Rant:
Jive 8 |
antiGUY reports: Forget Africa, I'm dirt poor
and ran up my credit card debt, why don't we hold a concert so that people
will pressure my credit card companies to forgive the money I owe them?
Think it will work? I don't either but that's the basic premise of Live
8.
"We don't want your money, we want you!"
Sounds good but it's kind of counter productive. They should have gone
for the money because at the end of the day if Live 8 succeeds, the people
will be stuck paying for it anyway. Don't get me wrong, what's going on
in Africa is nothing short of tragic and they need all the help they can
get but staging a global concert with the aim of putting pressure on the
leaders of the free world to help is on the far side of naïve. Bono
does far more on his own with his activism and by meeting with world leaders
and discussing the issue and he doesn't need a media event to help him
in that goal.
If these celebs really care about third-world
poverty, I have a better solution than getting free PR from a "benefit"
concert that when you look at it benefits the stars and the media companies
that broadcast it more than the people they are trying to help. I propose
that all of these rock stars, actors etc that care so deeply about this
issue set aside 20% of their income to help pay off third-world debt. It
wouldn't solve the problem but it would be far more effective than espousing
platitudes at Live 8.

Vandross died Friday afternoon at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison,
N.J. The 54 year old singer suffered a stroke two years ago that he never

The statement did not specify a cause of
death but did say that the eight time Grammy award winning singer "had
a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical
support team."
Vandross was the most recognizable romantic
soul singers of the 80s with major success in the R&B market. He hit
the pop mainstream in 1989 with the song "Here and Now," which broke the

Maiden
Benefit |
Blabbermouth reports: In 2002, the members
of IRON MAIDEN were shocked to learn that their former drummer, Clive Burr,
was suffering from MS. They played three nights in March at Brixton Academy
in his honour, donating the £250,000-plus profits from the concerts
and merchandising into a newly formed Clive Burr Multiple Sclerosis Trust
Fund. The fund also received generous donations from the record company
EMI and publisher BMG Music from the commercial single releases of "Run
to the Hills" and "Number of The Beast" (which leapt into the U.K. charts
at No 3 earlier this year). There were kind donations from all over the
world of heavy metal, and tremendous support from the fans through numerous
fund raising initiatives and very generous individual contributions.
The Clive Burr MS Fund needs replenishing
if it is to continue to ease and improve the quality of Clive's life, and
others'. To help do this, IRON MAIDEN will stage a very special benefit
performance at Hammersmith Odeon on Friday, September 2. The show, featuring
songs from their first four albums ("Iron Maiden", "Killers", "The Number
of the Beast" and "Piece of Mind"), will by then have toured Europe and
North America playing to almost one million delighted fans and this will
be the final date of the tour and the very last time some of the songs
in the set will played live by the band. [see full story for a lot more

Chevelle
Bassist Speaks Out |
IAYM reports: In response to the recent statement
issued by Chevelle with regards to bassist Joe Loeffler sitting out of
their upcoming run with Taproot and 30 Seconds To Mars, the musician has
reportedly issued his own take on the decision via the group's message
board which tells rather a different story:
"First off, very typical. This is exactly
what I expected from them. Try and make it look like I didn't want to be
in the band. I was fired plain and simple; in fact there wasn't even a
discussion about it they just dropped it on me. I told them I would never
quit and they would have to fire me. They were trying to get me to quit
and told my managers that I did. I called sam and said "why are you doing
this?" and he said we don't want you to come back. I said I will not quit.
The next day pete called for the first time and said "did (our managers)
call you and tell you your out?" I said "no, were they supposed to?" he
eventually said in that short conversation "your fired". [see full story

Stutterfly
86ed? |
antiMusic reports: An eye witness has informed
antiMusic that Stutterfly ran into a bit of problem at an Orange County
hotel over the holiday weekend. The band was in town as part of the Warped
Tour. The source tells antiMusic that a member of the band got into a heated
verbal argument with a hotel employee which ended as soon as security showed
up on the scene and the band member left the lobby.
The argument supposedly was over the band's
booking of a room at the hotel with a bogus credit card number. At press
time the source has failed to respond to a follow up email requesting more
information such as the name of the hotel and there is no word on this
matter from the Stutterfly camp. So without firm confirmation, this stands
as a rumor at the moment. If we hear anything else we will follow up. But
it seems the battle between bands and hotels rage on.

Armored
Saint Reunion |
KNAC reports: It's a fluke. A one-time only
deal.
The Scorpions needed an opening band for
their show at the Dodge Theater in Phoenix, July 30th, and a promoter/manager
type who happened to be an old friend, gave John Bush a call and asked
if Armored Saint would do it.
After thinking it over, the band said "why
not?" They're gonna do a couple of rehearsals and then do the show. [see

About Quiet Riot: Quiet Riot was
formed in 1975 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni. Randy
and Kelly caught wind of Kevin's vocals and knew they had their frontman.
After two albums in Japan and the exit of Rhoads and Garni (Randy left
QR to join Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz), Quiet Riot burst onto the international
scene in 1983 with their US debut Metal Health. You couldn't turn
on MTV or rock radio without catching their hit single "Cum on Feel the
Noize.," That single, as well as the album's title track helped the band
make history by becoming the first metal band to ever top the Billboard
album chart. After a brief break-up the band reformed in October
of last year and have been rockin fans around the globe ever since.
The band is current in the midst of the "Rock Never Stops Tour" with Cinderella,
Ratt and Firehouse. See Kevin's site for dates.
