John Lennon's Killer 'Sorry For Being Such An Idiot'

(Radio.com) More than 30 years after killing John Lennon, Mark David Chapman is finally showing a bit of remorse. In his eighth appearance before a parole board at the Wende Correctional Facility in upstate New York last week, Chapman said he understood if the board denied his release for all the pain he has caused.

In transcripts acquired by New York Daily News on Wednesday (Aug. 27), Chapman said, "I'm sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory."

Chapman also said, "Many, many people loved him. He was a great and talented man and they are still hurting. I get letters so that's a major factor. It's not a regular crime."

Chapman fired five shots on Dec. 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment house where Lennon lived on Manhattan's Upper West Side, hitting the ex-Beatle four times. After pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Chapman was sentenced 20 years to life in prison in 1981.

During the appeal, Chapman also allegedly bragged to the board about the "incredible planning, absolutely, incredible stalking" that went into the murder of the Beatle.

Martin Scorsese Making Ramones Movie

(Classic Rock) Martin Scorsese is to direct a dramatisation about the Ramones, which is expected to launch in 2016 - the 40th anniversary of band's formation, it's been reported.

Nothing more has been revealed about the film, other than Scorsese's involvement, although the acclaimed director isn't expected to start on the project until he wraps up his movie Silence, which heads into production next year.

The group's last original member Tommy Ramone died in July after a battle with cancer, but plans for a celebration of the band's music in 2016 are in full swing.

Jeff Jampol, who co-manages the group's estate with Dave Frey, says a variety of projects aside from the film are in the works to commemorate the band's anniversary, including a documentary and book. More details here.

Aerosmith Could Just Tour Rather Than Record Says Joe Perry

(Classic Rock) Joe Perry says he doesn't know if recording a new Aerosmith album is worth it, saying the band might be better touring and playing songs the fans know and love instead.

Aerosmith are currently on the road with the Let Rock Rule tour, supporting 2012 album Music From Another Dimension, and the guitarist says fans want to hear the classics rather than newer material.

Perry tells Boston magazine: "When we go out there and play live, people don't really want to hear anything unless they know it. We've played a couple of songs off the new record and got some polite applause.

"Before the tour, I tweeted, 'What song off the new record would you like to hear?' The first tweet I got back was, 'It depends what song you have to take out of the set.' That really put things into perspective.

"I don't know if it's worth going in and sweating blood over a new record when we could be out on the road playing all these other songs people want to hear. It's an interesting position to be in."

Queen Face Difficulty With Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson Duet

(hennemusic) Queen drummer Roger Taylor is sharing an update on "Queen Forever", a new album due later this year that will include unreleased songs featuring the late Freddie Mercury.

The project sees Taylor and guitarist Brian May recording new backing tracks to the Mercury material, just as they did for 1995's "Made In Heaven" album, and is expected to include at least one duet between Freddie and Michael Jackson.

Dealing with the legalities with Jackson's estate surrounding the material featuring the pop icon has been a challenge for the band. "[Yes] if we could get a decision from the Michael Jackson estate, who seem to be, well, difficult," says Taylor.

"[Producer] William Orbit did a really nice mix of one of our tracks with Michael and I'm pretty certain that will be on Queen Forever. But it's been like wading through glue." here.

Weezer Frontman's Collage Life Inspires New TV Show

(Radio.com) Rivers Cuomo's college life is coming to the small screen. The Weezer frontman's return to Harvard University after taking a eight year sabbatical is the basis for an upcoming Fox pilot called DeTour.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the coming-of-age series will be written by Steve Franks, the creator of TBS' Psych, and will follow "a 30-something rock star" who goes back to college. Cuomo actually lived in the dorms while completing his bachelor's degree in English. He graduated in 2006.

Now we'll all get to see the kooky shenanigans he got into. But why do we feel like he actually spent a lot of time in that dorm room alone? Cuomo was quick to say that the show is in its early stages and that Fox may have jumped the gun with their press release, tweeting, "Pretty much every show makes a pilot before it goes on the air. Only 1 in 100 goes on 2 become a regular showI'll let u know if it gets more serious."

Bruce Springsteen Releasing Children's Book

(Radio.com) Bruce Springsteen's discography isn't exactly full of G-rated subject matter. The title track for Nebraska follows a young couple on a killing spree, "Atlantic City" delves into the world of organized crime, "Streets of Philadelphia" was inspired by (and seemingly about) living with AIDS and "Born in the U.S.A." deals with the pain of those who lived through (and died in) the Vietnam War.

So, news that Bruce Springsteen is co-authoring a forthcoming children's book is both a welcome change and a major departure from his typical lyrical themes.

Apparently, along with co-author Frank Caruso, the book was inspired by one of his songs that is appropriate for all-ages (kind of, anyway), "Outlaw Pete."

Springsteen described the story in a statement as "essentially the story of a man trying to outlive and outrun his sins." Read more here.

Dave Davies Wants Kinks Reunion

(Radio.com) We may be a bit closer to a Kinks reunion than we were a few days ago. Earlier this week, we reported that UK music magazine MOJO quoted Kinks frontman Ray Davies as saying that the band would reunite in 2015, with or without the involvement of his brother, guitarist Dave Davies.

When asked if it would truly be the Kinks without Dave, MOJO quoted Ray as saying, "Yes, it would. I think it's all down to the music. If somebody can't or won't play, there are other players out there. [Drummer] Mick [Avory] and I want to do it."

But the Kinks' official Facebook page soon posted a message of their own, saying, "MOJO is wrong. There will be NO Kinks reunion without BOTH Ray and Dave Davies. Ray Davies claims to have never said this."

All of this would lead one to perhaps believe that Dave Davies is, for some reason, not interested in a Kinks reunion. As it turns out, that's not so: yesterday Dave posted a short note to his Facebook page: "I would love to do some form of a Kinks reunion with Ray. - Dave."

Which is consistent with what Dave told Radio.com in our interview with him last year. He was amicable to the idea of doing some kind of Kinks project with his brother: "I'm not sure about a tour, but I think we're going to try and do something. We talked about doing maybe a couple of songs. I've written a few songs with that in mind. I'm sure Ray has some ideas, of course."

Christine McVie's Biggest Obstacle To Fleetwood Mac Return

(Classic Rock) Christine McVie says her fear of flying was the biggest obstacle to overcome as she prepared to rejoin Fleetwood Mac. The keyboard player will return to the fold with the band on their On With The Show tour which starts in Minneapolis on September 30.

It will be the first time since 1998 that the Rumours-era lineup of the band will perform together. McVie will join Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Stevie Nicks on stage.

But when the idea of her return was first mentioned last year, McVie had to face up to hear flying phobia, which meant she had been more or less confined to her English country home for years.

She tells Elle she saw a therapist to help with the phobia. The therapist told her to buy a ticket to Maui, where Fleetwood lives. But as Fleetwood was due in London, the pair met up and flew to Hawaii together.

Lombardo Rules Out Returning To Slayer

When former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo was asked about the possibility that he would ever return to the thrash metal giants, he gave a firm no.

"No. That's it. I'm done now," Lombardo told Metal Hammer. "I've got lots of other things on my plate and I now know that, when it comes to money, you don't have any friends in this business. I won't ever be going back."

Lombardo discussed how the chemistry with the other band members had become before he left the group, "We just saw each other before going onstage every night. You travel in different buses and hang out in different circles. It made it very hard to go onstage and have any sort of chemistry."

Classic Journey Video Recreated By Alt-Rockers Glass Delirium

Alt-rockers Glass Delirium travel back to the 1980s is their newly released shot for shot music video parody recreation of the Journey classic "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)".

Glass Delirium's Pat Anderson had this to say about the video, "You know a lot of bands cover this song, and they do a great job. It really is a great song! When the idea came up to have us do a shot for shot remake of the video, we lost it!

"When it came time to shoot the video, none of us could keep a straight face, with the mullet wigs, and horribly awesome wardrobe. Goodwill rocks by the way!

"Once we played the video next to the original music video, by Journey, we knew that we had something totally hilarious, and cool. I cant wait for everyone to see this!" Watch it here.

AC/DC Recorded New Album In Just 10 Days

(hennemusic) AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd is sharing an update on the band's new album, recorded this spring in Vancouver without founding member Malcolm Young.

"It was done in 10 days, and I've never played better," Rudd told Triple M radio in Sydney, Australia, describing the new music as "stellar." "I hope it's as good as I remember when I came away from the studio," he added. "It's pretty damn good."

Rudd is anxious to have fans hear the new album as soon as possible. "Usually you master something and wait a couple of weeks, and you go and have a listen to it," he says. "They do things a certain way - I think they're taking too long." here.

Playing Jimi Hendrix Saved Andre 3000

(Classic Rock) Andre Benjamin, aka Outkast's Andre 3000, says playing Jimi Hendrix in a biopic about the legendary guitarist saved him. The movie, rtitled Jimi: All Is By My Side, was written and directed by John Ridley and focuses on Hendrix's life and career between 1966-67.

It's considered controversial by some close to the guitar icon for containing violent scenes they insist never took place. But Benjamin tells the New York Times: "Playing Hendrix kind of saved me. I was in a not-so-great space, just in a dark place every day. I needed something to focus on to get me out of my depression and rut.

"Sometimes when you're alone, you can let yourself go. I knew if I got on a train with a lot of different people, then I couldn't let them down." More on this story and the trailer here.

Saxon's Biff Byford Launches Sci-Fi Inspired Concept Band

(Classic Rock) Saxon singer Biff Byford is fronting a new band inspired by a science fiction movie. The Scintilla Project will release their debut album The Hybrid on September 2, with its songs inspired by movie thriller Scintilla - set deep underground in the wilds of a former Soviet state, where strange genetic experiments are taking place.

The rest of the band is made up of drummer Lionel Hicks, bass player Anthony Ritchie and guitarist Andy Sneap. Byford got involved while recording Saxon's 19th album Call To Arms, when producer Toby Jepson introduced the singer to Scintilla producer Hicks. The original plan was for Saxon to record a song for the soundtrack, but it turned into a project in its own right.

Byford says: "As the film developed through production, our minds began working - maybe we could put together a concept album based on and inspired by the film."

The Beatles Voted America's Favorite Band

(Gibson) The Beatles have been named America's Favorite Band, according to a new Harris Poll. The Fab Four inched out Elvis Presley to snag the top spot on the list, which was conducted using information from an online poll that took place last month asking, "Who is your favorite singer/musician or band?" More than 2,300 people ages 18 and up filled out the poll.

Classic rockers Led Zeppelin and the Eagles also made the cut, coming in at No. 4 and No. 7, respectively. The Eagles actually tied three other performers for the No. 7 spot: Neil Diamond, Celine Dion and Garth Brooks.

Harris conducted the same poll in 2010, and that year, U2 took the top spot, with the Beatles and Elvis both at No. 3. U2 didn't make the top 10 this year, but we're guessing that's because fans are just waiting for new music.

Looking at demographics, the millennial generation, ages 18-37, picked Beyonc as their favorite performer. Gen-Xers ranging in age from 38 to 49 opted for Metallica. Baby Boomers, ages 50-68, picked the Beatles. Those 69 and over voted for Willie Nelson as their favorite. Check out the top 10 here.

A Look Back At AC/DC's Back in Black

(Gibson) When the record landed in stores in August 1980, there was no picture of the band on the LP sleeve. In fact, there was no picture at all. Just an ominous black 12-inch square embossed with the name AC/DC and the words Back in Black. The somber-looking package contained one of the greatest rock albums of the '80s-an album that, 27 years later, still makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, even more so if you know the story of how Back in Black came to be.

A new decade had dawned and AC/DC were riding high on the success of 1979's Highway to Hell. Six months after its release, a gap in their hectic touring schedule found AC/DC back in London, the Australian band's adopted home base, where they began to write the follow-up album.

It was in London, during the writing sessions, on February 19, 1980, when lead guitarist Angus Young got a phone call from one of singer Bon Scott's many lady friends. "She was hysterical and trying to get some information," Young says. "She'd heard Bon was dead."

Bon dead? Young didn't believe it. Everyone knew Scott was indestructible. From their early days playing the tough bar circuit in Australia where Bon out-battled the clientele, to the recent incident when he'd dived out a four-story window and into a pool on a $10 dare, he always emerged with a grin on his face, a girl on his arm, and a drink in his hand. And then the guitarist's phone rang again. The band's manager was calling from a South London hospital-he'd just identified Bon's body. After a night on the town with friends, the hard partying, happy Scott had passed out and choked on his vomit. The coroner's report would later say that he had "drunk himself to death." Young was devastated.

Later, at the funeral, Bon's parents told the band that they had to find a new singer and carry on. But the band members weren't interested in carrying on. They weren't interested in anything. As Angus recalls, "Everyone was walking around in silence. Nobody knew what to do. It was hard to take in. We were so depressed." Angus' brother and AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young agrees. A pall of depression hung over them all.

For several weeks, the brothers couldn't bring themselves to even pick up their guitars. Then finally, just to take their minds off the loss, they decided to book a rehearsal studio and play some of the bits and pieces they'd been working on with Bon. Which led to them thinking about the wishes of Scott's parents and discussion of finding a singer.

AC/DC's manager had put together a list of potential new vocalists, which up until then they had refused to look at. But then they noticed that one of those names was of a singer that Bon had been raving about for months: Brian Johnson from the Northern England band Geordie.

When Angus and Malcolm invited Johnson to come hang out for a while and sing, there was no hesitation. Johnson was a huge AC/DC fan. His chemistry with the band was instant, and he left with a new job and a plane ticket to the Bahamas, where producer Mutt Lange was waiting for them at Compass Point Studio. Recalls Malcolm, "We got the title for the album before we'd even written a tune. Angus said, 'Why not call it Back in Black? Make a black album cover and then it's for Bon.'"

But Back in Black wasn't just a tribute album, a wake for their much-missed friend-it was a declaration of intent that they'd decided to go on. Not to replace him-Bon was irreplaceable-but to start a new phase with a singer whose powerful high wail worked just as well with AC/DC's trademark sound as Bon's sleazy, bluesy growl.

It's that multi-faceted mix of intension and tensions, anger and spirit that makes Back in Black so lethally good-all that turbulence, the barely suppressed anger and pain and the fierce will to continue.

When AC/DC first heard the playbacks, their reaction, says Malcolm, was, "This is a monster!" Sure enough, it was. Not just the tone of the album and its lean power but its songs, which include three of the best rock anthems ever: the rousing title track, the brooding "Hell's Bells," and the ultimate party song "You Shook Me All Night Long."

Paul Di'Anno Says He Hits Notes Rob Halford Can No Longer Hit

(Classic Rock) Former Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di'Anno insists his voice is in better condition than Judas Priest singer Rob Halford's - because of his seven-nights-a-week touring schedule.

Di'Anno believes his performances are better than they've ever been, even though he's still drinking and smoking. Di'Anno, who earlier this week confirmed his retirement plans had been shelved, tells Mitch Lafon:

"My voice is actually getting better. I'm hitting notes I've never hit in quite a long time. I'm hitting notes Rob Halford can't hit any more. And the reason is I don't fuss over it. Some people go, 'I've got a slight cough; let's cancel the whole show.'" More here.

Opeth Feel No Affinity With Metal Bands

(Prog) Opeth are comfortable with their position in today's metal scene, but say they feel no affinity with metal bands, especially modern ones. The Swedish prog metallers released new album Pale Communion this week and frontman Mikael Akerfeldt says he's pleased with how the band have developed their sound over the years.

He tells SpazioRock: "I don't know anything else than the metal world, because that's where we are. But we're trying to push the boundaries a little bit. Mostly musically, but also sound-wise.

"We don't like to belong in a group. We wanna be on our own. But we are OK with being defined within the metal scene, because that's our origins. Our roots come from real extreme metal, and gradually we have moved away from that. But we still feel we belong to the metal scene, but we don't feel an affinity with bands in the metal scene, and definitely not the sound from the metal scene of today." More here.

Singled Out: Hero For Today's All You Wanted

Today the members of the Orange County band Hero For Today tells us about the title track and the lead single from their forthcoming "All You Wanted" EP. Here is the story:

"All You Wanted" is one of our favorite songs on our new EP. It was actually the last song written for this EP. We messed around with this idea we had for a while, but never really thought anything of it until we made a demo. Once we completed the demo, this song really came to life - it became everybody's favorite track. We knew this was a song that absolutely needed to be included on the new EP.

"All You Wanted" is a song with tons of energy and angst. Its upbeat punk groove drives the song, while the big guitars and bass give the song its power. John Tessin, the drummer of Hero for Today had a great idea of having a guitar solo that followed the vocal melody. We really struggled to find the appropriate place for it and one day stumbled upon starting the song with it. It was a perfect fit and the ultimate punch in the face to start off this track and the new EP.

The lyrics for "All You Wanted" are about people who somehow believe they are superior to you and others. It's about the people who get under your skin and drive you crazy. The lyrics are a reflection of the thoughts that run through my head whenever I encounter a cocky, self-centered person. I try to always keep everything very real and honest when writing lyrics. There's no need to sugar coat things or try making your lyrics sound too poetic. I just want people to relate and understand how I really feel about things going on in my life. "All You Wanted" quickly became a real crowd favorite at every show - our fans go crazy once they hear the opening drums kick in!
