The Mars Volta Break Up
It appears that The Mars Volta hiatus has turned into a break up with frontman Cedric Zavala announcing online that he is done with the group.

Zavala posted a series of messages on his Twitter accounting announcing that he has parted ways with the group and calling the band's hiatus an insult to fans.

Here are some of the postings he made: "Thank u 2 all VOLTA fans u deserved more especially after the way u rooted for us on this album. I tried my hardest to keep it going

"But Bosnian Rainbows was what we all got instead. I can't sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta.

"I honestly thank all of you for buying our records and coming to our shows. You guys were a blast to play in front of" more on this story

Guns N' Roses Are Late Over Safety Concerns?
(hennemusic) Guns N' Roses guitarist DJ Ashba has offered up the latest excuse for the band's notorious concert tardiness.

"We have a huge rig and pyrotechnics so often it's the case of fitting all that into the venue," Ashba tells Yahoo! 7 News. "Our number one priority is to make the shows safe."

Ashba says he understands why fans have resorted to bottling the stage or venting their anger on social media. "That kills us as a band because we're not doing any of this on purpose," he explains. "Our main goal is to go and give the fans a show they will never forget and we understand how expensive tickets are. We take that into account and when we do hit the stage it's almost impossible to get us off."

Ashba insists the delays have been caused by production issues rather than arrogance on behalf of leader Axl Rose, explaining a team of 100 people is co-coordinating the show from backstage. more on this story

Aerosmith Team With Carrie Underwood For New Single
(hennemusic) Aerosmith are kicking off 2013 with the release of a new single from their latest album, "Music From Another Dimesnion." "Can't Stop Lovin' You" features a duet with Steven Tyler and country star and American Idol Carrie Underwood.

The decision to ask Underwood to sing on the track and enhance the country flavorings was natural. Tyler had previously duetted on a mash-up of Carrie's hit "Undo It" and Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" at the 46th Annual Academy of Country Awards in 2011. In early 2012, the two were also paired for a CMT Crossroads special.

In an interview with Rolling Stone.com about the song, Tyler said, "I sang it a little country and westernand all along we thought, should we get someone inIt was last-minute. She (Carrie) was in town doing something. I called her up and she said, 'I'm leaving tomorrow.' And I said, 'Can you come over tonight?' I called Joe (Perry) up, and the rest is history. She just did it. It really does work." more on this story

Stereophonics Will Attempt To Record Beatles Album In 12 Hours
(Radio.com) Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and rock group The Stereophonics are among the artists participating in a marathon recording session in an attempt to recreate The Beatles' debut album Please Please Me within 12 hours; that's how much time it took the Fab Four to record the album five decades ago.

The challenge will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 on Feb. 11 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic album's recording session. It will also be filmed for a BBC 4 special 12 Hours To Please Me airing on Feb. 15, according to BBC News. Hucknall, along with other musicians, will record in Abbey Road Studios where the original album was made, and have just the 12-hour time frame to record all of the songs.

BBC Radio 2 DJs Stuart Maconie and Jo Whiley will host the live events, which will also feature appearances by engineer Richard Langham, who worked on the original album, and Beatles press officer Tony Barrow. more on this story

Brian Wilson Reuniting With Beach Boys Bandmates For Concert
(Radio.com) Brian Wilson has just announced, via his website, an upcoming concert at the Fraze Pavilion in Kettering, Ohio, on July 25. Interestingly, the post also mentions that "special guests Al Jardine and David Marks will be performing with Brian."

Wilson, Jardine and Marks, of course, were part of last year's Beach Boys reunion tour. But Mike Love owns the license to the group's name, and late last year, he announced that the reunion tour had run its course, and that the group would continue with its pre-reunion incarnation.

Wilson, Marks and Jardine expressed disappointment with that development, with Jardine going so far to start a Facebook petition to get Love to change his mind (he didn't). more on this story

Paramore Discuss New Album
(Radio.com) Paramore may have had some line-up changes, some ups-and-downs, and spent a lot of time in their pajamas in the last two years but "Now" lead vocalist Hayley Williams, bassist Jeremy Davis, and guitarist Taylor York finally feel like their newly-energized music career and upcoming self-titled album is "real."

"Now that we're back at KROQ; it's official," said Williams in an interview with Kevin & Bean. "It kind of feels like we just joined this band and we're starting from scratch. It's really nice. I don't think a lot of bands get that chance, that feeling, you know? We've been playing music for what, almost ten years together, and this feels like day one."

For some, there were doubts that Paramore would come back after their extended hiatus and interpersonal drama, but Williams said that they "held it together all right" and were humbled and realistic about the future. They kept in mind that even bands with the best energy have off days.

"It was definitely hard at first, but we had to keep in our minds, 'Move forward. Move forward. Move forward.'" Part of the way Paramore moved forward was to make a grand statement with the bold choice of using their name as an album title. While most bands do that on their first album, Paramore did that on their fourth to showcase their new beginning.

With singles like "Now," it's clear that their sound is as fresh as their perspective. "There needs to be an evolutions," joked Williams. "So, now it's seventeen tracks of dubstep." more.

Corey Taylor Excited About Cheap Trick and Nirvana Jam
(Radio.com) This past Friday night (January 18), Corey Taylor made the following announcement from the stage at Park City Live in Utah: "This is the craziest f***in' night of my life."

That's quite a statement from a guy known for dressing up in a boiler suit, donning a mask that looks like horror film character Leatherface and bellowing vocals on songs titled "The Heretic Anthem" and "Pulse Of The Maggots."

But the Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman was, for sure, in unusual surroundings Friday, performing Cheap Trick covers, accompanied by Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen, along with Nirvana alumni Krist Novoselic (bass), Dave Grohl (drums) and Pat Smear (guitar). The show was part of the celebration around the Grohl-directed documentary, Sound City, following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

Taylor tells Radio.com that he's still digesting the experience. "How did that happen? Somebody please explain that to me! That was awesome though. Being able to get up with Rick Nielsen and basically Nirvana. Talk about a fanboy-gasm! I was just up there going, 'What am I doing here?' But we had a great time. It re-introduced my love for Cheap Trick. I really went deep in the catalog. I thought, 'This band, they don't get enough credit.'" Watch the interview.

Metal Star Doro Pesch Lost Home in Hurricane Sandy
(Classic Rock) Doro Pesch is one of the thousands of New York residents who lost her home in Hurricane Sandy, but she knows she can live without her possessions.

In fact, she says, she's only sorry that the freak weather conditions destroyed so many gifts sent to her by fans.

Pesch had already suffered severe damage to her apartment when Hurricane Irene hit in 2011. But when Sandy struck last October and caused over $60bn of damage, her home and belongings were wiped out.

"I've been in New York since 1987 and nothing ever happened and now twice, it is just unbelievable." She tells Legendary Rock Interviews. "To me though, none of those things are what's important. I can still sing and play music and enjoy the time with fans, those are the real riches in life. I don't need material stuff, although the apartment was nice." more on this story

Wilko Johnson Shares His Reaction To Terminal Cancer News
(Classic Rock) Wilko Johnson didn't get upset when he was told he had terminal cancer. In fact, he soon started to feel "euphoric" and he says that feeling hasn't worn off.

The former Dr Feelgood guitarist announced earlier this month that he has months to live. Instead of opting for chemotherapy, which will only extend his life for a few more months, he's decided to make one more album and play a series of farewell shows.

Johnson tells The Times: "I had the analysis just before Christmas. I don't know if the guy was an expert in telling people bad news, but he said those words: 'You've got cancer,' and I was absolutely calm. I didn't freak out at all."

He says he's been "a miserable bugger" for most of his life but that's faded away despite the news. "I began to feel almost euphoric and the feeling hasn't worn off," he says. "I realise that all the things I usually worry about don't matter." more on this story

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine Debuts Double Neck Guitar
(hennemusic) Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine was on hand at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show on Wednesday at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, to show off his new Dean double-neck guitar.

Originally a one-off which was built for Dave to play at the "Big Four" shows, the guitar will go into full production this year.

"When I went to Dean, I found out that the guitars were very responsive," said Mustaine. "And one of the most important things was the attention to detail. Also the relationship with me as an artist. Because the previous companies I was with, the guitars were good, but the relationship was sour. And I found that being with Dean was really good for me, because they took care of me as an artist, they took care of the guitars, they also knew what the public liked." more including a photo.

Lee Greenwood Joining Peter Frampton At Benefit Concert Tonight
(Webster) Lee Greenwood will join Peter Frampton and Peter Cetera tonight at the Dustin Wells Foundation's Gift of Music concert to benefit the W.O. Smith School of Music.

Singled Out: DRGN King
Today Dom from DRGN King tells us about the song "Holy Ghost" from their debut album release, Paragraph Nights. Here is the story:

A couple years ago, Joe (our drummer) and I lived in a neighborhood in North Philadelphia called Port Richmond. It's a largely Polish neighborhood with great tiny bars and a Lithuanian Dance Hall. We branched out from our other friends living closer to downtown, purposefully carving out a private place where we could record all night and drink cheaply. Around this time I also met Ritz (the producer/other half of Drgn King) and spent a good amount of time riding the 25 bus to his studio in the Pennsport area of South Philadelphia.

One afternoon, I was on my way to the bus stop and happened into a particularly sketchy establishment down the street from our home. it claimed to be a sandwich shop, but I never saw anyone make/eat a sandwich there. A majority of the drinks were expired, and it was generally open late. My parents used to call a place like that a "front." A group of pre-teen kids were sitting at the weird sandwich counter as I walked in, and one particularly skittish girl grabbed a rosary around her neck and shouted "GET AWAY FROM ME JESUS!" to me, like I was some sort of weird satanic Christ that had come to earth for nefarious purposes. I'm pretty sure she was just trying to show off for her friends in the way that most kids do, but she kept up the act until I left the sketchy store. I got on the bus and immediately had the idea for the riff and the verses. They got demoed on my phone as I walked under I-95 to Ritz's studio.

That night, Ritz and I laid down the foundation of the song as it's known today. The whole "I'm on my way" chorus thing was a freestyle, thrown off type thing that ended up being the centerpiece of the song. Over the next few weeks, Ritz added all the cool synth swells and the sound effects. The song was eventually labored over, but the song itself as written in ten minutes under Interstate 95.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

. Rock Reads: Hammered: Heavy Tales from the Hard Rock Highway
The book is called Hammered mostly because its author, rock journalist Kirk Blows, is the former editor of Metal Hammer magazine. The moniker is quite apt in another respect though since a great deal of the subjects that Blows speaks with for these 50-or-so remembrances are thoroughly inebriated. - Read the full Hammered: Heavy Tales from the Hard Rock Highway review
