, at least, she hasn't previously been. Now, with video surfacing of Madge spinning at a Jeremy Scott after-party during New York Fashion Week, which also featured DJ sets from her buddies Diplo and Skrillex, Madonna DJ sets could be the next craze hitting bougie clubs internationally. Hard to say how good she is from the video. Skrillex clearly is the hardest worker of the bunch in this clip, so if you are booking for your next celebrity bash, you might want to stick with the pros. Watch the video here.
According to Rolling Stone Country, Gill receives the award thanks to his 35-year career in country, which includes 20 GRAMMY awards and 26 million album sales. Well known for his expertise as a musician and country singer and songwriter, this isn't the first time the hall of famer has been recognized. Earlier this year, he earned a Career Achievement Award from Country Radio Broadcasters. Gill also regularly lends his support to up-and-coming artists. He produced Ashley Monroe's Like a Rose and has appeared on albums by Brandy Clark and Charlie Worsham. Read more here.
After teasing the title track Wednesday, when he announced his comeback, Rice has now shared "My Favourite Faded Fantasy" in full. Like many of his solo songs, it's a slow-building ballad where Rice's lyrics trickle out like he's telling secrets into your ear - especially with the lines, "You could be my poison, my cross, my razor blade / I could love you more than life if I wasn't so afraid / What it all could be." The homespun love song takes a left-of-center turn near the end ending with a bang. Zane Lowe will premiere of the official single, "I Don't Want to Change You," on Sept. 23 on BBC Radio. Check out the new song here.
"The collection is really inspired by music festivals, beach parties, Burning Man and [being] outdoors. No roof over it, a party outdoors - music and youth culture," Scott told MTV. "I saw what Miley was making when I went over to her house and I was like, 'Oh my god! This is exactly like my collection.'" The singer admitted to Elle that she gets a lot of the materials for her creations, which include jewelry and headpieces, at the Dollar Store. "I'm really good at being incognito," Cyrus said. "I swear, I've walked through New York City and nobody's noticed. And I go to the Dollar Store all the time." More including a photo here.
"Real Deal" is a sensual strip club anthem, with a synth line that demands placement in a grimy after-hours setting. Tyga's famous for taking his videos to the next level - "Make It Nasty" is a particularly NSFW example - and this is no exception. When he goes out, he goes out. Executive produced by Worldstar's founder Q, the "Real Deal" video contains substantial quantities of cash and butts, with Tyga enjoying himself right in the middle. He even rocks a blindfold at one point, presumably allowing him to devote the largest possible percentage of his mind to the money. Watch the video, which may be NSFW in some workplaces here.
On Aug. 2 the group announced the track list of a new project, J.E. Heartbreak 2 - and now we finally have the first taste of the project. "Ready" finds the quartet still going strong and sticking to their guns, lyrically: "Baby starting here today / I'm changing all my ways / I'm racing fast-forward / To your love." Jagged Edge songs are usually about either breaking up or settling down. Two decades into their career and they've settled firmly on the latter. They're convincing, too. "Ready" is vintage Edge, voices swirling and harmonizing like honey mixed with syrup. Check out the song here.
The visual, directed by award-winning duo Tell No One, features Jessie posing on a natural history museum-esque tableau, singing her heart out while lights pulse around her. "When I found out Tell No One were interested in directing 'Say You Love Me,' I was so confident they would deliver something visually beautiful and provocative," Ware said in a release about the song. "They are such talents and I have been a fan of their work for a while. I was an absolute pleasure to work with them on this. It was probably the most technically challenging thing I have worked on, but for them, it looked like a walk in the park. They have such confidence in what they do, it was inspiring to watch." Watch it here.
When you are watching yourself in a dream there comes that moment when you try to tell yourself what to do, try to help yourself. But when you realize you are stuck, you become anxious, nervous, and trapped. I found myself with this feeling while isolated in my room during Hurricane Sandy looking out at an empty city. I sat watching the strange winds, the deep grey sky, and the rain tumbling down while secluded quietly inside. This is when the inner storm came to life. "Blue Tempest" is this storm within a storm. At first you are watching this physical, natural calamity take place, but once you are alone for so long, your mind starts spinning; that feeling of being held captive and stuck releases your subconscious. With that come fears and anxieties and you begin to fight with yourself, one side is struggling to keep you free and the other is holding you captive. Even with this inner fight there is a sense of revelation. Amidst the tumult and brutality of a hurricane there is a meditative surrealism and calmness. Floating through that calmness a kind of natural balance is reached as the storm reminds us that we are inconsequential to nature happening and that our own fears and anxieties are inconsequential to us. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the group right here!
