Preaching Metallica |
"Some kid asked me at church to preach Metallica. I sort of said, 'Yeah, sure,' and told him I'd pray about it, which is how we slough people off, and then the next day someone from our church called me with Metallica tickets," Van Sloten said. "So my wife and I went to Metallica and had an experience there, in a very deep communal sense that these people are all sharing a lament and a feeling of injustice about how screwed up the world is. That got my heart into it so I went back and read all the lyrics and as I was reading their lyrics I would have a biblical truth or a scriptural passage come at the same time."
Van Sloten was inspired to begin employing Metallica songs, including "Creeping Death," in his work as a pastor at the Christian Reformed New Hope Chuch. "Metallica wrote ['Creeping Death'] based on the 10 plagues and the Exodus," he said. "Basically you are quoting the same episode. I saw these connections between biblical truth and Metallica as heavy metal truth. When you put them side by side, it convinced me that Metallica had to be preached."

Sorum Discusses Velvet Revolver's Plans |
Sorum says of auditioning new singers: "We tried out some fairly unknown guys and some guys that have been out there a little bit. But the guy we're really excited about know is a pretty known guy. I don't want to say anything yet because we're still in the dating phase. We haven't consummated the relationship or made a gentleman's agreement. So I can't let the cat out of the bag until there's an official stamp of approval on the deal."
When asked if he and Slash have already written material for the next album, he said: "Yeah, we've got some tunes. We've got some great riffs. We're trying to strip it down a little bit. There's some good stuff. I would say we've probably got about four or five pretty good contenders with lyrics for stuff I'd be happy on a record. It's definitely rocking. But overall, we don't have too much music yet, because we're gonna just get in there and do it. The beauty about being in a band with these guys for so many years is we know what we've all got to offer on that front. So we don't have to pre-think things a whole lot. Even though we can dabble in ballads and play in other styles, we're pretty much comfortable being in a rock 'n' roll unit. We don't have to make ourselves something that we aren't. We're traditional in that sense."

Blink-182 Discover That Nice Guys Finish Late |
The three-piece were more intent on preserving their relationship than being honest with each other, making it nearly impossible to develop a creative dynamic in the studio.
They reformed in 2009 after four years apart following a plane crash in which drummer Travis Barker nearly died, an event which brought the old friends back together. After a time they got over their initial over-sensitivity and the new record will be released later this year, along with a documentary detailing the process.

Singled Out: The Gray Lions |
Asked to write about one of my songs for The Gray Lions off the new CD Run Wild, I came up blank! They're all some? But "Smaug's Revenge" is one of my oldest friends amongst them, written in the mid-seventies while in college. It's a ballad in the truest sense - a story song.
If you've ever read The Hobbit you know who Smaug is, if not: he's a dragon. My Smaug is one coexisting among humans and just sick and tired of the venomous little prigs. He talks to himself (and the audience) before finally getting the Hell out of here, while spreading some well deserved havoc and mayhem. It also is a strange song - besides the fact it's from the point of view of a dragon from space, of course - because he speaks in three distinct voices.
I've been doing this song like that for all these years and recently reworked it a little for this CD. My good friend (and our producer), Mark Hudson, added the repeating title to what's one of his favorites (he IS a bit strange, after all). He was afraid no one would get caught up in a song which had no distinct chorus/refrain to jog the memory and said I needed the title in there somewhere. So now it's there in 12 harmonized voices.
Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for and watch the video

Green Day Set March Release Date |
Green Day recently released a trailer for the album (watch it below), featuring a 2009 performance of "Know Your Enemy." Billie Joe Armstrong and pals also revealed that Awesome as [Expletive] will come as a two-disc, CD/DVD set. This is the second time Green Day have done this, having released the CD/DVD set Bullet in a Bible in 2005.
A track list has yet to be announced, but "Know Your Enemy" and other 21st Century Breakdown tracks are a good bet. So is the unreleased "Cigarettes," which was played during Green Day's summer 2010 tour, and accompanied Armstrong's first hints about the live album when they were in Denver.

Covers That Beat The Original |
9. "Am I Evil?" - Metallica: Originally by New Wave of British Heavy Metal band Diamond Head, "Am I Evil?" was an underground classic when Metallica grabbed it and made it a live favorite as well as the B-side to "Creeping Death." It also appeared on Metallica's Jump in the Fire EP, The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited, and Garage Inc., and Metallica celebrated the song's influence on the thrash genre when the band, along with Big Four cohorts Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, joined forces to cover the track live during the Sonisphere tour in Europe in 2010. The DVD featuring that performance has now gone double platinum, and a large part of its draw is the history-making performance of this song.
1. "All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix: Some say Bob Dylan's vocal delivery is an acquired taste, but even if you can't quite find peace with his voice, you've got to respect his songwriting abilities. Hendrix was well aware of the power of Dylan's words and music, as evidenced by his cover of "All Along The Watchtower," which in Jimi's hands becomes a bona fide guitar classic.

Slash Talks Hendrix |
"I think the attraction with Jimi was just that he had this uninhibited, fluid guitar style that basically screamed," recalled Slash. "It had this over-the-top sound to it that just kind of drew me in. I think all of my favorite guitar players have a sort of manic quality to them."
He continued, "The thing about Jimi is that he was American born and with a talent from on high, but was discovered by an English crew that brought him over to London where everything was really happening and they appreciated him for what he was. It's sort of funny, because you think of all the really amazing rock guitarists that were coming out at that time basically the English rock guitarists were all a bunch of white kids who wanted to be black and play that kind of guitar, and then there's this black kid coming from America who kind of brings it part and parcel from over there and everybody just stands back and says, 'Wow!' Everyone was tripping out on Jimi, who's really the sort of embodiment of that young lead guitar player, using a lot of distortion, a lot of feedback it must have been interesting being, say, Jeff Beck at the time."

Anniversary of Maurice Gibb's Death |
Maurice was born on December 22, 1949 and was the fourth of five Gibb children, but only just barely. His twin brother Robin was born 35 minutes before him. Maurice (pronounced "Morris") grew up in England in the '50s, until the family moved to Brisbane, Australia in 1958 just after the birth of youngest brother Andy. As a kid, Maurice, along with older brother Barry and twin brother Robin, began singing to make a little extra money. The trio first called themselves the Rattlesnakes and then Wee Johnny Hayes & the Bluecats. They were introduced to a radio DJ, Bill Gates, by Bill Goode, a racetrack promoter who had seen the boys perform at Brisbane's Speedway Circuit. Gates renamed the group the Bee Gees after his and Goode's initials (and not the Brothers Gibb, as some once thought).
The trio did pretty well for themselves in the early '60s in Australia, with the oldest brother Barry getting plenty of attention for his songwriting skills (hence the title of their 1965 debut LP, The Bee Gees Sing and Play 14 Barry Gibb Songs). The year after their debut, the boys decided to move back to the U.K. In advance of their arrival, their father had sent demos to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. He, in turn, passed them along to Robert Stigwood, who helped orchestrate a five-year contract with Polydor Records in England and ATCO Records in the U.S.
