Day in Rock Report for 10/07/2014

AC/DC Member Misses Video Shoot

AC/DC filmed two new music videos this past weekend in London, but one member was reportedly missing from the second day of the video shoot that took place in front of fans on October 4th.

Blogger Bob Fiddaman reports in a new article that drummer Phil Rudd was not at the shoot for a video for a future single release from AC/DC's new album, "Rock Or Bust".

He writes, "The band were introduced and each member walked down to the small round stage. Unfortunately, AC/DC drummer, Phil Rudd, had been called away at the last minute, his place being filled by Bob Richards (Shogun, Adrian Smith Band The Wild Family, Man)."

So far there has been no official explanation for Rudd's absence. Last month Rudd's 20-years in the making solo album 'Head Job' had a big first week of release in Australia, entering the ARIA album chart at number 22.

Rockett Addresses Poison Feud Rumors

(TeamRock Radio) Poison drummer Rikki Rockett has moved to shoot down rumors of a feud with frontman Bret Michaels. Speculation mounted that the pair had fallen out after Michaels discussed the chances of a tour next year.

He named bandmates CC Deville and Bobby Dall but didn't mention Rockett when he said: "We can't go out without all of the original guys - it's got to be CC, Bobby and myself."

But Rockett tweeted over the weekend: "In regard to the interview, Bret's my brother. He's got my back. I've got his. I'm sure it's all good." Both the frontman and the drummer have recently talked up the chances of Poison hitting the road in 2015. Read more here.

Rare John Lennon Guitar Going Up For Auction

(hennemusic) A guitar that John Lennon played on the recording of The Beatles hit, "Paperback Writer", is headed to auction in London next month. Issued as a single in May of 1966, "Paperback Writer" went on to hit No. 1 in the US, the UK and several other countries.

The Telegraph reports Lennon gave his Gretsch 6120 guitar to his cousin, David Birch, in November 1967, a year after the hit single was produced in April 1966 at London's Abbey Road studios as part of the sessions for the band's "Revolver" album.

"I was just cheeky enough to ask John for one of his spare guitars," said Birch, who was trying to start his own band at the time. "I had my eye on a blue Fender Stratocaster that was lying in the studio but John suggested the Gretsch and gave it to me as we were talking."

Judas Priest's Rob Halford Frustrated He Can't Hit The Same Notes

(TeamRock Radio) Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford admits he'd like to be able to hit the notes he could 40 years ago. But the Metal God, who recently stated he could still scream his head off, says he's not holding back on his vocal delivery and that the band are sounding "unbelievable."

He tells One On One With Mitch Lafon: "I'd like to feel that what I'm trying to do on Redeemer Of Souls are the best examples of my abilities right now. I'm going to places that I can go to - I'm not pulling back in any areas.

"I get frustrated. I freely admit that I wish I could do the stuff I could do when I was laying down tracks in 1974 or 1975, but that's just ridiculous - I don't think any singer can requalify those moments again. You go out and do your best.

"We've been jamming in the UK, rehearsing the setlist for the band's North American tour and it sounds unbelievable. The new material, especially, is just roaring out of the band."

Emperor Frontman Rules Out More Reunion Shows

(TeamRock Radio) Emperor frontman Ihsahn says there are no further plans for reunion shows - and that they tried hard to resist the temptation of big money offers and easy nostalgia trips.

Instead, the Norwegian outfit tried to stick to the point they wanted to make in 20 shows that marked the 20th anniversary of debut album In The Nightside Eclipse. And now that's been achieved, there's nothing else on the cards at the moment.

Ihsahn tells Scuzz TV: "I didn't want to do the same thing over again and keep reuniting. The focus is not just nostalgia. But In The Nightside Eclipse was kind of our starting point, so it's a big deal.

"The main goal was to keep it very limited and not get greedy. Obviously there's quite a lot of money involved." Read more here.

At The Gates Singer Explains New Album Decision

(TeamRock Radio) At The Gates vocalist Toams Lindberg says the band fostered an attitude of "kill your darlings" while writing upcoming album At War With Reality. And he believes doing the work in secret gave them greater scope to create the best material in their career.

The record will be launched on October 27 via Century Media, and comes after the band insisted they wouldn't release new music following their 2007 reunion.

Lindberg tells Horns Up Rocks: "We didn't announce we were doing a record until we had all the material. We wrote in secrecy, so we weren't stressed about what other people might think or how they'd react.

"We had an idea that we should try anything that comes into our heads - but also that anything could be thrown away. So it was a lot of 'kill your darlings.' Everybody had to agree about everything that was recorded."

Atreyu Undergoing Total Reincarnation

(TeamRock Radio) Atreyu drummer and vocalist Brandon Saller says the music they're currently writing marks a reincarnation of the band. And despite previous comments that their next album would be similar to 2004's The Curse, it's developed into something different.

The Californian metalcore outfit are working on the follow-up to fifth outing Congregation Of The Damned, which was launched in 2009 before they went on hiatus. They confirmed they'd regrouped earlier this year, and last month released new track So Others May Live.

Saller tells MusicFeeds: "I feel like Atreyu is most like Atreyu somewhere in the middle of The Curse and A Death-Grip On Yesterday - and I feel like the new stuff doesn't sound like that at all.

"We weren't really focusing on what era, or what kind of record, we should go back to and emulate. It was just like, 'Let's give 100% of everything inside of us that we need to get out.'"

He adds: "It's blistering. It's a total reincarnation of my band. It's as heavy as can be and aggressive as can be - definitely a punch in the face for heavy music in general."

Biohazard Frontman Reveals New Album Plans

(TeamRock Radio) Biohazard frontman Billy Graziadei says the band's new album will be out in "early too mid 2015." The band are working on what will be their 10th album and the follow-up to 2012's Reborn In Defiance.

Graziadei tells Scuzz: "Right now we're working on a new record that we plan to have out in early to mid 2015 on Nuclear Blast. We're still putting it together. It's pretty dope.

"Biohazard is not the type of band that says, 'Okay, we're gonna record next week.' We just keep on going, and when it's ready, it's ready." The singer also talks about a one-off gig in a tiny club in the Netherlands, put on as a thank-you to local fans who usually travel hundreds of miles to see Biohazard. Stream the interview here.

Dimmu Borgir's Orchestra DVD Closer To Release

(TeamRock Radio) Dimmu Borgir's long-awaited orchestra-backed live DVD will be released next year, according to guitarist Silenoz. The Norwegian symphonic black metal outfit recorded an exclusive live show in Oslo in May 2011, complete with 53 members of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and a 30-strong cast from the Schola Cantorum choir.

It was aired on Norwegian TV and recorded for a DVD release called Forces Of The Northern Night, which has been on the back burner ever since. Silenoz tells Scuzz: "It should have been out the same year, but it got put on hold. But it sounds really good. We remixed and remastered it.

"Everything is just sitting there and waiting. It will hopefully be out by the beginning of next year. Certain things have to fall into place, and it's not really up to us. But once we have that out, we can have a new release that we can promote and tour with, so I hope we can sort it out as soon as possible."

Dani Filth Reveals Cradle Of Filth Album Details

(TeamRock Radio) Dani Filth has revealed the names of seven tracks from Cradle Of Filth's upcoming studio album. The frontman recently revealed the band would return to the studio in November to start recording the follow-up to 2012's The Manticore And Other Horrors, which has the working title Hammer Of The Witches. They hope to launch the album in June 2015.

Filth tells Metal Chaos: "The album is 80% finished and we have a lot of material that sounds brilliant. It has a little bit of everything - very cool twin guitar work and very fast thrash parts almost like deathcore, but it's very dark and symphonic.

"Some of the song titles are Enshrined In Crematoria, Misery Code, Yours Immortaly, Achingly Beautiful, Dantiesque, Blackest Magic In Practice and Deflowering The Maiden Head/Displeasuring The Goddess."

Meanwhile, Filth's side-project Devilment launch their debut album The Great And Secret Show on October 31 via Nuclear Blast. The album features a guest appearance from Jackass man Bam Margera, who appears on a cover of Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning. Read what he had to say here.

Trent Reznor Explains Lack Of Hooks In NIN Songs

(TeamRock Radio) Trent Reznor says his method of songwriting often leads to tunes that "aren't that catchy." The Nine Inch Nails mainman admits his "vision" of how a song should turn out sometimes takes precedent over how catchy it ends up.

Reznor wrote the soundtrack for David Fincher's new film Gone Girl starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, out now. An he says he takes the same attitude to writing movie scores as he does to penning NIN hits.

Reznor tells CBS: "With Nine Inch Nails I realise that a lot of times my strategy of writing a pop song isn't to start with a hook and mechanically try to make this product that's catchy.

"It's more that I start with a feeling or sometimes a visual, and then I try to dress that visual with sound, and a song comes out the other end. That's probably why my songs aren't that catchy."

Black Spiders Announce Winter Tour

(TeamRock Radio) English rockers Black Spiders have announced a UK winter tour. The band, frontman Pete 'Spider' Spiby, drummer/bassist Si Atkinson and guitarists Andy 'Ozzy' Lister and Mark Thomas, will hit the road in December for six gigs - and they've asked fans to choose 10 tracks to make up the setlist. Vote here.

But despite the announcement, some fans were disappointed more dates weren't added, forcing Lister to respond on Facebook. He said: "We would love to play everywhere but the reality is it just isn't always possible. Whether it's because the venues don't have a workable slot or any other number of reasons, it isn't because we've made a conscious decision not to play somewhere.

"We appreciate you sticking by us and allowing us to continue being a band. Rest assured, we'll do our best to come back and visit any and all of the hamlets and settlements in the new year.

"We might even find time for another album." Check out the tour dates here.

Jon Bon Jovi Revisits Tommy and Gina from 'Livin' on a Prayer'

(Radio.com) The latest installment of Radio.com's Minimation series, where they animate classic WNEW-FM interviews, is taken from a 2010 interview with Jon Bon Jovi, where he discusses two characters from one of his biggest hits.

Bruce Springsteen will probably always be New Jersey's favorite son. But, by the '80s, he'd expanded his view to the entire country on albums like Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. During that decade, there was nothing more "Jersey" than Bon Jovi, and none of Jon Bon Jovi's lyrics spoke to Jerseyites more than "Livin' on a Prayer," telling the tale of Tommy and Gina.

But really, "Livin' on a Prayer" resonated far beyond the Garden State: 1986's Slippery When Wet, the album which featured "Livin'," (as well as "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Never Say Goodbye") has gone 12x Platinum. As Jon says in this interview, "A lot of people related to this song as if they were these two people."

He says that he later returned to Tommy and Gina (without actually mentioning them by name) on "Born to Be My Baby" on the followup album, 1988's New Jersey; after that, they were name-dropped in the monster hit "It's My Life" from 2000's Crush.

Scallon says he makes his living out of his YouTube channel, telling Billboard: "The War Ensemble video was the one that really took off. It's a lot of fun so I've been doing it since."

Steven Wilson Releases New Studio Video

(TeamRock Radio) Steven Wilson has released a video of his solo band at work on the follow-up to acclaimed 2013 release The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories).

The six-minute clip was filmed at AIR Studios in London by artist Lasse Hoile and includes some of the music set to appear on the album, expected early next year.

Wilson says: "Generally this album has much less of the jazz element that the last record had. In some ways it seems like the next step from The Raven. But whereas The Raven was fairly consistent in tone, I'm looking again at bringing in some other elements from my musical repertoire.

"We've got electronic music on the album, and straightforward - for me - pop tunes." Watch the new studio video here.

Devin Townsend Project Streaming New Song Deathray

(TeamRock Radio) It is a well established fact in the world of heavy music that no one does unhinged metallic mayhem like Devin Townsend. And, true to form, Uncle Dev has excelled himself once again on the tour-de-force of intergalactic lunacy that is Z2, the sequel to 2007's Ziltoid The Omniscient and arguably the most gloriously OTT record that the Canadian genius has ever recorded.

To get a taste of what Dev has been doing while the rest of the planet has been looking the other way, check out the new video for Deathray, one of the highlights of the Ziltoidian half of the new album (FYI, the other half is a considerably less demented collection of Devin Townsend Project anthems).

When it comes to balls-out Poozonian riff attacks, with added coffee and bottom burps, no one in the universe comes remotely close. Hail Ziltoid! Watch the video here.
