On this day in 1949, RCA Victor introduced the 45rpm single record that had been in development since 1940. The 7" disc was designed to compete with the Long Playing record introduced by Columbia a year earlier. Advertisements for new record players boasted that with 45rpm records, the listener could hear up to ten records with speedy, silent, hardly noticeable changes.

Singled Out: Unwritten Law - Special 3 Song Edition
Today we have a special edition of Singled Out where Dylan Thomas Howard from Unwritten Law tells us about three songs from their brand new album "Swan," which hit stores this week. Here are the stories:

"Starship And Apocalypse" - It was one of the first songs to get recorded when I went in and started tracking drums back in June 2009. PK then laid down the baddest bassline, think U2 with a Sid Vicious sensibility. Steve cut the sickest guitars. Then Scott came in and laced the track with a little bit of sugar and spice. When you hear it you know its a banger and that's why it's the first single off the new record. It's got something for everybody. It brings the rock in the choruses and the sex in the verses, what more could you ask for.

"Dark Days" - What do you get when you mix a dirty skank groove, a smashing chorus, and some bridge vocals more flaming than Freddie Mercury? Dark Days. It's one of my favorites because its relentless front to back. From the instrumentation to the lyrics, it's a song that's REAL and doesn't pull any punches. Huge guitars, the dirtiest of dirt-nasty bass lines, signature beats, and hooks so legit that Satan himself couldn't even deliver if you sold him your soul.

"Chicken (Ready To Go)" - This one is another that was around from the first batch of songs. PK sent out his original demo to us all and we had no choice but to get down to the sickest Korean metal riffage EVER. Big and anthemic from top to bottom. Undeniable grooves mixed with two of the baddest vocalists EVER. I remember being so stoked when Scott told me that he got Del The Funkee Homo Sapien to thrown down on the verses. He said he came over late one night with some chicken and waffles, heard the track and said, 'I wanna rap on that s***!' END.OF.STORY.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the songs, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

KISS Launch World's First Picture Condoms
The newest KISS Kondoms will be the world's first FDA-approved "Picture Condoms" featuring a full color image right on the latex. Here is the official word:

Originally introduced in 2002 by Condomania, KISS Kondoms were the first to display a color photographic image of a celebrity on both the condom wrapper and box. The innovation continues now on a whole new level, featuring an image of Gene Simmons' iconic fully extended tongue running down the length of the latex condom. "Our decision to feature Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and the KISS brand on these revolutionary condoms was a no-brainer considering Gene and Paul's worldwide legacy as entertainment icons and pioneers," said Chris Panucci, CEO of Graphic Armor.

Adam Glickman, CEO of Condomania, remarks, "I can think of no better way to introduce what is essentially advertising on condoms. Gene, Paul and KISS have a well-documented history of breaking new ground in marketing. With Gene's tongue leading the way once again, I am confident we are about to see an explosion of marketing messages and logos displayed on millions of condoms in action." more on this story

The First Time Hendrix Set His Guitar on Fire
(Gibson) On this day in 1967 Jimi Hendrix sets fire to his guitar live on stage for the first time. Gibson takes a look back: It was the spring of 1967 and Jimi Hendrix, while the darling of London's rock and roll jet set, still hadn't broken through to the mainstream when he embarked on his first U.K. tour on this day in 1967.

Crazy as it may seem in hindsight, Hendrix was due to open for Cat Stevens, Engelbert Humperdinck and The Walker Brothers. Then again, everything had happened so fast that while London's hipsters and musician set knew all about Hendrix's prowess, the public barely had been introduced to this new American guitar genius.

It was the fall of 1966 when Chas Chandler, on a tip from Keith Richards, brought Hendrix to England where he played the hippest clubs in London, picking up rave reviews form his peers. Management found him a flat in Montagu Square (it belonged to Ringo Starr) and that was his base for this vital period in developing as a showman, as much as a guitarist. more on this story

"He said they showed him the room and the bloke asked, 'Is there anything you'd like to change, sir?' He said, 'Yeah. That [expletive] poster. I want another room,' so they moved him."

Brand is not unfamiliar with the rock and roll world. He's good friends with Noel Gallagher, on whom he says he partly based his rock star character in the movie Get Him to the Greek more on this story
