Bobby Brown was arrested and charged with battery for allegedly hitting his wife Whitney Houston during a domestic dispute on Sunday night. 

Brown turned himself into authorities on Wednesday, was charged and then released. 

The charges stem from a 911 call Houston made on Sunday night. According to Fulton County Police spokesman Kurtis Young, Houston suffered a cut upper lip and bruised cheek. 

Houston told police that Brown hit the left side of her face with an open right hand. She made the 911 call after Brown had left the residence to catch a flight to Los Angeles. 

Brown’s attorney says that the couple hoped to work out the matter privately but it looks like authorities have a different idea. 

Brown is currently on probation in neighboring DeKalb County for a DUI and DeKalb County authorities are now trying to determine if this incident violates the terms of his probation. 

Brown is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing January 7th. If convicted of the battery charge, Brown could be sentenced up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.  If Brown is found to have violated his probation he could be sent to jail.
