The Day in Rock Digest for 03/04/11: Download Festival booker Andy Copping has branded the backlash over his announcement of Def Leppard as final headliner for the festival as 'unjustified' but admits the list of classic rock bands he considers big enough to headline the main stage one day every year is 'wearing a bit thin.' He also addressed why he skipped over other big names acts like Metallica. Tommy Lee's Wrong: Rob Zombie Not Directing Motley Crue Movie
(Gibson) It was widely reported this week that Rob Zombie would be directing the film version of Motley Crue's memoir, The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band. Zombie now says those reports are untrue.

"No, I'm not doing the Motley Crue movie," Zombie told Undercover.fm, in a video interview set to be published next week. "I don't know where that [rumor] came from."

The misinformation apparently originated in an interview with Crue's Tommy Lee, published on Billboard.com. Lee hinted that newly-written Motley Crue material might be incorporated into the bio-pic, which, Billboard stated, is "on track with Rob Zombie as its director." more on this story

25th Anniversary of Metallica's Master of Puppets
(Gibson) 25 years ago yesterday (March 3, 1986) Metallica unleashed "Master Of Puppets" on the world. Mike Meyer at the Phoenix New Times has just launched a 10-part series on the best thrash metal albums of 1986, starting with Puppets.

Meyer connected with producer Flemming Rasmussen to discuss Metallica's masterpiece. PNT: You produced three consecutive Metallica albums - Ride the Lightning, Puppets and Justice - but they have three distinctly different sounds. Was that a conscious decision by you and the band?

FR: Yes. The difference between Ride and Master is evolution, as Master is a perfection of the sound we started to evolve on Ride. And in my opinion, we did really master it on Master. That album sounds so good. When I got onto the Justice album, they were a month into the session, and it was a new studio, etc., so we decided on a more up-front and dry sound. As for the mix, they had already hired someone else to do this, so I had no say in that. But it's still a classic metal album, and the sound has inspired a whole new generation of metal bands. more on this story

Bumblefoot Talks Original Guns N' Roses Reunion
(Gibson) Guns N' Roses guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal told Radio Metal that he's not at all annoyed by fans wanting to see a reunion of the "classic" GN'R lineup with Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan and Steven Adler. His only request: he wants to be there.

"If a reunion ever happens, I would hope that they would give me some free passes so that me and my wife could go [laughs]," he said. "You know, that doesn't bother me. I have no problems with anybody. I mean I just did a signing last weekend with Duff!

"So does it bother me that people want a reunion? No! You know what? I love KISS, I love a whole [expletive] of bands and if there was a lineup that did an album that I totally loved, I would love to go see that lineup do those songs. It's normal. And it doesn't mean that I hate what's going on now." His thoughts on Axl and being in the band

Singled Out: Hot Head Show
For some music is in their blood- Just ask Hot Head Show's frontman Jordan Copeland, son of Stewart Copeland of The Police. Today Jordan tells us about their brand new debut double A-side single 'Bummer/Hotel Room'. Here are the stories:

"Bummer" actually started life as a Johnny Cash song. I was playing along with I think probably the Folsom Prison album, and this rhythm arrived in my hands. As is often the way, that initial idea was a long way from both the song that inspired it and the song it became. The body of the song was pretty much done by that afternoon, but that bass melody which opens and closes the song came much later, appeared in my head one night on the tube. Which is also where most Hot Head Show lyrics get written. There's something about riding the tube.

"Hotel Room" was a bit different - I wrote most of that song pacing around a room in Vancouver without a guitar. It's the only time I've come up with a melody and lyrics first, and written the chords and bass later. The other thing about that tune is that the bass melody for the verse is the same as the vocal melody in the chorus, the idea being that when you hear the chorus for the first time, you're already familiar with the melody. It could be that it never made any difference to anyone's experience of the song, but that was one of the ideas things grew from.

Lately I've been running with the theory that the best way to start a good song is with a bad idea. When I start out with an idea I like, the song's development will inevitably be hampered by an instinct-skewing loyalty to that first idea. If I start out with an idea that's lame enough to easily think of as a placeholder, then new ideas tend to sprout more naturally. I think it's important to be able to cheerfully kill some of your babies.

As for the Bummer Video - that started as an editing concept. I do a lot of work as a video editor, and for a while I'd been looking for an excuse to experiment with Rhythmadelic Micromontage techniques. It was Vaughn's idea (our Lead Bass player) to use girls with their boobs out. Worked out pretty good I think.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, check out the video which includes reworking of vintage Russ Meyer footage right here!

The Day The Rolling Stones Unintentionally Topped the Chart
On this day in 1967, The Rolling Stones were on top of the American singles chart with "Ruby Tuesday," the group's fourth U.S. no. 1 single. "Let's Spend the Night Together" was the original A-side but after radio stations banned the song, "Tuesday" became the plug side. Gibson takes a look back:

1967 certainly was the year for double A-sides. The Beatles put out two of the finest tracks of their illustrious career on "Strawberry Fields Forever"/"Penny Lane"only to see them stall at #2 in the U.K. behind Engelbert Humperdinck's "Please Release Me." The Rolling Stones' big double, "Let's Spend the Night Together"/"Ruby Tuesday" had a rockier road to travel, but somehow managed to make it to the top of the charts sort of.

"Let's Spend the Night Together" was a risqu song for its time, an overt invitation to carnal relations. The track was powered by guest pianist Jack Nitzsche and a kickin' rhythm track led by Charlie Watts. But the spotlight really shines on Jagger, who is in full rooster mode, strutting and preening, letting the listener know he means it when he says, "I'll satisfy your every need/And now I know you will satisfy me." more on this story

Photos of Cliff Burton's First Rehearsal With Metallica in New Photo Book
(Submitted) San Francisco Bay Area metal photographers Brian Lew (Whiplash fanzine) and Harald "O." Oimoen (D.R.I.) have joined forces to create the large-format hardcover photo collection Murder In The Front Row: Bay Area Bangers and the Birth of Thrash Metal.

Coming this fall from Bazillion Points Books, this intense look at early hardcore headbangers features some of the first photos of the "Big Four" and their extended family of thrash metal bands. With hundreds of candid, live, and studio shots, Lew and Oimoen celebrate the unique wild-eyed spirit and atmosphere of the historic S.F. Bay Area heavy metal scene: pinpointing clubs (The Old Waldorf, The Stone, Ruthie's Inn, The Omni); hangouts (The Record Vault, the infamous Metallica Mansion); and beloved local figures like fearless stage diver Toby Rage, manager Debbie Abono, and the unrivaled metal ringmaster Paul Baloff of Exodus.

Among the jaw-dropping moments in heavy metal history on display: Cliff Burton's first rehearsal with Dave Mustaine-era Metallica; Kerry King of Slayer performing with early Megadeth; Metallica and Slayer's first Bay Area shows; the first meeting of Slayer and Metallica; original uncropped prints of Possessed's blood-spattered "Seven Churches" band photo shoot; some of the earliest photos of Vio-lence and Death Angel; Testament (then called Legacy) dressed in religious stage outfits; the crazed front row faces from legendary Ruthie's Inn; and Metallica's triumphant takeover of Day on the Green in 1985.

Master Denied Entry Into The US
Master were scheduled to kick off their U.S. headlining tour earlier this week with support from Lightning Swords Of Death and Mobile Deathcamp, but were denied entry into the country and forced to return to the Czech Republic.

Said Master mainman Paul Speckmann in a statement: "We arrived Tuesday morning in Holland and after intense questioning we proceeded to the eye and body scan machine. Along with the other passengers, we proceeded to the plane. We arrived in Detroit and went to passport control. I waited for about two hours for any word on the guys. The police came to explain that the visa waiver program didn't apply to musicians.

" So they sent me to customs and proceeded to tear apart everything and sent me on my way. I waited for six hours to get on another airplane and return to Europe. Thankfully the lady at the Delta checkout counter was very helpful and confirmed that the guys would be on the next plane in the evening and I could return with them. The guys were escorted to the plane by four police officers and returned their passports when we arrived in Amsterdam. Since when are musicians and terrorists in the same category?" more on this story
