JUNE 2000 - METALLICA Vs. NAPSTER
For the last little while computer nuts and Metallica fans all over have been debating the validity of Napster. And some of these arguments have been downright hilarious, 99% from the Pro-Napster, Anti-Metallica angle. I love reading these rants, whether it be here on antiMUSIC or other places (such as chatrooms, etc), they crack me up. I mean, does this small percentage of people think that they’re gonna affect a damn thing when it comes to Metallica. I sure as hell hope not because they are just out-n-out wasting their time. I love hearing (or reading) these people say things like: “Metallica sold out..”, or, “Metallica is washed up”, or better yet “you better back off of Napster Metallica, or else you’ll lose all your fans.” That one is the best. There are actually people out there that think taking a small internet company to court is gonna make a damn difference to the core fans base such as myself, you gotta fucking be kidding me!!!

Ok, before I continue let me clarify. I’m not some hack who’s just writing this column because it’s THE hot issue among music fans right now. I’m writing this column because I am a die-hard Metallica fan. Have been since I was 12. The first CD I ever owned was “..And Justice”, that’s not the first Metallica CD I ever owned, that’s the first CD I ever owned PERIOD. Anyway, if it’s Metallica related I’ve either heard it or seen it. I have spent the last 11 years building a knowledge of Metallica that borders on obsessive. So, yes, you can group me with every other obsessive Metallica fan you know: (minus the fact I've never seen them in concert, but hey, the last time they were in my hometown of Charleston WV, I was too young to go. And I'm not gonna be able to afford a Summer Sanitarium trip so, oh well, that’s another rant for another day I suppose.) Anyway, now that I've shown that I do have a leg to stand on with this, I'll continue.....

So, Metallica goes after Napster because of copyright violations, well, that’s fine. Here’s a news flash for all you people out there down on Metallica: THEY ARE WELL WITHIN THERE RIGHT TO DO THIS! Look, when you get to be as big as Metallica you are gonna piss some people off when you do something like this, that’s expected. But, the main point is that Napster was costing them and hundreds of other artists money..no matter how you slice it and anyone will admit it, EVEN YOUR PRECIOUS FRED DURST!! Listen, off camera, where the mindless sheep can’t see or hear him I will guaren-damn-te you Fred Durst is as much opposed to Napster as Metallica, Dr Dre and anyone else that’s come out against Napster, but, he’s to busy trying to impress all the little boys and girls that he’ll say whatever it takes to do it..Napster is another example of that. But, once again, Fred Durst is another rant for another day.

Before I go any further, let me say that I have Napster on my computer. My library only has two songs in it..neither of which are Metallica songs. I use Napster to find rare songs or live songs or songs you just aren’t able to find anywhere else (Body Counts ‘Cop Killer’ comes to mind...) So, I don’t hate Napster, but, I do recognize the fact that what they do is illegal. One more thing I'd like to say before I close this rant out is this: I’ve heard a few people say that what Metallica has done is a slap in the face to their fans. I say BULLSHIT!! Look, the way I look at it is this, if you ever were a Metallica fan, a TRUE Metallica fan, then you would support the band in whatever they do.

Whether it’s cut they’re hair, tour with KoRn, or take legal courses with Napster, then you support it. If you claimed to be a Metallica fan and you turned on them after ANY of these instances, then you never were a fan. You were like all the other sheep that heard “Enter Sandman” 7 billion times and went out and transformed into a Metallica fan. You don’t really give a fuck about the band and you never did. So, for those who fall into that category let me just say: Fuck You and Shut the fuck up.. Your opinion is neither needed nor is it wanted. Leave the debates about Metallica to people like myself, a dedicated to the bone Metallica fan. You can go listen to Limp Bizkit or whatever else is hot, just leave this argument to the rest of us with a clue!

Of course, I could be wrong....

never mine that
anyone remember the subject matter "of justice for all..." seems like mettallica have turned into hypocrites... anyway..they are well within their rights to go against napster. but i think (and they seemed to think when they write justice)that justice in todays society serves legality and politics more so that is serves real justice..and the truth.. and as for Dr fever..his head is up metllicas ass.. nightx

NeverMind that
how ironic is that... a metallica fan(at the top of this list)posts a comment.supporting metallics napster argument.saying that he will "follow the master of puppets"...your strings have been pulled son.

Napster did NOT make copies of Metallica's songs and distribute them... they just supplied a way for people with the same interrests to exchange files... Napster could hypothetically be used to send any file... not just mp3s... and they're not responsible for what the people who use their software do with it.. if those people do something illegal like oh, i dunno release an mp3 of a song 3 whole weeks before the album comes out... well, that's not Napster's fault, it's the dipsh*t who decided he'd be all funny and release somebody's sh*t before anyone else got the chance to buy it... the music industry needs to use software like Napster, and make money off of it if they're so worried about the damn cash.. those fukkin scumbags... but instead, they're trying to get rid of it like something else better, faster, and harder to take down will come along... did any of you guys know that CD sales have actually went up after the advent of mp3s... but the record companies insist that they're losing money... that's bullsh*t.. they're not losing money.. they just don't understand what they're dealing with, just like the movie industry did with the VCR, and just like newspaper did with TV.. they're scared cuz they know nothing about what's going on... end of story.. -0

Matallica is alright and I do see their point. It is illeagal, but on the flip side we are going into a new age of information swaping. Do you really think that matallica or any court room can stop it? The answer is no $ucking way! Either jump on board and get used to it or shut the $uck up. If napster goes off line their will just be another server to pop into it's place, anywhere around the world. This is the way it is, so disagree or agree with Matallica is not really the point. The real point is what the @uck can anyone really do about it. I'm also in a Band and we accept napster for it's more positive uses, simply because you really can't stop this. We also support are fans to download our music as well. If someone figures out a way to protect the rights of recording artist great, but I really can't see how. So stop pissing on Metlica they are after all fighting an up hill battle. They may win against napster but still the problem will remain. They are in their right to do what they are doing. Don't worry my little MP3 fans. You will still be downloading free music for years to come but it might not be from napster.

metaldude
i suport METALLICA because is the best band in the world , abuot napster f*uck off

jason
how i understand it, is that napster is a medium for fans to share music. music they have allready bought. it would be like someone buying an album and playing it to there friends in there bedroom. but with napster, they can do this with a much larger number of people . and people have always recorded of friends albums and radio stations. it,s just that with napster, more people can get together and do the same thing. it also gives some fans insight on an album, so they know if they want it or not. if thats what,s worrying metallica, then there insecure. because i dont know how many albums i have bought in the past, just to find out that it sucked. and as far as sticking to a band no matter what, i dont by that. thats blind idol worshiping. i only back things if i think its right or good. in other word, i dont say a band is right or good just cause i like it. i like a band only if there right or good. to defend double standards in any thing, is a blinded, predudist pointless stand. it has nothing to do with right or wrong. it,s just you,r opinion. and you,r opinion is,nt squat if it cant be backed up with the truth or with what,s right.

suck my co ck lars ulrich
metallica is the worst band ever. cut your fu cking mullet.

MasterOfPuppetz
those last two posts just show how selfish some people are, pretty pathetic

here's my opinion, i like free music, i doon't like payin for it, so what metallica did really pissed me off. is it illegal?? oh heck yes, do i know this?? yes again, very emphatically, but i don't care, the only thing is that they are impedin my illegal ways of gettin free music, but i still do buy cd's, only b/c i don't have a burner, but i agree with you about all of this, and i dont' care about metallica, they just stopped me, but who cares, there's only like 2000 wannabes on the internet, so i will be gettin my mp3's free forever. peace

Evil Ramon
Sorry for spamming, last one, I promise. CD's are not worth 17$ and promptly I don't even care how much money they put in it. If you get a chance of paying for a hotdog or getting it for free, which one do you pick? I think the answer is obvious. I don't give a rat's @ss how much money or effort they put into it, they are not getting my money, I care about myself only, NOT about what's fair and unfair. Life is unfair. Then of course I would never download their always sh#tty music anyways. Thanks.

Evil Ramon
Sandman, you probably are just not smart enough to figure out how to download Napster. And if you didn't know there are dozen's of programs alternative to Napster and even your balding mainstream rock "stars" can't stop it. Lars:"They are manufacturing our art..." Your F#CKING ART? Who the F*CK are you? Pablo F#CKING PICASSO? The point is Copyright is gone, I'll never buy CDs again and there ain't no one who's gonna stop me.

Evil Ramon
If you're antimusic and all that sh#t should've known better then listening to Metallica which is in the same league as Blink 182. The point is the whole Metallica and you too can shampoo my crotch, and Lars can shove all his golden tennis rockuets up his arse. Give them your money, you'll make grandpa Lars proud! It's goats like you that give money to f#gs like Metallica. Good luck.

pureslab
napster should die - I hate young arrogant boys like that napster dude who think they are so cool and that they stand for so much by tying up our tax dollars with their silly business ventures

Dr Fever
dan sanches, you are the perfect example of a numbnut idiot. You "were" a metallica fan?? no, wrong...you were a jacka$$ who jumped on the bandwagon (probably with the black album)...then jumped on the next big metallica related bandwagon (napster)...so, what i'm saying is, you were NEVER a metallica fan, so don't even try to kid me or yourself because your just wasting your time.

dan sanches
Dr. Fever, ur a dumb punk. u are an uneducated little prick who is too mis-informed to make an honestly objective clear-cut opinion about any aspect of the metallica-napster suit. i was a metallica fan. i stopped being one when this whole fiasco started. just because you don't support every little think a band does doesn't in any way mean that you aren't a fan of that band, it just means that you are smart enough to make decisions for yourself instead of just treating a band like some kind of god who can do no wrong. if you are misguided enough to think that metallica is 100% correct in their lawsuit, then you are incredibly stupid and should not be writing a column for a good site like antimusic.com. one factor to think about before completely writing off my opinion, metallica got a fan base in the first place by having their true diehard real fans (not you) trade their music, and not, years later, they peg their fans and the operators of napster for doing the same thing. that is incredibly hypocritical and just that alone makes me, and anyone else with a system of values, heartily dislike metallica, and support napster.

encursed soul
I think its just a bunch of nonsence that metallica make such trouble about napster. when they win. then what will happen. some other of the dozens of programs found on the net will take over and whe can start all over again. lets see how long metallica can keep that up. all metallica is doing is pissing of their fans. im a proud user of napster and also a frequent buyer of cd,s. i found out that since napster i buy even more cd,s of bands i would never have been able to hear from. just like most of the napster users. of course you have those mindless so called music lovers. who download all there music from napster. but do you realy think they would buy cd,s anyway. there are enough ways to get the songs you want. all in all i think the music industry suffers no ill effect from napster. luckily there are bands that see that and support napster. they realise that its free advertising for them and a million other bands out there. im a mucician to. and im verry happy that with todays technology all these things are possible. thats all i have to say.

LogicBomb
Is it just me or is the entire notion of romanticism dead in Rock and music in general? I would think that when you hit that plateau that Metallica has reached you would start making music for the sake of making the music. How much money does a person really need? I confess to not liking Metallica, not because of this but for the same reason I dont like Korn or Limp Bizkit. Everyone has it towards some band, its a vibe that just turns you off. I could understand this argument coming from a lesser known band, or even a less-commercial band like the Tragically Hip or Treble Charger(both huge canadian bands). My point is that Napster is perfect for people like me who will go out and buy a cd because they like the one song, and how often does it turn out that that whole cd is woth youre buck? Not to often. I would think that Metallica would want to get theirmusic out there for no other reason then to satisfy their fans. Not just their hardcore fans but their fleeting fans. To me its the "Professional Sports Players syndrome", high priced entertainers who get everything they want and then bitch when they dont get their way.

JIMEE
I support Metallica and Napster. I noticed Metallica defending new people in the buisness. They don't really care about their music that much( Napster needed their permission and things would have been all right). I support Napster because it makes more people explore music. I am turining into a big azz Slayer fan now. And if you're an aspiring musician, you can learn from differnt sounds to expand your musical horizon. I can't say which I favour, Napster or Metallica. If I was a rockstar, I wouldn't want to be super rich, it leads to corperational corruption. I would allow Napster to have my music, but if it was ruining the music industry somehow then I would stop it, besides, there is always concerts and t-shirts and live video concerts to rely on. Now for the Metallica sound, I will always be a Metallica fan. I got interested in them when Reload came out, and I will be a fan for what they did in the past. They were one of the few good metal bands in the 80's. When they changed, they made different sounding songs. Is Reload a good cd? Yes. Is is a good Metallica cd? No! No! No! It's probably the worst! When you make a band, you make good music usually, but good music for your image is different (ex. Slayer's image is thrash and death relating songs, Metallica's was destruction, sorrow, and emotinal pain with some bone-crunching speed riffs) There is only one way you can say Metallica sucks or they sellout...it's on their new album. If that fails the metal test, then we can attack. I think reload was supposed to be an experiment, and they said it's over. "THE GOOD,THE BAD, AND THE LIVE" is one huge set with live song by us, but if you have the origional songs and just want the live recordings, then don't buy it, tape it off a friend." -Lars Ulrich talking about the live tracks to "THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE LIVE" - August 1988-Metallica in their own words

Sandman_98
DAMN RIGHT, DR. FEVER!!!! Metallica KICKS ASS, always had, always will. Napster tries to ruin the music world, metallica says, "gee, who can stop them? it has to be a band that rules the Metal/Rock scene, so why not US!" Metallica is the only band big enough (and good enough) to stop Napster, and all you anti-metallica pussies know it! Metallica is right in sueing napster. end of story. by the way, Fred Durst sux major ass. just wanted to tell all you "nookie" pussies that.

viserath
i think that metallica has all the right to be doing this.they work hard for thier music and they put forth a lot of effort to please thier fans. But when it comes to this everything is different. They are spending millions of dollars making this music and its all going to waste .Why?you say, cause of a bunch of lazy broke bitches that cant go to the record store like the rest of us.I think that metallica is doing the right thing. viserath
