New Orleans Police said the 59-year-old singer and an unidentified woman were walking together on Burgundy Street in the citys French Quarter around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday when two muggers grabbed the womans purse. Davies gave chase and one of the muggers shot him in the right thigh.
Davies was treated for the gunshot wound at a local hospital and released.
One of the muggers, Jerome Barra, 25, was apprehended by police and has been charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. The second suspect is still at large.
New Orleans Police Chief Eddie Compass expressed regret for the incident but he added that Davies "showed poor judgment" by running after the muggers.
Davies is best known as the frontman for the Kinks one of the groups of the British Invasion. The band gained international recognition in 1964 when they scored a hit with the single "You Really Got Me" from their debut album. The band also scored big hits with singles "All Day and All of the Night", Come Dancing and "Lola".
Davies splits his time between The Kinks and his solo work.
