Metallica Team Up With Lou Reed For New Album
The speculation around the mysterious new Metallica project has now ended with the surprising news that the metal veterans have just completed recording a new album with rock legend Lou Reed. Here is what the band had to say:

A few months ago, our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. more on this story

Bob Dylan Snubbed
(Gibson) Rock legend Bob Dylan has been snubbed by officials in London. Dylan had been nominated for the Freedom of Haringey to mark his recent 70th birthday and his long connections to the borough. Dylan has been a frequent visitor to the area of London that Dave Stewart calls home since the 1980s.

The plan was for Dylan to be given his honor when he played the Feis festival in London on the weekend of June 18. Unfortunately, the Borough of Haringey turned Dylan down.

According to the Daily Express, a spokesperson for the council said, "We are grateful for (the) suggestion, but the Freedom of the Borough is usually reserved for individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to life in the borough." more on this story

Shannon Tweed Vs Gene Simmons Round 3
(hennemusic) Following a few days of unbelievable public ball-busting by partner Shannon Tweed during TV interviews to promote the new season of his alleged reality series, KISS bassist Gene Simmons has unloaded about his family issues on Twitter.

Tuesday night's premiere of the first episode of the new season was an ugly affair (pardon the expression), as cameras caught Shannon calling Gene out for his lifestyle after 28 years together. Although Tweed said she's been crying for the past three years, the catalyst was the couple becoming empty nest parents, as daughter Sophie moved out to go to college. It was truly heartbreaking to watch as Gene continued his insane pursuit of making money over being with, and caring for, his family.

With every response, Simmons essentially admits he cares more about himself and money than his family. By all appearances, at least, it appears he's finally telling the truth, revealing what he's been telling the world through years of selfish behavior. That part isn't a surprise.

Shannon crying during the long ride back from taking Sophie to college. The kids coming back a month later to have dinner. The empty place setting at the table. No Gene in sight. Wait, there is a lot more including Gene's surprising Twitter comments but many still wonder... is it real?

Monopoly announced Wednesday that the customized AC/DC Monopoly game is going into production next week and will be available in the US this August.

It's interesting that the popular board game is still cranking out editions, but maybe the customized ones are the way to go in order to attract consumers in the digital age. more on this story

U2 Album On Hold As Spider-Man Finally Gets Off The Ground
(Gibson) The musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is go, after debuting on Broadway 14 June. The music is by Bono and The Edge of U2 and has been a long time arriving. IrishCentral.com said: "U2 haven't written ballads this affecting in years, possibly because they were busy being U2 the rock gods and not U2 the songwriters."

"We learned the hard way about how difficult this stuff is," Bono said on its premier. "We've come through the fire and this, this show is what it needed to be from the beginning. It's really working now. We're really happy with it," added The Edge. However, a full U2 album is now on hold. In 2009, U2 promised a "companion" album to No Line on the Horizon, then a dance-influenced release. But bassist Adam Clayton now says it will be 2012 before there is more genuine U2.

"When the record is finished, we'll know what it is," Clayton told Rolling Stone. The first a "meditative and processional" record dubbed Songs of Ascent was originally due before the end of 2009. The band later proposed an album of club music, recorded with producers Will.I.Am, David Guetta and RedOne and a "straight" rock album, produced by Danger Mouse. "We haven't had time to go back to that material and complete it," Clayton explains. "Everyone was a bit gutted, because I think it would have been great to have got to the end of this year and have a new record out. It's not my favorite decision to put it back, but it was the only sensible decision." more on this story

Trivium Announce New Album
Roadrunner has announced an August 9th release date for Trivium's brand new album In Waves and sent over these comments and details about the standard and deluxe editions.

In the words of vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy, this new album is the culmination: "In Waves to us is Trivium. In Waves is the music, the artwork, the videos and the live show; they are all part of an interconnected whole. There's no question about it, in our eyes, that this is the most complete project we've ever done. We think we've finally made the record that we've always strived to make."

There is a unifying theme to In Waves, but it's not a concept album by any means. Heafy continued, "The album is not a concept record, but there is a certain theme to all of the visuals and sonically and visually it all ties together. We are very proud of what we've accomplished with In Waves and we are excited to share it with everyone." more on this story

Pete Townshend's Quadrophenia Les Paul Fetches A Big Price
(Gibson) A Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Goldtop once owned by The Who's Pete Townshend has raised $50,000 at a music auction in London. It was played by Townshend during the U.S. leg of the band's Quadrophenia tour of 1973 and 1974.

A circa 1972/73 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, serial # 133625, it is one of Townshend's earliest LP Deluxes. "I lent the guitar to my brother-in-law and studio colleague, Jon Astley, in about 197576... When Jon tried to return it, I decided to give it to him," said Townshend.

In the accompanying letter of autheticity, Townshend wrote: "This Les Paul Deluxe guitar was originally sold to me by Bob Heil for the American tour of Quadrophenia in 1973. The majority of these early Les Pauls were in a cherry sunburst finish, but a few were the more distinctive "Gold Top." more on this story

Gates Soundtrack To Benefit Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund
The soundtrack to the graphic novel Gates will be released digitally on July 19, 2011 with all net proceeds being donated to the Ronnie James Dio "Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund."

Friend Slash Lover sent over word about the soundtrack and will be contributing the single "Where Have I Been All My Life" off their debut EP As American As Ones and Zeros along with new material they are currently writing for inclusion in the soundtrack series to Gates.

Gates is a graphic novel written and illustrated by good friend and Friend Slash Lover fan, Hal Hefner. "Hal and I are on the same page with a lot of the issues he writes about, so including one of our songs on the Gates soundtrack was a perfect fit. Thematically it works, plus the new recordings are a lot heavier and more energetic. We're combining a live rock band feel with some pulsing synth production techniques. It has elements that might remind you of AC/DC, Silversun Pickups and a little MGMT all mixed together," comments Friend Slash Lover songsmith and front man Josh Mintz. more on this story

Steven Adler Reveals Suicide Attempts
(Rock News Desk) Former Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler has revealed he tried to commit suicide twice as he struggled with drug addiction issues. And to mark the end of the worst chapter of his life he published a book about his experiences, read it then threw it in a fire.

Adler, 46, became the first member of GnR's classic lineup to leave the band when he was fired in 1990 over his inability to record because of his heroin addiction.

Since then he's spent many years trying to clean himself up but now says the pressure led him to attempt taking his own life on two separate occasions. Adler tells Rukus magazine: "You'd think it's easy to do, but let me tell you: it's not easy. Both times I tried killing myself I took 100 valium, drank a big bottle of Jagermeister and shot up three quarters of a gram of heroin." more on this story

Zenith Myth is 27 year-old Mike Edwards from Los Angeles, California. It was there that Zenith Myth was realized.

Edwards also managed to enroll some his close friends to play on the record including Paul D'Amour (Tool), Melissa Auf der Maur (Hole, Smashing Pumpkins), Mike Bloom (Julian Casablancas), Sam Goldberg (Broken Social Scene), and Meshell Ndegeocello. more on this story

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine Says People Don't Really Know His Relationship With Lars
(Gibson) Megadeth main man Dave Mustaine has been talking about his relationship with Metallica and making musical decisions since finding Christianity.

According to Blabbermouth, he has been forced to re-consider the subject matter of some songs. "It's what the subject matter's about. I've been struggling with that. For example, 'Anarchy in the U.K.' is a song I really don't like playing because it starts off and says 'I am an Antichrist.' Well, I'm not an antichrist. Not only am I not it, I don't want to be it. I won't even be one of them. And as far as 'The Conjuring' ... it actually has the components of a hex in it and when I wrote the song it was cool and it was vogue to be into black magic and the dark side and stuff like that so it was really cool to have lines from a hex in it. But looking back now being a dad, being a responsible person, being a musician who has influenced a lot of lives very positively I look at it and think, 'I don't know if I would play that live.'"

Mustaine also talked about his friendship with Metallica's Lars Ulrich who wrote liner notes for Mustaine's Peace Sells re-issue. "I was really touched. See, it just goes to show you that the relationship that Lars and I really have had over the years was private, and people really did not know what it was about." more on this story

Anniversary of the Monterey Pop Festival
(Gibson) In Carmel, California on June 16, 1967, the Summer of Love kicked off with one of the most astounding pop festivals of all time. Preceding the better-known Woodstock by two years, the Monterey International Pop Festival remains the archetypal freewheeling hippie festival, untainted by the violence or cynicism that would spoil later attempts to capture the magic of Monterey.

Mimicking some of the all-weekend jams put on by San Francisco bands like Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead, Monterey put the music first. Jefferson Airplane's Paul Kantner told Carmel Magazine that the "eclectic idea... made [Monterey Pop] a great show. That whole weekend was just extraordinary." He continued, "Monterey Pop exuded a really friendly vibe... everyone liked each other and supported each other. So much was going on you could barely contain it all. We were in the middle of this huge rumbling of experiences...full of exciting things. We managed to play our music on acid, and it didn't seem to inflict anything negative."

The festival, put on by record producer Lou Adler and John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, was filmed by rock and roll documentary king D.A. Pennebaker. The lineup was remarkable: The Who, Simon & Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Steve Miller Band, The Animals, Buffalo Springfield, Booker T. and the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, The Mamas & the Papas, Ravi Shankar, The Association, Big Brother and The Holding Company, Johnny Rivers, Lou Rawls, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, Laura Nyro, The Blues Project, Country Joe & The Fish, Al Kooper, Electric Flag, The Butterfield Blues Band, The Paupers and Hugh Masekela. more on this story

Glasvegas Singer Prefers Not To Go Home
(Gibson) Glasvegas singer James Allan, who spends a lot of time on the road, opts to stay at a hotel when he's home in Glasgow. According to the Daily Express, the Glasgow-born rock star has a home in the city but likes to check into the local Radisson hotel when he's back in Glasgow.

He told the Daily Record: "When I come back to Glasgow, I live in the hotel full-time. It is a bizarre existence, but the good thing is I don't allow myself to be deceived into living any kind of normal existence. If I went back home and my dog was running around and there was dinner on the table, it would confuse my tiny brain.

"You get your bed made for you. I know it is like something Elizabeth Taylor would have done. I used to walk past hotels and wonder who stayed there. Now I can cherish the moment, but let momentum take me wherever it is going to take me." more on this story

Singled Out: Eli Cook's Deathrattle
Today Blues rock guitarist Eli Cook tells us about "Deathrattle" from his brand new album "Ace, Jack and King". Here is the story:

"Deathrattle", the first song on my new album, Ace, Jack and King, is one of the most interesting tracks. The lyrics and music are all original, but, if I were to sing the song with just hand claps backing me and add a chorus of male singers with a single mic, it would become indistinguishable from all the great old field hollers and work songs recorded in the early 20th century. The earthy, vital feel of that music is what I try to capture in my own.

At the end of the album, my electric rock version of the same tune is exemplary of a style I have been developing over the years--taking very old sounding blues-based lyrics and melodies and arranging them in contemporary and usually heavy ways...without compromising the authentic feel and soul of the original music that is the inspiration for my own song.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
