Guns N' Roses Beat Up Fan
(Rock News Desk) Guns N' Roses guitarist DJ Ashba has recounted how he and frontman Axl Rose "literally kicked the sh*t out of" a drunk fan who'd gatecrashed a private party.

The guitarist insists it was "all good" and that the fan in question took the attack in good spirits, later admitting he'd deserved it. "Me and Axl kicked the living sh*t out of this dude," Ashba tells Guitar International. "He snuck into this private aftershow party that was just held for the band and the crew. He was a drunk obnoxious big dude he walks in and he's telling everyone he's our tour manager. We're like, 'What the f**k?'

"He actually punched one of our tour managers. I saw it, so I grabbed the guy by his throat and slammed him up against the wall and I said, 'You need to leave now,' he continues. "I walked him over to the door, but he turned round and punched me in the face. I just started unloading on him. Axl saw him hit me and flipped, and jumped in." more on this story

Wealth of Unreleased Randy Rhoads Material
(Rock News Desk) Original Ozzy Osbourne bassist Bob Daisley has a hoard of unheard recordings featuring the late guitarist Randy Rhoads but he refuses to allow the Osbournes to badger him into a cut-price deal for releasing them.

Daisley accuses the celebrity couple of "rewriting history" and cites the example of his own removal from re-releases of the first two Ozzy solo albums. Manager Sharon Osbourne had his parts and those of drummer Lee Kerslake replaced with new recordings when Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman were republished in 2002.

"When Sharon and Ozzy tell the story, they both try to rewrite history. It's inaccurate and it's not how it happened," The bassist tells BraveWords. "To start, Ozzy said Sharon used to come to the pub with us when we were doing the first record. But she wasn't even there it's a long way to come from LA, as that's where she was living. She had nothing to do with the first record; Ozzy was still married to Thelma at the time, and she used to come to the pub."

But Daisley says fans will have to wait to hear the whole story: "Lee and I were not consulted you're not going to get us in it as the Osbournes are involved. There were four people in that band and it was the chemistry of those four people that made it what it was." more on this story

Pearl Jam Working On New Album
(Gibson) Eddie Vedder said that Pearl Jam are hard at work on their new studio album, which will be the band's tenth. The sessions come in the midst of Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary year as a group, which is being commemorated in re-issues, a Wisconsin festival this summer and an upcoming Cameron Crowe-directed documentary. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Vedder talked about his band and his new ukulele album.

"I just wanted it to be the one sound," the singer said about his new album, Ukulele Songs. "At first it was kind of a joke, and then it became a little bit of a challenge, a puzzle, to see if I could create 11 or 12 songs with just a ukulele. It's like painting with one color. You can really appreciate the subtleties and changes in tone."

With all the hoopla about Pearl Jam's anniversary, Vedder said he's doing his best not to be too nostalgic. "I feel like we have to keep our eyes on the road," he said. "Being nostalgic is like taking an offramp and getting a sandwich and then you get back on the highway. I don't want to be spending the rest of my life at the gas station." more on this story

Slayer Won't Record Without Jeff Hanneman
(Rock News Desk) Slayer will give Jeff Hanneman all the time he needs to recover from an attack of necrotising fasciitis in his arm and have vowed not to start work on a new album until he's ready.

The guitarist looks likely to continue missing tour dates after a suspected spider bite led to him requiring skin grafts and muscle rehabilitation, a process which is still continuing.

He made a surprise appearance during the Big 4 thrash concert in California in April, but only played a handful of tracks. He's been replaced on tour by Exodus guitarist Gary Holt then Cannibal Corpse axeman Pat O'Brian. Slayer frontman Tom Araya tells Billboard: "It was a big deal for him to play in California it was a big deal for us too. We thought it would be a nice surprise for everybody, and also make them aware he's still there. more on this story

Freddie Mercury's Goodbye Video Broadcast
(Gibson) Freddie Mercury's previously unseen, last performance was recently shown by the BBC. The documentary, Queen: Days of Our Lives, included film of the flamboyant frontman preparing for the video of "These are the Days of Our Lives." The unseen Mercury footage was discovered by Rhys Thomas, who co-produced the documentary.

According to the Independent newspaper, Thomas said: "The footage of Freddie in his final video is shocking. He is so frail, he needs two hands to hold a champagne glass. But he knows he is being filmed and wants to show people what he was going through."

Queen guitarist Brian May commented: "At this time, Freddie's becoming weakened by this horrible disease, but he'd throw a couple of vodkas down and prop himself up on the mixing desk and go for it. He actually says a kind of goodbye in the video." more on this story

Scott Weiland Vs John Barleycorn
(Rock News Desk) Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland vows he'll fight off alcohol the way he fought off addiction to harder drugs.

He says he was completely clean for four years until a nightmare year saw him seeking refuge in the bottle but he's convinced he can defeat the demon drink. "I've been clean for nine years. There are some people who can go back to drinking, very few, and some people who can't. It doesn't mean my relationship with it is a healthy one. It's an extra obstacle I plan to get rid of," Weiland tells KROQ. "When I joined Velvet Revolver I'd been completely sober all the way, drugs and alcohol, for four years. Then I had marriage problems. My brother died. My mum almost died of cancer.

"It was too much I tried to put band-aids wherever the pain was leaking from. Booze is everywhere. I'm a sports fan and all the ads are either car commercials or beer commercials. And it worked originally, but it doesn't really work." more on this story

Brian Johnson Pays Tribute To Bon Scott
(RockAAA) More than 30 years after his passing, there remains a lot of love for AC/DC's Bon Scott amongst fans and his fellow band members.

"I think he embodied everything that was fun, everything that was like 'never say die, live life to the full,'" Brian Johnson tells USA Today. "And he had a terrible thing happen to him when he passed on. He wasn't a wild, wild, wild man he was just as wild as the other boys were. He was just unlucky. We've all done stupid, dumb things where we're young, but we got away with it. He didn't. It was just one of them stupid things that shouldn't have happened, and it was accidental and it was stupid. And I just won't have a bad word said against him. We still talk about him like he's a member of the band in the dressing room."

Brian's comments came during a book-signing stop last week in the New York area, as he promotes his new book, "Rockers And Rollers: A Full Throttle Memoir," which details Johnson's history and lifelong love affair with cars. more on this story

"OK. Here's the scoop," Armstrong wrote. "Green Day has been jamming new songs everyday. There's a ton of new songs. The direction is fresh and high energy. Feels great."

Coachella Expanded
(Gibson) Next year, Coachella will take place over two weekends in April instead of the usual one-weekend affair. Organizers have announced the 2012 edition of the music fest will happen on April 13-15 and 20-22 in Indio, California.

Although fans can expect double the days and double the music, they shouldn't prepare for double the amount of acts. According to Spinner.com, Coachella will feature the same lineup on each weekend. Whether everyone will play at the same time and on the same days is yet to be seen.

It has been speculated that the cause for the decision came from the success of hosting Coachella, as usual, this year and then hosting The Big Four (with Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax) show a week later. more on this story

Neal Schon Turned Down Clapton. Was He On Drugs? Yes
(Rock News Desk) Journey guitarist Neal Schon says he's managed to get over his drug addiction issues but admits he was once a "functioning f**k-up".

And the axeman says fears over living a drug-fuelled lifestyle drove him to refuse an invitation to join Eric Clapton's band when he was 15, opting instead to play with Carlos Santana.

"I got the offer from Eric to join Derek and the Dominoes before I got asked to join the Santana band. What a choice, you know?," Schon tells MusicRadar. " I was in the studio with Carlos and we were jamming, when Eric walked in. I was blown away, of course, and I didn't say too much. But we ended up jamming, it was a fun time, and the next day I went back to the studio and there was a note from Eric's people requesting that I go and play with him that night. more on this story

Slayer's Lombardo Downplays Big 4 Rivalry
(Gibson) In a new interview with GeeksofDoom.com, Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo addressed the rumors of rivalry between the Big Four, which also includes Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. He also spoke of progress on a new Slayer album.

Asked about playing as part of the Big Four, Lombardo called it "exciting," saying: "Every time there's more in the pipe for us to play on. I, at least, am looking forward to hanging out with the other guys and doing these festivals that are amazing."

Lombardo also said that he leaves the much talked-about decades of dissension between Big Four band members to the groups' guitarists. "I can't really speak for anybody else, but there was never any rivalry from myself with the bands," said Lombardo. "I never had issues with any of them. I'm sure maybe with other guitar, er, musicians within the bands, maybe, of course there would have been Twenty years God, you can imagine the egos and the arrogance and attitude most musicians carry around with them when they haven't grown up."

When pressed about his reference to rivalry between Big Four guitarists, Lombardo said, "I don't know, I feel like drummers we get along a lot better than guitar players do with each other There's one thing that we all have in common, which all us drummers have, is we like to share what we do. There's no secret. I think guitar players tend to be a little more secretive and a little more passionate. Well, maybe passionate isn't the right word, but they're a little more secretive about their tricks and whatever they do. And 20 years ago, man, I tell ya, it was the same thing." more on this story

AC/DC Shark Bait
(Rock News Desk) Jaws is an AC/DC fan, an Australian tour operator has discovered. Matt Waller of Adventure Bay, based at Port Lincoln, plays the band's classic tracks You Shook Me All Night Long and, appropriately, If You Want Blood to attract great whites during tours.

The giant fish enjoy the music so much they swim up to his clients' viewing cages and try to touch them, so they can be closer to the sound.

Waller made his discovery after shark experts told him their hearing is best between the low range of 20 and 1000 hertz. He tells the Herald Sun: "We know AC/DC's music works best by trial and error I've seen the sharks rub their faces on the cage where the sound is coming from, as if to feel it. more on this story

Rush's Alex Lifeson May Kill Neil Peart... With Laughter
(Rock News Desk) Rush drummer Neil Peart says the bonus-feature dinner filmed for the band's Beyond the Lighted Stage DVD takes place every night before they play and he's worried guitarist Alex Lifeson will choke him to death one evening. But he's never watched the acclaimed movie, and never will, because he doesn't want to relive some of the subjects discussed.

Peart's life disintegrated in 1997 when his daughter died in a car accident, then his wife died of cancer just ten months later. He took time off before deciding to continue with his musical career but he has no desire to watch as the episode is discussed in the movie.

The bonus footage shows Lifeson joking with bandmates Peart and Geddy Lee, with the drummer frequently unable to stop laughing. And he says that's a regular occurrence. "I was dying from laughter at Alex," he recalls. "We keep saying he's going to kill me. I'll choke to death. It happens now: we always have dinner together before the show, then he'll say something and soon I'm choking to death." more on this story

Ex- Van Halen Singers To Rock The Same Stage
(Gibson) While Van Halen are preparing to hit the road in Australia later this year, former singers Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone will share the stage in Tucson, Arizona this weekend.

Cherone's new band, Hurtsmile, will support Sammy Hagar and the Wabos at Casino Del Sol on Saturday night, creating a bill which brings to mind the Sam and Dave tour of 2002 (which was bombastically titled the Song For Song, the Heavyweight Champs of Rock and Roll tour), when David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar co-headlined to large crowds. Cherone made a few appearances during that tour.

After his stint with Van Halen, Cherone formed the band Tribe of Judah with his Extreme bandmates Pat Badger and Mike Mangini (now in Dream Theater) as well as Leo Mellace on guitar and Steve Ferlazzo on keys. Hurtsmile's debut self-titled album was released earlier this year. Meanwhile Extreme are still active, and have begun writing material for their next album. more on this story
