While most everybody spent Thursday talking about the Grammys, other things actually happened in the rock world. So we're leading off with the real stuff before we get to the self-congratulatory Grammy stuff (We are kind enough to indulge them for one day a year. When the time comes, we'll also be sure to cover the gloating after the predetermined winners get their validation from people who don't actually listen to their music.) We kick off with this report from Billboard:

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood was arrested by British police late on Wednesday on suspicion of assault and released on bail after questioning on Thursday. Surrey police said the 62-year-old rock star was arrested on suspected assault "in connection with a domestic incident." Marilyn Manson Breaks Up With Interscope But Makes Up With Evan Rachel Wood
(antiMusic) Marilyn Manson is a free man, at least on the music front. On the personal front he is no longer on the market. Manson tells Metal Hammer that he has left his long time label Interscope Records. So it looks like Manson will no longer be restrained creatively by their execs or have his success hampered by their black hole of a publicity department (requests go in and absolutely nothing comes back out) who wasn't up to task on the shock rockers last album

Blabbermouth had this: Marilyn Manson has parted ways with longtime record label Interscope following the disappointing sales performance of the shock-rocker's latest album, entitled "The High End Of Low". "We've just been released from our record contract with Interscope so I think a lot of the creative control on which my hands were tied on a lot of choices the music videos things like that," Manson told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine. "And the first example is the newest video, they clearly wouldn't have allowed me to make that video. So we started writing new songs on the road a bit like [David Bowie's album] 'Aladdin Sane' I think people can expect a new record a lot sooner than we [expected]. more on how the label held him back.

Now about him being off the market in a personal sense, we're not sure if anyone really gives a damn, but just in case Marilyn Manson has reconciled with actress Evan Rachel Wood. Maybe that fake snuff video did the trick? Spin.com's William Goodman took valuable time out of his day to write an entire article about this reunion. Check that out - here

HIM Premiere New Song Today
"Heartkiller," the new single from Sire Records' hard-rock heroes HIM, will premiere in the United States on MySpace on December 4th. The track is the first single from the band's upcoming new album, Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice, which will be released by Sire Records on February 9th, 2010.

Recorded at The Lair in Los Angeles, the album was produced by Matt Squire (Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Saosin) and mixed by Neal Avron (Linkin Park, Weezer, Fall Out Boy).

Screamworks: Love In Theory And Practice is HIM's seventh studio album and the follow-up to 2007's Venus Doom, which debuted at No. 12 in the U.S. and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Boxed/Special Limited Edition Packaging." In 2007, HIM, which is Ville Valo (vocals), Mige (bass), Linde (guitar), Burton (keyboards), and Gas (drums) supported Metallica in Europe before joining the Linkin Park-headlined Projekt Revolution tour across America, and headlined its own U.S. theater tour. The band's 2005 album Dark Light has the distinction of being the first album by a Finnish band to be certified gold in the U.S. - Myspace link

Opeth 20th Anniversary Shows
Opeth will commemorate their twentieth anniversary in the of Spring 2010 with six exclusive shows that will take place across the globe in various international locales such as Stockholm, Sweden; Essen, Germany; Paris, France; London, UK; New York City, NY; and Los Angeles, CA.

Frontman Mikael kerfeldt had the following to say on behalf of the band: "I can't believe it, but... f**k, we're celebrating 20 years. I've been in this band ever since I was 16. It's insane. As far as I remember, we've never had a release party, never celebrated anything officially. Well, now is the time, you hear? We've set up a string of shows, six of them actually, around the world. To say that they will be super-exclusive is beyond an understatement. We've discussed the set list already and it seems like we'll pull out a few songs we've never played before, some of which fans all over the world have been demanding to hear for years and years. Our main agenda for these shows is to have 'fun' whilst trying to blow your ----ing minds. You could say business as usual, but really, it'll be special. I can't stress enough how exclusive this will be. We will not add any more shows on top of the six that we've confirmed already, so please make up your mind early on whether you want to go or not - of course you ----ing do- as I would assume there's quite a few of our fans that might be interested in seeing a thing like this."

Akerfeldt said the band will spend the better part of January through March rehearsing for this special series of shows. "All to make you ----ing happy! OK, we'll be tight, very tight indeed. Come see us." It's a celebration," he finished.

Metallica Is Apparently No Longer Considered Metal
The Grammys sure have changed. They once considered Jethro Tull metal and now they are going in the other direction with this year's nominations by designating Metallica hard rock. (At least it wasn't pop.) We're just curious who draws the line between metal and hard rock and what that line is. Also we wonder when the Grammys are going to catch up with reality since metal outsells rap and country see story but the Grammys still only have one metal category but have multiple categories for those less popular genres.

Some could argue that Metallica's "The Unforgiven III" isn't really metal since the song is mellower, so it makes sense that they be nominated for the hard rock Grammy and not the metal one. While the song is mellower, it definitely qualifies as a metal ballad based on the guitar solo section alone. That's a judgment call but with an industry that is so quick to use the punk label on pop bands, it curious to see them call Metallica hard rock. Sure they've mellowed over the years and metal has gotten heavier but their name is Metallica not Hardrockica!

Now that we've ranted a little, here is the announcement from Warner Bros. Records that inspired this rant: Metallica were nominated for a Grammy Awards today for "Best Hard Rock Performance" for "The Unforgiven III," a track from their two-time Grammy Award-winning album Death Magnetic. - more on this story

Lamb of God Honored To Be Among Metal Elite

The nomination is in the "Best Metal Performance" category for the track "Set to Fail" from their #2 debuting album "Wrath" which was released on Epic Records in 2009.

Drummer Chris Adler had the following to say about Lamb Of God's second Grammy nomination: "We are honored to be nominated once again. Regardless of the outcome, we are in very elite company and it's a proud moment for us and our fans. Thank you for recognizing us, we can't wait for the afterparty!"

Guitarist Mark Morton commented on their nomination as well: "Wow...our second Grammy nomination! Who would've thought?? As cool as it is to even be considered for such an award, the real thrill is that we're in the running alongside some of metal's greatest and most legendary acts. This is a lot of fun...thanks to everyone that voted us in."

Singled Out: Nonpoint
(antiMusic) Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Next week you'll be able to hear heavy rockers Nonpoint in a whole new light when they release their new acoustic EP "Cut The Chord," featuring unplugged versions of some of their biggest hits. Frontman Elias Soriano was kind of enough to take a break from the recording of their new album to tell us the behind the scenes story for their hit "Your Signs," which is one of the tracks on the new EP. Here is Elias with the story and it's a good one!

Though early in our career, the song "Your Signs" was pretty much a venting outcry to the big scary machine that we like to call THE MAJOR RECORD LABEL that the direction they wanted us to go in was not what we wanted as a band.

We had just gotten off Ozzfest and THE LABEL was eager to get new music in the hands of our newfound fans. With the success that bands in the pop rock genre were having at the time on our label (Blink 182, New Found Glory, etc.), there was a fair amount of pressure from the label to hash out another record, containing what they always like to refer as a massive brain dead radio hit. Being that it took us nearly two years of our lives to fine tune the songs on our first full length "Statement," it seemed next to impossible for us to try to do it in the 3 months the label was giving us to deliver.

But, with a lot of convincing from our managers at the time, mounted with an offer from the label to purchase a $15,000 Protools system including the computer and the outboard gear to write on the road while finishing our tour cycle on "Statement" (which at the time was something only bands of gold and platinum status did). So we said yes. MISTAAAAAKE!!

The more we wrote, the more we were reminded, Write a hit.. Write a hit.. Write a hit.. That song's cool, but it's not a hit. I like the chorus, but it's not a hit. The more we forced it the more upset and annoyed we got. Writing a rock record on a bus is no easy task. Daily distractions. Bus noise bleeding into tracks. Having to record around the late night tour schedule. Members being half into the writing process. Comments from outside sources swaying our intentions and natural influences. We felt like we were under a microscope. Right when we felt like we were on to something, management or the label wanted something else. The clock was ticking and we didn't know what direction we were going. What are we doing here? What the hell do they want and expect from us.

Soooo.. We get home from the tour.. We've got 8 songs.. We immediately get into the practice spot and start to play what we got for our managers. Toward the end of the tour I came up with the chorus lyric "your signs are pointing to nowhere" and really hadn't put it to anything because it came to me towards the end of the writing process during the peak of our frustration with everything. Then it happened. The guys started jamming a song they were just improvising, and I remembered I had that lyric and just started singing it. Holy ----. Everything stopped. We immediately got excited and i remember us pretty much finishing it that day.

The following day we called in our manager at the time and played him the song.. As soon as I sang, "Your Signs!! are pointed to no where.." He stood up, raised his hands like a referee after a successful field goal kick. And for one of the few times during that draining, frustrating process I smiled on the inside. Not because I was happy that I pleased the manager and the Label. But because it took a song about them pressuring, rushing, and trying to change us into a band we didn't want to be for us to write a song they liked enough to hurry the record out.

Granted that now, I look back with pride and a sense of accomplishment when I think about that record and song, there's still a little piece of me cracking up on the inside saying, "Hey genius, the songs about you!"

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the EP - right here!
