Night Ranger Feared Losing Brad Gillis To Ozzy Osbourne

Night Ranger feared they would have to find a replacement for Brad Gillis after they witnessed the guitarist perform live with Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s.

Gillis was recruited by the Black Sabbath vocalist to help him finish his world tour in support of his "Diary Of A Madman" album in the wake of Randy Rhoads tragic death in March of 1982.

Brad was featured on Ozzy's double live album "Speak of The Devil" which featured performances of classic Black Sabbath songs, and was reportedly recorded due to a contractual obligation.

In a new interview with the Rock Brigade Podcast, Night Ranger's Jack Blades reflected on the band's reaction to seeing Gillis play with Osbourne. He recalled, "We had our record deal and Brad got a call to go off with Ozzy. We were waiting for him to come back. Ozzy was doing a live show for Westwood One or King Biscuit Flower Hour or something.

"We had not seen Brad playing with Ozzy so [Night Ranger drummer Kelly Keagy] and I went to the show. He sounded so f***ing goodhe sounded so huge. Kelly and l looked at each other and said, 'He's not coming back. We are going to have to find another guitar player.'" Listen to the full interview here.

Korn Did Not Intend To Pioneer New Music Style With Debut

Korn guitarist Brian Head Welch reveals in a new interview with Wikimetal that the numetal veterans did not intend to pioneer a new style of music when they first hit the scene with they debut album.

Head was asked if they intended to create a new genre or if their style was a natural reaction to some of the music they were listening to at the time. He responded, "I think it just happened natural, but I think it was a little of both. Because we were big fans of that type of music, we listened to, from Cypress Hill to Nine Inch Nails, and that type of industrial stuff too, to like Soundgarden and Faith No More and Metallica.

"So we wanted to see people hop up and down and mush. When we wrote the songs, we were thinking about that. And then Jonathan he loved just being weird and not sounding like your average singer, so he was just always a freak.

"And I think on that album he sounded like a freak but at the same time he was very real and honest and raw and full of emotions, he would just open himself and say 'come and look inside'. So I think all of that stuff mixed together, but sometimes it was intentional and other times it just happened, because all of those sounds were just poured into us being fans of different types of music." Robyn Hitchcock Takes A Look Back With New Music Video

Robyn Hitchcock has released a new music video for his track "Rayd & The Wires." The song comes from his forthcoming self-titled album, which is set to hit stores on April 21st.

Hitchcock shared the following background details for the new clip, "This video is a collage of years and Hitchcocks, assembled by Jeremy Dylan from archive trolleybus footage; from my family's home movies; and from film he shot of me recently.

"I'm singing the song on a tram in Melbourne, Australia about a trolleybus ride I took with my late father Rayd in Reading, England in 1964. In these clips Rayd, resplendent in early 1970s porno moustache, is younger than the present-day me is now. My current self is also in there perving over some beautiful vintage trams in San Francisco.

"There's a glimpse of 13- year-old me stepping out of a boat to greet my sister Fleur, who now in later life is an author and incidentally supplied Jeremy with the old family film. And 39-year-old me peers for a second from a weeping elm tree at Rayd's wake in 1992. His favourite folk band, the Yetties from the West of England, gave us all a free show - what a night! Rayd liked a nice tune. This would probably have embarrassed him, given what a distant English family we were. But his spirit loves acknowledgement, I like to think: and I'm sure he lives through me as fully as any ghost. On ya, dad!" Watch the video here.

Singled Out: Trollfest's Spelunking Sisters

Trollfest recently released their new album "Helluva" and to celebrate we asked Dr. Leif Kjonnsfleis to tell us about the song "Spelunking Sisters" from the new effort. Here is the story:

Hello! This is the good doctor here and I will tell you the background story for my first song on "Helluva", called "Spelunking Sisters."

Trollbank and Mr. Seidel usually writes most of the stuff we release, and I've been wanting to catch up with them for some time. There is always this healthy competition between the three of us on who can write the best sh*t. So finally I think I managed to make my mark!

I came up with the main melody at work, actually. What's my job, you say? Well, I work as a kindergarten teacher, wouldn't you know! There was a period where I danced a lot with the kids, and my specialty was a waltz. I would pick up a child and do a couple of laps, great fun! But the first time I initiated this I had no song. Every dance has to have a song, right?! So I had to improvise and come up with something on the spot. And what came out of me was the first melody in Spelunking Sisters! The difference was that it was in MAJOR. I played this little game for quite some time until I realised that I just had to Trollfest-ify it, considering I got such a kick out of it. I merely converted the melody to MINOR, and that was it! The rest of the song came very easily when I actually sat down to write it. I don't know where our obsession with writing in minor key comes from, but I guess major sounds too "happy" for metal, I don't know. In hindsight I philosophized some over this creative process and I realized, or confirmed for myself, that the best time to create something is when you are in a free flow of playfulness. And after that discovery this has been my mantra for creativity.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
