Metallica and Megadeth Feud Media Hype?
(Rock News Desk) Lars Ulrich says a great deal of the rivalry between Metallica and Megadeth in the 1990s was generated by the press but it became real after he and Dave Mustaine appeared together in Some Kind of Monster.

The infamous movie details Metallica's descent into near-collapse during the recording of what would become their 2003 album St Anger. In one of the most remembered moments, "performance coach" Phil Towle has Ulrich and Mustaine discuss the emotional injury inflicted on the Megadeth man when he was thrown out of Metallica in 1983. Now Ulrich says that was the darkest moment in the thrash musicians' relationship. He tells Revolver: "In 1984 and 85 Dave would come up to play San Francisco a lot and I'd always go find him. We'd drink and do drugs and sit around. We got over our issues really quickly. We had a cool thing going through most of the 80s.

"It wasn't until both bands started getting bigger that something started happening in the press. It was different from what we had going between us there was almost two different relationships there. The press loved it and it got a life of its own. So over the 90s it got a little frosty at times but right up until 99 we would always hang out when we were in the same city." more on this story

U2 Break Rolling Stones Record
(Gibson) The Rolling Stones formerly laid claim to the highest-grossing tour of all time, but U2 have overtaken them with their U2 360 world tour, which began in 2009 in Barcelona and is still going strong.

This Sunday, April 10, U2 will officially break the record with their performance at Sao Paolo's Morumbi Stadium. At that point, the 360 tour will have fetched more than $558 million. And it's not over yet, kids.

Billboard estimates that by tour's end, it will have grossed more than $700 million. A U2 tour date reportedly grosses about $6.4 million, with the band playing to an average crowd of 63,600. So far the 360 tour has hit more than 30 countries. more on this story

Motley Gaga
(Gibson) Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee is the latest in a long line of established rockersfrom Elton John to Gene Simmonsto give props to pop sensation Lady Gaga.

Speaking to the Artisan News Service, Lee gushed about Gaga's style and expressed a desire to work with her.

"I totally get it, man," Lee said. "And depending on what she's influenced by, I can tellbecause I see her rocking Mtley Cre shirts, so she's definitely a rocker, and she obviously, stylistically, with her music, she's very talented; she plays crazy piano and sings her ass off. She likes the modern dance and club (expletive), so she's basically throwing it all in there, and that's what I'm into, and that's what I'm doingessentially throwing it all in there, from electro to (expletive) metal. I like it all. There's a girl I would love to do something with one day, man; it'd be really cool. We would probably come up with some sick (expletive)." more on this story

Black Sabbath Born Again
(Rock AAA) Black Sabbath's "Born Again" is born again on May 30. Sabbath's 1983 album gets the deluxe reissue treatment in a new 2-disc package. "Born Again" was the only Sabbath album to feature vocalist Ian Gillan who was, at the time, a solo artist and former singer for Deep Purple.

Gillan had first turned down the offer to join Sabbath, but his manager later convinced him to have a meeting with guitarist Tony Iommi and bassist Geezer Butler. The two Sabs met with Gillan at The Bear public house in Oxford, and Gillan officially joined the band in February 1983.

Released in October 1983, "Born Again" was a commercial success. It was the highest-charting Sabbath album in the United Kingdom since 1973's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath," and became an American Top 40 hit. Despite this, it became the first Sabbath release to not have any RIAA certification (gold or platinum) in the U.S. more on this story

Study Finds That Piracy Has Zero Effect on Music Sales
(Rock News Desk) A study of the music industry by leading financial body the London School of Economics concludes that filesharing has not contributed to the collapse of the music business in any way and suggests industry chiefs are lying when they say it has.

Bosses of the music and movie industries have focused on blaming pirate activity for all negative financial results, and have ignored the fact there's a decline in leisure spending across the world, says the LSE. They conclude that pirates are not to blame for a drop in sales. Instead, people are simply spending less on leisure pursuits because they're faced with higher bills, lower pay rises and less job security.

And the report points out that people who don't own computers and therefore can't share files have stopped buying music at exactly the same rate as those who do. Citing an earlier report the LSE quotes: "Downloads have an effect on sales that is statistically indistinguishable from zero." more on this story

Bob Dylan Censors Himself
(Rock News Desk) The Communist government of Vietnam didn't have to impose changes to Bob Dylan's setlist when he played in Ho Chi Minh City last night because the singer left them out himself.

It was Dylan's first appearance in a country where he's still seen by some as an icon of the anti-war movement through politically-charged peace songs including The Times They Are A Changing and Blowin' in the Wind.

Government officials usually demand to vet western artist's setlists to delete political content. But event promoter Rod Quinton says: "No restrictions were imposed." more on this story

Dan Spitz Returns With Post Anthrax Band
(Rock News Desk) Former Anthrax guitarist is finally ready to record with his new project Deuxmonkey, after admitting he had to take time out from his music career to help his wife deal with the challenges of bringing up their two autistic sons.

Spitz left the thrash giants in the early 1990s to concentrate on his luxury watch business, but returned for their classic-era reunion with singer Joey Belladonna in 2005 and left again two years later.

Now he explains Deuxmonkey, which includes ex-Crimson Glory singer Wade Black, Accept bassist Peter Baltes and ex-Yngwie drummer Patrick Johansson, had to be put on hold after his identical twins were diagnosed with the neural disorder. Spitz says: "After the end of my last touring cycle with Anthrax, I needed a long break to take care of Brendan and Jaden. I couldn't leave my wonderful wife Candi to deal with the daily grind of multiple therapists at the house. more on this story

Sweet Guns N' Roses Anniversary
On this day in 1988, Guns N' Roses shot the video for their song "Sweet Child O' Mine" in a ballroom in Huntington Beach, CA. Gibson takes a look back: Released in the U.S. on August 18, 1988, "Sweet Child o' Mine" was Guns N' Roses' third single from their blockbuster debut album, Appetite for Destruction. It would go on to become Guns' first and only #1 single in the U.S., as well as rack up countless high rankings on a plethora of "all-time best" lists, including #1 on Kerrang's list of "100 Greatest Riffs," #1 on Total Guitar's "Greatest Riffs of All Time," #37 on Guitar World's "100 Greatest Guitar Solos," and so on. The list is long.

By most accounts, "Sweet Child o' Mine" was little more than a song born out of chance, boredom and no small amount of sheer luck. Slash, the creator of the song's signature riff, has even been quoted as having a smidge of loving disdain for the song, relegating that classic riff into little more than a "string skipping" exercise. During a VH-1 special, the Chapeaued Shredder admitted that the riff was joke, a "circus" melody he came up with while warming up with former GN'R drummer, Steven Adler. Co-guitarist Izzy Stradlin soon joined the jam with bassist Duff McKagan, while upstairs Axl Rose heard the boys and started writing lyrics, which he based on his girlfriend at the time, former Whilhelmina model (and daughter of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers) Erin Everly. The song originally had three verses, but producer Mike Clink convinced the band to use only two, while also including Axl's "Where do we go? Where do we go now?" mid-song breakdown.

McKagan told Hit Parader, "It was written in five minutes. It was one of those songs, only three chords. You know that guitar lick Slash does at the beginning? It was kinda like a joke because we thought, 'What is this song? It's gonna be nothing. It'll be filler on the record.' Slash was just messing around when he first wrote that lick." more on this story

Coldplay Olympics?
(Gibson) Coldplay are strongly rumored as the music act for the opening of the London 2012 Olympics. According to Music-News.com, the Dartington Hall Trust, which will commission the Olympics song, see songwriter Chris Martin as their first choice.

A source told the Daily Mirror: "Chris is at the top of the list to front the official record. He's a huge star and a British musical icon, with an international profile. We're pulling out all the stops to get hold of him, ideally with the rest of Coldplay involved, too.

"Coldplay are the biggest stadium rockers in Britain today and their style of anthemic music would be perfect for the Olympics. The hope is that they would perform at the opening ceremony, as well as produce a recording of the track, which could help fund good causes in British sport." more on this story

Singled Out: Antigone Rising's Everywhere Is Home
Today Nini Camps from Antigone Rising, the all female rock band from Long Island, tells us about "Everywhere Is Home" from their forthcoming album "23 Red". Here is the story:

I had recently read a movie script where a girl returns to her hometown to see just how much she has changed. It was a basic theme really "struggle to move away, move away, find self, come back home with new perspective".

I was sitting with Daniel Tashian, a great Nashville based song writer and i was telling him about the story. Istarted playing a little figure in D and Daniel jumped all over it turning it into a great easy breezy strumming pattern. Before long, we had the chorus which seemed to combine the script story with our own experiences. For example, "walk with me over water" was an image from the script and the actual line "everywhere is home" just seemed to resonate with both of us at the time.

It was a gorgeous summer day and it felt right to sing.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and check out the lyrics right here!

(Rock News Desk) Poison drummer Rikki Rockett wishes the band could re-record their first album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, because they can all play better than they could in 1986.

And he's continuing to pressure his bandmates to make a new record, so they can make use of their life experiences and avoid being labelled a legacy act.

The drummer tells Bravewords: "I wish to God I could re-record those songs, because I play differently now. The core of who I am is the same but I'd put a much better spin on it. I'd throw in those little things that I just didn't know back then. more on this story

Korn Drove Megadeth's Mustaine Back To Drinking
(Rock News Desk) Korn frontman Jonathan Davis says he regrets starting Dave Mustaine drinking again but it was the only alternative to living in fear of the Megadeth mainman while the bands toured together.

Looking back on the band's 20-year history, Davis pinpoints their 1995 support slot with the thrash giants as a learning experience.

"It was hard touring with Megadeth because, at the time, Dave Mustaine was really mean, and just had attitude. It was scary being on there. I got my feelings hurt because he was so mean at times." He tells Explore Music. "I was this young little kid, and I was drinking at the time so I thought, 'That's Dave Mustaine and he wants to drink, so I'll give him a drink.' Duff McKagan Recalls Last Ride With Kurt Cobain
(Gibson) Velvet Revolver, Loaded and former Guns N' Roses bass player Duff McKagan has been talking about the plane ride he took with Kurt Cobain, shortly before the tragic death of the Nirvana frontman.

Blabbermouth reports that McKagan spoke with VH1 Radio Networks' Dave Basner about the experience. "We were both sort of in the same boat. A couple guys recognizing where each other was at," he said. "It's no fun being that completely and utterly addicted. And then we get off at Sea-Tac Airport and it's like, there's a mass rush of people, and all the sudden because it's like him from a big band and me from a big band and all the sudden everybody just stopped and stared at us. Maybe I just remember it this way but everyone just stopped and we were like, 'Okay where do we go with this thing?' But I went to baggage claim and that was it."

Cobain shot himself sometime before April 8, 1994 when an electrician discovered his body. He left a suicide note: "I haven't felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music, along with really writing for too many years now." more on this story

Evile Rebecca Black
We figured we would start you week off right with a video of Evile taking on Rebecca Black's infamous 'song,' "Friday," in their new studio video.

Evile are currently recording the new album at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England, and are once again working with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir), who produced the band's previous effort, 2009's Infected Nations.

"Having a lot of fun tracking this album. Yesterday our manager, Julie, came to visit and listen to a few tracks. Her reaction was very positive, so even more great vibes going around. All drums done, nearly all bass done, all rhythm guitars done, all guitar harmonies done. We're starting guitar solos today, and vocals are well on their way," says lead guitarist Ol Drake. "All I can say is, I love the stuff on this album. Out of the three albums we've done so far, I've had the most fun on this, and this is the most creative we've been in terms of writing. Simply can't wait for people to get the completed package!" Check out Evile Friday here

Corey Taylor Tributes Late Slipknot Bandmate Paul Gray
(Rock AAA) Corey Taylor paid an emotional tribute to the late Paul Gray on what would have been Gray's 39th birthday during a concert in San Antonio, Texas, on Friday night.

The Stone Sour and Slipknot frontman dedicated the song 'Bother' to his former Slipknot bassist during the show and admitted his ongoing grief at the sudden passing of someone he considered a 'brother.'

Jay Nanda of the San Antonio Metal Music Examiner revealed the details of the emotionally charged moment in his review of the gig. He wrote: "With the stage belonging to Taylor and his guitar, the frontman went into 'Bother', pausing a couple of times to wipe tears. When it looked as if he wouldn't be able to make it through the song, the crowd uplifted him with chants of 'Corey, Corey, Corey." more on this story

Elton John's Band Partied Harder Than The Stones
(Rock News Desk) Long-time Elton John guitarist Davey Johnstone says his band, amongst the biggest in the world during the 1970s, were "twice as hardcore" as bands more known for their heavy lifestyles but they got away with it because of the type of music they played.

And the man behind classic rock performances like Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting says he's amazed the classic four-piece act survived the era intact. Johnstone, bassist Dee Murray, who died in 1992, and drummer Nigel Olsson were the mainstay members of John's band during his first flush of success, when they experimented with a wide range of musical forms. But the guitarist reports they also experimented with a wide range of recreational drugs.

He tells Music Radar: "We did as many drugs as you can imagine and drank as much alcohol as we could possibly pour down our throats. But because of the music we were never linked to the drug culture like, say, the Rolling Stones. People didn't think we were decadent, even though we were." more on this story

Apparently, Williams would often go without shaving on tour and, in anticipation of the group's summer schedule, got a tattoo of a razor on her ankle with the words "Shave Me" next to it.

Williams told Cosmopolitan, "I got this because we'd be on tour and I wouldn't shave for weeks. The guys would pull up my pants and write 'Shave Me.' Eventually, I got it tattooed on as a little reminder."

10 Events That Changed Rock and Roll Forever
(Gibson) Rock and roll history and cultural history are aligned in profound ways, with the music generally reflecting the times in which it is being made. Sometimes, however, rock undergoes a seismic shift that impacts not only the culture at-large, but also the future course of rock itself. Gibson takes a look at ten seminal rock events that shook the music in ways that reverberate to this day. Here are a couple.

Ike Turner Records "Rocket 88": Determining what constitutes the very first rock and roll song is a dicey proposition, but a strong case can be made for "Rocket 88." Recorded by Ike Turner and his band (with Jackie Brenston on guest vocals) at Sam Phillips' Memphis studio in March 1951, the R&B boogie-rocker was fitted with one of the first instances of fuzz guitar. "Man, I had no idea that that song was going to be what it became," Turner said decades later, in an interview with Gibson.com. The song topped the R&B charts for five weeks that summer.

The Beatles Appear on The Ed Sullivan Show: On Sunday, February 9, 1964, 73 million viewers tuned in to watch The Beatles perform for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. The following week, a sizeable portion of America's school kids began growing moptops and imploring their parents to buy them guitars.
