When one of our readers once wrote that
rap was an acronym for “retards attempting poetry” he must have been thinking
about Missy Elliot. She is a living reason why some people write off the
entire genre. Which is sad because there are talented rappers out there;
we just don’t see many on MTV. Missy Elliot is among the worst of the bunch.
Her childish raps, mixed with simplistic metaphors and haphazard and mostly
illiterate rhymes are the embodiment of shallow stardom based on hype over
substance.
This latest assault upon good taste is
titled “This is Not A Test”; which is good because if it was a test, Missy
would fail miserably. The only thing that Missy has going for her is Timbaland,
the genius behind paper rap queen. What is more laughable is people try
to pass off her obvious lack of depth or even literacy as creativity and
this CD is another example. This time around she calls upon a plethora
of musical guests to try and help give her some musical depth. It doesn’t
help, and what we end up with is the same ol’ Missy.
Exhibit A: The first so called verse
and chorus to “Pass That Dutch”
Listen up everyone! we have been just
informed That there's an unknown virus that's
attacking all clubs Symptoms have been said to be - heaving
breathing Wild dancing, coughing So when you hear the sound - WHO-DI-WHOOOO! Run for cover motherfucker! WOOOOOO! Ahh daddy! Ooooo! Ah! oh,

(ooh) Pass that dutch (ah), pass that dutch
(ah) Pass that dutch (ah), pass that dutch

The only rhymes seem to be of the same
word. People give Missy credit for her “beats” but that’s like giving Gibson
credit for the solos on a Led Zeppelin album. Again the sneaking suspicion
is the parts that people think are so “innovative” come from Timbaland
and not Missy, who can’t even find a word to rhyme with “jeans”.

The key lines here are “Got speak what
yo weak mind lacks”; pot calling the kettle black? “Ya heard that? I'm
creative to the fullest”, really? What’s creative about this? Was
it this next line? "Whachu talking bout Willis?", seems she stole that
one from Gary Coleman. Hardly creative, but hip-hop artist have a long
history of ripping off other people.
But the ultimate degradation comes when
Missy sings or rather raps out her love song to vibrators in “Toyz”.
Just soak in this intellectually stimulating and “creative” verse:
Whatchu mean I don't need you no more? Cause I don't! I gotta bag full of toys and I don't
need none of your boys So you can hit every chick on the block Cause I'm gone be alright once I turn
this power on, ya dig?
I realize that some people buy into this
hack and actually enjoy her so called music. That’s fine and all but please
if I ever hear another person call her a musical genius, I’m going become
violently ill. If this is what passes for “genius” these days than popular
music is in a much sadder state than we could have ever imagined. To add
insult to injury Rolling Stone even had the gull to compare Missy to the
Beatles. Missy is a lot of things but she is not even in the same league
with the Beatles, hell they are major league and she’s stick ball. But
alas, people must keep propagating this misguided notion that Missy is
so gifted. It’s baffling but perhaps it’s like avant-garde art? It’s so
bad that people convince themselves that it’s genius? Or they talk about
how brilliant it is but inside they see it for the crap that it is.
Sorry to burst your bubble but there is nothing ingenious or groundbreaking
here. I suspect Timbaland could reach the same results if he went into
a studio for a day with a group of kindergarten kids. Then again, they
could probably find two words that rhyme.
You can delude yourself all you like but
I still say Missy is a hack and this CD just justifies that theory once
more. Save your money, or better yet go buy the new Outkast. That
will be a much wiser investment than helping to perpetrate this fraud,
which isn’t a misdemeanor, Missy sucks ass like a class A felony.

Missy really is the worst rapper ever. I truely appreciate rap and all kinds of music, but ever time I hear her music I am disgusted. I searched for a website just so I could vent about how much it ruins my day when I hear missy elliot attempt to rap. I think that even if she lost weight she would still be a horrible performer. The sad truth is, you just don't understand her deep lyrics. It's like what people say about Radiohead, you have to listen to it a few times before you get it. However, unlike Radiohead, she does have a inner depth to her lyrics, isn't depressing and is highly entertaining.
She worked her self up from nothing, could you try that. Didn't think so, come back when you're as big as her commercially.

I do feel that if you are going to criticize an artist for being ‘illiterate’, and for using ‘simplistic metaphors’, etc. that you should at least be able to write well yourself. There are several errors in your review, which just makes you look silly in condemning someone else.
To begin with, you are misusing the word ‘illiterate’. Please look it up. You are complaining about ‘simplistic metaphors’ just before delivering the most overused metaphor regarding this album (‘if this were a test she’d fail miserably’). The word haphazard is an adjective, which you use directly before a conjunction followed by an adverb. This is a no-no because it makes the adjective read like a noun, which doesn’t make sense. You complain about Elliot not being able to find another word to rhyme with ‘jeans’ presumably because her vocabulary is not sufficient. However, you use the word ‘depth’ twice in consecutive sentences. The sentence that begins ‘Again the sneaking suspicion is. . .’ should have a comma after ‘again’ and presents a dangling participle. You use the word ‘gull’ to refer to Rolling Stone magazine’s audacity in praising Elliot. A gull is a bird. The word you’re looking for is gall. You used the word ‘than’ in place of the correct word ‘then’ in the sentence ‘If this is what passes for “genius” these days than popular music . . .’. These errors are just some examples.
You have a right to your opinion and I think some of what you’re saying is valid. You just don’t have adequate command of the language to be as critical and smug as you are.

RAP: rhythmic american poetry. Any student of poetry should know that it doesn't HAVE to rhyme. Okay, really, Toyz was a bit much. I actually heard what it was about before I ever bought the album and made up my mind that I would just not listen to that track. (See how easy it is to avoid something you find objectionable?) Yes, I am a fan of Missy Elliott, not necessarily because of her proficient rhyming skills (although if you listen to her, you'll hear more than you bargained for). Missy is talented because she says what she feels she needs to say in a way that no one else has said it (quotes from TV or whatever notwithstanding), and she is not concerned with paltry posts or simple ideas about her and/or her talent. Her beats are 'on point' and her many of her rhymes are relevant (if you bothered to listen to an entire song), and her personality is energetic and open. But that's beside the point. Your post/review seemed to say more that you didn't understand what she was saying than that you didn't like what she said. Some rap fans don't understand metal. Some metal fans don't understand pop. Not having an understanding of something is a personal issue; it doesn't mean that the thing you don't understand is necessarily bad or wrong. Maybe you should wait until you do understand before you bother to critique.

Finally i got a response. Actually i added this site to my favorites just to check. I could write several pages why i like the album. But the best argument should be you giving this album a vomiting smiley. You could have given a half smiley or maybe 2. That would have been a slap in the face...

Sure Dan, see Fred Durst, Avril and Kelly Hoggsbourne. Maybe Missy standsout because we don't follow the convention and praise her, while those others are pretty universally trashed. Like I said, if you like her fine but I just don't see where people get off with some of the praise they give her. There are so many more legit hip-hop artists out there that are worthy of praise but not this hack.

It's not scenster, it's an observation based on the merits of the comparing the body of work from both. It's like The Clash being in the NFL and Blink-182 being in a pee wee league. What is "scenester" is praising this hack because it's the "cool" thing to do.

Ah, one cannot help but revel in the delicious punchline of Missy ACTUALLY naming one of her transparent monstrosities "Spelling Bee". I tried to listen to some of it, but it was as if someone was chewing glass in my ear. After about six minutes, and -55 IQ points later, I advised my cousin to bury said cd in the ground, and to promptly drown herself. Horrible.

How can you review a CD without listening to it? I'm the first to admit when I was wrong. I actually liked the last Korn CD and said so. Not the greatest but better than a lot of stuff. Haven't heard the new one yet. If Missy put something out that justified the praise she gets then I'd eat crow, that's fine but this is another shallow CD from a shallow hack.
