Rock is Dead?
Last week we learned from Nielsen SoundScan that rock remains the best selling genre of music and this week an 80s rocker declares the genre dead. RockAAA reports: Twisted Sister guitarist Jay Jay French reckons rock stars have been replaced as kid's musical idols by hip-hop and dance musicians and he says rock is all but dead on both sides of the Atlantic.

French also believes it is the older generation who are keeping rock music alive but he hopes it is just a temporary cycle for the genre. In an interview with Rockoverdose.gr in Greece he said:

"In the United States it's dead. There are almost no rock bands anymore on the charts if you look. Foo Fighters maybe once in a while but the fact is the heavy rock scene is completely dead from a commercial stance as the charts are all dance music. more on this story

Die Krupps have been forced to pull out of their upcoming tour with Front Line Assembly due to complications with the band's U.S. work permits - a situation that was completely out of the band's hands, and that they had absolutely no control over. "I am very upset about it states front man Jurgen Engler. "We were really looking forward to finally playing for our U.S. fans again after a long time, before the new studio album comes out. According to an interview with the Daily Mail, Diamond was considered for the Robert De Niro role in Taxi Driver. "I wasn't actually offered the role," he said. "If we were to say, 'Let's get this record out by the fall,' I think it would put a lot of pressure on us and the quality would at some point suffer," Thayil told Reuters. "And the more we enjoy it, the more our fans should end up enjoying it."

The guitarist went on to talk about the band's break-up in the late '90s. He said that the four members preserved their friendships following the split and would meet up at concerts or each other's homes. more on this story

Unedited Controversial Pre-Led Zeppelin Recording Goes Online
(The Metal Den) It's not quite their official debut but TMD has obtained the complete and unedited medley from the first ever commercial music release that featured all four members of what would soon be known as Led Zeppelin.

In September of 1968, well before they became a rock n roll legends, American singer P.J. Proby recruited Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham to perform on his studio album entitled Three Week Hero. Plant handled the harmonica as his other band mates performed on their instruments. This is the debut for this unedited version on Youtube, others posted online have edited out the first minute and a half. For the sake of historical preservation, TMD has chosen to provide the original track just as it was featured on the original release.

The song is a controversial one because of Proby's usage of the 'N' word, so sensitive listeners have been forewarned about its content. Beyond that, the listener will be treated to a very special moment when a young bunch of English rock musicians were getting poised to start a rock n roll revolution. Check it out here

Alice Cooper's New Nightmare
(Gibson) Alice Cooper is 63, loves to play golf and is looking forward to grandchildren. But he is not done with rock 'n' roll horror just yet. He is working on a sequel to his best-selling 1975 solo album Welcome to My Nightmare with three guitar players.

"What would Alice's nightmare be 35 years later?" Cooper asked the Vancouver Sun. "Well, there's technology. Alice is a technotard. Disco is still a big enemy of his, so disco would be in there. But I allowed this album to have a great sense of humor, even though there's some very, very dark moments."

Cooper born Vincent Damon Furnier is working again with producer Bob Ezrin. The original Nightmare album was co-written with Ezrin. Recorded with most of the original band members, the forthcoming record has a vintage '70s sound, and is "as good if not better than the original," according to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. more on this story

AC/DC Singer Welcomes Another Tour
(Gibson) AC/DC continue to make the press rounds following the release of the new DVD, Live at River Plate. With their last tour, in support of the Black Ice album, finishing as the third most successful tour of all time, the group find themselves answering a bevy of questions about when they're going to hit the road again.

"I would welcome another tour, just to get out there," singer Brian Johnson told Absolute Radio. "I mean, if they said, 'Another two years' I might blanch a bit, but I think everybody in the band is fit, well prepared, and they've still got it."

Johnson said the monotony of touring is well offset by the thrill of playing onstage. "The travelling is tedious, you know, but the onstage bit, getting on the stage, that's the fun bit, you know, that's what you're getting out for." more on this story

How Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience Picked Songs
(hennemusic) Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience are on the road this month for their second tour of North America, following the success of their 2010 trek.

Bonham spoke with Ultimate Guitar.com recently about how he selected songs for the LZE show. "Well, for me, the song choices had to be everything that meant something to me," said Jason. "From my first memory of hearing Zeppelin which was "Your Time is Going to Come." The song is in the show, all my life from the first moment I ever heard that song it stood out to me, since as a child I was terrified of church organists (re the song intro). Other key early memories of Led Zeppelin for me was the black and white TV Danish TV special which included, 'Babe I'm Going to Leave You.' That was a key moment and I always thought 'Lemon Song' was a key moment for me from the early days of Zeppelin.

"And then also just when (Joey) said to me, what are your two favorite Led Zeppelin songs if there's two? And I said, well there is always going to be two, there's number one which is "Kashmir" and "The Rain Song." And while I didn't do "The Rain Song" on the last tour and this time around, I never really imagined this thing to be taken in as well as it has been to be honest. But since we're in this position now where we can go out there with our heads held high, I wanted to make sure that this time we have some of the later Zeppelin." Singled Out: The Alumni's Detroit
Today Brendan O'Byrne from The Alumni tells us about "Detroit" from their new EP "No Order," and forthcoming album "Education". Here is the story:

"Detroit" is the first single off our album "Education." Originally written and demo'd as a slow ballad, the vibe of the original demo just wasn't feeling right. I really can't explain the feeling we had, but while writing, we would just look at each other and know to try a different approach. Ultimately, we would run into the proverbial "brick wall" of songwriting. We believe that when running into this wall on every direction you take with a song, it is best to scrap it and move on. This keeps our minds positive and productive. Our lead singer, Andrew, experimented with faster tempos and time signatures creating different moods and feels, It evolved many times becoming something completely different every time, the only constant component was the chord progression. The lyrics, melody, beat and bass all had changed way too many times.

The demo for Detroit was almost exactly what you hear on the recording. We tracked it in our apartment using Cubase 5 and Native Instuments Elektrik Keys. Because the song had evolved into a bit of a Motown shuffle, we decided to use the sounds of the 60's and 70's, probably the most identifiable is the Wurlitzer 200a electric piano. We used a synthetic plugin for our wurly sound on the demo, but ultimately picked up a used one for the record (from Detroit of all places) We just had drums, bass, keyboard, and a vocal track, we thought it sounded great and even considered releasing the demo on the album. Like most of the songs we demo'd, we had no intention of putting any guitar in. As you might imagine, this lead to some arguments about the role of the guitar in this album. However, once in the studio, we noticed the gaps that it would leave. So our producer, Jim Wirt, probably spent 2 days perfecting the right guitar tone for this song. It turned out to be the simplest: A '59 Les Paul through a vintage Vox AC30. It gave us a tone very similar, I thought, to the guitar in "Let it Be", very fat and ambient, not too heavy, layered and overdriven, sounding more like a horn section than a guitar. Recording sessions for "Detroit" (recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto, ON) like other sessions for "Education", were very short. Our creative process was over, the parts were written (minus the guitars), so it was only a matter of laying them down, deciding which parts to use and adding a bit of color and finishing touches courtesy of Jim.

"Detroit" had evolved so much, yet the theme of this song has never changed. It is about the interesting past that the city has experienced, including the Detroit Riots of 1967, the incredible music born out of Motown Records (The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder) and the economic ups and downs that has been a part of its culture for a very long time. It carries a message of hope and is from the perspective of people who are on the outside looking in.

As usual, by the end, it was one of the least favorite songs on the record by the band because it had been creatively re done so many times, yet our fans seem to identify with it the most.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Queensryche Promise Very Listenable New Record
(hennemusic) Queensryche mark their 30th anniversary with the release their 12th studio album, "Dedicated To Chaos," on June 28.

The album was recorded in the group's hometown and produced by Kelly Gray. "It's kind of like an 'Empire' record set 25 years in the future," singer Geoff Tate recently told Paul Anthony of U.K.'s Rock Radio.

"It's a very listenable record, I think. I think people will find it interesting to listen to on headphones, especially. There's a lot going on with it. And there's definitely an emphasis on the rhythm section. Eddie [Jackson, bass] and Scott [Rockenfield, drums] have written a lot of the songs on this particular record, so it really showcases what they do, which is something very special. This record is definitely a boundary-pusher in a lot of respects, I think. It's always difficult to describe music; it's better to experience it. So I'll let people hear it and make up their own minds." more on this story

John Lennon's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Handwritten Lyrics Fetches Major Cash
(Gibson) John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for The Beatles' 1967 song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" have been sold at auction for more than $237,000 in Los Angeles, according to Spinner.com.

The lyrics are on a single sheet, and feature the opening lyrics for the track and a rough sketch of four people in a room with windows draped in curtains. The sheet also includes the opening lines to another Beatles tune "She's Leaving Home."

The Beatles' song featured on the 1967 Beatles album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but has long been the subject of argument. For years, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" has been regarded as a reference to LSD, based on its mercurial lyrics and the fact that the words "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" spell out the initials of the drug within its title. British woman Lucy Vodden, who died in 2009, claimed in 2007 that she was the inspiration for the song. more on this story

Derek Trucks Reflects on Duane Allman's Legacy
(Gibson) Talking to Gibson.com about his new album Revelator, the Allman Brothers Band guitarist and solo artist Derek Trucks offered up his opinion of the late great Duane Allman.

"Duane is a seminal figure like Charlie Christian or Wes Montgomery a guy who came along at exactly the point where there was a major change in music, and fell into the center of it," Trucks said.

"For electric slide you've gotta go back to Elmore James, and Duane was really that next step. He had learned the basics and was playing with some of the best R&B musicians in the world in the studio, and at the same time was listening to Miles Davis' [early fusion masterpiece] Bitches Brew and Jimi Hendrix. He had a lot of influences, but Duane was the first guy to take that Elmore sound and crack it wide open in a way that opened the door to his sound for guitar players and for people in general. And when somebody comes along and takes what comes before them and moves it ahead the way Duane did, the bar is set."

Old 97's The Dallas Mavericks' Good-Luck Charm?
(Gibson) The Old 97's might be the Dallas Mavericks' good-luck charm. Earlier this season, the country-rockers were part of Old 97's Day with the Mavericks, during which they played a pre-game concert and frontman Rhett Miller sang the National Anthem.

"I'm not going to take credit for it ... [but] they've been great ever since," Miller told ESPN.com's Page 2. The singer-guitarist is a huge Dallas sports fan, especially of the Mavericks. "It's a mix of live recordings done in the studio, acoustic demos and some out takes in order to cover the musical transition between 'Children of Saturn' and the new studio album due out later this year," explains band leader Michael Moore.

"I'm very excited about the new album, it will show how the new line-up has evolved. I'm struggling to improve my craft and expand my musical eclecticism." more on this story
