Static-X Frontman Wayne Static Dead at 48

Static-X frontman Wayne Static, real name Wayne Richard Wells, died in his sleep at his home this weekend, according to a spokesperson. He was 48 year-old.

A cause of death has not been revealed but the spokesperson, Nancy B. Sayle of VQPR, said in a statement that his death was "not a drug related incident or an O. D."

She provided these details in the statement, "[Static and his wife Tera Wray were] getting ready to leave for a Fall/Winter tour [Saturday] morning. They were to have left the night before on Halloween, but decided they would head out early in the morning November 1st.

"The couple, known for partying heavy, had left hard drugs in 2009 and had not touched them since. Static's first solo album - Pighammer - was a tribute to his new non-drug life and hoped it would help others to get clean from hard chemical drugs."

Wayne's former Static-X bandmate Brent Ashley posted the following message online, "Yes it's true, Wayne Static has passed away. I can't tell you how upsetting this is to everyone that's ever known him, worked with him or even just met him as a fan of his music. Wayne had a great heart and was a pretty easy guy to get along, not to mention extremely talented!

"This is a total loss and it rendered me speechless the last few hours. I'm honored to have shared the stage with him for a few years and gotten to know him on a personal level. You will be missed old friend... RIP"

Several other members of the metal community have paid their respects to Static via online postings. Ozzy Osbourne wrote, "I'm very sad to hear of Wayne Static's passing. We spent a lot of time together on several Ozzfest tours. His passing is a tragic loss. My love to his family and friends."

Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor wrote, "I am absolutely devastated to hear about Wayne Static's death. A good man and a good friend. My thoughts are with his family and friends."

Kill Devil Hill and Pantera's Rex Brown wrote, "I'm so sorry to hear the news of Wayne Static's passing. Static-X opened for PANTERA several times back in the day & Wayne was always very to himself & a kind soul !! RIP Wayne !"

Fear Factory's Dino Cazares posted, "Wayne was a great guy and songwriter. It sucks to lose a friend to something that you wish you could've helped him for."

Kill Devil Hill and Type O Negative's Johnny Kelly said, "Very Sad to hear about Wayne's passing. I've had the opportunity to tour with Static X a couple times throughout the years and he was always a nice guy. My heart goes out to his family, bandmates and crew."

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis posted, "Rest in peace, Wayne. I'm speechless right now. I'm losing too many of my friends. I'll see you on the other side, brother."

Gregg Allman Dropped From Biopic Death Lawsuit

(Radio.com) Gregg Allman has been dropped from a civil lawsuit stemming from the death of Sarah Jones, a 27-year-old camera assistant who died on the set of Midnight Rider, the Gregg Allman biopic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The incident took place on Feb. 20 of this year, while the crew was shooting a sequence on railroad tracks. Seven others were also injured in the accident. Production of the film shut down shortly afterward.

Allman, executive producer Michael Lehman and the film's distributor Open Road Films were also dropped from the civil lawsuit, according to an announcement by the Jones' attorney, Jeff Harris.

"This firm was hired by Richard and Elizabeth Jones to find out exactly what happened to their daughter, what decisions were made that led to that fateful day and to determine, and ultimately hold accountable, those who were involved," Harris wrote in a statement. "After reviewing the many thousands of pages of documents, and other information we have obtained through the legal discovery process, it is clear that Mr. Allman and Mr. Lehman had no involvement in any of the decisions that resulted in Sarah's death.

"Our investigation has also shown that, in this case, Open Road Films was not directly involved in the poor decisions that led to this horrific event and the tragic loss of Sarah's life. As a result, we are dismissing all claims against the three parties." Read more here.

Sammy Hagar Shares Bad News About Chickenfoot Plans

(hennemusic) Sammy Hagar is telling fans not to expect any more albums by his supergroup Chickenfoot. The project - which includes guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith - released their self-titled debut in 2009 and their second album, "Chickenfoot III", in 2011.

Hagar now tells Rolling Stone, "Joe is my favorite writer to work with since Eddie [Van Halen]. I'd rather write a record with him than anyone else, but I don't see any reason to make a new record.

"Going through the whole experience with a record label, and then going out and doing 150 interviews, a big tour and waking up at 4:00 a.m. to go on Howard Stern all to sell 35,000 CDsIt starts to feel like, 'Hmmmm. Is this pay for play?'"

"I mean, I love making music," he adds. "But doing it on Chickenfoot's level means spending a half million on a record. We write and record for six months. It's a lot of work, and then to not sell many records. It's disappointing. I don't like being disappointed. I like winning."

Lemmy From Motorhead Was Close To Death

(TeamRock Radio) Motorhead mainman Lemmy has admitted he was "close to death" during his last round of surgery - and it was the only moment he doubted he'd survive his 2013 health issues.

He describes his life as "undeniably less pleasurable" since he was forced to clean up his lifestyle. And he's recalled how he faced his final cigarette after 57 years of smoking.

The 68-year-old spent much of last year recuperating from a series of health setbacks which included several weeks in hospital after he suffered internal bleeding. He'd earlier been fitted with a defibrillator to deal with heart problems.

Lemmy tells Lust For Life: "During my last surgery I was close to death. It was the only moment I was stalked by the devil called doubt. I wondered if I'd make it.

"I'm not afraid of death - I often sing about it. So I wasn't shaking in my bed, but I did have the feeling I wasn't done yet. I still wanted to do shows and make records. That feeling pulled me through all this." Read more here.

Ozzy Explains The End Of Black Sabbath

Ozzy Osbourne shared some of the details of what he calls the "last hurrah" for Black Sabbath which he says will be the end of the legendary band and also expressed his hope that Bill Ward will return to the group for the farewell.

Ozzy tells Billboard that Black Sabbath are planning their "last hurrah...Then it's no more Sabbath at all. We're disbanding the name and everything. They don't want to tour anymore. I get it. But I love it. I'm gonna continue my solo thing."

He was also asked about the possibility of original drummer Bill Ward taking part and he said, "I would absolutely love that. We all would. "We were all sad he didn't come the last time. But I don't deal with the dough and the business side; that's my wife's job. The thing is, when you've got four guys with four different agendas and managers, it gets pretty crazy. I just go, 'You do what you've got to do, Sharon. I'll do what I've got to do.' "

Ozzy also discussed the reasoning for the release of his new "Memoirs Of A Madman" He told Billboard, "I've been not doing my solo stuff for quite a while now - I've been touring with Sabbath, so I just wanted to let everybody know I haven't stopped doing my solo stuff.

"I'm going to do one more Black Sabbath tour, one more album with Black Sabbath, and it'll take about two or three years before I release solo stuff again. So Memoirs Of A Madman is just to say to the fans that I haven't stopped."

Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell May Be Released Early From Hospital

(hennemusic) Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott is sharing an update on Vivian Campbell's health status as the guitarist undergoes a stem cell transplant this fall in his ongoing battle with cancer.

"The latest that I'm aware of with Viv," Elliott tells Billboard, "they were harvesting stem cells from him and do whatever they do in a Petry dish with them, and then they were gonna carpet bomb him with chemo for a week and he was gonna be kept in the hospital...Then they're gonna put the stem cells back in and do whatever they do, wave the magic wand and say 'Abracadabra.'"

"Hopefully by the middle of November they're gonna let him out," he added. "We were under the impression he would be in the hospital until Christmas, but the last email he sent me, which was about two weeks ago, said, 'It looks like I may be able to get out of here by mid-November.'"

Elliott says that he and band members "don't bombard him with emails and phone calls every day going 'How are you doing? How are you doing?' 'cause it's like saying, 'Has your hair grown any longer since yesterday?' It's a slow process, so you're best waiting." Read more here.

Ronnie Montrose Tribute Concert Announced

(hennemusic) Former Montrose singer Keith St. John has organized a tribute concert this week for bandmate and late guitarist Ronnie Montrose, who passed away in 2012.

Set for Thursday, November 6 at the Saddle Rack in Fremont, California, "Rock The Nation: Friends of Ronnie Montrose" will see St. John team up with Sammy Hagar guitarist Vic Johnson, Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta, former Alice Cooper/Ted Nugent bassist Chuck Wright and special guests to perform tunes by the late rock legend.

St. John first connected with Montrose in the late 1990s as a songwriting partner before becoming lead singer in 2002. "This is definitely not a tribute band," St. John tells Bestofbayarea.com.

"This is nobody trying to be like anyone from the original Montrose lineup, just four guys with strong connections to music and personally to Ronnie, who want to play the music we love to play. Every time I sing any of these songs live I can still feel Ronnie in the room. It is not a spooky or a spiritual thing but something that is inspired within me."

Slayer Save Fan's Car

(Classic Rock) Slayer fan Jake, who last week aimed to sell his car so he could afford tour tickets, has thanked the band after they stepped in. He released a spoof video advertising his 1997 Ford Escort, saying:

"Tickets aren't cheap. I know there are those who say I can't go there. Yes, I can I just have to sell this car." Frontman Tom Araya then appeared in a response clip, where he said: "The car's a piece of sh*t! Tell you what - we'll give you the tickets."

Stone Sour Reveal Covers Album Title

(TeamRock Radio) Stone Sour's upcoming covers album will be called Meanwhile In Burbank, frontman Corey Taylor has confirmed. And its completion marks a longtime ambition for the singer and his band.

He hasn't revealed any more details about the project, which was finally started earlier this month. But Taylor tells The Jasta Show: "We've been talking about it for ever, since the first album came out. We always wanted this - it's something we've always come back to. We never had the opportunity to do it and we just kind of said, 'Well, screw it.'"

The title was inspired by drummer Roy Margoya's studio in Burbank, where recording session have taken place. Taylor says: "There's no pressure; you're just having fun. You're going back to these songs you just love to listen to, not only sing."

Bring Me The Horizon Explain Controversial Song Decision

(TeamRock Radio) Bring Me The Horizon have been forced to explain why they used rapper Orifice Vulgatron from Foreign Beggars on Don't Look Down. The track was specially written for the re-scored soundtrack for the film Drive - but it's left some fans unhappy.

One wrote on the band's Facebook page: "My ears just stopped bleeding," while another said: "Where is the real Bring Me The Horizon?" But the band say they wanted to experiment and do something different as their other tracks didn't fit with the vibe of the film.

They say: "We are really proud of what we created but at the same time we understand people's confusion and panic after hearing the track. We were approached by BBC Radio One to score a piece of music for a re-score of the movie Drive. If you've seen it, I'm sure you'll agree neither anything from our previous albums or Drown would have fit very well with the vibe of the movie. So we decided to create a piece of music that did justice to the amazing scene we were given.

"We took the opportunity to make something completely different, something we wouldn't usually do - although I feel that doesn't really make sense any more because we never do the same thing twice." Read more and listen to the track here.

"To our fans: the last thing we want to do is let you down, and we are devastated that we can't be part of an amazing tour with one of our favorite bands. We're ready to get on stage - but the cancellation is completely unavoidable, despite every attempt by us to make it happen."

Napalm Death Set Release For New Album Apex Predator

(TeamRock Radio) Napalm Death have confirmed their 15th album is called Apex Predator - Easy Meat, and it's to be released on January 26 via Century Media. And frontman Mark 'Barney' Greenway has revealed the follow-up to 2012's Utilitarian was inspired by recent slave labour atrocities.

He says: "Sometimes you have to ponder long and hard for an album title. But following the Rana Plaza disaster of last year - the collapse of a textile sweatshop building in Bangladesh - it spurred me on to try and craft an expose of slave labour in the modern world, and the surrounding conditions propping it up.

"Some in power like to declare that slavery is consigned to the history books. But if you look beneath the surface it's alive and well in many different forms. It just has a different face now." Read more here.

Lynch Mob Releasing New Album Next Month

(Classic Rock) Lynch Mob will release their latest album titled Sun Red Sun in December, they've announced. The band have released a teaser video to mark the announcement.

The group features guitarist and mainman George Lynch, vocalist Oni Longan, bassist Robbie Crane and drummer Scot Coogan - the same lineup who recorded the Sound Mountain Sessions EP in 2012.

The album contains four remastered tracks from the EP, along with seven new songs, including a cover of Bad Company's Burnin' Sky. The title track has been written as a tribute to late Badlands and Black Sabbath frontman Ray Gillen, who died in 1993.

Longan tells The Double Stop: "I was brothers with Ray - he was a good dude and a great guy to me. He was an unbelievable talent. Sun Red Sun is written in the idea that I'm speaking for him and I'm speaking for me. Sun Red Sun, shine on me forever. You'll hear it in the lyrics when you hear the song. Ray is a dominant and principal meaning in the title of the album."

The findings show those who received music therapy displayed an increase in self-esteem and reduced depressive symptoms. Results also revealed an improvement in communication and interactive skills for those who received the additional treatment.

Betraying The Martyrs, Texas In July, Upon This Dawning Tour

(TeamRock Radio) Betraying The Martyrs will play seven UK dates next year, they've announced. Texas In July, Upon This Dawning and Make Them Suffer will join them on the road.

They appeared at Ghostfest in Leeds earlier this year and at last month's Breakout in Brighton. Now they'll tour the UK as part of a wider 31-date European jaunt.

The French-based band released their second album Phantom earlier this year via Listenable Records and frontman Aaron Matts said there was nothing he would change about the record.

He told Grave Press: "Our sound, I don't think anyone else is doing it. There's not many other bands that are doing modern metalcore with that black metal underline to it. It's just our sound - it's more matured, more efficient live, better to listen to and the lyrics are clearer. I'm just really happy about it. There's nothing I'd change."

Led Zeppelin Live Aid Reunion A Disaster For Phil Collins

(Classic Rock) Phil Collins has described his 1985 appearance with Led Zeppelin at Live Aid a disaster - and says he would have walked off if he thought he'd have got away with it.

And he knew he'd made the wrong choice seconds after the charity performance began. Collins, who worked on Plant's first two solo albums, tells Q: "I thought it was just going to be low-key and we'd all get together and have a play. But something happened between that conversation and the day - it became a Led Zeppelin reunion.

"I turned up and I was a square peg in a round hole. Robert was happy to see me, but Jimmy wasn't." He admits to realizing "this is a mistake" almost as soon as the band started playing. "You could sense I wasn't welcome, and Tony was not making life easy," he recalls. "If I could have walked off, I would have done. But then we'd all be talking about why Phil Collins walked off Live Aid - so I just stuck it out." Read more here.

Slash, Peter Gabriel Appear In Arcade Fire's New Short Film

(Radio.com) Arcade Fire has shared a truly festive new short film, titled Festi, in celebration of all things spooky. Also, it recalls their less-spooky 2011 summer festival tour.

The 21-minute film is directed by "Noreen Bauble," which is just a moniker that Arcade Fire uses, and features guest appearances from Peter Gabriel, The National, James Murphy, Andrew Garfield, and Slash.

The plot of the film centers around Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler's 27th birthday and the "27 Club curse" that strikes musicians on that perilous year of their lives. Truly a scary concept for any musician in that year of their life.

Even more scary: Jim Morrison's Ghost coming into play. Arcade Fire recently wrapped their Reflektor tour and now are plotting their next move. Nice to see they are remaining active in non-traditional ways between projects.

Odd Reunion For Whitesnake Star

(Classic Rock) Latest Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra has recalled the "odd" experience of starting work with Reb Beach after having previously replaced him in Night Ranger.

And while he's not allowed to discuss the contents of the follow-up to 2011 album Forevermore, he hints that it's "really cool." He'd joined Night Ranger in 2008 after Beach left, and was confirmed as a member of David Coverdale's band in August, following Doug Aldrich's decision to end his 11-year stint in May.

Hoekstra tells MyGlobalMind: "Reb I met when he was helping me learn the Nightranger songs. He's a great guy and a great player. I wanted to explore the opportunity and make sure it was going to be a great fit.

"I didn't know if I'd get on the record and David would say, 'Maybe he's not our guy,' because our meeting was very brief at the end of May. It was important to do it the right way - not just rush in and go after a couple of hours, 'I've got a gig!'"

Bruce Springsteen Didn't Read Grapes Of Wrath Before Tom Joad

(Radio.com) When an artist references a famous book or movie or album in their own work, is it safe to say said artist has at least read the book or seen the movie or heard the album?

This is the question that is raised upon news (as revealed in an interview with the New York Times) that Bruce Springsteen had never read The Grapes of Wrath when he wrote and recorded the song/album "The Ghost of Tom Joad," named after the central character of the John Steinbeck novel.

After being asked what books he was embarrassed to have not read, Springsteen was frank: "I read The Grapes of Wrath very late, long after I'd written the song "Ghost of Tom Joad." However, it ended up being everything I'd hoped it to be. I haven't read East of Eden yet, and I'd like to."

He tells Music Radar: "I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we're both very blues orientated artists - we draw from a certain amount of soul in the way we approach things. I think that's where our chemistry really lies - I don't think we've ever really had an argument.

"There have certainly been times when there might be a part of a lyric or an idea where it's a case of, 'I'm not sure about that' or, 'I'm coming up with something like this, I'm not reacting to it.' The cool thing about that is we've both been in this dog and pony show long enough to know what's going to happen.

"You just don't take it personally - it's part of the filtration process and part of why I want to work with this person, because I trust their instincts." Read more here.

Bad Company's Paul Rodgers Still Learning

(TeamRock Radio) Former Free and Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers insists he's still learning, despite being in the music business for decades. And he says he's managed to keep his voice strong because he's looked after himself down the years.

He tells Indie Power: "As the years go by, I start to realize how blessed and lucky I am. I take care of myself - I think you sing with your whole body, it's not just the voice.

"As a young kid, I went through that whole stage where temptation was there in front of me and one overindulges when you're younger and you pay the price in later years. But I always realised how important it was for me to take care of myself and my voice if I was going to have a voice when I was older - and I'm glad I did, ultimately because I'd like to think I'm still learning."

He continues: "It's all still very fresh for me - it's still new. When I get up on stage with other musicians, it's like for the first time." Read more here.

Mark Tremonti Sings Van Halen's Praises

(TeamRock Radio) Creed and Alter Bridge guitarist Mark Tremonti believes that Wolfgang Van Halen's bass playing will take his second solo album to the next level. Guitarist Eric Friedman handled bass duties on the Creed and Alter Bridge man's 2012 title All I Was before Van Halen became part of the live lineup. And the band leader believes things have moved up a notch after the bassist struck up a strong partnership with drummer Garrett Whitlock.

Tremonti says: "He's such a quick learner - he gets everything in two seconds. He came in a few days late for our last writing session and we were kidding with him that the new songs were tough and he'd have to catch up. But he learned them in two seconds.

"From the first record to the second everyone's going to notice a big difference on the rhythm section side of things. He's the best of the best out there on bass. It's going to make a big difference."
