Reader Rant: Finally, something called Vyxyn wrote us a long rambling rant about our "My Chemical Sellout" headline, due to the fact that the group had licensed their music to auto-tuned geeks of Glee. While none of Vyxyn's points were valid, it was correct that we were wrong to call them sellouts since you have to start from a baseline of artistic integrity to technically be a sellout. Our bad.
Rare Hendrix, AC/DC, Clapton, Pearl Jam and Tom Petty Record Store Day Releases |
Among the special releases: a 7" single from Derek and the Dominos that features the unreleased "Got to Get Better in a Little While" with "Layla" on the other side; Hendrix's "Fire" on 7" of red vinyl or on a three-track CD single; AC/DC's "Shoot to Thrill" and "War Machine" on a 7" vinyl single; and full-length vinyl LP versions of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers's self-titled debut and You're Gonna Get It.
One of the more interesting releases is a Franz Ferdinand EP that features covers of their songs by other artists, including LCD Soundsystem, Debbie Harry and Peaches. In other cases, bands have teamed up to "split" a single, which is the case with Green Day and Husker Du ("Don't Know if You are Lonely"), Mastodon and ZZ Top ("Just Got Paid") and Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Ramones ("Havana Affair").

Vince Neil Didn't Deserve Jail Sentence? |
Neil killed Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle Dingley and injured two passengers in another vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol in 1984. He was arrested again last June for DUI and speeding in his home city of Las Vegas.
He was convicted in January after cutting a deal to avoid a trial which could have led to a six-month sentence. Instead he accepted 15 days in prison followed by 15 days of house arrest, and maintained he'd learned his lesson, saying: "I've realised I have to take responsibility. I have to pay for it."
The singer tells the Las Vegas Sun: "They were a little harsh in the sentencing. But they wanted to make an example of me, and that's what it is."

Ozzy Returning To Classic Sound |
"I think he is going to return to a classic rock band record," Clufetos said. "What he has expressed is that he wants to make it the band playing live in a room so wherever that takes us. Less technology and more amps and drums."
The drummer said that the creative process has already begun, with the guys in the band working on new ideas in between gigs on Ozzy's world tour. "We are already coming up with new ideas backstage, in the hotel rooms and at soundcheck and have a bunch of ideas recorded, whether they be small or full songs," he said. "We are working on things slowly for the next... whatever it may be; time will tell what happens with them."

Def Leppard's Joe Elliot Jams With Thin Lizzy |
Elliott, who has lived in Dublin for years and recently helped re-mix three classic Thin Lizzy albums, was thrilled with the chance to sing with one of his all-time favorite bands: "I suppose you could say it was inevitable that I'd be asked to join the boys when they came through Dublin, what with all the close ties we have, with my involvement in the recent re-mixes and Vivian and Ricky [Warwick, Thin Lizzy's vocalist for this tour] in the lineup. It was also the last night of their European tour, so it was totally a party atmosphere you know, sold-out show, hometown gig, [Lynott's mother] Philomena in the Royal Box!
"I was watching from a great vantage point," Elliott continued, "And I have to say they were absolutely magnificent! Vivian fits like a glove, perfectly replicating the styles of Eric Bell, Brian Robertson and Gary Moore, but doing it his way! Having worked with him now for 19 years, I just knew he'd pull it off, and there's nobody more happy than me to see him do it, as they're his favorite band I joined them fittingly for 'The Boys are Back in Town,' and I gotta say, it definitely gets you in the mood to play when you get a reaction like they did that night. My favorite gig for a long, long time!"

Rob Zombie Rules Out White Zombie Reunion |
Zombie also slammed the door shut on the possibility of any White Zombie reunion. "I don't see the point. I think as most things people have a memory of something like 'I saw them when I was 14-years-old and it was the greatest thing ever' but if they saw us now they'd probably go 'I wish I hadn't seen that reunion, it was awful," He tells Rock AAA:
"It is better to leave it alone and I haven't talked to anyone from the band except John Tempesta in about 15-years."

Singled Out: Lisa Savidge's Fire Exiting |
First a little background. I did two combat tours in Iraq and a lot of awful things in-between working as part of a special ops/intelligence group. All in all, I would say the horror that I partook of during those years absolutely pales in comparison to the things you heard about on the news. Well, the weight of it all finally got to me and I snapped, finding myself back in the "real world" on a mental health status. That is, until a year later (after I'd already started writing for Lisa Savidge) when they tried to "backdoor draft" me for some more fun in the sun. All of the demons that I thought had been kept at bay with a steady diet of this country's primary legal - and incidentally most powerful - drug, alcohol, came out of the woodwork and I had a complete nervous breakdown.
They stuck me in these awful WWII barracks while they decided if I was fit for duty, and during this time (two weeks or so), I did not sleep, eat, and after about day three, could not stop my hands from shaking enough to perform even the most basic tasks. I felt as though the mind of a crazed and rabid monkey had been implanted into the body of a dying 80 year old man. Thankfully, the doctors there had two brain cells, and figured out that this whole ordeal probably wasn't a good idea and decided that I could go home.
By the time I got back, my symptoms hadn't improved much - I still couldn't sleep (or rest at all) and my hands were still shaking uncontrollably. I was relating this experience to Ellery (while under heavy sedation), who wrote down the bits that would work for a song ("capitalizing on your misery" as he called it). That's where most of the lyrics came from, except for the last one (and title line) which was in reference to a sign I had seen in the barracks. You see, above the door on the top floor (where I had been housed) there was a sign that said "Fire Exiting" - presumably meaning "Fire Exit" - which, when opened, revealed that the stairs had gone and nothing awaited you but a 30 foot vertical drop onto solid concrete. An apt metaphor for the military's treatment of their "damaged goods" if ever there was one.
Later on (when I could play guitar again), I took to the task of building a song that musically conveyed the feeling of losing one's mind. We went for a sparse, semi-instrumental arrangement to play on the way that everything becomes sort of abstract as your grip on the real slides, and built the whole thing around a drum beat that really can't decide if it's 3/4 or 4/4. The final piece came in a bit of production on the jittery rhythm guitar, which I wanted to use to convey a sense of paranoia. For this I used a ring modulator to create the sense that the listener is surrounded from the very beginning - no escape - and then double-tracked/hard panned the rhythm with my foot on the wah pedal, but moving it as little as I could. I think it sounds kind of like being submerged up to the ears in a hostile, staccato, organic mass.
I especially came to like the sheer beauty of the instrumental segments, as things can take on this paradoxical majesty when viewed from the bottom. Also, when it came time to record the vocals I did them leveled right to the clip line of a cheap tube preamp I had lying around so that the words would waver unpredictably between clear calmness and mad raving from moment to moment and capture the sort of twitchy nature I had developed.
People often ask me about my various experiences and what they were like, and I've never really had right words... This song's probably the closest I've ever gotten to being able to describe it.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you check out the video

Smashing Pumpkins' Corgan Pulls A Hoax? |
Rolling Stone tracked down an assistant to photographer Melodie McDaniel who says he is "pretty sure" the photo was shot specifically for the cover, and that Fiorentino's age makes it unlikely that she's the girl in the shot. Fiorentino would have been around 14 at the time of Siamese Dream, but Rolling Stone points out that the girls in the iconic photo look to be about seven years old.
So what's the truth? Is Corgan pulling the collective legs of the entire SP fan community? One person who's not giving away anything on the matter is Fiorentino, whose sole public response to the news has been to retweet Rolling Stone's article calling Corgan's statement into question. Gary Cherone Taking His Hurtsmile On The Road |
Speaking to Mitch Lafon of Bravewords.com, Cherone said the band built off the musical tension between himself and his brother, guitarist Mark Cherone: "Mark and I have been very close, but musically there's always tension," he said. "The advantage of having your brother [in the band] is that I know him as well as he knows me. He knows my moods and I know his. I'll stay away from him when he's in a bad mood."
Cherone has gone to great pains to assure fans that, unlike their mid-'90s breakup, this time Extreme isn't going anywhere. "Extreme is alive and well," he told Lafon. "Nuno [Bettencourt] and I are separate, but writing. We plan on recording this year and if the right tour comes up (like Whitesnake for example), Extreme will be on the road too."

Sonne Adam's Transformation Coming in April |
The history of Sonne Adam (which roughly translates into "hate humanity" in Hebrew) dates back to 2007 when a young Israeli duo consisting of Davidov (all instruments) and Dahan (vocals) started a musical project to create "death metal in the vein of early Paradise Lost but with a more shamelessly evil and blasphemous touch and some Morbid Angel thrown in the mix". Plain and simple.
