The trek will include concerts in many cities the band was unable to play during last year's reunion tour, certainly the hottest reunion in ages. On a handful of the tour stops, Pixies will do "double-headers" - an early and a late show (see below for specifics). In addition, the band has on its itinerary select music festival appearances, including the Sasquatch Festival in George, Washington, Atlanta's Music Midtown, and the CMJ Rock Hall Music Fest in Cleveland.
When SPIN bestowed its title on Pixies, the magazine vaulted the band past same-year reunions by the Cure, Duran Duran, Loretta Lynn and the Beastie Boys. SPIN's acknowledgement was focused on Pixies' live performances that were, as The Times in London put it in a 5-star review, "musically spellbinding."
Pixies kicked off their reunion tour a year ago, the first show being on April 13 in Minneapolis, MN, and over the ensuing eight months, shattered sales records around the world. The tour ended in December in New York City with 24,000 tickets sold for an unprecedented eight-night, sold-out run. During the reunion, Pixies recorded and made available their first brand-new song in thirteen years, "Bam Thwok," written by Kim Deal and sold exclusively through iTunes.
Pixies formed in Boston in 1986 and disbanded in 1992 after recording five albums and have since been acclaimed as one of the biggest influences on the alternative rock scene of the time. U2's Bono referred to the Pixies as "one of America's greatest bands ever," and David Bowie called their work "just about the most compelling music of the entire '80s."
