Nick Oliveri Plays With Queens of the Stone Age For 1st Time In 10 Years

(Radio.com) After nearly a decade away from the band, Nick Oliveri is slowly re-familiarizing himself with Queens of the Stone Age. The rock bassist performed with his former band live for the first time in 10 years Wednesday night, Rolling Stone reports.

The rockers were performing in Portland, Ore., when Oliveri appeared onstage to sing lead vocals on "You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire" from the band's 2002 junior release Songs for the Deaf during the set's encore.

Oliveri was fired from Queens of the Stone Age in 2004, with the reason seemingly his tendency to party- a lot. Since then, his prominent project has been the metal/punk act Mondo Generator.

However, he reconnected with the band last year, singing backing vocals on "If I Had a Tail" from 2013′s Like Clockwork. Fan-shot video of the Portland performance can be found here.

Foo Fighters Making Progress On New Album

Foo Fighters are making progress on their new album. In fact, producer Butch Vig reveals in a new interview that the band is halfway through with work on the effort.

NME ran a report with a quote from a new Kerrang! interview with Vig where he disclosed, "We've been recording at some different locations, but we're almost halfway done with the recording and it's going well.

Vig also confirms recent comments made by frontman Dave Grohl that the album will take on a different sound than past Foo Fighters albums. Vig said, "It sounds different - we've thrown a few things into the mix, in the recording process, that are going to give the record a different sound and a different feel. It's been a challenge, but it's also been exciting."

This is similar to what Grohl recently told the BBC's Zane Lowe: "I know what it sounds like and I honestly think the entire concept is really going to take people by surprise and it sounds nuts." more on this story

Why All Of Sebastian Bach's Friends Are Dead

"All My Friends Are Dead" is one of the more curious song titles on Sebastian Bach's forthcoming album "Give 'Em Hell" and in our recent interview with Bach, the former Skid Row frontman explained the meaning behind the track.

He explained, "The term is funny. I just saw it on a T-shirt and I just thought it was funnybut we're all getting older and it seems that everyday I lose a friend. Last week I lost a friend named Dave Brockie, better known as Oderus Urungus of Gwar. He cast me in the Gwar movie, 'Skulhedface' and I went down to Richmond, Virginia and I lived with Gwar for a couple of days and shot their movie and got to know him and he's dead. So, a lot of my friends are dead. And before that, Jeff Hanneman,it just keeps going on down the line.

"You can also refer to a relationship that's dead. 'You're dead to me', it's actually a song title I've had, 'Dead to Me', but I just blew it because I told you. (laughs) So it can mean that to.

"But I gotta say in the middle part of that song, we go a little crazy, musically, it's like a freestyle heavy metal jam in the middle section. And I unleashed one of my favorite screams erupt out of my throat, in the middle of that song. And I love capturing the pipes on the new record cuz I ain't getting any younger. When I hear my voice like that, at the full roar, like a lion, I'm like, 'damn this is great that I'm capturing this on a record in 2014.' I'm like, cool, I can't believe that's me."

Katatonia Member Leaves Group To Get A 'Normal Job'

Katatonia suffered a big blow this week as drummer Daniel Liljekvist has decided to leave the group after 15 years because he could no longer "combine job, family and commit 100% to Katatonia."

Liljekvist had this to say to fans, "I've been thinking about this for the last couple of months and I've come to the sad conclusion that I have to leave the band. It's got nothing to do with 'difference in viewsor any other bullsh*t. I just cannot combine job, family and commit 100% to Katatonia. Times for musicians are rough and I've decided to concentrate on my family and get a normal job that gets the bills paid.

"I've had some of the best moments in my life the past 14 odd years together with my favorite people in the world. I've been all over the planet with this lotmy second family. Thank you! I'm gonna miss playing with you and I'm gonna miss hanging out with you on the road so much. And I'm gonna miss meeting all the great Katatonia fans all over the world. You know who you are. You are truly amazing! I'm not gonna miss all the freaks and idiots we've come across during all the years. You probably don't know who you are. And I will not miss bad catering, sh*t beer and banana juice This is Daniel, rocking the f- off! Cheers!"

The band added, "We are sad and hollow to see Daniel leave our ranks, but yet his decision has our sincere understanding. Nothing lasts forever and all good things must come to an end sooner or later. Yet it makes it so much more frustrating when it happens for the wrong reasons or before reaching our terminus. Particularly, we can't pretend the current climate has nothing to do with it, in fact this is undeniably yet another outcome of musicians struggling at the crossroads of today's "scene/industry". Tragically, this situation forces a member, brother - and our fans favourite long-time drummer - to resign from a band he sacrificed a decade and a half to build. While encouraging this topic to inevitable debate and re-evaluation, we will always be grateful for the years we shared together and we wish Daniel the best of luck in the future. It goes without saying, we part as band members, but certainly remain as friends.

"On a further positive note, this will not affect any of the upcoming tour dates. The 'Dethroned & Uncrowned - Unplugged & Reworked' tour next month will proceed accordingly and see JP Asplund taking on percussion duties - he was the one who actually played all original percussion on Dead End Kings/Dethroned & Uncrowned albums. Stand-in drummer Daniel Moilanen (Ex-Engel) will perform on the upcoming summer festivals.

"Let's welcome our helping hands, have a goodbye toast for Daniel (note that would be 11 sips for him) and keep our eyes on the horizon: new tours coming up in South America and Australia as well as the long awaited 20th anniversary 'Last Fair Day Gone Night - Live at Koko' DVD coming out this fall and much more"

Rob Zombie Working On New Studio Album

Good news for Rob Zombie fans, Zombie revealed in a new interview that fans won't have to wait too long for the release of a new studio album, the follow-up to last year's 'Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor'

Zombie and his band reportedly began work on the new album back in January and will resume work on it next month. He explained, "I don't want years and years to go by between records, even though somehow it always seems to happen."

He went on to say, "And, you know, we're really excited because we really felt that for ourselves as a band, the last record really kind of got back to something that I was looking for, and we were just excited to take it to the next level. When you're feeling inspired, you kind of want to go for it, because sometimes you don't feel inspired."

While fans wait for the release of this new album, they will have the new 'The Zombie Horror Picture Show' DVD, Blu-ray and companion book to tide them over. The live package will be released on May 20th.

Zombie will also be launching a short tour later this month which will start with an appearance at the Fort Rock festival in Fort Myers, Florida on April 26th and will be concluding with a show on May 10th in Camden, New Jersey.

The Who 'Hoping' For New Album

(Gibson) The Who are 'hoping' to record a new album but they will be definitely kick off a tour in December, beginning with U.K. dates and continuing with shows in North America in 2015. As reported by Billboard.com, the band will hit the road sometime around Christmas.

"It will be a world tour," reveals Pete Townshend. "I'm not crazy about going on the road, but I'm in good shape and once I start doing it--and I'm still very good at it-I'll take some pleasure from it."

The veteran guitarist added that a new album by The Who is a distinct possibility. "I'm trying to [look] through my 20,000 hours of complete and utter disorganized music [to find possible songs]," he said.

"I'll be pulling some songs out of [his long-gestating project] 'Floss' to give to Roger [Daltrey] to see if we've got enough to make an album. It might be a big waste of time, but I'm hoping there will be an album."

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the band performing under the Who moniker. Townshend, Daltrey and bassist John Entwistle started performing together as The Detours in 1961. Late drummer Keith Moon joined the band in the spring of 1964. more on this story

Bruce Springsteen Reveals New Song 'Hurry Up Sundown'

(Radio.com) Last week the E Street Band was getting inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. This week, the world gets to hear a new Bruce Springsteen song from the forthcoming album American Beauty EP (why yes, that is also the name of a seminal Grateful Dead album) to be released on Record Store Day, April 19.

"Hurry Up Sundown", which you can hear on NPR, is one of four previously unreleased Springsteen songs from the High Hopes sessions. Also to be featured on the EP are tracks titled "Mary Mary", "Her Blue Eyes" and the eponymous title track.

"Hurry Up Sundown" is a straightforward rocker with a strong guitar attack and Springsteen's booming, gritty baritone, the Boss singing about looking toward "the end of another working day" and what comes after. The song seems destined for placement on the band's vast catalog of songs played during live shows. more on this story

Original Venom Reunion Not Going To Happen

(Classic Rock) Venom co-founder Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn has shot down rumours of a classic lineup reunion - revealing that he's spoken to Conrad 'Cronos' Lant directly about the possibility.

The pioneering British metal outfit continue today behind Lant, but speculation had been circling for some time that he, Mantas and Tony 'Abaddon' Bray were getting back together.

Dunn, who's now with M-Pire Of Evil, confirms there was a grain of truth behind the stories. He says: "I received a call almost a year ago from the original management. My response was that I was willing to talk - but I did not believe for one minute there would be any realistic chance, given the past history between the members.

"As time went by it became obvious to me that the two people who had to communicate in some way were the two of us. I made the decision to contact Conrad to get an answer, which would basically come down to a simple 'yes' or 'no.'"

The guitarist admits he was nearly certain of the reply he'd receive, and that he had his own reservations about a reunion. He's not surprised to say: "The answer came back as 'no.' more on this story

Brent Hinds Talks Zappa and New Mastodon Album

(Prog) Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds has spoken exclusively to TeamRock about his great passion for the musical works of Frank Zappa. Speaking to us at his home in Atlanta, Georgia, the bearded virtuoso waxes lyrical about discovering Zappa for the first time and how the legendary composer and guitarist continues to be a huge presence in his musical life and listening habits.

"You know it's Frank Zappa when you hear it," Brent says. "It has that signature guitar tone. It provides hours of entertainment for my life! I have 80 of his albums on my iTunes. It's a mind-blowing catalogue."

Meanwhile, Mastodon are poised to release their sixth studio album, Once More 'Round The Sun, later this year via Warner Brothers. Produced/mixed by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains/Rush/Deftones), the follow-up to 2011's widely acclaimed The Hunter will feature 11 tracks and artwork by Oakland-based artist Skinner, who describes his work as "psychedelic nightmare paintings".

"Every Mastodon record is like taking a snapshot of where we are as musicians and as people," says vocalist/guitarist Bill Kelliher, "and Once More 'Round The Sun is definitely a snapshot of where we've been over the past year."

New Book Explores Rolling Stones' Exile and Transition

A new book that gives a first hand account of a transition period in the career of the Rolling Stones, "Ain't It Time We Said Goodbye: The Rolling Stones on the Road to Exile" is set to be released on May 13th in North America.

The publisher sent over these details about the book: In 1971, the Rolling Stones announced that they would be going into tax exile in the South of France. They would do a final "farewell" tour of Great Britain for two weeks in March. Two shows were played every night and the set list included, not only classics like "Midnight Rambler" and "Satisfaction," but also tracks from their unreleased album, Sticky Fingers.

Robert Greenfield was the only journalist allowed to accompany the band on this whirlwind tour. He provides a first-hand account of the end of the first chapter of this band's extraordinary career.

After this tour, the Rolling Stones would never go back to the small shows, where they would jump on stage and just perform. From then on, there would be rehearsals, sound checks, backstage passes, and security. This last tour of Great Britain marked an end to a time when one of the greatest bands in history could play rock 'n' roll the way it was meant to be played.

Here is the official synopsis: For ten days in March 1971, the Rolling Stones traveled by train and bus to play two shows a night in many of the small theaters and town halls where their careers began. No backstage passes. No security. No sound checks or rehearsals. And only one journalist allowed. That journalist now delivers a full-length account of this landmark event, which marked the end of the first chapter of the Stones' extraordinary career.

Ain't It Time We Said Goodbye is also the story of two artists on the precipice of mega stardom, power, and destruction. For Mick and Keith, and all those who traveled with them, the farewell tour of England was the end of the innocence.

Based on Robert Greenfield's first-hand account and new interviews with many of the key players, this is a vibrant, thrilling look at the way it once was for the Rolling Stones and their fans-and the way it would never be again. Pre-order the book here.

2014 Joey Ramone Birthday Bash Details Revealed

Organizers of the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash have announced details for this year's event which will be taking place on the late Ramones frontman's birthday of May 19th.

The annual celebration of Ramone's legacy will be taking place at a more intimate venue this year, Bowery Electric, which is located on the corner of the Bowery and Joey Ramone Place (only a block away from where the legendary CBGBs once stood).

The Joey Ramone Tribute Band featuring Cheetah Chrome, Glen Matlock, Sic F*cks, George Tabb, Mickey Leigh and additional surprise guests will be headlining the show.

The event will also feature performances from Andy Shernoff, David Peel, The A-Bones, Heap, Gobsh*tes, The Independents (a group Joey managed), and The Bullys. Sean O'Sullivan's Punk Pipers will once again be the closing act for the celebration.

Organizers also announced that John Holmstrom, Stig Stench, Monte Melnick, and Peter Aschner will all act as Masters of Ceremony for the event.

Joey Ramones Birthday Bash cofounder Mickey Leigh had this to say, "There is never a shortage of reasons to celebrate the birthday and life of my brother, and never hard to find a theme every year, either.

"This year the theme is more obvious than in all the years prior. Being that The Ramones were born in 1974, this year we'll be celebrating not only the birthday of Jeff Hyman, we'll be celebrating the birth of Joey Ramone, as well."

Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic Look Back On Nirvana's Rock Hall Induction

(Radio.com) Minds were blown last week when surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic got together to perform songs by their former band for the first time since Kurt Cobain walked the earth, about two decades ago.

First, they performed (along with former touring guitarist and Grohl's fellow Foo Fighter Pat Smear) at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday night (April 10), joined by Joan Jett ("Smells Like Teen Spirit"), Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth ("Aneurysm"), Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent ("Lithium") and Lorde ("All Apologies"). Later that night, they performed a longer set at Brooklyn metal bar St. Vitus with Jett, Gordon and Clark (Lorde had to fly to California for her scheduled performance at Coachella), along with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. and John McCauley of Deer Tick (he also fronts a Nirvana tribute band, "Deervana").

Grohl and Novoselic both discussed the epic night with Rolling Stone, revealing that they also wanted PJ Harvey to perform with them that night."Kurt loved PJ Harvey," Grohl told RS. "We had always imagined playing our song 'Milk It' from In Utero with her. It's a twisted song, almost like something that could have been on her record Rid of Me, which was also produced by Steve Albini [who produced In Utero]. It just seemed to pair up so well. Unfortunately, she couldn't make it."

The former bandmates came up with the idea of the tribute about eight weeks before the big night, which called for a bit of preparation. "I picked up a Nirvana tab book a week before to re-learn my parts," Novoselic said.

For Grohl's part, he had to re-acclimate himself with the physical rigors of playing drums for Nirvana: "I haven't played those drum parts since I was 25. I'm 45 now. We played for 10 f***ing hours each day," over two long days of rehearsals. "After the first night of rehearsals, I limped home, had two glasses of wine, three Advil, took a hot shower and slept for 10 f***ing hours. That's a coma for me, because I never sleep."

One song that didn't make the long induction ceremony (which went overtime by about an hour) was an all-star finale of AC/DC's "Highway To Hell," a song that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have been playing on their tour (the E Street Band were also inducted that night, and performed prior to Nirvana). Novoselic was glad that that part of the program got cut: "I wasn't into it," he says. "I love AC/DC and I love Bruce Springsteen. I grew up listening to them. But we kept saying, 'We have the big finale. We have our finale!'" Indeed, anything would have been anticlimactic after that performance.

They also discuss the filming of the after show and if they will ever perform together again. Read about that here.

The Pixies Black Francis Conceived His First Son at Coachella

(Radio.com) There are many people who claim they were conceived at Woodstock in 1969. Not to be outdone by feckless hippies, Black Francis says that he conceived his first son at his first Coachella ten years ago. Cherish the thought.

To more pressing matters, Pixies are set to release their first LP in over 23 years called Indie Cindy, and Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering sat down to talk with Radio.com at Coachella about some songs that didn't make the cut, their new touring bass player Paz Lenchantin, Francis' porno-graphic novel The Good Inn, and how journalists have been approaching their new material.

"If you don't accept reality, you will suffer," says Francis. "We accept that reality. If we didn't accept that reality, we would be in pain every time we read one of those reviews where people were caught up in the past. We would be suffering. We don't know if other people accept us for who we are, but we accept other people for who they are, everyone has to have their feelings, that's fine." more on this story
