interesting comment, adrian. yes i agree thhat all out boy, good charlotte and simple plan are definately all pop/punk, but it is just plain wrong 2 put green day in that god-awful genre of pop/punk. green day have stayed true 2 their punk roots. just because they have matured doesnt mean that they arent punk anymore. just because they have created their own style doesnt mean they arent punk. just because they recieve constant radio play doesnt mean they arent punk. just because they have a ton of teenie 13 year old girls doesnt mean they arent punk, because they cant help if people think they they are "omgz so0o0o0o hawtt!" *quotes teenie*

I think Johnny Rotten it pretty Rotten! Green Day is trying to teach the youth of today to be unique and indivduals not this ... and all their songs are cool (Green Days) I'm glad I have no Sex Pistols songs on my iPod playlist nor anywhere near my computer, you'd never hear Green Day do this. Yeah Yeah Yeah call me whatever ... Poser?Fashion Victim? whatever? I will continue to wear my love for Green Day as a badge of honour forver!

I've posted this thing but it doesn't work, so I guess I'll just post this thing again.
I am just expressing my opinion here. If you can say "Rotten sux they are not the first punk bla bla bla". Then I guess I can say the other way around. No offense for Green day fans. Just my Two cents.
I think Rotten is right. First of all, sorry about the english, I am not a background speaker so it might sounds like 14 years old kid who just listened to punk yesterday. but yeah..
Something called "punk" is my treasure and always been my treasure. it is not only about the music itself, but the attitude is what makes it different from others. IMO ska music also have these kind of attitude. They really concern about politic, social and youth movement in rebeling against the government. I think some underground hip-hop/rap is also far from bling-bling sh*t, talk about politics and stuff. They are just not very well-known to the mainstream audiences. That is maybe the reason, why everyone thinks Rap (or whatever you wanna call it) Sucks.
Ok, back to the punk thingy. As far as I know, Sex Pistols or Ramones is not the creator of punk. Punk comes from Ska music which is originated in Jamaica, please correct me if I am wrong.
Punk rock used to be an underground movement. Why? because all these stupid leaders and all this big coorporation wants everything to be faked. They don't want to sign a band, put them on tv and tell everyone the "truth". Hell no.
This is the reason why, Pistols got sacked by two major labels before they were signed to Virgin Records. Man, What do you think "God saves the queen" is all about?
In the 70's "Never mind the Bollocks" was only sold in one store. All the radio station doesn't want to play the song, because the lyric is really offensive. But that was the TRUTH! If you live in that time and you say you are punk, you might be geting arrested.
Being punks were not accepted at that time. This is exactly what Lydon is saying.
It seems to be pretty cool being punk these days. Black clothing? Eye Liner (this is what green day do)? tie? F*ck that! it is something under your skin, something carried in your dna. F*ck Fashion Punks, because we are not too good for you. This is a way of life, not something you can buy.
Punk bands sounds the same these days. They sounds like green day. NOFX kid with punker-than-thou attitude. They are all think the same. when one band hates Bush, all the bands are gonna hate Bush, because it is really save to hate Bush. Go and hate the queen in the 70's and you will be put in jail.
Just For Your Information (I know You don't care but), hardcore comes from punk. Some hardcore band say that they are playing punk rock. just wanna give you some idea what punk rock might sounds like. Everyone is saying that Green Day, Simple Plan is punk, but I never hear anyone come up to me and talk about Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Circle Jerks, Nirvana(yes Nirvana is punk), Crass, Fugazi and I just could go on forever.
It is not some "punks" you watch on MTV. Yeah yeah yeah, I know, Some underground punks sounds a little more melodic but They have that "attitude" (not your Alkaline Trio and Taking back sunday stuff). It is what makes punk different, there is no rule to how you sound, but they have the same Attitude, attitude of not selling out. so I say it's punk.
You know, when you go to a punk rock show and be less "fashionable", everyone will think that you are a sheep. what a sad day, Punks has became a fashion crap. You have to wear this whatever clothing from Hot Topic (or whatever) to be punk.
In Conclusion, Green Day might call themselves punk. Because as I said before, there is no rule to how punk should sound, But I think rather than really think about the clothes they wear, cheesy music, They should concern more about the message. I think Bush is also listening to "American Idiot". Wow Politic Punx. Where da hell is everybody?
To Soul Crasher: I think Pistols never sell their catalog to an ad agency. It was them who use the catalog without asking for permission. (I might be wrong). :)

When you call bands like Green Day, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, you are doing the genre a huge disservice. These bands are all pop/punk - the gleaming, polished corporate garbage that spawned from punk rock. All of these bands lack the rebellion, the energy and the visceral thrill that real punk rock provided - instead, all of these bands record corny ballads and run around wearing mascara and crying in their moronic little videos (way to go, whoring it up for MTV). I agree with Johnny Rotten here, though Green Day is by no means the worst of the lot (it's definitely Simple Plan). However, that's not to say Green Day is good either - how can you say that they stayed true to punk rock when they've recorded so many embarassingly cheesy ballads ("Wake Me Up When September Ends", "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", "Good Riddance") that would make any punk rock fan worth his/her salt sick to their stomach. Going back to Rotten (or Lydon, whatever he prefers now) - shame on him and the Pistols for selling their catalog to an ad agency, if that is in fact the truth.

I think Rotten just needs to lay off. Hes only talkin' smack because hes an old washed up punk rocker-yeah, he WAS the master of his craft BACK WHEN he was big. However punk is not a big things these days, and for my generation, Green Day are the only punk rockers that are true to their roots that we still have. Rotten should of never opened his mouth, all he sis was scream to the whole world is-"I'm jelous of Green Day, they made it big off my type of music, why couldn't I have done that, man, I wish I was a member of Green Day."
Mr. Rotten, don't hate the player, hate the game.
Posted by Lori:
I was around for the original punk era - loved it then too - but now I'm so glad to have Green Day around I could bust. Jealousy doesn't become you Mr. Rotten - I've lost some respect at this point.
Posted by Eva:
rotten should stop complaining, this is his second rant on green day. jesus christ will he ever shut the **** up?
i think mr. rotten is just a little bit jelous
Posted by krystal:
mr rotten should cut his stupid crap already. green day are one of the best punk bands. justcause his band sucks doesnt mean he has to take it out on green day.
Posted by Stefanie:
Even before the Ramones were the New York Dolls. Rotten's just "rotten" about the fact that Green Day has made it farther and recieved more acclaim than his band did. At least Green Day's bassist has some talent... last time I checked Sid Vicious was a little too drugged up to learn how to play the bass.
It's not that I don't like the Sex Pistols; they're one of my favorites. It's just that this is the kind of stupid teenage-girl like stuff that I deal with at high school everyday.
Also, I don't see why he's complaining about this now. NO OFFENSE TO ANY GREEN DAY FAN WHO THINKS THEY'RE PUNK NOW, but Green Day was WAY more punk back in the late '80s and early '90s. They went from a punk band, to a rock band around the Nimrod/Warning era. With American Idiot, they are integrating more of the punk style, but in their own way. Basically, Rotten's comment is rather untimely and lacks any kind of truth behind it.

I couldnt agree more with you, chazbob. Sure, the pistols were around when punk first came out, but does that mean that they invented it? NO!!!! The Ramones were first, the original inventors of punk. Then there were also the clash, but do you hear them complaining? i dont think so! Do you hear any other members of the pistols complaining? no. Just like what Chezbob said, Green Day brought punk back. not only that, but they also influenced other great current punk bands such as blink-182. They are the reason punk is still around! And if you want to argue about being original, dont even think about it-did the pistols ever create a political rock opera that tells the story of a misfit punk who runs away from home, meets some new friends, hangs with the wrong crowd, gets into and alchalol, realises his mistakes and goes home? I DON'T THINK SO!!!! Face it Johnny, u suck.
Posted by CHAZBOB!:
What would he prefer it if punk just died out? Someone has to carry it on and Green Day are original whatever comes out of his trap.I even think that Green Day are responsible for the rivival of this genre. They sound nothing like the sex pistols! I SMELL JEALOUSY!
Posted by Lydia:
Oh come on! He should really cut it off! I think everybody got his message by now and I don't think that anybody shares it so he should mind his own business. Personally I'm tired of hearing Green Day are like this and Green Day are like that on and on again! I mean the time of Sex Pistols is gone so why not respect the ones who have succes by working hard?
