tour (in lieu of Lollapalooza), the seminal New York art-rockers are venturing
out for a few more shows in support of Sonic Nurse-- including one show
with renowned torch vamp PJ Harvey (who, awesomely, was spotted by a Spin

tour commences tonight in-- lucky guess!-- New York City, where they'll
be rocking the previously-reported-upon Johnny Ramone benefit. [see full

UK P2P Suits
Aversion reports: Following the footsteps
of its American counterpart, Britain's British Phonographic Industry announced
it was bringing suit to 28 file-swappers.
The movement was the first time British
officials targeted peer-to-peer users. The BPI added teeth to its recent
claims that British cyber-pirates would face the same sort of justice imposed
by the Recording Industry Association of America, dropping a list of 28
names of users of the KaZaA, Grokster, Imesh, Bearshare and WinMX peer-to-peer
networks. No word on what sort of penalties the defendants, users recognized
by the BPI as "major uploaders," will face in court was announced. [see

candidly about the current state of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, their
split with Virgin records and how he Peter will move forward alone.

on the forthcoming record.
While the record is nearing completion

Queen Latifah Talks Rasism
on 60 Minutes
press release (CBS News) reports: She's
a star of music, movies and television, but that doesn't shield her from
the same racism that hurts other African Americans, says Queen Latifah.
The queen of hip hop speaks candidly to Bob Simon in an interview to be
broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Oct. 10 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS
Television Network.
Vying for a taxi is one place the racism
comes out, says Latifah. "Every time I try to flag down a cab and it goes
past me and picks up that white lady instead of me, that's racism," she
tells Simon. "I hate it."
Taxi drivers who see only the color of
her skin aren't the only ones who slight her; employees in stores can be
worse, even stereotyping her as a potential shoplifter. "I'm nobody until
you see that credit card…with that name on it," complains Latifah, "Or
until the person next to you says, 'Do you know who that is? It's Queen
Latifah.' Oh, now I'm somebody. Now, you going to stop following me around
this damn store?"[see full story for more]- Click

Get
Your Own Hits
[It's Friday and Scott Slapp has his hand
out and is ready to go to town on a few people with a new slapp. This time
around Scott takes on another recent trend in entertainment (and a few
related topics). Below is the first part, but be sure to click the full
story link to get the full slapp!]
This week I have to get something off my
chest. I could have selected another topic to piss off bisexual pedophiles
and ranted on and on but I've seen another resent trend that has really
gotten under my skin.
What is up with this trend of bands throwing
new cover tunes on their greatest hits cds? We are seeing this more and
more lately with "best of" cds from The Offspring, Marilyn Manson, Korn…
just to name a few. This new bright idea of marketing genius deserves a
slapp.
If you don't have enough hits of your own,
then you shouldn't be putting out a greatest hits CD. That goes double
for artists that count covers as their biggest hits. Do we really need
a Limp Bizkit greatest hits CD? Should "Nookie" be held up as a shining
example of songwriting? The lack of self-made hits may be one reason that
this trend has popped up.
Another is the selling point argument.
They have to put something extra on there to attract their core fanbase
who already own the songs from the CD catalog. I like the old trend of
putting on a couple rarities, b-sides or even new songs. Those make the
CD more attractive but to put out a greatest hits CD and put other people's
hits on it as a selling point just rubs me the wrong way. In most cases,
good songs from the band's past releases are ignored in favor of these
cover tunes.
I think this trend really demonstrates
the decline of music standards over the past few years. Think about it.
Are they using someone else's hit to "cover-up" their lack of songwriting
ability? This isn't just seen on greatest hits CDs. Some questionable artists
have actually used other people's hits on their debut albums as singles
to break out. Alien Ant Farm and Limp Bizkit are prime examples. Could
Fred Durst have made it without using "Faith" to get peoples attention?
Would we even know the name Alien Ant Farm if they hadn't covered "Smooth
Criminal"?

of this slapp!] - Click
