U2 Return With First New Song In Three Years |
The song, which is featured in the movie's trailer, sends a clear message, as Bono sings, "We can't fall any further and/We can't feel ordinary love/ We can't reach any higher/ We can't deal with ordinary love."
U2′s upcoming album has been in the works since their 2009-2011 world tour and features production work from Danger Mouse. Last year, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was reportedly seen at Electric Lady Studios in New York City at the same time the band was recording there, though there is no word yet whether it was for work or for play.
In a recent interview with Irish radio station, 98FM (via NME), bass player Adam Clayton said the band is aiming to finish the record at the end of November, but gave no timeframe for when the album will actually be released. But in the chat, he did hint at what fans can expect from the upcoming record.
"I think it's a bit of a return to U2 of old, but with the maturity," Clayton said. "If you like, of the U2 of the last 10 years. It's a combination of those two things and it's a really interesting hybrid."

Blink-182 Plan Intimate Full Album Shows |
In an in-studio interview with Kevin & Bean of Los Angeles' KROQ (a Radio.com station) yesterday morning, drummer Travis Barker talked about their upcoming intimate shows, how blink-182 are talking about a new album for 2014, and what it will be like playing their self-titled album from back to front, especially since they will be playing many of the songs live for the first time. Frontman Mark Hoppus surprised Barker by calling in from London to weigh in. "I don't like to rest, man," said Barker, talking about how he watched a UFC fight this weekend; he still sat in front of his television with a practice pad.
"My drumming got faster and faster as the fights continued, it was crazy," joked Barker. To say in his own "fighting" shape, Barker said he runs four or five times a week for five to six miles, has a strength and conditioning couch, and does jiu jitsu with his kids because he likes the "respect and discipline that comes with martial arts." This keeps him primed to tour as they have two-hour sets. "I have to go 110%," said Barker.
Both of Barker's kids love punk rock and look up to their tatted-up drummer father. "They bug me for them already," said Barker of his tattoos and his son's coming of age. "I tell him when he's sixteen we'll have that conversation and I have to talk his mom into it."
For the band, their coming-of-age came when they released their 2003 self-titled album. On the phone from London, Hoppus says that he's really "proud of that record."
"It was definitely a change in our attitude as a band, the way we thought of ourselves, the way we thought of our musicwe strived for this to be our Pet Sounds or our White Album" said Hoppus alluding to the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and other "bands that break out and do something different."
"I'm really proud of what we came up with," said Hoppus. It's been ten years since the album came out and because blink-182 haven't played most of the songs live since they recorded them, the band must feverishly rehearse them. One of Hoppus' tactics to learning the album is to listen to it and play his bass along with it. He also admitted to taking to the internet for guidance.
"Sadly, there's been a couple of times where I've had to go on Google and remember the lyrics of a song that I wrote myself," confessed Hoppus. He joked that Barker has always been so good at his instrument that he has no room for progress, while Hoppus has plenty of room to grow. Hoppus said that sometimes people come up to him and say, "My son started playing guitar a year ago and he knows all your guys' songs."

Metallica May Auction Off Their Riffs |
He says: "We have more riffs than we know what to do with. We talked about setting up a special riff thing, where maybe we could share some of these riffs with others, like an eBay kind of thing for leftover riffs. Some of them are actually quite decent, but we won't be able to use all of them."
It's not the first time a similar idea has been suggested: Classic Rock reported in February this year that Tony Iommi and Brian May had a similar project in the pipeline. May had visited Iommi's studio and discovered a huge catalogue of unused material.

Slipknot Frontman Says Next Album Will Be Really Dark |
He tells artistdirect.com: "Honestly, Slipknot is looming on the horizon. That's what's next in my mind anyway. I'm writing some demos. Clown is putting some things together. Joey is doing Scar The Martyr, but he's a... machine. He can write at any time. This band is just loaded with writers.
"We don't have a definitive start date, which is fine. That's okay for us now. When we're ready to make the album, we will. That's the mindset. Next year we're going to get together and start putting the pieces together.
"That album (Vol 3: The Subliminal Verses) is a bit of a peek at what I think the next album will be. It'll be a cross between Iowa and Vol. 3 in a lot of ways, while also evolving the way we always have. The stuff I'm writing right now is really dark. The stuff Clown is coming with is... beyond. It's really cool. It's going to be cool to get the alchemists in the same room and see what happens."

Volbeat Frontman Says Musicians Don't Make Money From Records |
He says: "Some people out there don't really get what musicians are trying to do. Because let's be honest, selling records doesn't put food on the table any more it's touring. But some fans just think 'oh, here comes the same CD with some live bonus tracks so they can try and cash in.'
"You know what it isn't about that because you can't sell records to make money anymore. It's more about giving the fans something special and trying to get the CD sales back again from all the downloading.
"I don't think downloading has any soul or spirit. I personally don't download anything. I like to hunt for the record or the movie that I want. No musician these days are earning good money from selling records, it's all about live shows. That's what the fans have to understand we are not trying to just make easy bucks, we are trying to get the record sales back in the stores again instead of people just sitting at home and doing it on the internet. It is actually killing the music industry. I get it now why bands have releases in those different formats. I think it's a really good idea."
He had more to say including some of the band's future plans.

Bowling For Soup On Their Final UK Tour |
The pop punks are currently touring the UK for what has been confirmed as the last time but Chandler says it doesn't make sense to continue touring abroad.
In an interview with music-news.com he explains why this is the band's last UK run. He begins: "For one thing with families and homeland for all of us, it just doesn't make sense for us to be out of the country for like a month at a time. But equally, we still wanted to be able to go out on top and not tarnish the memory of what we have been able to do for ourselves and our fans. You don't want to be that band that play for 3,000 people one year and three-years later playing for 100."

Singled Out: PLS PLS |
Musically I wanted to write something catchy, inherently simple, and that reminded me of being in a roller rink in 1985 (complete with 8 bit laser beam/ bomb drop sounds).
Lyrically, I have a hard time writing about dancing, shaking your ass, or robots, or freakazoids or whatever people were writing about back then so I had to go another direction.
So, I went with the old standby, the ups and downs of relationships. The frustration of not knowing what someone wants from you and being pushed to a breaking point as a result.
On/Off/On is kind of a dark song, but it does have those super cool tom overdubs in the verses that remind me of "Burning Down the House", and that makes me smile every time.
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album

Arcade Fire Release 'Afterlife' Lyric Video |
The studio version of the song made its official premiere today (Oct. 21) on Zane Lowe's popular BBC Radio 1 show, followed by the release of the lyric video. The clip utilizes scenes from 1959 Brazilian movie Black Orpheus, directed by France's Marcel Camus. The reference reinforces the album's relationship to the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, both depicted on the cover art for Reflektor.
Diehard Arcade Fire fans will recognize the highly danceable "Afterlife" as the second song the band performed on the premiere episode of this season's Saturday Night Live, which was followed by a cameo-laden half-hour special "Here Comes the Night Time," where the Canadian collective spotlighted three more tracks from the upcoming full-length.
The double-album, which was produced with the help of LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy, is a "mash-up of Studio 54 and Haitian Voodoo music," according to Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler.
The 12 tracks found on Reflektor were culled from fruitful recording sessions that yielded "50 or 60″ tunes, Butler added.

Under the Radar Metal Bands That Are Pushing Boundaries |
But no matter your taste, these five bands have developed a taste for the extreme and not only turned into something that is all their own, but also made it appealing for fans across the world, and that is no easy task.
1. Ghost B.C.: Founded in 2008 and known as Ghost B.C. here in the States for copyright reasons, Ghost is a Swedish heavy metal band that has brought spooky musical and theatrical elements to mainstream music that in this age of trendy indie pop. With a macabre look in mind, all band members dress in hooded robes and face paint while lead singer Papa Emeritus dons the dressage of gothic Roman Catholic Cardinal complete with full skull-face (pictured above).
But what is most impressive for a band that exists in the Internet age is that none of the band member's real names have ever been publicly disclosed, though they have recently revealed an upcoming EP with Dave Grohl. It would be easiest to compare this band to the classics Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult but I'll let you judge for yourself. Check out their (censored, and you'll see why) video for the song "Year Zero," complete with ladies stripping and chants of "Hail Satan!"
2. Power Trip: Tough guy hardcore has been around as long as I have. An impressive act here and there have combined circle pits and gang vocals with elements of Metallica-type thrash, but none in recent years have pushed that hybrid to the brink quite like Dallas, Texas' Power Trip. Like Ghost, this band first got trip-py in 2008 and slowly slipped EPs and singles out into the heavy metal ether, but their 2013 full length Manifest Decimation is what is really causing fans to sit up and pay attention. While the band definitely identifies with the 'play fast, blast hard' philosophy (after all, they are cohorts of L.A. thrash-punk band Trash Talk) dissident echoes and riffs keep you on your toes as you find yourself giving this band way more than one listen.
3. Deafheaven: The equivalent of a black metal black sheep, San Francisco's Deafheaven often seems too metal for shoegaze fans and too post-rock for black metal fanatics. But no matter which side of the line you are on, it's hard to disagree that this band is a) heavy and b) good at it. Formed in February of 2010, George Clarke and Kerry McCoy had a record deal by year's end with Deathwish Inc., the label that was founded by Jacob Bannon, lead singer of legendary hardcore act Converge. After beefing up their line-up in 2013, the band's sophomore effort Sunbather is an enigmatic record that is in many instances sonically overwhelming in a good way. As you listen to the title track, don't be afraid to embrace the shadows created by the music's bleak notes and Clarke's painfully taut vocals.
See who else made the list.
Pearl Jam Rock Brooklyn |
Anyone hoping for a reprise of Pearl Jam's and Jay Z's historic collaboration of "W.M.A." and "99 Problems" from last year's Made In America festival would be disappointed. Although, let's be real: Pearl Jam doesn't need help from anyone to put on an unbelievable concert.
Just days after the release of new album Lightning Bolt, the band seemed on a high. Maybe they're happy with the album, and how it has been received. Or perhaps it's just gratitude that they've attained the rare status of a band who can sell out multiple nights at a New York-area arena. They're also one of the few bands with a two-decade history that can play new songs without creating a bathroom exodus. "Sirens," the album's second single, has become an immediate fan favorite and it sounds even bigger in an arena than through your car speakers.
First single "Mind Your Manners," which nods to the band's punk influences was greeted as enthusiastically as many of the older songs. The new album popped up throughout the set list: "Infallible" sounded more raw without Brendan O'Brien's shiny production, and the title track was seemingly built for large rooms. "Let The Records Play" starts with a chooglin' blues/boogie riff not unlike vintage ZZ Top, and is likely to become a concert staple. And opening song "Pendulum," which featured Mike McCready playing his guitar with a bow, Zeppelin-style, is the latest in a series of mellow PJ songs that they've used to kick off their shows ("Oceans," "Sometimes" and "Of The Girl" are some of their other quiet openers).
Not that Pearl Jam left their back catalog behind. After "Pendulum" they stayed downbeat with "Release" and the R.E.M.-ish "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" both of which saw Vedder splitting lead vocals with the crowd of thousands. The rest of the main set featured a number of favorites: "Dissident," "Why Go," "I Am Mine," "Given To Fly," "Spin The Black Circle" and the timeless "Corduroy." The set also featured "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns," by Mother Love Bone, the band that featured Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard before they formed Pearl Jam.
