The Kinks Brothers Had Private Reunion

(Classic Rock) The Kinks guitarist Dave Davies has told how he and estranged brother Ray recently played music together - and their private reunion was more important than any public event could be.

The siblings have both recently spoken positively about the chances of hitting the stage together to mark the band's 50th anniversary. But Dave - who next week plays his first hometown concert in 13 years - is more concerned about coming to terms with the "toxic" relationship he has with his elder brother.

He tells the Independent: "It's like some people prefer me and Ray to be at each other's throats than to be brothers. In my 30s and 40s I resented the fact that he gave me so little credit for my input and creativity. But my love has always been relentlessly directed towards him."

He continues: "The older I get, the more difficult I find it being around Ray. I don't want to use the word 'abuse' - but I feel my energy seeping away from me sometimes if I'm with him.

"I might be sitting in the room, feeling perfectly happy, and I start to feel really tired, and wonder why. I think, 'Oh, I've got to get out.' It's always been a part of his great talent that he's been able to extract elements of people's characters and energy; so I have to limit the time I spend with him."

He had more to say here.

ZZ Top and Jeff Beck Teaming Up For Summer Tour

Legendary Texas rockers ZZ Top and British guitar icon Jeff Beck will be teaming up this summer to launch a North American tour, which will mark their very first tour together.

The initial dates for the trek have been announced for the five week tour that will be kicking off on August 8th in Missoula, MT at Ogren Park and the announced dates run until September 12th in The Woodlands, TX.

The shows on the tour will begin with a full set from Jeff Beck, followed by a full set from ZZ Top and then they top each night off with a grand finale where they will join each other on stage.

ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons had this to say about hitting the road with Beck, "Ever since experiencing 'Jeff's Boogie,' the prospect of performance with Jeff Beck on the deck brings us into focus with the curator of crunch."

Beck adds "Ever since Eliminator I thought it would be great to play with ZZ Top," and he then went on to declare Billy Gibbons, "The Professor of Grunge."

'Celebrity Skin' Hole Line-Up Reunites

(Radio.com) With the 20th anniversary of Hole's classic 1994 full-length Live Through This coming up later this month, Courtney Love has announced that she's reunited the late-'90s line-up of the band that recorded the 1998 follow-up, Celebrity Skin.

The revelation came during an interview with The Quietus, where Love revealed that she'd been rehearsing new material with Eric Erlandson (guitar), Patty Schemel (drums) and Melissa Auf der Mauer (bass). "I started playing with Patty and Melissa and Eric, just to see how that was," Love said. "We already played like three or four times in the last week."

Love hinted at a potential reunion of Hole's most famous line-up last December, when she posted a picture of herself with Erlandson captioned, "2014 going to be a very interesting year." more on this story

Accept Releasing Blind Rage Album This Summer

(Classic Rock) Accept have revealed that their 14th studio album is to be called Blind Rage, and the new album is set to be released worldwide on July 18th via Nuclear Blast.

It's the German veterans' third release since reuniting in 2009 behind American vocalist Mark Tornillo, and follows their two best-charting records of all time: 2010′s Blood Of The Nations and 2012′s Stalingrad.

"Something happened to us - something subliminal and impetuous. It's wild and scary, and it's called Blind Rage," says Guitarist Wolf Hoffmann. "The cover artwork by Daniel Goldsworthy shows the beast coming over us in blind rage, all over the planet. Wherever we go, whenever you turn on the TV there's blind rage in the works - natural catastrophes or man-made madness." more on this story

Bernie Torme Surpasses PledgeMusic Goal In Under 24 Hours

(Classic Rock) Bernie Torme launched a PledgeMusic campaign on Tuesday to fund his first album in 15 years and he announced that he passed his target amount in under 24 hours.

The Irish icon - known for his time with Ozzy Osbourne, Ian Gillan and others - aims to return to his roots with the double-disc set, which follows 1999′s Wild Trash Guitar.

He tells Classic Rock: "I wanted to do an album now because it's been so f***ing long since the last one. Admittedly there were three Guy McCoy Torme records in between, but even the last of those was a while ago.

"I've got some really cool tracks: rockers, cosmic stuff, bluesy things. Stuff I really like to play. The Pledge thing is just brilliant - there's no Mister Man telling you what you 'ought' to be doing."

Corey Taylor, Scott Ian Discuss Dio Tribute Album

(Radio.com) Dio earned the love and respect of metal fans and his fellow musicians because of his incredible singing voice and his great catalog of songs. But, more importantly, because he never sold out. That appreciation for all three of those things is evident on Ronnie James Dio - This Is Your Life, a tribute album out this week (April 1) featuring Dio's peers like Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Motorhead and the Scorpions. As well as his disciples: Anthrax, Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Halestorm, Metallica and Tenacious D, who cover "The Last In Line," complete with a flute solo.

For those who are unfamiliar with the man's phenomenal career, Ronnie James Dio fronted no less than three classic metal bands. First there was Rainbow, the band Ritchie Blackmore formed after leaving Deep Purple, in which RJD appeared on the band's first three albums: 1975′s Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, 1976′s Rising and 1978′s Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. After that, he had the confidence and chops to replace the irreplaceable, taking over for Ozzy Osborne after he left Black Sabbath. With 1980′s Heaven and Hell and 1981′s Mob Rules, he gave that band one of the great second acts in rock and roll history before forming moving on to for his own band, Dio.

Longtime fan Corey Taylor told Radio.com that "It didn't matter what band he was with, the power of what he did just translated over any type of music." Case in point, Rainbow sounds very different from Sabbath and Sabbath sounds very different from Dio. "He could pick up on any type of music and make it his own," Taylor said. "He was wonderful. He's one of the best metal singers of all time it's hard to sing his songs!"

Looking to show he was also up for the challenge, Taylor took on one of Dio's hardest, and most iconic songs, "Rainbow In The Dark." "That's been my favorite Dio song since I was very young," Taylor said. "I remember being so taken by the video and the song itself. it was so damn catchy. And it's just been one of those songs that has stuck with me through the years."

Taylor added, "A lot of people gravitate towards [Black Sabbath's] 'Heaven and Hell,' and 'Mob Rules,' or of course [Dio's] 'Holy Diver,' that's probably the one that people instantly recognize. But 'Rainbow in the Dark,' I was lucky that it wasn't already taken, but I called dibs pretty much immediately. 'That's mine!' I just tried to make it my own and do it in the spirit of the song. It is such a brilliant song."

Scott Ian, whose band covered Sabbath's "Neon Knights," also felt a connection to Dio, but it wasn't just his metal catalogue. "I heard him on the first Rainbow record. Years later, I heard some old 45′s of him singing doo-wop," he explained. "And that was great too!" He's not kidding. While Dio is an icon of heavy metal, he started his music career singing in doo-wop acts including Ronnie and the Red Caps and Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, before moving to heavy rock with a band called Elf, and then after that, Rainbow. "Pretty much everything he's done, especially his work with Sabbath, was a huge influence on Anthrax, and certainly on [Anthrax singer] Joey [Belladonna]," Ian said. "Joey is a massive Ronnie fan."

While Ian was 19 and Taylor was just nine years old when Dio's 1983 debut, Holy Diver came out, Lzzy Hale of Halestorm wasn't even born yet. (She was born in 1984.) Luckily, Hale had parents who liked to rock and turned her on to Dio at a young age. "Holy Diver was actually the first album that I heard from Dio, thanks to my very cool parents," she said. "When I got interested in singing and being in a band, they were like, 'Here, get into some real music.' It was Dio and Black Sabbath and Deep Purple and all the '70s hard rock and metal stuff." Her band ended up covering "Straight Through The Heart," off Dio's debut, which Hale says has been a part of her life for "a long, long time."

Tribute albums with A-list lineups are always difficult to put together, and RJD's wife/manager Wendy Dio, who produced this compilation, told Radio.com that it has been in the works for two and a half years. It was a long haul, due mostly to hectic schedules by the artists, but everyone was eager to pay tribute and give back, since the album will raise funds for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. RJD succumbed to stomach cancer in 2010.

"I asked Glenn Hughes first," Wendy said, referring to the former Deep Purple bassist/singer. "He said, 'Absolutely.' Then I went to Rob Halford, who was also a good friend of Ronnie's. Then, Metallica called to see if they could be involved, and then Corey Taylor and Anthrax." more on this story

Space Elevator Explain Why You Can't Download Their Songs

(Classic Rock) Controversial 70s-themed outfit Space Elevator have refused to release their self-titled debut album as a download. The band - featuring Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Gary Moore bassist Neil Murray - set out their stall with love-it-or-hate-it single Elevator in January.

The album is now on sale, but only in vinyl and CD formats. That's because Space Elevator want listeners to focus on the entire musical experience, rather than consume individual tracks like soundbites.

Frontwoman The Duchess says: "We wrote and recorded with the ethos of Queen, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac and even Kate Bush. Those artists would record albums to be listened to as exactly that: an album.

"We want people to listen to the whole record from beginning to end, rather than cherrypicking favourite tracks, which is so common with downloads these days." more on this story

Asia Featuring John Payne Releasing Covers Album

(Prog) Asia Featuring John Payne are gearing up to release a prog covers album entitled Recollections, featuring their take on tracks written by King Crimson, Yes, Alan Parsons Project, Camel and others.

The idea came from a recent residency in Las Vegas, where Payne delivered a show called Raiding The Rock Vault. It started as a solo project but soon included the members of his band (not to be confused with Asia).

The frontman says: "It seemed logical in the end to be an Asia Featuring John Payne record. This band has always been about talented and inventive players.

"The focus is on great musicianship with songs that have real hooks, and that's why it was such a refreshing challenge. We'd add slight twists so we could do our own thing without ruining the originals. We wanted to show that respect."

More details, including the tracklisting, here.

Keb' Mo' Gave Up Rock and Roll Dream For The Blues

(The Blues Keb' Mo' has admitted that he originally struggled with the temptation to chase a rock'n'roll dream instead of focusing on his blues. And the Grammy-winning artist is glad to have put the idea far behind him.

Mo', real name Kevin Moore, tells the Georgetowner: "I had some thoughts about being a rock star, you know, that kind of life. It took me a while to get everything straight and forget about that."

His 11th studio album, Blues Americana, is set for release on April 21 - and he says it's a prime example of how he finally learned to live for the music instead of the lifestyle.

It's a lesson he picked up from Taj Mahal: "He was doing things his way, and that's what you do," says Mo'. "People respond to the songs. It's about real life." more on this story

Protest The Hero Lose A Member

(TeamRock Radio) Protest The Hero have announced bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi will take no further part in touring to support the release of their latest album Volition. But they've stopped short of saying he's no longer a member of the Canadian band.

They say in a statement: "Arif has decided that the touring schedule is more intense than to what he is prepared to commit. He is actively involved with other projects at home, and being a full-time band member isn't a practical thing.

"Though he will be missed, everything was left on a positive note. We're open to his involvement down the road - and only time will see how it all plays out." Find out who is replacing him.

Pete Wentz Wants Fall Out Boy To Be Like Metallica

(Radio.com) Pete Wentz has checked off quite a few boxes on his bucket list. In 16 years, the Fall Out Boy bassist has graduated from playing in underground hardcore bands to teen heart-throb to television host to successful entrepreneur and is still looking to add to his list of accomplishments.

The launch and subsequent tour for Fall Out Boy's fifth album, Save Rock and Roll, took fans by surprise and soon after they began rolling out a series of violent videos called the Young Blood Chronicles boasting surprise cameos and a plot twistier than Lombard Street.

But the band hasn't stopped there. With a successful video game launch already under their belts with the Oregon Trails-inspired Fall Out Boy Trail, the band seized an opportunity last month and released Fall Out Bird, an app that pays homage to the wildly popular and now unavailable Flappy Bird. On the heels of that success, the band will soon launch an updated version 2.0, inadvertently solidifying themselves as bona fide players in the app world. "To me this game's done on a lark. It allows us to have a conversation with Pop Culture," says Wentz.

Radio.com caught up with Wentz to discuss the band's surprise comeback, their foray into video games, and how they just want to be like Metallica and what it means to be a successful entrepreneur.

When asked " Where would you like to see yourself musically and in business in ten years?" he responded, "Business-wise, it's been a learning process for me. When we started with the record label I didn't know what an end cap was. I didn't know anything about marketing. I didn't know anything about price positioning and that kind of stuff. For me it's been constant learning; learning to be ahead of the curve, and even having been in the music business for as long as our band has been, we were at the tail end of album sales, and seeing the streaming model take off and seeing people embrace that. That's been really interesting. As far as business goes, I want to be relevant but still learn about how that side of it [marketing] works.

"Musically, I look at a band like Metallica and when people talk about Metallica, Metallica is the descriptor for the band, like when people say 'such-and-such band sounds like Metallica.' I would love to be a band where people say 'oh that band sounds like Fall Out Boy.' And I think that the way you do that is by creating a legacy and by remaining true to who you are and most importantly, just surviving.

"The longer your band has been around and you've remained relevant the more you've created a legacy for yourselves."

Check out the full interview here.

Soundgarden's Ben Shepherd Learned To Play Without A Guitar

(Classic Rock) Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd has recalled how he learned to play guitar before he even had one. All four members of the iconic outfit have spoken in a Guitar Center video to mark the 20th anniversary of groundbreaking album Superunknown.

Shepherd tells how, as a boy, he told his stepfather he wanted to be a musician, and was presented with a large book of chords. And all he had to work with was a disconnected guitar neck.

The bassist explains: "My stepdad said, 'Okay, if you can learn every chord in this book I'll get you a guitar.' So I did; I sat down with a neck - no strings, nothing, just a neck - and I learned every chord possible out of that book. And I got a guitar."

His passion for just playing has never diminished, he admits. "It took me until we reunited to find that Kim Thayill wrote Superunknown with Chris Cornell," Shepherd says. "I thought that was just a Chris riff. I never paid any attention; I was just like, blaring guitars, 'Alright, let's play!'"

White Hills Premiere 'MIST (Winter)' Video

(Prog) Prog has premiere "MIST (Winter)" the latest video from New York space rockers White Hills. It's taken from the trio's seventh album, So You Are So You'll Be, which considers the remnants of humanity that will remain once our civilisation has gone.

They explain: "Long after man has ceased to exist, humankind's mark on the universe will still be felt. There will be a circular ripple of radio waves created during the 20th and 21st centuries, travelling ever outwards into the cosmos for all eternity, as if caused by a tiny pebble dropped into a perfectly still pond.

"This thin, elegant wave will contain the only remnants of what we were. In it will be all of our films, radio, television, electronic communications and internet activity. It will contain all of our art, history, news and entertainment, in all of its stupidity, glory, inconsequentiality and brilliance - heading outwards across the void to the ends of time itself." more on this story

Singled Out: The Raskins' We Had It All

Today The Raskins tells us about their new single "We Had It All" which they have released ahead of the May 13th release of their self-titled debut album. Here is the story:

This song was written as a direct paradox of our life's travels through the music business. Basically growing up in Queens NY, three brothers living in one bedroom with our bunk beds, KISS posters on the wall and a piano. We always had dreams of striving straight toward the top of the rock and roll universe. But dreams and reality can sometimes feel light years apart. Thrusting ourselves into a music world where we had zero idea of what we are doing or where we were going. Strictly trial and error.... one day (true story) we The Raskin Twins packed up a car willed to us by our late Aunt and Uncle with everything we owned and headed out to Hollywood in search of the dream. So cliche.....

In the video you see the Raskins traveling long distances, hitch hiking, performing for loose change in public etc.. Finally to end up at the wholly grail of record labels and the doors are locked. Pretty much a metaphor of what was to come for us. Another words none of this was going to come easy. When we feel like we are failing or falling short of our music goals and dreams at the end of the day we are two of the happiest guys on the planet because were doing what we are most passionate, music, and on any level that is ultimately more than good enough for us... Thus coming up with the title and phrase of our debut single "We Had It All" meaning we didn't have to travel 2000 plus miles to feel the success of the music industry. We always had that by just having the passion for music in our soul....We soon realized we don't need to find the music industry, if we just keep doing what we so very much love, the industry will find us....... Funny enough it finally has!!!

The Raskins debut album release May13th on our own record label MIRAL Records, BDG,RED, LLC A Division of Sony Music (which stands for Micah (MI) Roger (R) and Logan (A L) MIRAL)

The group The Raskins is made up of Logan and Roger Raskin with there older brother Micah handling all there business matters...

This first single we definitely wanted to have that rock n roll pop feel pretty much paying tribute to our first and biggest influence out of New York City.....KISS...We thought this particular track did and does that. With the song starting of with a very Ace Frehley type guitar riff at the top and for the main solo, with a pop rock anthem type feel and harmonies so reminiscent of that early kiss sound with Gene, Paul, and Peter Criss.....

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
