McCartney hand-picked the artists himself, including KISS, The Cure, B.B. King, Paul Rodgers, Billy Joel and Garth Brooks.

It's partly a family affair, as Paul's son, James, will be on the record doing a song with The Cure. "James was over the moon at playing with The Cure," a source told The Sun. "He's always been a big fan. They all went into a studio in Sussex and hung out together." more on this story

American Idol Eyed Iggy Pop For Judging Job
(hennemusic) When American Idol was scrambling last year to figure out a way to rework the tired reality series, the producers went on a hunt for new judges for the program.

We know how things worked out, obviously, but can you imagine Iggy Pop sitting on the panel? It could have happened.

Billboard reports Idol executives contacted Iggy about possibly being one of the show's judges for its 10th season. "It didn't go very far," he tells Billboard. "There were two phone calls...I wasn't sure I was interested or available. They called me...I was curious and we spoke a couple times, and that was as far as that went. I don't think I could've done the right job for them on that particular show. I think Steven Tyler does a really, really good job of it." more on this story

Davies Brothers To Meet To Discuss Kinks Reunion
(Rock News Desk) Ray Davies will meet brother Dave next week to discuss a Kinks reunion, and says: "I'll do it if he will."

The 60s icons have been the subject of reunion rumours for years, although it's never come to fruition, often due to the heated rivalry between the Davies brothers. The closest they came was a planned gathering a few years ago, which was called off after bassist Peter Quaife, who's since died, began suffering kidney problems.

Ray tells Rolling Stone: "I'm seeing Dave next week. I hear he's been saying stuff in the press like, 'I'll do it, but Ray doesn't want to do it.' I know he's expressed an interest, and also that he's called me an a**hole it depends what side of bed he gets up on.

"Well, this is me saying, 'Ray will do it if Dave does it.'" more on this story

Iron Maiden's Dave Murray Looks Back and Forward
(Gibson) In a recent interview with CreativeLoafing.com , it was pointed out to Iron Maiden's Dave Murray that, 12 years after singer Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith rejoined the group in 1999, Iron Maiden have managed to maintain what has become their most enduring lineup.

"This is it, really," he said. "This is how the band will exist in the future. I can't see there being any changes. Ultimately it's the perfect lineup, because it does extend back to when Adrian was in the band for the first few albums. And obviously when Bruce was in the band, so this is obviously the strongest and most creative lineup Maiden has ever had. Everything kind of gels and glues together really well. As far as rehearsing and writing, everything fits into place nicely. We just sit down like we always do and work out songs. We wouldn't be changing anymore. This is it; I think we're kinda far along enough now to say. Also, it's my favorite lineup, and also most of the other guys. There's a chance for everyone to play and enjoy what they're doing."

As for when this lineup will head back into the studio to record a follow-up to the smash hit, The Final Frontier, Murray was enthusiastic, if a bit non-committal. "A lot of the time you plan ahead, and things tend to get in the way. At the moment it's nice to focus on the here and now. We're on tour, we've got another later this summer, and then we'll all need a rest. Possibly there will be, but it's hard to say at the moment. It definitely won't be next year, anyway. My gut feeling is once we sit down, if everyone's up for itthat's the main thingthen we'll go for it."

What does Dave think about their recent Grammy win?

I can't wait to hit the road with this baby!"

And it's been a busy time for Portnoy who has another two projects on the boil at the same time: "[This] has been an unbelievably productive year for me so far. Testament To The Strangely Perfect Convergence Of Heavy Metal And Jazz
(Gibson) In a new interview, Testament guitarist Alex Skolnick is speaking about the strangely perfect convergence of heavy metal and jazz.

Skolnick, who joined thrash metal band Testament at age 16 and toured with Judas Priest, Megadeth, White Zombie and Slayer, now serves as ringleader of jazz group the Alex Skolnick Trio. Their newly released fourth album, Veritas, includes nine original tracks, along with a cover of Metallica's "Fade to Black."

Skolnick recalled to Spinner.com the moment that jazz first impacted him. "When we recorded the third Testament album, we did it at the Fantasy Studios in Berkeley," said Skolnick. "I remember being on break and hearing the most amazing saxophone playing I've ever heard in my life. It was scary it was going so many places. I hadn't been that blown away since I heard Eddie Van Halen do 'Eruption.' I had my ear to the door of this studio and I didn't know who was inside, or whether it was even a live band."

What was playing on the other side of that door? John Coltrane's Live at Birdland. Later, Miles Davis and others would influence Skolnick as well, leading him to leave Testament behind to enroll in the Jazz Performance Program at the New School in New York. more on this story

Coleman played her part from 220 miles above Earth late last week. Anderson played his part while on tour in Perm, Russia, during the weekend. The two parts were then joined. Video from the performance

That'll Be the Day Born On This Day
(Gibson) One of the most down-to-earth, accurate and realistic rock and roll movies of all time premiered on this day in 1973.

Britain's answer, in some ways, to American Graffiti, That'll Be the Day looked back fondly, but realistically at Britain's late '50s, early '60s pre-Beatle youth culture. Future pop star David Essex, in his breakthrough role (he'd been playing Jesus in Godspell on the stage), played Jim MacLaine, a frustrated teen determined to break out of the shackles of small-town life in dull, boring, bland, post-war Britain.

Essex's own life was probably a lot harsher than that of his essentially middle-class character who opts out of a cozy path to university for life on the edge instead. In fact, Essex grew up in a particularly impoverished and tough part of London, and was pals with soccer pro Frank Lampard Sr., father of current Chelsea and England soccer star Frank Lampard. more on this story
